Have you ever come upon several butterflies gathered together on a gravel bar in Quantico Creek? These Eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies are participating in what is sometimes known as "puddling!" Puddling occurs when male butterflies gather together in a damp area to drink water that contains salts and other minerals that have leached in from the surrounding soils. An amazing site to see, keep an eye out for these groups of butterflies next time you're hiking in a wet area in the early morning!
