I just got an ad for a game where Pedro Pascal is a detective trying to solve a mystery.
And my brain immediately made up a fake scenario where Pedro Pascals detective character is part of the Knives Out universe. So there is this mystery with two opposing / interested parties, who would like the case to be resolved for their own motives. One side hires Benoit Blanc and the other side hires another private investigator (Pedro Pascal!). They are constantly running into each other. But they both try to solve the mystery on their own, because they both would like to be the first one to solve it before the other does so. Funny banter ensues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can someone write this? In my mind, it would be hilarious.
Or is there already fanfiction like this? Does anyone have recs?

When the favorite Sherlock adaptation poll was ongoing this past week, I had a bunch of ideas for other detective related polls I wanted to throw out there and see people's takes on. Now with the Sherlock one wrapped up, here's a new one I'm really curious about!
I'm sure there will be a myriad of other detectives I haven't included on this list, either because I forgot, have never read/watched/played their media, or haven't even heard of it. There's no way I could hope to capture them all, especially without hitting the poll entry limit. If you have one you really love, you can still show love for them in the Other category! And tell us about them in your comments/reblogs. 😄
For the purposes of this poll, I'm keeping this list to characters who work as some sort of private/consulting/civilian detective or investigator, not for the police (Columbo, B99, etc.) or in some other field like medicine (such as House or Maomao.)
Shoutout to Nancy Drew, Sam Spade, Spenser, Phillip Marlowe, the Hardy Boys, Auguste Dupin, Nero Wolfe, the Dead Boy Detectives (still need to watch this), Bodkin, the Only Murders podcaster trio, Detective L, Charlotte Holmes and countless others that I couldn't fit here. Give them some love in the Other category!
As before with the Sherlock poll, feel free to reblog for a larger sample size. :)

What they won’t tell you about Benoit Blanc is that he was actually a theatre major. It was Phillip who was the one with the master’s degree in criminology.
While Benoit was reciting lines as Hamelt in an accent Philllip was so sure was fake, he was writing his thesis on the correlation between sociopathy and serial killers. It was pure chance they ended up stuck together as roommates. Even less so after they graduated and still continued to live together.
Phillip didn’t end up becoming a forensic scientist as planned— turns out you need a strong stomach when handling murder sites, so he settled for a public defender instead. Best in the field if he would say so himself. And while he never really shook off the eccentric yet oddly popular Benoit Blanc from his side, before he knew it, he was his closest friend.
Perhaps it was the long hours spent together in the common room as they silently focused on what was possibly their hundredth game of chess, the bonding over their love of Agatha Christie and whodunit movies, the bickering over who used up all the hot water; but at some point, they grew fond of each other’s company.
Neither was sure at what point they “defined the relationship.” Phillip is under the impression that it was when Blanc took him out to eat for the first time on Valentine’s day, while Blanc believes it was earlier, when Phillip got into a motorcycle accident and the hospital called him as his emergency contact. The point is, both are unable to recall a time when they weren’t together.
Perhaps Blanc owed his pursuit as a private investigator to Phillip. After all, it was his constant nitpicking at every mystery novel he read that allowed him to discover that crime-solving scratched that particular itch for adventure. And it was Blanc who helped Phillip realize he preferred helping out the underdog rather than focus on the who committed what. In the end, they wouldn’t have found where they are today if it weren’t for each other.

If You Like Benoit Blanc...
Ever since Glass Onion came out, it seems like everyone’s obsessed with Benoit Blanc and these types of mysteries! Which is great; as someone who loves them, I’m thrilled to have more people interested in the genre. So, if you’re looking for more murder mystery stuff, might I offer some recommendations?
Hercule Poirot
Tumblr media
Agatha Christie’s delightful Belgian detective might be the most similar to Blanc of any of the big detectives out there. And with countless novels, short stories, the tv show, and the recent movies, there’s plenty of Poirot content out there for you to enjoy! I personally recommend buying a collection of the short stories and starting from there, but really, there’s no wrong way to get into one of the world’s most famous detectives!
