Call It What You Want
~Call It What You Want by Taylor Swift~
Author's Note: Requested! I um well here's this um yeah
Summary: Luke's fans find out his girlfriend is a content creator and flood her comments with hate. Luke finds a way to comfort her.
Warnings: some mean language, implied smut like barely
Word Count: 3,440
Tumblr media
It was an accident. She was planning on keeping her relationship as secret as possible. Her social media following was incredibly nosy. They would always over analyze every detail of her posts. Especially, her TikToks and her YouTube videos.
She vlogged her life, sometimes it would be barely anything and other times it would be every detail of her life.
When she started dating her boyfriend, she promised that it would not be something she would make content out of. Especially since her boyfriend was Luke Hughes. They started dating after being friends for nearly a year.
 Keeping their relationship private was easy since their lives didn’t necessarily change much. Since they were friends before they got together. He was never featured in any of her content since people would instantly make assumptions. Keeping it private became extra easy after he moved to New Jersey for the NHL. Although, it became suspicious after she stopped mentioning her boyfriend.
She had spent several hours editing her most recent YouTube video where she was talking about how she was taking a break since she would be on vacation. Vacation was actually moving to New Jersey to live with Luke. She graduated early, since she spent three years of her life completely focusing on school, her videos, and Luke.
Since her eyes were so exhausted she didn’t notice that Luke was walking in the background completely shirtless.
He was barely in the video, hardly noticeable. But both of their fans were incredible detectives and found it out within the first ten minutes of the video being posted.
“Lukey,” she called out towards him from her bedroom. She was sitting at her desk, starting towards her desk top. She continued to scroll through the five second clip that Luke was barely in.
“Yeah?” he called back as he walked into their newly shared bedroom. He walked towards her as he rested his hand onto the desk as he delicately pressed his lips to the side of her cheek.
“Remember how we were going to keep this secret for as long as possible?” she explained. He hummed as he brushed her hair off of her neck as he tilted her head to the side to kiss her lips delicately. For a moment, she leaned back to deepen the kiss. “Lukey,” she mumbled against his lips. He hummed again as he slowly leaned back. “They found out,” she let out as her eyes widened slightly.
“They—what?” he asked as he shifted his gaze towards her desktop.
“Look,” she let out as she reversed the video slightly. She played the five second sequence and he stared blankly towards the screen.
“What am I supposed to be looking at?” he asked as he stared towards the screen, “Besides my beauti—”
“Not the time, baby,” she mumbled as she raised her hand up, gliding it across his cheek. He chuckled as he leaned closer. “Look, here,” she mumbled as she pointed towards the top left of the screen. Where he walked through the hallway, his gaze was on his phone as he was on the screen for a few seconds.
“That’s it?” he let out a soft chuckle leaving his lips, “Come on, I look like every guy ever. There’s no way people know that’s me,” he explained as he watched her scroll down and show the top comment on her video.
Nohughesyno: I know Luke Hughes when I see him!! 3:56!
“Okay that’s one comment—” she interrupted him by scrolling through the rest of the comments. Every single one was mentioning that Luke was in the video. “Okay, that’s fine, we’re fine,” he mumbled as he took a hold of her chair, spinning it so that her body was facing him.
“This could be bad,” she muttered as she looked into his eyes, pouting slightly. He rested his hands onto the desk as he leaned towards her, deliactely taking her lips with his. She hummed against his lips as her hands glided along his neck and into his hair.
“It will be fine, I promise,” he mumbled against her lips, “Now you don’t have to care too much,” he said as he pulled back. He watched as she slowly opened her eyes.
“You’re right,’ she mumbled.
“I’m always right,” he let out teasingly. She pushed him back, chuckling. He smirked as he leaned towards her kissing her urgently.
~~~
She thought Luke was right, convinced herself that everything would be fine. Except, the comments started off sweet. Many of them were happy to find out that they were together. She noticed that comments and views on old videos were sky rocketing as they were trying to find anything that they have missed. It was cute for a few days.
She thought what’s the harm in actually posting a video with purpose of showing Luke off. By showing him off, it was a two second clip of them posing in her floor length mirror.
She was wearing a red sweater with black leather pants. He was wearing one of his all black suits. He was standing beside her, awkwardly holding up two thumbs up as they posed for the small clip.
It was almost instant that the comments were flooded with awful comments. Many of them were calling her a gold digger, calling her ugly, calling her all of the awful inults you could think of. Simply because she was dating Luke.
It wasn’t just his followers that were saying awful things, it was her own. They kept saying that she was shallow for being with a professional athlete. Despite the fact that her and Luke met during their college orientation. She didn’t know that he was even drafted into the NHL since she never paid attention to hockey.
She was sitting on the aisle of the WAG section, unengaged in any conversation. The first period flew by as the score was still 0-0. Her gaze was on her Instagram comments. There was such a flood of mean comments that at this point all she wanted was to find something that was kind. But there was nothing, no matter how much she scrolled.
Being content creator for majority of her teenage years, she was used to ignoring the comments. Not letting any of the awful words get to her. But something about the words saying that she wasn’t good enough for Luke really stabbed her in her chest. He was everything to her, all she wanted was for his fans to see that.
Luke wasn’t active on social media much during the season so he was utterly clueless. Y/N was good at pretending, convinced that Luke had no idea how she was feeling.
The boys were skating back on the ice to start the second when Reanne delicately tapped Y/N’s shoulder. She forced her gaze up to meet Reanne’s gaze. “You’re too quiet, what’s going on?”
Y/N’s eyes widened while she took a deep breath. “Been a long day,” she mumbled as she watched Luke skate in a wide circle on the ice. A soft smile formed to her lips, knowing that he was there.
“Saw that you posted Luke on your TikTok. Huge step right?” she expressed. Y/N hummed as she watched the teams line up for the face off. She watched Luke instantly get in the play, pushing any conversation aside. Reanne’s lips fell into a pout but left her alone.
The rest of the game ended in a tight overtime win with a goal by Jack. It was usually how the games have been going for the last few games.
She waited outside of the locker room, her gaze on her TikTok comments. Every word stabbing her in the chest. There was only so much she could take. Especially about how Luke deserves better. She knew that the fans have no idea who either of them truly were but for them to still say that. It sucked.
She leaned against the wall, blinking away any tears that were fighting to form in her eyes.
Hughesy542: I can’t believe Luke would be with someone who clearly has no personality. She’s probably only with him for his money
The comment continued to cycle through her mind. Her TikTok platform was completely different that how she handled her YouTube videos. Her TikToks, sure she seemed shallow there. Most of the content, the only content that would get views, would be her get ready with me videos. Sure, it probably seemed like that all she cared about is how she looked but she was more than that.
She knew that. Luke knew that. He wouldn’t be with her if that was the case. She was gorgeous but there was so much more to her than that. She hated being called shallow.
“Y/N?” she heard Luke say, she lifted her gaze to see him directly in front of her. She jumped and slammed her hand against her chest.
“Jesus, Luke! You scared the hell out of me,” she said while chuckling. The corner of his lips curled upwards as he looked over her features.
“I said your name like four times, beautiful. You alright?” he asked as he reached towards her. She stepped back, dropping her gaze towards the concrete below her.
“Ready to head home?” she asked softly as she glanced towards him before she started walking away from him.
Luke pursed his lips forward as he took in a long deep breath. She didn’t give him a chance to reply as she began walking towards the car. He nodded as he pressed his lips together as he followed after her. He was practically jogging towards her.
She glanced behind her to see Luke reaching towards her. He took a delicate hold of her waist; forcing her to stop. She lifted her head up meeting his gaze. He scanned her features, taking note in the tears brimming her eyes. Reaching towards her, he pulled her into a tight embrace.
At first she was hesitant has she kept her arms to her side. Slowly, she wrapped her arms around his center back. Luke took a hold of the back of her head, holding her tightly to his chest. Her entire body relaxed in his arms. A sob rised in her throat but she tried to keep it inside.
“What’s going on?” he asked softly.
Reluctantly, she pulled away from him, looking into his gaze. “I’m just tired,” she mumbled. He nodded while looking deeply into her eyes.
“Okay,” he let out softly as she slipped away from his grasp. He held out his hand towards her and she happily took a hold of his hand. Luke watched her lead him towards his car that was parked in the back of the parking garage.
The drive home was quiet. It was usually quiet after losses but Luke and Y/N were always in great moods after a win. But she was so silent, that he knew something was wrong. They were only a few minutes away from their shared apartment.
“Baby,” Luke mumbled as they sat at a red light. She kept her gaze towards her lap, her phone was in her bag. She couldn’t stare at the comments anymore. The words were all jumbled in her head. Every word was intersecting with one another and making it worse. “Can you look at me?” he let out softly.
She clenched her jaw as she slowly lifted her head to look towards him. He scanned her features watching her avoid his eye. “Talk to me,” he let out. Slowly, she pulled her lips between her teeth as she tilted her head back. Luke looked back towards the street in front of him as he drove ahead.
“I–I can’t,” she choked out while she dropped her gaze back down towards her lap. “Not now,” she muttered. Luke’s eyes widened as he shifted his gaze back towards her momentarily as he turned into the parking garage.
“Okay, what can I do?” he asked softly, he took a sudden breath as he slowed down into the parking garage. She shook her head as she continued to avoid his eyes. “Baby,”
“Luke please,” she mumbled as a sob climbed into her throat.
“Okay,” he let out barely above a whisper. He glanced towards her again as he pulled into his parking spot. “Can you tell me when we get upstairs?” he asked softly. She shrugged her shoulders as she unbuckled her seatbelt. Luke reached towards her, resting his hand onto her thigh.
“I will,” she muttered as she met his gaze.
“Okay, my love,” he let out as he dragged his thumb across the fabric for a few seconds. She took a deep breath before she opened the door and climbed out of the car. Luke quickly followed in pursuit.
