Maybe something jaylos centered with previous harlos, where Carlos and the other original VKs react badly to Uma, Harry, and Gil being brought to Auradon?? Thank you
anonymous asked: Hi love. Im totally into crazy ex boyfriend Harry. Could you please write J/C fic when they are together and Jay comes back to they room after really bad day and C is incredible scared that J cod hit him of something lime that. J of course is trying his bestâŠ. panic attack? Past abuse/hurt/comfort
i got a lot of prompts and not a lot of time, so these two prompts are going together!! thank yâall
possible triggers: past emotional/physical abuse, panic attacks (all under the cut)
The car is set to arrive any minute now. Jay looks at his watch and sighs. He told Ben time and time again that this was a bad idea, and Ben didnât listen. But itâs Jay who has to face these assholes every day.
Next to him, Mal and Evie clutch each other. He can tell that Evie is shaking, and Mal is intentionally holding her face very still. Carlos is nowhere to be seen. Ben stands straight and tall at the front of the line, taking deep breaths. He seems scared, at least, just like everyone else. In the distance, they can see the bridge forming to bring the car to them. Every Villain Kid has been brought off of the Isle and filtered into school - Dizzy and Anthony, Freddie, Maddie. He can see the car now, speedily approaching. Every Villain Kid but three.
The car slows to a stop in front of them, the brakes squeaking just a little bit. The doors open and slowly, one high-heeled boot comes down to rest on the ground. Uma exits, gracefully and beautifully as ever, looking all too smug to be there. Gil is next, jumping out with far more zest than anyone who tried to kill Carlos should be able to muster.
Then, finally, a hook slowly extends from the car, and then slides along the paint and metal, making a terribly ugly screeching noise. A scratch appears along the paint in its wake, and beside him, Evie grimaces. Harry Hook steps out into the sun and grins at them all. Jay does his best to hold himself back.
âGood morning,â the Fairy Godmother says formally. This time, thereâs no band or confetti. Just Ben, the Fairy Godmother, Mal, Evie, and Jay. Carlos was invited as well, but wasnât in the room when Jay woke up this morning. He spent the entire morning searching for him, but was still fruitless by the time he had to be at the welcoming ceremony. âWelcome, all of you, to Auradon. Itâs a pleasure to have you here.â
None of the three are looking at her, though. Uma keeps her eyes trained on Mal, looking both angry and smarmy; Gil looks at all of them, grinning like he doesnât have a care in the world; and Harry has been making menacing eye contact with Jay the entire time, sizing him up. Jay stares back.
âThe pleasure is all ours,â Uma purrs. Her eyes are still on Mal. âWe thought youâd forgotten about us.â
Jay huffs. âHow could we?â he mutters. Ben shoots him a look that he ignores.
âIt was getting pretty lonely on the island,â Gil says candidly, as he is always pretty candid. âNo one to bully, boss around, b -â
âGil,â Uma cuts in, looking at him sharply. âEnough.â
Meanwhile, Harry takes a few steps closer. âWell, well, well,â he murmurs. âIf it isnât Jay Sultana. But, you seem to beâŠâ He trails off, and glances to Jayâs left - a spot reserved for Carlos, left unfilled. â⊠missing something.â
Jay sneers. âBack off, Hook,â he says. âOr Iâll hit you so hard that crocodiles wonât look so bad in comparison.â
Harry raises an eyebrow and lifts his hook, just so it rests under Jayâs chin. He grins. âSay âhiâ to your boyfriend for me.â
With that, Ben steps in, pushing them apart. âEnough,â he says forcefully. They both take a step back, but never break eye contact. âHarry, you were brought here for a second chance. Donât lose it before you have the chance to use it.â
Finally, Harry looks away from Jay down to Benâs hands, still firmly on both of their chests. âDemanding,â Harry purrs, and Ben snatches his hand away. âI like a man who knows what he wants. Like ole Jay, I suppose.â He looks up at Jay again and leans forward. âOh, yes. I know what he wants though, donât I?â
Before he can say anything, Uma reaches forward and pulls on Harryâs arm. âHarry,â she hisses. âItâs our first day.â Ben nods in agreement.
The Fairy Godmother, who seemed shocked into silence, speaks up. âWell, um, welcome again,â she says. âPlease, allow our guardsmen to show you to your rooms.â Uma nods and, with one last look at Evie, Mal, and Jay, follows the guards along with her cronies. Harry shoots a look back over his shoulder at Jay and waggles his hook gleefully.
âI have never had a worse two minutes in my entire life,â Evie murmurs. Jay canât help but agree.
â
When he comes back to the room, heâs pretty frustrated. Not only did Harry really get under his skin, but Carlos still isnât around. Jay feels kind of conflicted - on the one hand, he feels like Carlos should have been there for the other VKs, just like they were there for each other. On the other, when Ben announced the last three would be brought over, he wasnât complaining like Jay, or angry like Mal, or visibly upset like Evie. He just sat there, quietly, and⊠accepted it.
Jay slams the door behind him, and shakes his head. âCarlos?â he calls out. âYou here?â Thereâs no response, just the quiet rustling of trees in the wind. He sighs and shakes his head, then, in that moment, hears something else. He strains his ears and moves towards it. Itâs coming from their shared bathroom.