(Note: Agatha Christie was a wealthy British woman who began being published in the 1920′s, and this shows in some of her stories. Most of what I’ve read I’d construe as not meaning badly but definitely of the times, but it’s worth noting!)
Columbo
Tumblr media
If you like the parts of Glass Onion where Blanc plays up the old fashioned, Southern charm and acts like a simpleton, Columbo is the detective for you. The whole conceit of this show is that we actually know whodunnit and the question is how is Columbo going to figure it out. Usually the answer is looking shabby, rambling, talking about his wife, and trapping people in their own lies. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch, and Columbo himself is very memeable.
Murder, She Wrote
Tumblr media
The late, great Dame Angela Lansbury and her hit show Murder, She Wrote have actually been referenced in both Knives Out movies and it’s no wonder why. Jessica Fletcher is an acclaimed murder mystery author who uses her keen observation skills, knowledge from researching her books, and grandmotherly demeanor to solve murder mysteries. It’s a delightful show filled with tons of guest stars you’re bound to recognize, and J.B. Fletcher really is one of the great fictional detectives.
Pushing Daisies
Tumblr media
Okay, admittedly I’m mostly including this one because I think everyone should watch Pushing Daisies at some point. It’s part murder mystery, part romcom, part musical, part absurdist comedy with an absolutely enchanting style. Our leads are a piemaker with necromantic powers, a dead girl walking, a jockey turned waitress, a private investigator who also knits and writes pop-up books, and two retired mermaid entertainers. It’s whimsical and wild in all the best ways while still having really creative, engaging mysteries.
There are so many incredible, unique murder mysteries out there- the genre really spans so many wonderful stories. These are just a few that I think are really fun and fans of Beniot Blanc will enjoy! For my fellow murder mystery fans, I’d love to hear what you’d recommend to folks just starting to get familiar with the genre as well!

we learn so little details about benoit blanc's history or personal life that that little moment in knives out 1 fascinates me... let's look at it.
marta: did you know harlan?
blanc: he knew my father who was a police detective. years ago. my father respected harlan. that says quite a lot.
1. we learn that blanc's father was a police detective years ago, which means that
2. blanc is partially following in his father's footsteps, becoming a detective of sorts himself
3. blanc's father respected harlan and "that says quite a lot"- which i take to mean, it was respect not easily earned. blanc sr. gave his respect to people he deemed good enough, worthy enough.
now i'm just thinking and extrapolating, but from this wording and tone, i gather that blanc's father is dead. and i wonder if we'll find out in future movies whether that's true, and if blanc's father lived to see blanc become a famous private investigator, was he proud of him? did he respect his son? (unrelated but kind of related: did he know his son is gay?)
it's also a fascinating moment, in a movie partially about a family's relationship to a father figure, to have blanc briefly mention following in his father's footsteps. in baiting linda to talk about how she truly feels about the other members of the family, blanc says:
"...as a self-made man myself i have to express my admiration for how you've followed in your father's footsteps. ...just marvelous. the whole family too. joni with her things, walt with his publishing empire."
this movie has a subtle nod to legacy. what do we want to leave behind? who do we want our children to become? how will we care for future generations? harlan cuts his family off to force them to become "self-made" and self-sufficient. then there is blanc: if we take him at his word (and don't presume he's lying to bait joni), he is a self-made man.
we can only guess at how he feels about his father and his original motivations for his career choice, but it makes sense that blanc would want to become an investigator because of his father. it makes me wonder- did he try to be a police detective first or did he go a different way from the start? (i personally get from the "self-made" vibe that he's always been a private investigator, but that's just imo.) what guided his ethos in choosing clients, honoring his father or unlearning his father's worldview?
there's no real end to this post i'm just fascinated by benoit blanc as a character, partially because we know so little about his personal life. he's a man of mystery, he's gay, he's either a daddy's boy or has daddy issues, he's a fashion icon, he's a feminist, and he's my best friend ❤️

Glass Onion is just so... love the murder mystery, love the thriller, love the subverted Bond movie elements. They all slot into each other really well; thankfully the Bond references never turn into pastiche or parody that might take over the whole thing. I want to talk about some of them though because I'm a nerd.