She was already walking towards the entrance to the apartment from the parking garage. Luke practically jogged towards her to catch up to her speed. Luke reached towards her, taking a hold of her arm for her to slow down. She glanced towards him as she slowed down, letting him take a hold of her hand.
She began to climb up the stairs guiding Luke towards their third floor apartment. His thumb glided along her skin absentmindedly. Despite the stairs being inside, it was incredibly cold and he could feel it against the skin of the top of her hand.
Luke pulled his phone from his pocket and immediately pulled up DoorDash. He decided that she needed her favorite late night dinner. They ordered from the italian restaurant so many times, their order was saved in the app. By the time he ordered it, they were already outside of their apartment door.
She pulled her hand from his as she unlocked the door and immediately stepped inside. “I’m gonna go shower,” she muttered.
“Hey,” Luke mumbled as he took a hold of her waist, spinning her to face him. “I’ve been very patient,” he muttered teasingly. Her eyes widened slightly as she felt a small smile form on her lips. Luke took a hold of her chin as he slowly leaned towards her. He kissed her delicately for a few seconds.
“Better?” she asked softly.
“Better,” he mumbled as he pecked her lips once more. “Do you want me to join you?” he asked sweetly. Her lips fell into a soft pout as he glided his thumb across her bottom lip. “It’s okay baby girl,” he muttered as he leaned towards her and delicately pressed his lips to her forehead.
“I’m sorry,” she let out softly.
“Don’t be, my love, I’ll be waiting,” he mumbled as she slowly slipped away from his grasp. He took a deep breath as he watched her hang her head low as she rounded the corner towards the bathroom. He kicked his shoes off and started walking deeper into the apartment.
Subconsciously, he pulled his phone back out and pulled out TikTok.
Of course, usually how it went, one of Y/N’s vidoes popped up. It was one of the ones she had posted early today. He watched the twenty-second: spend the morning with me video. Smiling to himself, he watched as the clip of the both of them appeared. In his opinion, he looked awkward.
He sat down on the couch, clicking the comments; out of curiosity. The first comment he read was saying that Y/N was ugly. His mouth practically fell open, offended that anyone could look at her and have that thought cross his mind. She was absolutely stunning.
He shook his head as he continued to read each comment on her post. Every time he read a comment talking about her lack of personality, his mind would instantly think about every moment she made him laugh. How cute she would be every time she would dance while cleaning because she couldn’t sit still.
His heart starting beating rapidly the longer his name was brought up. Every comment with his name in it was saying how he deserved better. He never understood that. If anything, she deserved better than him. She was out of this world stunning and he felt like she deserved better.
He clenched his jaw the more and felt anger send a rush of heat over his body. How can anyone not like the love of his life? How can anyone not look at her and think anything other than how beautiful she is; think about how kind she is; think about how funny and smart she is?
He took a deep breath and tossed his phone beside him on the couch. Tilting his head back against the couch, he squinted his eyes shut. He shook his head side to side as he contemplated what to do. Luke knew that’s what was bothering her. Usually, she was so good at letting it roll off of her back. But it seemed like it was everywhere and all he wanted to do was make it stop for her. All he’s wanted was for her to be happy, he hated seeing how this was affecting her.
He was so consumed with his thoughts that he did not realize how much time had passed. There was a knock on his door and his eyes shot open. He stood up from the couch and took fast steps towards his door.
He took a hold of the door handle and pulled it open to see the person delivering his food. He smiled widely, “Thank you so much,” he expressed as he took the cardboard bag from the DoorDasher. The person quickly darted down the hallway as Luke shut the door, twisting the locks in the process.
Y/N stepped back into the living room, her hair was dripping went as her body was covered by a tank top and a pair of sweatpants. Her lips curled upward into a wide grin, “Is that what I think it is?” she asked as she hopped slightly towards the countertop. He chuckled softly as he nodded dramatically as he instantly started pulling out their dramatically large pasta dishes.
She instantly wrapped her arms around him from his side. He wrapped his arms around her as he turned to hold her to his chest. “You’re the best, you know that?” she mumbled against his chest. He glided his hand up and down her back.
“I love you baby,” he whispered as he delicately pressed his lips to the top of her head. Before she pulled away from him to meet his gaze. His hand slipped beneath her tanktop as he glided his hand across her skin. “I’m sorry about what’s happening on social media,” he mumbled.
Her eyes widened as she tilted her head to the side. “It’s okay, Lu–”
“It’s not,” he let out as he looked over her teary features. “Everything they’re saying isn’t true, you know that right?” he asked softly as he glided his hands over her frame.
“I know, it’s just a lot,” she mumbled.
“And you realize–like–you are so out of my league. I don’t care what my “fans” say,” he mumbled as he slowly guided her backwards.
She chuckled as she rolled her eyes playfully, “Oh my god,” she let out. He smirked as he reached down and took a hold of her thighs. She jumped up and wrapped her legs around his waist. Her hands ran through his hair, tugging at the curls slightly.
“Not only are you incredibly hot–”
“Luke–”
“Let me finish,” he said with a grin on his face. Slowly, he pushed open the door to their bedroom. “You’re literally fucking hilarious and adorable and sexy–”
“Luke, what are you doing?” she asked softly as he slowly placed her down onto their bed. He stepped back and took a hold of his red Devils jersey and tossed it to the floor. Her eyes widened slightly as she scanned his frame. His body was covered in redden marks from hits he took during the game.
“I’m reminding of who you are,” he began as he climbed on top of her, “You are my favorite person on the planet,” he whispered as he looked deeply into her eyes. She rolled her eyes playfully as she ran her hands from his hair down his neck. “I hate to see you hurting,”
“I’ll get over it eventually,”
“Can I speed up the process?” he asked, a smirk toying to his lips. Her eyes widened slightly while she nodded. Slowly, he began to press delicate wet kisses down her frame.
“I think it’s working already,” she mumbled as she arched her back slightly.
“Perfect,”
Secret(s) — K. SATO
Prompt: Kenji finally decides to come clean with his feelings and (sort of) confesses to you...except, it doesn't go the way he planned.
Tumblr media
Word Count: 2.9k+ words [Damn, I lowkey popped off on this one...] Pairing: Kenji Sato [Ultra-Man: Rising] x Fem! Reader Genre/s: A tiny bit of angst with fluff. Misunderstandings. Mutual pining. Warnings: Swearing. Maybe OOC Kenji (?), not sure tbh...also, I sort of change perspectives weirdly in this one but I tried to make it work the best I can ;-; Plus, I feel like the pacing's weird ;-;
KENJI SATO HAD TWO BIG SECRETS. Number one; he was none other than the Ultra-Man, begrudgingly taking over the momentous mantle after his father was injured. Unlike his booming baseball career, the whole 'superhero' thing was honestly a humbling experience, as Kenji realised the numerous beatings and immediate danger that comes with the spotlight. Though, after what was the unique experience of baby-sitting a kaiju and finally mending his relationship with his father, did Kenji come to terms with and welcome this responsibility. Gladly, Kenji finally found that much needed balance in his life that was necessary and soon, his life didn't seem as bad as it was before. It wasn't lonely anymore either, he thinks.
And number two; he has a massive crush on you. The both of you knew each other since you were little kids, growing up and going to school together like true best-friends did. Initially glued to the hip, you were then forced apart when he had to abruptly move to America with his mother. The transition was difficult to say the least, as little Kenji was thrown into what seemed like a whole new world. Other kids would talk constantly about the way he looked and acted behind his back—about how different he was, and whilst Kenji eventually grew out of it, he couldn't help but miss home. You, included.
When Kenji returned to Japan after many, many years, his feelings for you resurfaced when you surprised him during one of his baseball games. Amongst the crowd, you had been sitting by the front row when Kenji suddenly locked eyes with you as he entered the batting field. He had to do a double-take because God, the years treated you so damn well (And you were even wearing his jersey. His jersey). Whilst he wanted nothing more than to run to and scoop you into his arms, Kenji had a game to play. He had a strong urge to show you his best performance and damn it, did he deliver. He was the Ken Sato, after all. He never disappoints.
The both of you had your heartfelt reunion after the game as he held and spun you in his embrace, in all his sweaty glory (it was honestly a bit gross, but you let it slide this once for the sake of celebration). Excited, you both decided to catch up at Tonkotsu Tonki after he washed up. And to his relief, it was like you never changed. You were still the amazing, humble and kind you — and even though he thought you of beautiful then, you were practically glowing now.
Despite the piling stress he was enduring then — with having to juggle between being Ultra-Man, baby-sitting Emi and some career troubles — your presence alone was like a breath of fresh air. Whenever he was with you, whether it be on the phone or in person, he wasn't the famous celebrity, Ken Sato, or the beloved Japanese super-hero, Ultra-Man. He was just Kenji. And he wouldn't have it any other way.
So with that all being said, with months-full of excruciating pining, Kenji finally made the big decision to confess to you. Today. He invited you out to Tonkotsu Tonki for dinner one spontaneous night, booking a private space away from watchful eyes and any possible distractions.
"So, [Y/n]...I have something to tell you," he suddenly brings up after you finished your meals. His hands start to feel clammy as you avert your attention from your phone, staring up at him with curious eyes. Kenji was normally confident with most things, but vulnerability wasn't exactly his strong suit. He was usually flirtatious and a tease in nature, always flashing a dashing smile and blowing kisses towards the camera and his fans. But today was different. Heck, he couldn't even look at you right now without his head turning into complete mush.
On the other hand, the tone of his voice surprises you. It was noticeably a stark contrast to the light-hearted conversation you had just minutes prior. It must've been important, you think to yourself. And it made you nervous. "Oh," you lamely say, blinking at him, "uh, sure. Shoot." You clasp your hands together to keep them from fiddling too much, your nerves tingling at your fingertips. The thing is, you had an inkling of an idea as to what he was going to say, which was something you've been itching to hear for the past month. '...Was he actually going to follow through?' You think in quiet anticipation.
