Why Callum Blue?

The Prince Is BACK, Baby!

Recently ABC posted a picture of Callum Blue, the actor who played Brad Torrence in 9-1-1.

The picture is a mashed up of Callum's recent role as Brad Torrence, and his most famous role as Prince Andrew Jacoby in Princess Diaries 2 (2004).

What's the intention behind this post? Currently, the show is in hiatus. Isn't it better to post a picture of a main cast instead of a guest star?

The most logical answer is because Brad Torrence would be back in Season 8B. This post could be a warming up the fans, especially the Millenial & Gen X female fans. It's a throwback to past, when they were teenagers and young adults, who watched Princess Diary movies, and swooned over the two dashing royals in the 2nd movie of the franchise.

Another possibility is ABC used this post as a litmus test. Callum Blue is one of many celebrities who were linked to NXIVM, an infamous sex cult which used highly influential people to give legitimacy to the cult. Former member, India Oxenberg, recalled seeing high-profile celebrities, like Jennifer Aniston and Rosario Dawson, at introductory Executive Success Program (ESP) meetings.

Callum Blue found himself turning to the organization in 2011, after a personal tragedy. “At the height of my popularity, I went through some trauma. My father took his own life and I continued working and I was caught up in this spiral of chaos ‘cause Hollywood can be a chaotic and noisy place. And that really opened me up to looking to the outside world to find the answers,” he said in an interview with E! True Hollywood Story. 

In part, the search led him to several NXIVM workshops, billed then as "Executive Success Programs" (ESPs) meant to help its pupils realize the scope of their personal potential in varying capacities. However, put off by Keith Raniere, the cult leader, and his experience, Callum quickly left NXIVM. “I was in it for five days and I heard the same thing again and again and again,” he recalled. 

Yet, Callum's career seemed to be affected by the scandal. He was barely in any movies and TV shows after his name was linked to the cult. The fact that he used to follow several right-wing sympathizers on Instagram also didn't help his image. Although he quickly unfollowed those people when someone pointed that out to him.

9-1-1 might get a good bargain when hiring Callum for 6 episodes in Season 8A. He's a good actor, as proven by his performance on the show, notably on his heart-to-heart conversation with Eddie Diaz about their respective sons. He also probably still has a loyal fan base from his previous works.

If the show uses social media engagement as a measurement, hiring Callum Blue was the right move. Number of comments which praised Brad Torrence/Callum Blue was high, partly because a lot of Buddie stans also praised Callum's performance to drown the cries for Tommy's return/Bucktommy's reunion.

Still, ABC might want to do another litmus test by posting Callum's picture in the middle of hiatus. Last time I checked, the post got 41.7 likes and 858 comments. It is significantly higher than 100+ to 300+ comments on ordinary 9-1-1 posts. Most importantly: it seems that none of the comment mention his connection to NXIVM.

Fans who plan to watch Season 8B might see Brad Torrence again. They could thank some of the Buddie fans for their contribution in bringing Brad Torrence back.