Spoilers under the cut!
Like, the obvious references are Whiskey's dramatic Beauty Emerging From The Water moment -- beautiful stuff. Shot like a Bond. Cut to Benoit (Daniel Craig here finally getting his own back for those blasted swimming trunks in Casino Royale) standing in the pool in his whole entire outfit, complete with a yellow dotted necktie, holding his drink and looking like a grumpy cat. Like he might speak to someone firmly.
The obvious stuff is the Evil Genius On Private Island plot -- a staple of the spy/Bond genre, and here they are. Curd Jürgens would be so proud. BUT. This guy is not a genius. This guy is a dimwitted jackass. He's dangerous because he's a moron and obsessed with his own image, not because he can actually plot a murder worth a damn.
Another, more subtle nod is that Bond stories do often begin with a murder mystery of sorts: someone got killed (usually another agent) and Bond has to go find out who did it. It's just that that stuff gets swallowed up by the world-saving pretty quickly; aside from that Bond is actually a decent detective.
Now, my favourite bit of kit was Blanc's awe at Miles' car. That beautiful, sleek, absolutely Bond-worthy car. It's a Porsche 918 Spyder, and as far as I know a Porsche 918 hasn't been used in any Bond film, but it could have been. So when Blanc stares at it and goes, "Is that a motorcar??" like he's never seen one in real life? It's such a tongue-in-cheek moment.
And when that car comes crashing through the ceiling, fully on fire, at the end? Blanc's not even there to see it, and I couldn't help but think of Skyfall and the sheer disdain on Bond's face when Silva blows up his beloved Aston Martin. And in Glass Onion, he couldn't give less of a shit. It's beautiful.
Aside from these little things, Glass Onion is a wonderfully crafted closed-circuit murder mystery (my favourite). It's also an excellent piece of thriller when it comes to Andi and Helen's story -- Janelle Monáe needs to receive all of the awards for their performance. What an absolute powerhouse; they carried that part of the investigation and the film.

Glass Onion’s murder mystery game
Tumblr media
Obsessed with Miles Bron in Glass Onion choosing a murder mystery game as the entertainment for his private weekend getaway with his closest friends. An activity to provide structure to what would otherwise be 3 days lazing about on a Greek isle with his “friends.” A game that requires an intensive weekend of solo investigation and observation and puzzle-solving…which Miles himself will not have to participate in.
Miles has assigned his “friends” homework for their weekend holiday. And their assigned task is to labor and compete to impress him by solving a mystery. It’s no coincidence that the mystery game compels his friends to work separately. He has isolated his friends so that he can remain their individual focus. Note that Miles hasn’t bothered to come up with an actual prize for the winner…because to his mind, the ultimate prize is Miles’s respect. He’s flummoxed and insulted when Benoit Blanc requests a physical reward—and something as comparably worthless as an iPad.
So of course Miles’s friends are relieved when Benoit Blanc blows up the game. Because it means the pressure to perform is off. The pressure to provide the entertainment for Miles, because make no mistake, they’ve been invited to the island to entertain Miles and keep him happy. Honestly, ever since they took his side in the trial, that invitation has become a summons. Can you imagine any of them declining his invitation? It’s a luxury vacation, sure…but it’s also a summons to perform a jester’s dance before King Miles, who can easily destroy them if they fail to show their gratitude/fealty.
Miles’s response to the game ending early is to ask, horrified, “What am I supposed to do now? Play Yahtzee all weekend?” Heaven forbid he enjoy spending unstructured time with his closest friends in the lap of luxury! But to a narcissist like Miles Bron, any moment when the attention isn’t on him must be Hell. And that’s why his murder mystery game was the perfect plan to make his friends compete for his approval, while he sat back and enjoyed the show.