"Right. So, um..." Kenji throws some gestures in the air in attempt to gauge the right words, "...well, there's something I've been wanting to tell you for a while. It might be a bit...surprising–heavy, even. And I'm worried that it might change a lot of things between us–which I really hoped it wouldn't, but I guess it's inevitable."
He keeps an attentive gaze on you, studying how your features slowly became more tense. Funnily and strangely enough, he thought you looked a bit constipated and perhaps in another circumstance, he would've laughed at you. Though, he knew he wasn't doing any better himself – the restaurant suddenly felt like a sauna and his heart was practically pounding out of his chest as if he were in a game.
Kenji unknowingly continues to babble on. "I-I wanted to tell you sooner, but I didn't want to scare you off. But now, since I've come back from America–and am planning on staying here for good– and-and we've been given a chance to reconnect these past couple months...I think it's a good time to finally come clean and tell you the truth—"
"I already know," you suddenly intervene, surprising Kenji and even yourself. You mentally reprimand yourself for abruptly inserting yourself in the midst of his dialogue, cursing your lack of patience.
"You...you already know?" He asks sheepishly, clearly taken aback, "what–what do you mean you already know? Like, was I being too obvious or something?" He couldn't help the nervous chuckle that escapes his lips. He felt like he was going to implode at any minute as the embarrassment rapidly crept up his neck, dusting his cheeks.
You wince a little. "W-Well, no. But I guess I already had my suspicions. I noticed that you've been acting kinda weird recently and I sort of just...y'know, connected the dots," you shrugged, looking apologetic. He honestly didn't know how to feel about that.
"Oh...right. I forget how perceptive you can be sometimes. It's kinda scary," he attempts to flash you a smirk but it comes off as an awkward smile instead, as he raises a hand to rub his nape. You notice this and try to offer some consolation, reaching out to grab his hand. The action alone causes butterflies to flutter erratically in Kenji's stomach and for a moment, he feels hopeful.
"Hey, for what it's worth I'm actually glad that you told me, Ken. It must've been hard keeping it to yourself," you say warmly. Kenji scoffs in response – that was an understatement. "Oh, God. You have no idea how long I've been waiting to get this off of my chest," he huffs incredulously, unconsciously melting into your touch.
There was a brief second of pause and soon, Kenji couldn't help but feel as though there was something...off about this whole exchange, especially with how casual you were being at the moment. After all, Kenji literally just confessed (well, kind of) and you just sat there, smiling at him without giving him a definitive answer. Was...he forgetting something? Was he even doing this right?
"Y'know, you seem a bit...nonchalant about all this," he points out, "because if I'm being completely honest with you, I feel like I'm about to pass out." Brows furrowed, you straighten up in your seat. "Wait, Ken, I didn't mean to make it seem like I don't care or anything," you attempt to affirm with the wave of your hands, "i-it's just...slowly sinking in right now. Even though I told you I knew, hearing it from you straight is still overwhelming."
Overwhelming? At that, Kenji frowns. "Well...I did warn you, didn't I?" He says disheartened, letting out a deep sigh whilst running a hand through his hair. "Look, [Y/n]. I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable, nor do I want to pressure you for an answer right now. I just thought I'd tell you–"
"Woah, woah. Wait a minute. Pressure me?" You question with raised brows, now acutely confused, "pressure me into what?" Kenji rapidly blinks and tilts his head to one side, almost gaping at you, "Uhm, pressure you into reciprocating my feelings?" Crickets. Literal crickets. It was only after a few passing seconds that the both of you realise that you were talking about very, very different things.
"Y-You have feelings for me?" You gawk as you point to yourself, a bright blush now evident across your cheeks. Kenji wanted nothing more than to disappear into thin air. "I–Yes! Yes, I do–I thought I made that super clear?!" He panics, balling his fists, "what the hell were you talking about then?!"
Ah, shit. This was awkward, but there's no point in turning back now, you think to yourself, grimacing. You look around the both of you in caution and thankfully, the cook behind the counter was nowhere in sight, presumably having gone back of the kitchen. You leaned close towards Kenji. "I was talking about you being Ultra-Man!" You harshly whispered between your cupped hands, and it causes Kenji to bang his knee against the countertop, eliciting a loud thud.
You gasp. "Shit, Ken, are you okay—" "Fuck-What the actual fuck?!" He whisper-shouts, his eyes growing as wide as saucers as he aggressively rubs his knee. "how-how did you know about that?!" Maybe Kenji should've initially tried to deny the accusation, but his better judgement was severely trampled on, alongside his ego, by his failed attempt of a confession.
Now it was your turn to fumble. "W-Well, first of all, every time you would abruptly leave when we hang out, Ultra-Man would just appear out of nowhere and it would always be when there's a kaiju in the city! Like, come on, the timing was always coincidentally impeccable!" You explain, your arms messily flailing in the air, "And don't even get me started on the lame-ass excuses you make! What? You needed to water your plants? You couldn't even conjure a single sprout, let alone a pot plant even if you tried—"
"I–Okay, first of all, that is so not true–"
You raise a digit, causing him to halt mid-sentence, "And not only that, but maybe you should–I don't know, work on being more discreet with your identity because I literally saw you transform near a freaking construction site!"
Kenji's eyes nearly pop out of their sockets. "Shit, you saw me? When did you–"
"Over a month ago, with that pink dragon-looking kaiju." You were referring to Emi. At that, Kenji squints his eyes at you, "You knew for a whole month and didn't tell me!?"
"Shh, lower your voice, Ken! Someone's gonna hear us!" You hush, "And I was planning on telling you at some point! Believe me, but I-I just didn't know how to bring it up! It's not exactly the smoothest conversation starter, y'know?" You look at him guiltily, your voice growing quiet, "I was kinda hoping that you'd tell me over time...when you were ready."
Kenji was now sporting a migraine, his mind trying to wrap around all the information you've just spewed at him. "You...you didn't tell anyone else about this, right?" He then asks anxiously. You were quick to shake your head, "No, of course not, and I wasn't planning to. I know how dangerous that information would be if it landed in the wrong hands—"
"And you do realise that you knowing all this would put you into danger, right?" Kenji says seriously. His own comment causes him to slump over at the counter, sighing heavily as he holds his head in his hands, "...it's why I never wanted you to know in the first place."
A small pang of hurt hits you as he admits this, but you decide to let it slide, knowing where Kenji was coming from. "Hey, come on, I'm stronger than I look, Ken. At least give me some credit over here," you attempt to liven up the mood, nudging him with your elbow. "Apart from kaiju, there are some really dangerous people out there, [Y/n]. You and I don't know what they're capable of," he mumbles into his arms, his gaze remaining on the table. Having you roped into his Ultra-Man business opened a lot of opportunities for danger to strike at any angle. Kenji wouldn't forgive himself if something were to happen to you, knowing that it could've been avoided in the first place. Heck, look what happened with the KDF.
Your eyes soften at his concern, pressing your lips into a thin line as you let out a small huff. "Look, we'll figure something out. But in the meantime, it'll be okay. I'll be fine, Ken."
"But—ow!" Kenji winces as you flick him on the forehead. You click your tongue in mild annoyance, speaking once more to reiterate as he rubs the reddened spot on his head, "I said, I'll be fine. So, enough with the brooding, Ken. What's done is done, okay? Nothing's going to chance the fact that I already know, and there's no point in entertaining the 'what if's." You then cross your arms against your chest, before softly muttering under your breath, "...and plus, you definitely gotta work on that transforming gimic of yours. You're gonna give yourself away with that clumsy technique."
Kenji initially gave you an unimpressed look, but he couldn't help the small grin that grew on his face as he spotted the mischievous glint in your eyes. You were definitely poking fun at him now. He lets out an audible scoff in response. "Oh yeah? I'd like to see you try. I bet if you were in my place, your identity would already be headlining all the news outlets within minutes!" You roll your eyes at this but you end up joining in on his laughter, chuckling alongside him.
Soon after, there was a brief and quiet moment of contemplation, and you found yourself staring at Kenji's profile. His confession wasn't left forgotten as your mind slowly picked up the pieces from earlier and soon, you found yourself growing increasingly flustered at the memory. The thing is, you did in fact reciprocate his feelings. With his success, you didn't think he'd even so much as spare a glance in your direction, expecting him to settle for someone of his calibre. You always thought that he was way beyond your league, so of course, you had your insecurities. But now, even if it was only for a brief moment, they all seemed to have dissipated and was now replaced by a warm, fuzzy sensation.
"Hey...so, uhm...about your confession," you quietly muster, unable to look at him straight in the eye, "...I guess I should give you my answer, huh?" Kenji's posture straightens in response as an uneasy expression takes over his features, having been reminded of his humiliation, "[Y/n], wait. Like I said, you don't have to say anything right now if you don't want to—" You didn't really comprehend what he was saying at that point, distracted by the loud thumping of your heart against your ears.
You bite your lip nervously, adjusting yourself in your seat to face him properly as Kenji continues to waffle on about your regard. Before your nerves could've forced you to back down, you were quick to dip forward and place a small peck against his cheek, just at the corner of his lips — you also made sure to have it linger a bit to send your message across better. Kenji stiffens as a result, shutting him up completely as a dumb-struck look strikes his face. "I like you too, Ken..." you say when you pull away, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
It takes a few moments for Kenji to fully comprehend what just happened, before a shy, boyish giggle escapes his lips. "Well...I did not expect this to go the way it did," he airly says in a mixture of shock and amusement. You smile widely at him, finding his expression very endearing. "Oh, yeah? Then what did you have planned for me then, hot-shot?" You tease lightly with newfound confidence, leaning against the counter as you rest your chin on your hands. Kenji smirks. "Well, I was planning on serenading you and sweeping you off of your feet, and then carrying you off into the sunset," he jokes lowly, mirroring you. At this point, your faces were just centimetres away, and Kenji could practically feel the warmth radiating off of you. His eyes then dart towards your lips, thinking about how plush and inviting they looked, before looking back up towards your face. You also found yourself doing the same.
