We have taken in another New Guinea Singing Dog. His first home asked me to do this for her so I went to meet the lady who was rehoming him in Louisville last night. I discussed with his first owner about his name. We want him to keep his first name he had which is Koga. It is a Japanese name meaning 'old river'; variously written, with one ancient variant of imperial descent pronounced Kuga. But our other male is Kovu so because they sound similar we have chosen a middle name together with the help of the awesome followers we have on Facebook. We are using the #maori name Taine as his middle name and what we will call him at home. The meaning of the name “Taine” is: “God of the forests”. Which is very fitting for a Singing Dog; dog spelled backwards is god. Koga Taine sang the song of his people at the @indyirishfest today. He and Toa Jean had so much fun just spending time with us. I always love going to Irish festival and being able to share that love with these special animals is all I could ask for. Last night Toa tried to give Kovu toys while he was in his crate. So I gave him the two toys she was giving him last night. He has his vet appointment Saturday so we can make sure he has a clean bill of health before allowing him to play with the others. @starbucks sells a coffee from Papua New Guinea, maybe they will help us and @jabcecc raise awareness for New Guinea Singing Dogs and our non profits! With only 250 of these beautiful creatures in captivity and it is unknown if they still exist in the wild as they haven’t been seen in quite some time. Pickle Rick is available for adoption! He’s a Thai Ridgeback Dog which is a primitive breed. Rick is 4 years old, Neutered/Microchipped/Vaccinated. He came to us as a cruelty confiscation with two of his sons. He must be the only pet and it’s not recommended that he be around children due to this breeds high prey drive and strength. Primitive breed experience is preferred. He’s an extremely strong dog so he needs a strong and dedicated handler. Must have secure enclosure for a dog like this as he tested our fences by running at them head first then by pulling on the bars. We use 10 gauge 2 in x 4 in welded steel wire horse panels, 12 gauge 2 in x 4 in welded steel wire bail for top and bottom of the enclosures. We use the wire on top and bottom as primitive dogs are escape artists. So we do require that or dig guards and lean ins on a 6ft or taller fence.