* ◟ : 〔 MICHIEL HUISMAN , CIS MAN + HE /HIM 〕 COEN HUMMEL , some say you’re a FORTY-TWO YEAR OLD lost soul among the neon lights. known for being both ASTUTE and UNFORGIVING, one can’t help but think of PERFECT (EXCEEDER) by MASON VS PRINCESS SUPERSTAR when you walk by. are you still a DEFECTIVE ASSASSIN / PRIVATE DETECTIVE at RED EYE, even with your reputation as the THE SCORNED? i think we’ll be seeing more of you and NIGHT TERRORS BLEEDING INTO REALITY BLEEDING INTO DEVOTION, LOVE IS A FEAST BUT YOU'VE LEARNED TO ABSTAIN, THE SEATS ARE EMPTY AND THE THEATRE IS DARK - WHY DO YOU KEEP ACTING?, although we can’t help but think of CANE (JOHN WICK 4), LADYBUG (BULLET TRAIN), BENOIT BLANC (KNIVES OUT) whenever we see you down these rainy streets.
ENTER THE SCORNED .
You show face beneath the neon splatter with a wide grin and lazy posture. A black glove adorns each hand — a staple piece at any given time and day. An atmosphere of liveliness clings like a third skin. The second being who you present yourself as currently to the naked eye. And the first still shrouded in a fog of oil-slick mystery. But no matter, you're here! A little-lot worse for wear, but alive no less! Despite all the trails and tribulations you've slogged through, your heart still beats and your lungs still take in air. But whether that stays the case for long.. Well, we'll just have to see what the cards fate will deal.
PUBLICLY KNOWN FACTS:
Name: Coen Hummel
Appearance: Two sides of the same coin. From scraggly, roughed up investigator to a regular joe that's just trying to get around. Coen's capable of dressing to the nines if a situation calls for it. But if he's being honest, there's far more comfort in wearing in the basics. He can stand tall, but prefers to slouch. Will always be wearing black gloves. Has the full facial hair set that's usually taken care of quite meticulously.
Background: Single child raised in the Midwest. Run-of-the-mill childhood in a steady household. Fortunate enough to discover a deeply founded passion early on, though it's led him down a narrow path in life. Never got married, but certainly had a child. Was dealt the misfortune of never being able to watch his son grow as an adult. Both his then partner and child were tragically taken in a hit and run. Grief has walked with him ever since. Even as he sorts himself out. Quits relying on booze to numb everything, keeps an eye on what he eats. An ache stays as a callous in his soul despite his sunny ( if not a little crazy ) disposition.
Is anosmatic ( i.e. unable to smell / has impacted taste ), but never lets it stop him from being a foodie. Note — he is known to purposely partake in the weirdest combinations known to mankind.
Will always make up a different reason for why he wears gloves all the time. Yes, they're all very stupid.
Is completely blind in the left eye, but has several prosthetics. Refuses any help concerning advanced technology to restore sight.
Has a dog named Boatmeal. Endearingly nicknames him Bo. Certified emotional support dog & scent training.
WHAT'S BURIED UNDERNEATH .
Birth name: Boudewijin Bekker
Cause for gloves: ** tw: self-mutilation start** The back of his hands had been marked with something related to Stoneage Industries growing up. Once he defected, he couldn't stand the sight of them. He depersonalized extremely bad and severed the skin off the back of his hands, got some skin grafts smacked on, and now has some really gross scars. Hence, the gloves. **tw: self-mutilation end**
HISTORY HIS HEART KNOWS ( PRIVATE ) .
Growing up with a single father is hard; even harder, still, when said father was half drowned in debt. Boudewijin was forced to grow up faster than his peers. He had to be scrappy and figured out ways to help his father wherever he could. Admittedly, his father wasn’t a perfect person or parent; most of the time he numbed their shitty situation with the promise of liquor. And, yes, there were times where he was a little heavy handed with him if he did something foolish, but they both loved each other all the same.