It was magnetising, the way you both naturally closed the gap between yourselves. His lips perfectly moulded itself with yours as his hands found its way to your cheeks, pulling you closer towards him. Your own fingers crept its way up the base of his neck, interlacing them as you also tugged him into you.
Ans so, after this eventful aftermath, and at the end of the day, Kenji (begrudgingly) had no more secrets to hide from you.
A/N: YALL...the absolute chokehold this man has on me is INSANE...but otherwise, thank you for reading! As always, constructive criticism is much appreciated!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TW: at some point it contains sexual content, so if you're feeling uncomfortable with it, please do not read
Author's note: sorry Nonnie you waited so long‼️ I absolutely enjoyed and missed writing headcanons so give bun bun more 🗣️🗣️
Hockey player!Anakin who is definitely an ass/boobs man. He loves to watch your round ass in tight jeans where he can just put his hand inside one of your pockets, showing you off to entire school. When it comes to breasts he loves to have them in his hands, to feel them fill his palms, to feel their weight, to jingle them and make nipples hard, although I think he'd just stare blindly, like a starved man, at your cleavage if you had some more revealing shirt, of course in private since he wouldn't just ogle you in front of everyone
Hockey player!Anakin who made love to you after his hockey game;
Yet another thrust slipped from his hips - was way too smooth - swollen, shaky lips parting to exhale a moan. Sweat trippled down the edge of his curl, twirling around the wet hair before falling down his forehead
"Ani--" you mewl, before he understood the assignment and pressed his lips to yours, any sounds bubbling in your throat became swallowed by his tongue pushing against yours
“Fuck--still--so tight,” he rasped, flushed face burying in your neck. Damp curls tickling your skin, your ears following the vivid sound of skin slapping and wet sounds colliding “Missed you all game, couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
You whimpered, nails dragging down his back, catching on the fabric of his jersey. “Ani,” you choked, legs spreading wider, giving him new angle, to which he accepted; speeding up his movements
“I know, baby. I know,” he moaned, his cock filling you in ways that left you breathless, eyes rolling behind your head. “Coudlnt win this without you” his pace faltered. Hand curled under your knee, pulling it higher against his hip, other hand cradled your sensitive breast. “Youre my dream girl” he whispered “Always here for me, always mine, always cheering me on in this jersey of mine..so casually having my name on your back.”
Another kiss to your neck, which felt as if you were his only one oxygen. With each deep, slow thrust, he unraveled, moaning into your neck
“God,” he groaned, voice breaking as he kissed you again, softer this time, sucking on the spot. “the best celebration ever”
Hockey player!Anakin who always has messy hair with that one curl falling over his brow
Hockey player!Anakin who took you skating;
“C’mon, babe, just relax. You’re doing great--you haven’t fallen yet,” voice teasing yet encouraging.
“Exactly… thanks to this railing,” you muttered, your baby steps on the ice resembling a cautious toddler.
A soft chuckle escaped his throat as he watched you grip the railing like it was the only lifeline. Despite your clear anxiety, he found your determination charmingly cute. He took a step closer, placing his hands gently on your hips
“You’ve got to ease up a little. Can’t you feel how shaky your legs are? You look like a baby deer trying to stand for the first time,” he joked, a warm smile spreading across his face.
You gasped as your skates slipped slightly, your grip on the railing tightening instinctively.
He couldn’t help but laugh, watching the panic in your eyes as you fought to keep your balance. There was something undeniably endearing about your vulnerability, and he secretly relished the moment. Moving behind you, he positioned himself closely, his hands firmly yet gently holding your hips to support you.
“You’re holding onto that railing so tight, I think it might leave a dent,” he teased, fingers brushing lightly along your sides.
“No, no, no!” you exclaimed, voice rising in desperation as he nudged you away from your only source of stability.
Another laugh escaped him, a mix of amusement and affection, as he noted the startled look on your face. It was irresistibly cute to see you so flustered. He tightened his grip on your hips, speaking softly, “I’m right here. I’ve got you. Just glide slowly.”
“I hate you so much,” you muttered, taking a hesitant glide forward, your legs trembling beneath you.
“It’s okay, baby…” he soothed, hands steadying you as you made your way across the ice. "I forgive you" another joke slipping through his lips
“You’re doing wonderfully tho” he reassured, though the smirk on his lips betrayed how hard he was trying to suppress his amusement at your plight.
You clung to his arm as if it were your next, only lifeline.
“Relax,” voice a soothing mix of humor and warmth “I promise, you’re safe with me.”
“We won’t fall, right?”
He couldn’t resist the smirk that spread across his lips at your anxious question. There was a playful urge to tease you just a bit more, knowing how nervous you were.
“Well, that depends…” tone light and playful. “I won’t fall because I can skate, but you… well, you might be a different story.”
“Just--shut up!” you shot back, the irritation in your voice only making him laugh harder. He found a twisted satisfaction in your struggle, knowing it was all in good fun.
With a sudden surge of affection, he pressed a quick kiss to your cheek, unable to resist the sudden impulse.
“Ani, you’re distracting me,” you murmured, gaze dropping to the ice, a frown adorning your lips.
“Sorry…” sparkle in his eyes betraying the amusement. “But seriously, you’re doing amazing.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, barely containing a chuckle. It was hard to hide his delight in watching you tackle something so simple yet, for you, so challenging. He gave your sides a gentle squeeze, a teasing smirk returning. “See? You’re not slipping as much as you think.”
Hockey player!Anakin who's definitely into hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows (optionally)
Hockey player!Anakin who, when he's going to sleep, is all tucked to his ears under a duvet. He can not sleep when he's not perfectly, comfortably curled. You'd definitely became his teddy bear, curled with him as well if you're sleeping with hi
Hockey player!Anakin who gave you his jersey with his name and number on your back, so everyone would know you're already, happily taken
Hockey player!Anakin who sometimes ended the game with bruised nose after getting into a fight
Hockey player!Anakin who you tease about the exercises he does with his teammates before the game, on the ice..that leave small room to imagination
Hockey player!Anakin who keeps his hand in your pocket..on your ass..while walking with you through school's halls
Hockey player!Anakin who loves roasted and salted corn
Hockey player!Anakin who can be such a dramatic baby girl on the ice;
After every game, if he’s tired, he’s a full-on dramatic baby. “Baby, they were trying to kill me out there,” he’d whine, flopping face-first onto the couch. “You have to kiss me better. You don’t even understand how rough it was.” And you’re rolling your eyes, but also kissing his bruises because, let’s be real, he’s your dramatic baby girl, and you adore him
If he gets called for a penalty, he rips his helmet off and runs his hand through his tousled curls, looking like a damn runway model as he skates to the penalty box. He mutters to himself the entire way, throwing the refs exaggerated “Are you serious right now?” looks.
AGAINST THE TIDE: PART THREE
paige x azzi
word count: 5.3k
A/N: Here’s a chapter with a lot more interaction between Paige and Azzi. Don’t do too much on my girl this chapter y’all she getting better😭. Let me know what you think and leave reactions! I’m low key starting chapter 5 today 🤭
—————————————————————————
April 2021
Azzi and Paige's respective seasons had come to an end, though in completely different fashions.
For Azzi, it was the perfect finale to her high school career. After a long recovery from her ACL and MCL injury, she returned stronger than anyone thought possible in her senior year. And she was able to cement her place as one of the best players in the nation after everyone questioned if she would be able to come back the same. She became a McDonald's All-American and earned the prestigious Morgan Wootten Player of the Year award on top of carrying her team to another state championship, leaving her high school legacy on the highest note possible. When she walked off the court for the final time in her high school jersey, the roar of the crowd and the embrace of her teammates felt like the perfect send-off. Azzi was content. She had conquered every challenge thrown her way, and now she was ready for the next chapter at UConn.
For Paige, the end of her freshman year at UConn was a much different story. On paper, her season was nothing short of extraordinary. She had helped the Huskies defeat their rivals time and time again, putting on performances that left commentators and fans in awe. She’d scored a season-high 32 points and dished out 7 assists against St. John’s of New York—a game where it seemed like her fierce competitiveness toward the St. John’s she’d grown up playing against carried over to this completely unrelated team.
The accolades poured in. Paige was named Big East Player of the Year, unanimous Big East Freshman of the Year, and helped UConn secure the Big East Championship title. She had the most points by any UConn player in their NCAA tournament debut. By the end of the season, she’d been crowned AP Player of the Year and Naismith College Player of the Year—the first freshman in history to earn both honors.
But none of that mattered to Paige.
For all the individual awards and historic milestones, she couldn't forgive herself for how the season ended. UConn had made it to the Final Four, and the weight of expectations—both internal and external—was immense. Paige believed it was her job to lead her team to a national championship, but when they lost to Arizona in the semifinals, everything came crashing down for her.
She replayed the game in her mind constantly, scrutinizing every missed shot, every turnover, every moment she thought she could have done more. The praise and accolades felt hollow, and no one could convince her otherwise. For Paige, and according to the media, the loss was a failure. It didn’t matter that she was only 19 years old, it didn’t matter that she was only a freshman, the media tore into her from every angle and she hated herself for giving them the room to talk in the first place, despite what everyone around her said. If she had won they wouldn’t have had anything to say.
While Azzi basked in the glow of a picture perfect end to her high school journey, Paige drowned herself in guilt and frustration. Day after day, she was in the gym, pushing herself harder and harder. No one had to tell her to work—she was relentless. The sound of basketballs hitting the court echoing through an otherwise empty gym.
For Paige, there was no off-season. The only way to make peace with her freshman year, she thought, was to be better.
Her freshman year had been historic. But Paige didn’t care about history. She only cared about winning, and anything less wasn’t good enough.
May 2021
Paige was back home in the DMV, spending her days exactly the way she had since the loss in the Final Four. The small, private space her trainer let her use had become her sanctuary. She had poured every ounce of herself into her offseason grind, putting on muscle and sharpening her skills. Each shot, each drill, each drop of sweat was a reminder of what she wanted to fix.
The gym was empty, just how she liked it. Paige worked in solitude, her sneakers squeaking on the hardwood as she moved through her drills. The sharp echo of the ball bouncing against the floor filled the space. She was locked in, oblivious to everything but the rhythm of her workout.
The faint creak of the door opening didn’t even break her focus.
“Hey,” a familiar voice called out.
Paige barely glanced over, recognizing Azzi immediately. She gave a slight nod in polite acknowledgment but kept shooting. Azzi lingered near the door for a moment, unsure if she should stay or leave. Last summer, she would have turned around and walked away without hesitation like she almost did. But not this time. She stepped farther into the gym, watching Paige as the other girl moved with mechanical precision, no emotion on her face
After a while, Azzi spoke again, her voice cutting through the quiet. “Are we ever going to talk? You know, now that we’re going to be on the same team.”
Paige didn’t even look up. “Not really in the mood to talk today, sorry.” She said, launching another three-pointer that swished through the net.
Azzi sighed, crossing her arms. “Seems like a pattern,” she muttered, just loud enough for Paige to hear.
That made Paige pause. She caught the ball as it rebounded toward her and turned to face Azzi, her expression annoyed. “What the hell are you talking about?”
Azzi leaned against the wall, arms still folded. “You know what I’m talking about. When I came to visit UConn in December, you blew me off. You couldn’t even speak, let alone stick around for five minutes.”
Paige scoffed, dribbling the ball lazily as she shook her head. “Not everything is about you, Azzi.”
Azzi pushed off the wall, her brows furrowed. “That’s bullshit. You were avoiding me. Just stop being pussy and admit it.”
Paige let out a humorless laugh. “Contrary to this inflated-ass ego you seem to have, other people have things going on. It didn’t have shit to do with you Azzi.”
Azzi stared at her, stunned eyes almost bulging out of her head. “I have the ego? You can’t be serious right now?”
“Yes,” Paige said flatly, bouncing the ball once before shooting it again.
Azzi stepped closer, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “You couldn’t put your feelings aside for two seconds to welcome me to UConn because your ego’s so damn big.”
Paige rolled her eyes, spinning the ball on her hand before letting it drop to the floor. “Like I said, it didn’t have shit to do with you. I played like garbage the day before and needed to clear my head.”
Azzi tilted her head, her tone incredulous. “You played fine, Paige. I watched that game.”
Paige snorted, shaking her head as she bent to pick up the ball. “No, I didn’t.” She straightened up and started ticking off mistakes on her fingers. “I had a sloppy turnover, missed three shots that all hit the rim the exact same way because my footing was off, got scored on because I went under screens too many damn times…” Her voice was rising, her frustration with herself evident.
Azzi blinked, caught off guard by the laundry list of self-criticism. “That’s not even that bad, Paige. You’re just trying to find excuses for being childish and avoiding me.”
Paige’s eyes flashed as she now fully faced Azzi, her tone sharp. “See that’s your problem, Azzi. You’re fine with ‘not bad.’ You’re fine with mediocre shit and you get mad at people who aren’t.”
Azzi, clearly offended. “You don’t know shit about me if you think I’m fine with mediocre Paige.”
“Oh, I know enough,” Paige shot back, her voice laced with irritation as she shot the ball again.
Azzi let out a muttered, “Whatever,” as she turned away. She grabbed her basketball shoes, plopping down on the bench to lace them up. Afterward, she moved to stretch, her movements calm and deliberate, just like she always did.
The silence between them was heavy, but neither seemed willing to break it. Paige resumed her shooting, her focus sharp and a little intense now. Azzi followed suit, picking up a ball and taking her own shots. Unlike last summer, when they’d somehow found a rhythm together, this time they kept their distance, rebounding their own shots and staying on opposite ends of the half court.
The only sounds were the echo of the basketballs, the swish of the net, and their heavy breathing. The tension that lingered between them from the argument didn’t dissipate, but they both seemed like they were just going to ignore it.
Paige’s focus faltered as her phone, lying on the bench nearby, began to ring. The sharp tone interrupted her music in her ears, cutting into her concentration. She ignored it the first time, then the second, but by the third, she was definitely irritated.
“Are we serious?” she muttered under her breath, catching the ball after it went through the net and tucking it under her arm. She walked over to the bench, her frustration evident in every step. Grabbing the phone, she glanced at the screen before answering.
“Yes, E?” Paige said, clearly irritated with everything happening today.
Azzi glanced over briefly but kept shooting as she heard the nickname she knew was for Evina, her movements still smooth and efficient. She couldn’t help but listen to Paige’s side of the conversation, even if she pretended not to.
“I’m fine,” Paige said, her tone clipped. A pause, then, “No, I don’t need you guys checking in on me every five minutes. I’m not a kid.”
Azzi caught her rebound, her curiosity piqued. She heard Paige’s exasperated sigh before she continued. “I said I’m fine!…I’m sorry…I’m just in the gym, okay?”
Another pause, longer this time. Paige’s expression softened slightly, though her tone remained defensive. “Yes, I’m eating. No, I’m not overdoing it. Can you guys please just stop hovering for like two seconds? I swear I’m fine.”
Azzi missed her next shot, distracted by the way Paige’s voice wavered slightly on the last sentence. She retrieved the ball and glanced over again, noting the way Paige’s jaw was clenched slightly with the conversation.
“Yes E, I get it, okay? I do. But I don’t need you to—” Paige stopped mid-sentence, closing her eyes and letting out a frustrated breath. “Yeah, I know it’s not my fault–Yes I know. Ok, I’ll call you later.”
She hung up abruptly, tossing her phone back onto the bench with more force than necessary. Her shoulders sagged for a moment before she closed her eyes, took a deep breath and straightened up, spinning the ball in her hands as she made her way back to the court.
Azzi didn’t say anything, but she watched Paige carefully, her expression unreadable. Paige didn’t acknowledge her, resuming her shooting with a little more force than before, as if trying to work out her frustrations on the court.
The silence between them stretched on, filled only by the rhythm of bouncing balls and the occasional swish of a perfect shot.
July 2021
The short break before heading to UConn for the summer session had gone by a little too quickly for Azzi. It felt like one moment she was at home with her family, soaking up their familiar warmth, and the next, she was packing her bags, giving tight hugs, and heading off to start a new chapter in Connecticut. The thought of being at UConn felt surreal, even though she’d visited before. Now it was official—she was part of the team.
The roster had shifted quite a bit since her last visit. Azzi wasn’t the only fresh face; two other freshmen, Caroline and Amari, had joined the team. The sophomore class had thinned out, now consisting of only Paige, Aaliyah, Nika, and Piath. Aubrey was the only junior on the team, and was known for her quiet but steady presence on the court. The upperclassmen rounded out the roster, with seniors Christyn and Olivia bringing their experience, Evina stepping into a leadership role, and Dorka, a graduate transfer, joining the fold for her first year at UConn.
It was a balanced team, a blend of youth and experience, and Azzi felt a mix of nerves and excitement at the thought of working with them. The expectations were high, but she was ready.
From the moment she arrived, the practices were intense. UConn’s reputation as a basketball powerhouse wasn’t just for show, and the demands were grueling on Azzi’s body. The upperclassmen set the tone, with Evina and Christyn emerging as clear leaders, guiding the team both on and off the court. Paige, despite being only a sophomore, was right there with them. She had an undeniable presence, her skills speaking louder than words, and her surprisingly calm demeanor commanded respect everyday at practice.
Azzi, however, was still trying to get a read on Paige. The girl was an enigma. For someone who could be so fiery and competitive on the court, Paige seemed almost indifferent to Azzi off it. She didn’t go out of her way to ignore her, but she didn’t engage either. Paige showed up to team bonding events, polite and cordial, but her interactions with Azzi were nonexistent unless they were arguing during drills or scrimmages.
It was frustrating, to say the least. Azzi couldn’t tell if Paige didn’t like her or just didn’t care for her presence. And yet, somehow, during today’s team bonding activity—a scavenger hunt organized by Coach CD, of all things—Azzi found herself assigned as Paige’s partner.
Paige muttered something under her breath when the pairs were announced .
Azzi crossed her arms, arching a brow. “Trust me, I’m not exactly jumping for joy here either.”
Paige rolled her eyes at Azzi’s comment , adjusting the strap of her backpack. “Let’s just go.”
The rest of the team was already scattering in pairs, armed with clue sheets and a mix of determination and excitement. Azzi glanced at their first clue and sighed. This was going to be a long afternoon.
The two of them trudged through the scavenger hunt, their movements as tense as the silence between them. Paige seemed perfectly at ease with it, her eyes fixed on the list in her hand. Azzi, on the other hand, was brimming with unspoken frustration. She wasn’t one to hold things in, and after several minutes of biting her tongue, she couldn’t take it anymore.
“Why don’t you like me?” Azzi blurted out, the words cutting through the quiet.
Paige barely looked up from her paper. “I don’t not like you,” she replied, her tone not hinting at her emotion.
Azzi huffed, folding her arms as she followed Paige. “Yeah, sure. That’s why you barely talk to me outside of practice. That’s why all you do is argue with me when we scrimmage. And don’t think I haven’t noticed the way you roll your eyes every time I open my mouth.”
Paige finally stopped walking, turning to face Azzi with a mixture of confusion and something else. “You’re reading too much into it Azzi. Just because we don’t hang out doesn’t mean I don’t like you.”
Azzi raised an eyebrow, her expression incredulous. “Then what does it mean, Paige? Because from where I’m standing, it sure feels like you’ve decided you can’t stand me and you bust my ass everyday in practice.”