Nothing could have prepared Boudewijin when his father fell ill. They couldn’t afford the treatment required, and he had to stand witness to the slow decline of his father’s health. The man went from being a sizable man to bone thin in the matter of months. And one day Boudewijin didn’t see him at all. At the time, he’d thought that his father was working overtime – that he’d be back home later or sometime during the night. Then one day became two, and then two became three… Worried, he called everyone that knew his father, but his answer wasn’t brought to light until the police arrived at his doorstep by the fourth night.
**tw: suicide start**
Suicide, they had said. The evidence was clear with the note left in the passenger seat, and the pistol gripped in his father’s hand. Boudewijin was barely at ten the time. And the only damning grace is the organization that plucked him from the system.
**tw: suicide end**
HISTORY AS HE KNOWS IT ( IN STONEAGE RECORDS ) .
It's believed that Boudewijin would succeed. No, he might not have been the strongest or most agile, but there was undeniable grit. The refusal to give up and stay down. Wherever he was sent to, whatever task he was given to complete. He always came shambling back in pieces, hardly breathing but still very much alive. It wasn't until his early thirties did things flip.
What should have been an unlikely but harmless friendship grew into something more. Something far more steadfast than allowed. He tried to keep it casual. Tried to make it clear that they'd never work under his then alias and fake background. But she was just as stubborn as him, and after some time they were gifted with the absolute apple of their eyes — their son, Morgan.
Life was bearable then — just for a short year, at least. Boudewijin thought he took all the right measures to keep them safe and out of Stoneage's view. But he should've known better. It was the exact same blind faith that brought him misfortune in the worst of ways. Someone caught wind and sparked a wildfire to regain control. Snip any thought of freedom in the bud before there's even a whisper of rebellion.
His partner and son disappeared into thin air. The only warning he got was that they knew. None of the details were spared. Didn't have to be when Boudewijin knew it was a test of fidelity, but that didn’t staunch the outrage. Naturally, he bent to their will — hoping, praying that they were safe and left alone. But no news ever came of their fate. No matter how long he waited.. and waited.. and waited.
They were never seen or heard from again.
Something snapped, then. Deep seated hatred accelerated its roots and consumed him, but again — he was no fool. A one man riot would’ve been a suicide mission. So he waited once more. This time with his ears strained to catch wind of the perfect time and escape.
Boudewijin put forth his all when the plan went into effect. If the unkindly grace of fate wanted to have him drop dead then so be it. There was hardly any worth to his life. Yet he somehow survived those sent after him; not without significant bodily damage but still very much alive and kicking.
HISTORY BEING WRITTEN ( THE BEGINNING OF 'DEAR DIARIES' ).
Normalcy never fully settles back his life, as his days will forever be plagued with unrest. The pristine visage he once carried so proudly diminished into a mere husk of vanity. Somehow, by some miracle, he retained enough of a drive to change things up. Leave behind who he once was — who he'd become — and start anew as Coen Hummel, a man that's barely skirting by life. Although he might be with a new identity, he knows better this time. Keeps a close eye on those around him. Pays extra attention to what might lurk around every corner and shadow. Waits patiently but prepared for those still looking for him.

Tumblr media
Two teens are sitting in the carpet, watching YouTube videos on a phone, they pause it and look up judgementally.
"As a former teen, I understand the appeal of sitting on the floor instead of couches, but as a back-pain-prone creaky-knees adult, I no longer share these views"
"Are you two the couple having gay sex on the second floor?"
"When will I ever be free from the consequences of my actions"
Tumblr media
"Nope, wrong person, we are the gay detective couple that were investigating the second floor"
"Oh, cops"
"Private detectives"
"Yeah, man, there's no gay cops"
"That makes more sense"
"Anyways! We need you guys to go to -"
"Actually, there is something else."
Tumblr media
"There is?"
"Are you two Simon Coli and Owen by any chance"
"Uh, yeah? I'm Owen"
"I'm Simon"
"Do you happen to know anything about Mr. Coli's speedrunning incident ?"
They look at each other
"... Not really"
"Yeah! It was something about an anonymous link to a video of him doing a weird tour, right? We just read the news about it"
"I see"
"Another quick question"
Tumblr media
"Are you lying to me?"