Paige sighed, glancing around as if hoping for the next clue to appear and rescue her from the conversation. “That doesn’t mean I don’t like you. It just means I think you need to be better.”
Azzi blinked, caught off guard by the bluntness of the statement. “Better?”
“Yeah,” Paige said, her voice even. “You’re good, Azzi. Everyone on the planet knows you’re good. But if you want to be great—if you want to be what this team needs—you have to start acting like it.”
Azzi scoffed, her frustration bubbling over. “Are you kidding me? I work my ass off every single day. I’m in the gym just as much as you are—probably more.”
Paige shrugged, not bothered by that last comment knowing it wasn’t true. “It doesn’t matter how much you work if you don’t carry it with you onto the court. Until you start playing like you know you’re the second-best player on this team, it’s not going to mean anything.”
“Second best,” Azzi repeated, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Wow, what an honor.”
“Exactly,” Paige said, her eyes narrowing. “You don’t agree. You need to own that. Play like it. Make everyone feel it.”
Azzi shook her head, incredulous. “Just because I don’t have a giant ego like you doesn’t mean I don’t think I’m the best.”
“I don’t have an ego,” Paige said. “I just know what this team needs.”
Azzi stepped closer, her voice rising slightly. “Oh, you mean they need another uptight, self-centered recruit who thinks they have all the answers?”
Paige’s jaw tightened, but she kept her voice calm. “No, they need the top recruit they just got to stop being passive and start leading. They need someone who plays like they know they’re the best so the rest of the team can feed off of it.”
Azzi let out a bitter laugh. “So... basically an asshole?”
Paige exhaled sharply, clearly done with the conversation. She shook her head and turned back to the scavenger hunt, muttering, “You don’t get it.”
“No, I don’t,” Azzi shot back, her tone challenging. “And you know what? You don’t get me either. You think you’ve got me all figured out, like I’m some shy, passive player who’s too scared to take charge. But you don’t know the first thing about me Paige.”
Paige stopped walking, spinning around to face Azzi. “And you think you know me? You think I’m just some uptight ass self-absorbed player who doesn’t care about anyone else? I just have my own shit to deal with. Not everything is about you.”
Azzi bristled at the words, her voice dropping to a quieter but still heated tone. “I never said it was about me. But you could at least try to make me feel like I’m part of this team instead of treating me like an outsider.”
Paige’s expression softened for just a moment, but she quickly masked it with a shrug. “Maybe stop acting like one.”
Azzi stared at her, her frustration mixing with hurt. “You really think I’m not trying?”
Paige didn’t answer right away, her eyes flicking back to the scavenger hunt paper. “No that’s not what I said, I think you’re holding yourself back. And this team doesn’t have time for that.”
Azzi shook her head, biting back a retort. They resumed walking, the silence between them now heavier than before. Paige stayed focused on the clues, while Azzi followed a step behind, her mind racing with everything they had just said—and left unsaid.
After a stretch of silence, the tension between them still hung heavy in the air. Azzi walked a step behind Paige, her frustration simmering beneath the surface as Paige stayed focused on the scavenger hunt paper, seemingly unaffected.
Finally, Paige slowed her steps, glancing over her shoulder. Her voice was quieter this time but still firm. “Azzi… I don’t not like you. Seriously.”
Azzi looked up, startled by the unexpected comment. “Could’ve fooled me,” she muttered.
Paige turned to face her, her expression unreadable. “You belong on this team. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t. And yeah, you can be frustrating as hell and I definitely don’t agree with a lot of the things you say, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re good. Doesn’t mean I don’t like you and I’m sorry if I made you think that.”
Azzi blinked, caught off guard by the blunt acknowledgment. She shifted her weight, her frustration tempered but not entirely gone. “Well, maybe if you didn’t act like I had something to prove all the time, I’d actually feel like I belonged.”
Paige exhaled sharply, shaking her head. “Pushing you is how I know you do belong. I wouldn’t waste my time talking to you if you didn’t.”
Azzi’s lips pressed into a thin line, but a flicker of understanding passed through her expression. “Fine,” she said after a beat, her tone quieter now. “But maybe try dialing it back a little. Just… once in a while. It’s tiring.”
Paige shrugged, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
Azzi rolled her eyes at the silence but didn’t press further. They resumed walking, the tension between them still lingering, but the weight of it had lessened—just enough to keep moving forward. Maybe Azzi would try her luck again at getting to know the blonde.
Later that night the team was gathered in one of the larger suites, the atmosphere buzzing with energy as conversations overlapped and laughter echoed through the space. Players lounged across couches and the carpeted floor, munching on snacks and joking around. It was one of the nightly bonding sessions the seniors insisted on, a tradition meant to bring the team closer as the season loomed.
Paige sat at one end of the couch, scrolling through her phone with a focused expression. Azzi, perched on the armrest opposite her, noticed how Paige’s grip on her phone tightened slightly, her jaw set in a way that betrayed her usual calm demeanor during times like this. Curiosity piqued, Azzi leaned subtly to get a glimpse of what Paige was reading. The headline immediately made her frown: “Paige Bueckers: Can She Handle the Pressure This Season?”
The article was harsh but clearly biased, questioning Paige’s ability to bounce back from the previous year’s challenges. Paige’s face betrayed nothing, but Azzi could feel the tension radiating from her as her jaw continued to tighten.
Without a word, Paige suddenly stood, catching everyone’s attention.
“Where are you going?” Nika asked from her spot on the floor, looking up with a raised brow.
“The gym,” Paige replied flatly.
A collective groan went around the room.
“Come on,” Christyn said, leaning back against the armrest of a chair. “We’re supposed to be bonding, not sneaking off to the gym again.”
“You’ve been there all day already,” Olivia added, shaking her head. “What’s left to work on?”
Paige crossed her arms, clearly unimpressed by the protests. “You don’t have to drag me out later I swear. I’ll be fine.”
Before anyone else could chime in, Azzi spoke up, her voice cutting through the noise. “I’ll go with her.”
The room fell silent, and all eyes turned to Azzi. Nika blinked, looking as though she misheard.
“Wait, what?” Aaliyah asked, tilting her head.
“Azzi, you good?” Christyn asked, confused about her voluntarily being around Paige.
Even Paige hesitated, glancing at Azzi with a mix of surprise and confusion. “You don’t have to—”
“It’s fine,” Azzi interrupted, her tone firm. “There’s some stuff we probably need to work on together anyway.”
Paige’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if trying to figure out Azzi’s angle, but she didn’t argue.
Nika glanced at Caroline, who sat beside her on the floor. “Am I the only one wondering what’s going on here?”
Caroline shrugged, looking equally curious. “Nope.”
“I mean, we’re all thinking it,” Dorka chimed in, earning a few quiet laughs.
Paige sighed, clearly ready to leave the scrutiny behind. “I’ll grab you some clothes,” she muttered, already heading toward her room.
Azzi stood, ignoring the murmurs and exchanged glances from the team. Aubrey, who had been quietly observing from the corner, gave her a small smile, the only one not visibly surprised.
As Azzi followed Paige out of the suite, Nika leaned toward Aaliyah, whispering just loud enough to be heard, “This is either going to end in a fistfight or... something we don’t want to know about.”
“Probably both,” Aaliyah replied with a smirk.
Azzi caught the comment but didn’t react having no idea what they were talking about.
Azzi and Paige had just finished an intense workout. They worked through it together in silence for the most part with the occasional high five or pay on the back. The gym was eerily quiet at this hour, with only the hum of the overhead lights and their heavy breaths filling the space. Both of them were seated on the floor, backs resting against the padded wall, their bodies dripping with sweat.
Paige let her head fall back for a moment, staring up at the ceiling before finally looking at Azzi. “Thanks,” she said, her voice softer than usual.
Azzi glanced over at her, slightly caught off guard. It wasn’t the thank-you that surprised her—it was the way Paige was actually looking at her. For the first time, there wasn’t a guarded or dismissive edge in her expression, just sincerity.
It threw Azzi off balance for a second, and without thinking, she blurted out, “Woah your eyes are blue.”
Paige raised an eyebrow, a small chuckle escaping her lips. “They sure are,” she said, amused.
Azzi shook her head, laughing at herself. “I just mean, I never noticed before,” she admitted. “Probably because you’re always glaring at me the few times you actually address me.”
Paige laughed again, the sound lighter than Azzi expected. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I know I can be... a bit much sometimes.”
Azzi shrugged, brushing it off.
They sat in comfortable silence for a beat before Azzi tapped her phone screen, the faint glow illuminating the time. “So, you wanna tell me why we’re in the gym at...” she squinted at the numbers, “1:47 a.m. on a Wednesday?”
Paige glanced at her, the corners of her mouth quirking up slightly. “I know why I’m here. You wanna tell me why you decided to join me?”
Azzi leaned her head back against the wall, smirking. “I knew they wouldn’t let you come if I didn’t. Plus, like I said earlier, there’s some things we need to work on.”
“Like what?” Paige asked, her curiosity piqued.
Azzi turned to face her more directly, her expression serious but still teasing. “Like you passing the ball where I’m going instead of where I am.”
Paige rolled her eyes, a playful scoff escaping her. “I’m a great passer.”
Azzi raised an eyebrow, her smirk growing. “And I’m the best shooter in the country. I move a lot. You need to figure out where I’m going to be, not just where I currently am.”
Paige blinked at her, processing the critique. Her lips twitched like she wanted to argue, but instead, she let out a small laugh, nodding slightly as she thought about it.
Azzi stood up, brushing off her shorts before grabbing the ball that sat nearby. She spun it in her hands and tilted her head toward the court. “Come on,” she said, motioning for Paige to follow her.
Paige smiled despite herself, pushing up from the floor. “Fine,” she said, her tone mock-defeated.
Azzi grinned. “Let’s see if you’re as great as you claim you are.”
Paige laughed, jogging after her toward the court, the tension between them starting to ease in the quiet rhythm of the game.