They freeze up
"Ah, I mightve been a little too intense there. Whoops"
"... Care to share your thought process, partner?"
"Oh! This is the part where the main detective says their hypothesis! What would Benoit Blanc do? Ah, yes! Slight undressing!"
Tumblr media
"You're right Owen, it was an anonymous link sent to a reporter. It is interesting that you remember that specific detail.
You see, Mr Coli is known for being a man who cares a lot about his public image, it is weird that he would willingly put a video proving him guilty of multiple crimes and being put as a speedrun for a game, it's a bit silly isn't it?"
"And sure, maybe he just did it on a whim, maybe to just be funny or something"
"But wouldn't it make more sense
That it wasn't him who made and uploaded the video?"
Tumblr media
"Ah, signs of anxiety, how familiar I am with them.
Still, as much as I think I'm right, this hypothesis doesn't have much to stand on, This just feels like something someone younger would do. Maybe if I apply a bit of pressure to them, they'll say something? I don't want to be mean to kids, though..."
Tumblr media
"Partner. Partner help. Understand my telepathic message Ángel!"
"Owen, by any chance, you don't happen to know the speedrunning account Eugene happened to use when he was younger, right? Is not like he showed you it or anything.
And Mr. Little Coli, I suppose Eugene was never interested in telling you about his company or factories or anything. That would be crazy!"
Tumblr media
"What. Where did he get that from. Did he talk to them before?
And he's not even undressing!"
"Ah, it would also be very convenient if they knew someone who owned a lot of cameras"
An anxious atmosphere hangs over the room
"Um, we are not trying to arrest you or anything!! I think it was very , uh, poggers? If you exposed him like that?"
"... Never say poggers again."
"Duly noted"
"Let me be honest, we think your dad invited us here to kill us all. And we need to know the truth of the speedrunning incident to finally figure out what he is planning exactly"
"Wha... We're going to die?!"
"Ah, don't worry! We are taking care of it! Look! I haven't died yet!"
Ángel makes a weird expression
"Let me get to the point. I think you guys made the video without him knowing.
Tumblr media
The fact that it was recorded as some kind of tour, replacing the sound of voices, and that it would be unlike Mr. Coli to set himself up like that makes me think it was some type of secret recording
And what Ángel said would fit really well to this theory, too.
There is no motive to the speedrun because it was never supposed to be a speedrun.
So please tell us, we need to know what it is that actually happened"
"Our lives could be at risk"
"... You won't snitch to the police or anything?"
"The only thing I've ever told the police is 'I request a lawyer' "
The teens look at eachother
" ...Um, it was the three of us actually"

Obviously im gonna have opinions on detective fiction jokes and i have to get them out. Mostly i approve of that post and love the dig at lord peter wimsey fuck peter wimsey. And nancy drew in the cove made me sentimental kid detectives were always ending up in coves. The columbo one felt especially perfect.
But 1) miss marple wasnt That deferential and the idea that she couldnt investigate people she respected and felt deep compassion for is crazy when her discretion and sensitivity were basic calling cards also writing her off when shes the only non nancy female representation in the tweet is offensive. 2) nothing is philip marlowes problem ever he was always hired he was never personally motivated and moreso than others he was often hired by morally dubious people. He is basically the perfect private eye for the british royals. 3) i am so mad at benoit blanc being included in lists of iconic fictional detectives, many of whom had decades spanning careers and multiple authors. He has solved two cases. He is nothing

My thoughts on cops in Drawtectives
The Drawtectives have a whole weird relationship to cops and honestly it’s very inconsistent. This is common for detective stories so I wanted to think about it more.
Warning for spoilers for both seasons and the one shot
The Drawtectives themselves
Are the Drawtectives cops? If I were to classify them, they're only like cops in the way that a Superhero is, where they effectively act as law enforcement but with morals. They’re not real private investigators, they’re fictional, and can thus be like how they are. The Drawtectives would never go after anyone who didn’t "deserve it." However you define that.