Paige and Azzi stood at the top of the key, the ball in Paige’s hands as Azzi explained what she’d meant earlier.
“You follow my eyes, just like everyone else,” Azzi said, dribbling the ball before passing it to Paige. “But my eyes don’t always tell you where I’m going. You’ve gotta look at my movements instead.”
Paige nodded slowly, absorbing the critique. She dribbled the ball once, then shifted her stance. “Alright,” she said, her voice intrigued. “Let’s run through it.”
They started with basic passes, Paige watching Azzi closely. Some were spot-on, hitting Azzi perfectly in stride. Others lagged slightly behind, forcing Azzi to pause or adjust.
“See?” Azzi said after one of those off passes, tossing the ball back to Paige. “You’re looking at where I am. You’ve gotta watch my hands.”
Paige tilted her head, brow furrowing. “Your hands?”
“Yeah,” Azzi said, holding them up. “My hands show you where I’m going to end up. Pay attention, and you’ll see it.”
Paige bounced the ball a couple of times, nodding. “Alright, let’s try again.”
They went through the drill several more times, Paige focusing on Azzi’s hands like she’d suggested. Slowly but surely, the passes started to click. Paige began to notice the subtle flicks of Azzi’s fingers or the way her hand angled before she cut. After a while, the passes were seamless, their movements flowing together effortlessly.
“See?” Azzi said, catching another perfect pass in stride. “Told you.”
Paige smirked, brushing a stray piece of hair from her face. “Guess you were right.”
“Always am,” Azzi teased, tossing the ball back.
The two of them had been running the same drill for what felt like forever. Paige’s passes were sharper now, landing perfectly in Azzi’s hands as she moved seamlessly through her cuts. The flow of their movements had become natural, like they’d been doing this together for years.
Azzi caught the ball mid-stride and jogged back to the top of the key, bouncing it casually. “You know it’s almost three, right?” she said, glancing at the clock.
Paige paused, hands resting on her hips. “They’re going to kill you for letting me stay this late,” she said, half-smirking. “You’re supposed to be the responsible one, remember?”
Azzi shrugged, her lips curving into a small smile. “They never said what time you had to leave,” she replied. “All they said was that it was supposed to be team bonding.” She held the ball out toward Paige. “I’d say we bonded a little bit. Plus,” she added, her smile widening, “we haven’t argued the whole time we’ve been here, so that’s a win.”
Paige chuckled, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the hem of her shirt. “Guess you’ve got a point.” She reached out and took the ball from Azzi. “And for the record, I wouldn’t call you responsible. You’re just as bad as me for sticking around this long.”
Azzi laughed softly, leaning back against the padded wall at the baseline. “Maybe. But if you didn’t notice, I’m not the one who dragged us here in the middle of the night.”
Paige shot her a playful glare, bouncing the ball a couple of times. “Fair enough. But you didn’t exactly put up a fight about it either.”
Azzi raised an eyebrow. “Because I saw how tense you were and someone had to make sure you didn’t overdo it. Like I said—team bonding.”
Paige shook her head, laughing under her breath as she lined up a shot. The ball arced perfectly through the air, swishing cleanly through the net. “Fine,” she said, turning to Azzi. “But if they ask, this was your idea.”
Azzi rolled her eyes, pushing off the wall. “Yeah, sure. I’m sure they’ll believe that.” She walked over and retrieved the ball, tossing it back to Paige.
For a moment, they stood there in the quiet gym, the weight of the night settling between them. Paige glanced at Azzi, a hint of gratitude in her expression. “Thanks, by the way. For coming with me.”
Azzi shrugged, though her smile softened. “Don’t mention it.”
Paige held the ball, debating for a second. Then she smirked. “One more run?”
Azzi sighed, shaking her head with a chuckle. “Fine. But only one more.”
“Promise,” Paige said, already moving to her spot.
Azzi jogged to hers, the exhaustion fading as they fell back into the rhythm they’d built over the past few hours. It was definitely more than one run through.
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child attends a school that provides a safe environment. From preschool to secondary school, children spend the majority of their time at school, and as parents, this is one of the most crucial decisions to make. While there are many schools to pick from, it must be difficult for parents to make a decision because just one decision could change the lives of their children. Let us first establish the foundation on which the choice will be decided.
Lottie's Pet
Tumblr media
Charlotte "Lottie" Matthews x Fem!Reader
Trigger Warnings: SMUT, MDNI. Mean, dominant Lottie. Degradation, jealousy, she's a bit harsh, BDSM. She fucks herself on R's tongue.
Word Count: 1,500 words
Request: "mean dom Lottie or nat ( either or works ! ) doming reader"
Request here please! | Please check out my masterlist.
It was no secret that Lottie was starting to go on a power trip, leading the group into ritualistic ceremonies and becoming more of a cult-leader than someone who was just trying to survive the Canadian Wilderness. When most people say It, they mean God, but when Lottie says It, she means the vast wilderness that they've been thrown into by her father's shitty private plane. Still, (Y/n) found herself under the girl's influence somehow, the right-hand to Lottie Matthews, who barely has to lift a single finger. She just has to attend to Lottie. Which she does dutifully, as Sappho once did for Aphrodite, worshipping the ground the girl walked on.
But that wasn't exactly new, was it? After all, this relationship that the two girls accumulated began their junior year of high school when they made the Varsity team. They celebrated, as best friends in 1995 do. With wine coolers and making out while MTV blasted on Lottie's Sony Trinitron Television Set. It was no secret that Lottie was the controlling one when it came to the two. She wasn't one to express jealousy in front of others, not giving away just how deep her homoerotic friendship with her best friend ran. Not in a small town in New Jersey in the 1990s. Not when they didn't know what they were doing themselves. Instead, she waited patiently for (Y/n) to come to her house after school where she grabbed her chin and told her who she belonged to.
It's been that way ever since then. During Doomcoming, the only person who couldn't participate in kissing Travis, was (Y/n). "Don't touch him," Lottie demanded, as if she was speaking for the world around her. She had a look on her face that (Y/n), high on shrooms, couldn't decipher. "It said you belong to me. That's the way it's going to be, understood?" She said, gripping (Y/n)'s cheeks with narrowed eyes. (Y/n) gave a feeble nod because, if she were being honest, she loved when Lottie told her what to do. She didn't even believe in all of the cult-like worship the group had partaken it. Though, she understood that they were trying to believe in something in order to get a grip on this new reality they've been forced to deal with.
Lottie drew protection symbols on Natalie and Travis's hands, nodding at them stiffly. While Travis was quick to surrender himself to Lottie's way, though (Y/n) expected it was more than their newfound religion by the way he looked at her at times, Natalie was more wary of the symbol. It seemed Natalie was the only one who wasn't completely losing her mind as they tried to survive. As spring was approaching and the snow had mostly vanished, it felt as though things were looking up. They needed Natalie's logic, butt (Y/n) wasn't about to agree with any of the skeptic words that Natalie would rant off to her as (Y/n) wished them luck hunting.
She didn't notice the way Lottie's warm brown eyes grew cold at the way (Y/n) even thought about nodding to whatever non-believer bullshit Natalie was spewing. Not when Lottie, so clearly, heard and understand the unseen force that was tucked within the wilderness around them. Instead, she sent everyone off on chores as (Y/n) approached. There was a darkness in her eyes that reminded (Y/n) off the night Ethan Reynolds kissed her, startling the girl. She had, obviously pushed him off, but it didn't make the deeply disgruntled feeling in Lottie's chest disappear until that night as she fucked her cunt against (Y/n)'s tongue.
(Y/n) froze slightly at the look in the girl's eyes. In the Wilderness, they didn't have to hide who they were to each other. Especially once Van and Taissa kissed in front of everyone and Coach Ben came out as gay. So, they didn't. They just didn't label it either. The entire group just knew to keep their hands off (Y/n). It was as simple as that. Or, it should've been. Leave it to (Y/n) to break the rules, squeezing Nat's arm as she went off with Travis.
"Get inside," Lottie commanded, her tone cold. (Y/n) nodded, knowing by the look in the girl's gaze that she was in trouble. She followed her instructions well, trying not to wince at the tone Lottie was using on her. "So, tell me. Do you believe what I say about 'It,' or are you just pretending to appease me? Knowing Natalie, I'm sure she was saying how crazy I am, right? And what did you do but nod? It's odd… Normally, you do whatever I say and agree with me… Do you just decide you're going to be slut for other people, too, and bend over backwards to appease them? Is that what is going on between you and Nat?"
(Y/n) doesn't have time to answer and Lottie points down. She doesn't need to speak. (Y/n) falls to her knees, already know the drill. "You're so pathetic. I'm not going to let Natalie separate us. I'm not going to let you be a whore and slut it out for her, too. You're mine." She gripped the girl's chin tightly, a menacing glower taking over her features, sending a shiver down (Y/n)'s spine.
Lottie knew the tasks would take time, and Coach Ben was outside now that the ground was clear. And, fuck, Lottie was so needy right now. She stripped out of all her clothes, looking at (Y/n) disapprovingly. "I want you to worship me. When I feel like you have done a good enough job, which I doubt, I might let you eat me out. Understood?" Another feeble nod. (Y/n)'s lack of words made Lottie's jaw clench. It wasn't good enough for her. So, she took the back of (Y/n)'s hair, yanking it back to make her look up. "Understood?" She repeated through gritted teeth.
"Y-yes, I understand." (Y/n) immediately got to work after Lottie released her tight grip on the girl's hair. Her lips kissed from her bump of her ankle bone. Slow kisses led up Lottie's body, fingers exploring her. (Y/n)'s fingers were once smooth, but over the course of the harsh atmosphere of the wilderness, it's lost it's softness, callouses finding their way upon her fingertips and palms. Lottie didn't mind, though. The roughness contrasting with the gentle and worshipping touch of her lover's hand was an intoxicating mix to her. As much as she wanted to punish (Y/n), limiting her to just her body- not her boobs, not her cunt or clit- she couldn't. She needed to be fucked too badly.