However, they’re still a form of law enforcement and I believe I would be remiss if I didn’t say that they are still putting people into prison. They’re still putting "bad" people into the hands of actual full on cops, so they’re entirely complicit in the process. This is quite common in detective stories. We love Benoit Blanc but he still is in leagues with cops so y’know in real life how good could he possibly be.
The B Team
Okay so S1 starts off with a sympathetic character as a cop. Flem Mucowsy was only added to be a front door guard but it’s still an odd thing to start the group of cops we meet with a sympathetic / pathetic guy who’s so sick he can’t even do his job correctly.
This is contrasted immediately by an overly serious Inna Urfass. She is the only competent cop we really meet in the entire season, gathering evidence, putting people into individual rooms, acting as security for the entire building. She gets close to copaganda. Especially since the fact that she is stated to be the only competent person on her team, it sort of portrays her in a sympathetic light, that she is smart and everyone around her is holding her back because she "Does her job" (paraphrasing).
Pierce Steel is an absolute idiot and so is still Bogan, but during interactions with Pierce Steel we do know that Jancy used to work with him often and even had him declared innocent for a crime he didn’t commit. This reflects quite well on Jancy, as she absolutely ensures that the innocent are not punished, although of course it doesn't question the system itself. Pierce doesn’t either cause that’s what made him want to be a cop? For some reason? Pierce is a weird character in this regard.
Imagine a bunch of unequivocal idiots being the ones to decide who gets arrested and put into the process of the justice system and who gets to walk free… oh wait.
Paladins
Well, first of all, what even is a paladin? Sorin stops corruption and worker mistreatment but he still arrested Sam Ug, so Paladins seem to be different but very similar to cops where they arrest and investigate suspects. I don’t really know what makes Sorin as a paladin captain different from Pierce Steel. Sorin is a bastard too even if he was a socialist cop, however the hell that works.
The A Team
The A Team is like actual copaganda I think. A bunch of cool cops who know what they’re doing and do cool flips and shit while coming to take down the bad guy is such a stereotypically positive view of cops. It’s such a weird contrast with the entirety of the other cops in the series. Every single other one is either an idiot, comically serious, or Sorin who’s dead and also a socialist who hates corporations. They fully just do not fit in.
The One Shot
The one shot is when the Drawtectives literally interrogate witnesses with the help of cops arresting people. It is so out of character for the Drawtectives to be interrogating people honestly. Which by the way they should not be able to do legally unless they are actual cops so I don’t know what’s going on with Fancy Town’s policing system.
The real odd bit is Norm. Norm is a cop and is kind of just treated like a run of the mill guy. Harper is treated as unreasonable to freak out about the cop who arrested you walking towards you but tbh I get incredibly uncomfortable with law enforcement officers generally despite never having been arrested. I couldn’t imagine if you see the literal officer who once arrested you walking towards you in the park. Idk Norm is such a weird character and while I like his personality, the fact that he’s a cop is such an odd wrinkle in his whole thing that I can’t like him.
Also I mean hey at least the police aren’t afraid of treating other cops like suspects? That’s a positive.
Season 2
It has no cops. Not a one. Closest we get is Felix but he just thinks he's sending people home so, not really a cop.
Leland is arrested by cops with Jancy having called them but that’s kind of just the same issue as above with Jancy working with cops in general.

A new, albeit stupid, mystery to solve in Greece. A fancy, overly expensive-looking private island owned by a vainglorious billionaire. A scorned, undercover woman determined to exact her revenge. These are all captivating reasons why Benoit Blanc should be focusing on his present case as he waits for the police to arrive on the midnight Greek coast, but it’s not that simple when his recent release from quarantine has given him a lot to think about. While patiently waiting, he re-examines previous cases, and one of them - a case that had brought him to chilly Masachusetts to investigate the suicide of an elderly multi-millionaire mystery novelist - brings back the memory of a quietly defiant woman who enraptured him.
It’s wrong, he has a husband to go back to, but when blood is already rushing south, he knows what to do to make her memory feel good again.