So, she finally gave in. Only, (Y/n) wasn't allowed to touch, having her hands tied and restricted behind her back. "Stick out your tongue." She stated, something (Y/n) did instantly. She clicked her tongue with a smirk. "Good. I love it when you act like such a pathetic little slut for me." Lottie smirked before one hand gripped (Y/n) shoulder, the gripping her hair. (Y/n) moaned when Lottie's dripping cunt was shoved in her face. "Take me. All of me." She rode (Y/n)'s tongue, pushing her face deeper in her clit.
Thankfully, she had (Y/n) practice on her before over the course of almost two years of them being exclusive, just not out. The amount of sex they had taught (Y/n) how to work Lottie while Lottie worked her. She knew her head would hurt later from Lottie's strong grip, but she didn't care. Instead, she helped the girl relieve her tension from the Wilderness. She let Lottie use her, degrade her. She knew as soon as this was over, Lottie would get dress, give her gentle kisses as if she didn't use her like some throw away doll. She liked the way Lottie fucked herself on her, screaming in pleasure as she finally cums, and (Y/n) is able to capture her orgasm as if it was ambrosia from the Gods. Because to her it was.
When Lottie comes down from her high, she releases her fistful of hair and redresses. She then cleans up (Y/n), thumb running along her lower lip. She was soft at this moment, but then she hardens again. Though, (Y/n) knows that won't last long. Just until she gets her point across, then it was back to sweet, gentle Lottie. Two different personas. Out of bed, she was kind. In bed, she was mean and dominant. She pinched (Y/n)'s bottom lip. "Next time you have doubts about It, talk to me instead of just talking shit with Natalie, got it? You're mine. Not Natalie's." She released (Y/n)'s now swollen lip once she nods. Then, she kisses her deeply, moaning at the taste of herself now being slid along her tongue by (Y/n)'s.
Kit literally tops Hollywood Reporter list
Tumblr media
Next Gen Talent 2024: The 10 Hottest Young Stars in Hollywood
From Netflix-turned-Broadway sensation Kit Connor to DC newcomer Aaron Pierre, meet the young stars climbing everyone’s call sheet.
Thank you for the tipoff @thegoldenretrieverandthegaynerd (X)
Tumblr media
Kit Connor and Josh Rivera photographed November 11th at Broken Shaker in New York; Source: Hollywood Reporter (X)
1. Kit Connor
Connor is ready to break out beyond high school. He built his career as a child actor (see him as a young Elton John in Rocketman) before scoring the lead role in the high school rom-com series Heartstopper. This desire to graduate is part of what drew the Brit to Broadway, where he’s currently leading Romeo + Juliet with Rachel Zegler, bringing Shakespeare to the Gen Z masses. “It just felt ballsy,” Connor says. “It’s been what I’ve been trying to do with my career decisions recently, just try and do things that are a little bit more ballsy.” Connor, 20, isn’t sure if Heartstopper will return for a fourth season, but after the curtain goes down on his Broadway stint, he’ll start promoting his most adult role yet in Alex Garland’s A24 thriller Warfare. After that, he says, “I’d like to take a little break just so that I can kind of cleanse my mind and my palate, and then I’d like to do something completely different.” He adds, “I want to try and spend the next couple years just doing quite hard stuff so that I can try and force myself to get better.”
IF I WASN’T AN ACTOR I’D BE “I would first and foremost be a student due to my age. [My major] would probably be something like film studies, English or history, those are the subjects I found the most interesting in school because they were about people. I never did well with numbers. Still don’t.”
THE PERSON I AM DYING TO WORK WITH “I would love to work with Josh O’Connor. He and I are friendly, and every time I see him I think how I would love to see him at work.”
HOW I DECOMPRESS ON SET “I like my private time. On Warfare, we didn’t do that at all. Every night we did everything together and I wouldn’t have changed it at all. But a lot of time on jobs, I go home and just sit and listen to music.”
BEST ADVICE I’VE GOTTEN WORKING IN ENTERTAINMENT “Trusting the process. Quite a lot of my friends in the industry have given me that general advice.”
SONG OR ALBUM I HAVE ON REPEAT “David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. I used to, at the beginning of the run of the play, I was listening to a lot of music that would try to hype me up because I wanted to have a load of energy going into the play but then I started re-listening to that album‚ “Rock and Roll Suicide”, “Five Years”, “Moonage Daydream” — that put me in a good mindset for [the play].”
THE MOVIE OR SERIES I AM OBSESSED WITH “The Sopranos. I started watching it when I got to [New York] because I thought Jersey is just around the corner.”
MOST HOLLYWOOD THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME “There is something pretty crazy about seeing your face on a billboard in any capacity.”
It was a crisp, sunny afternoon as you walked through the stadium gates, your heart fluttering in your chest with a mix of excitement and nerves. Jude had invited you to watch his match, which wasn’t unusual.. you’d been to a few games before. But this time was different. This time, he’d invited you to sit in his family’s box.
The family box.. you thought, taking a deep breath. You and Jude had been dancing around each other for a while now. He was sweet, charming and more than a little flirtatious but neither of you had made a move to define what was happening between you. Today felt like a step.. a big one.
Your phone buzzed as you reached the private entrance. It was Jude. “Hope you made it okay! You’ll be with my family, don’t be nervous. They’re going to love you.”
You smiled at the message, feeling a little more at ease but still anxious as you reached the door to the box. With a final deep breath, you opened it.
The warmth inside was immediate, both from the heating and the atmosphere. People were already chatting, smiling, some wearing jerseys with Bellingham on the back. Then, almost immediately, you spotted a woman who could only be Jude’s mother, Denise. She had the same bright, warm eyes, the same easy smile you’d seen so often on her son. She looked over as you entered and immediately stood up, her face lighting up with recognition.
“Oh! You must be her!” she said, hurrying over. “Jude’s told us so much about you!”
Your heart skipped a beat and you smiled shyly. “Hi, yes, that’s me. It’s so nice to meet you, Mrs. Bellingham.”
“Oh please, call me Denise.” she said warmly.. pulling you into a hug before you could react. “I’m so happy you’re here! Jude was so excited when he told me you were coming. He couldn’t stop smiling.” She paused.. then added with a wink “But I’m sure you know that already.”
You felt your cheeks warm at the mention of Jude’s excitement and Denise noticed, her eyes twinkling with amusement. She led you over to a seat next to her as the game was about to begin, her hand still resting on your arm in a comforting, maternal way.
As the game kicked off, the tension you’d felt earlier slowly melted away. Sitting next to Denise was like sitting with an old friend. She was easy to talk to and you quickly found yourself chatting about all sorts of things.. football, Jude’s childhood, your shared experiences of supporting him. Every now and then, she’d throw in a cheeky comment about Jude that would make you laugh.
“At least once a week when he was little.” she said with a chuckle “He’d come home from school with a new scrape or bruise from playing football at recess. The boy just couldn’t sit still.” she glanced at the pitch where Jude was commanding the midfield with his usual grace. “Some things never change, do they?”
You laughed, feeling a swell of affection for the image of a younger, clumsier Jude and Denise watched you carefully, her smile softening. She seemed to be waiting for the right moment to say something and you noticed the way she was fidgeting slightly with the edge of her scarf, like she was holding back.
As the match progressed, there were a few tense moments but every time Jude did something brilliant, which was often, Denise would nudge you with a knowing smile. “He always shows off when he knows someone important is watching.” she teased.. her eyes twinkling.
You grinned, shaking your head. “I’m pretty sure that’s just Jude being Jude.”
Denise raised an eyebrow. “Oh, believe me, it’s not just anyone who gets him to play like that. He’s always got a little extra when it comes to you.”
Your heart skipped again. You glanced at her, unsure if she meant more by that but before you could ask, there was a collective gasp from the crowd and your attention snapped back to the pitch. Jude had just made an incredible play, weaving through two defenders and setting up a beautiful assist that had the whole stadium roaring.
Denise clapped excitedly, then turned to you with a wide smile. “See what I mean? That was for you.”
You chuckled, trying to play it cool. “I think that was for the team, Denise.”
She laughed too but there was something in her eyes, something that hinted she knew more than she was letting on. She leaned in closer, lowering her voice like she was about to let you in on a secret. “You know, Jude’s always been a bit of a softie. He might act all tough on the field but when it comes to the people he cares about..”
She trailed off, her smile growing a little more mischievous. You waited.. feeling your pulse quicken, wondering what she was about to say.
“Well.. let’s just say he’s not very good at hiding his feelings.” she gave you a meaningful look and for a split second, it seemed like she was about to say something more, something big but she caught herself, shaking her head with a laugh. “I’ve said too much already.”
You blinked, your mind racing. Was she saying what you thought she was saying? Before you could ask, the stadium erupted in cheers again.. Jude had scored this time, a perfect shot from just outside the box. Everyone in the family box jumped to their feet and you found yourself cheering louder than you ever had before.
Denise smiled knowingly at you as the celebration settled down. “He’s going to be so happy you were here to see that.” she said softly.. her voice filled with warmth.
You blushed, looking out onto the pitch where Jude was being swarmed by his teammates. There was something in the way Denise was looking at you, like she knew exactly how her son felt. And maybe, just maybe, she knew how you felt, too.
When the final whistle blew, you found yourself standing beside Denise as she hugged and congratulated the rest of the family. As you prepared to leave, she pulled you aside one more time, her smile soft and motherly.
“I’m so glad I finally got to meet you.” she said quietly. “You’re just as lovely as he said you’d be.”
You opened your mouth to respond but before you could, she added “And trust me, he says a lot about you.”
Your heart swelled at her words and as you left the box, you couldn’t help but wonder just how much Jude had told his mom.. and how soon he might finally tell you.