He moves across the room and puts his ear to the door. Itâs clearly crying, but not loud sobbing or for attention. Just quiet weeping. Jay knocks on the door. âCarlos?â he calls again. The crying gets just a little louder. âCan I come in, please?â
Thereâs a long pause and then, finally, an answer. âYeah, just⊠be careful.â
Slowly, Jay pushes open the door. Carlos is sitting slumped inside the tub, fully-clothed, looking every bit like he just crumpled there. Tear tracks run down his face, and his arms are crossed over his chest as if heâs protecting himself. Dude is in the tub with him, looking up at Jay with hard eyes, like heâs suspicious of him. âCarlos,â Jay murmurs, and moves to walk towards him. Carlos flinches, and Jay stops dead in his tracks. âAre⊠are you okay?â
Carlos swallows. âUh⊠today hasnât been the easiest on me,â he says, sniffling. He looks like heâs been keeping this to himself for a while, preparing what to say for when the time came where he had to say it. âI just needed some time.â
âTo sit in a bathtub and cry,â Jay says slowly. Carlos just shrugs. âOkay. Well, can I do something?â
âNo,â Carlos answers immediately. âItâs fine. Iâm fine.â
Jay frowns and reaches out, saying, âBabeâŠâ
Carlos flinches again, moving as far back in the tub as he can. âGod, please donât,â he says, seemingly involuntarily, and more tears spill down his face. Jay wants to climb into the tub and hold him, but he isnât sure how much help that would really be right now, seeing as Carlos flinches any time he even moves.
Painfully slowly, he lifts his hands. Carlos doesnât flinch this time. âIâm not coming any closer,â he says. âI promise. Got it?â Carlos nods, looking miserable. âCan you tell me whatâs wrong?â
âI, uhâŠâ Carlos shakes his head. âI know that⊠not everybody did a lot of dating on the Isle.â Jay nods. Itâs why they didnât get together until a few months ago - the Isle was more of a hotbed for gang activity than anything else. âBut I did, for a while.â
Jay raises an eyebrow. âOkay,â he says. He doesnât feel jealousy or anything, thankfully, because he doesnât think he can deal with Carlosâs heightened emotions and his own right now. âCan I ask who?â
âUh, Harry.â
Thereâs the swell of emotions. Thankfully, still no jealousy like he might once have felt. Mostly just anger and pain. Because almost instantly, he understands. He knows why Carlos has been so closed off lately, and why he didnât come to the Welcome Ceremony, and why he was so afraid when they went to save Ben from the Isle. âOh,â Jay says softly, because thatâs all there is. He lets his hands drop.
Carlos is concentrating on Dude now, petting him between the ears, determined not to look Jay in the eyes. âAnd he wasnât⊠good to me,â he continues. âWe were only kids, like fourteen or fifteen, and he didnât like me being with you, and Mal, and Evie. So heâd, uhâŠâ Carlos swallows. âLetâs just say Iâm glad not to be with him anymore.â
Thereâs a long pause, deafening silence in which Jay just looks at Carlos. Then he canât hold it in anymore - he asks, âDid he hurt you?â
Carlos just nods.
Jay feels sick. He feels, quite literally, revolted by what heâs just heard. Not only is he upset that anyone hurt Carlos, but it wasnât like they were strangers back then - they were friends, back on the Isle. They hung out daily. And he never knew. He also feels a surge of over-protectiveness, once again wanting to climb into the bathtub and hold Carlos so close that it becomes just the two of them, the rest of the world fading away. And finally, he just wants to leave the room, find Harry Hook, and skin him alive.
But he doesnât. He stays where he is, because Carlos needs him. This isnât about Jay, this is about Carlos. Carlos, whoâs still crying, so hard now that heâs started hiccuping, and holding Dude close to him. Jay puts his hands in his pockets. âWhat can I do?â he asks, because heâs not sure. Should he tell Ben and demand Harry be deported? Should he tell Harry to never come near his boyfriend again? Should he do nothing?
Carlos sniffles again and looks up at him. His big, brown eyes are glassy and wet, and Jay balls his hand into a fist. âJust⊠come sit with me,â Carlos says. âPlease.â
Jay nods and, slowly, shuffles forward. Carlos scoots to the edge of the rather large tub, and Jay lowers himself in carefully, not disturbing Carlos or Dude. Thereâs enough room for them to fit five people, but they sit side-by-side, Jay wrapping his arm around Carlosâs shoulders and bringing him close. âIâm not like him,â Jay murmurs. âI know thatâs hard to believe, because you had to live through it, but⊠Iâll always protect you.â
From where his head is buried into Jayâs shoulder, Carlos nods and says, âI know.â He pauses, and brings up his hand to rest on Jayâs back. âThank you.â
âAlways,â Jay murmurs, and he means it.

Give me your opinion about Carlos or give me death. *insert elmo in hell png*
also @kamiqueen
How I feel about this character:
i will physically fight for him, he is precious to me
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
well everyone knows harlos is my biggest otp in descendants fandom, so yes of course harry, i donât know how i fell into that rabbit hole, but i donât want to get out donât even try me, harry said âwoofâ and i said look thatâs love, bitchesÂ
ben as i mentioned in previous ask, everything about this ship is amazing, they are so gay for each other is hurts, i mean chocolate? good boy? âyou need to not stareâ? let him stare carlos you fool literary taming the beast? gayÂ
then of course harry x carlos x ben
uma x harry x carlos DONâT ASK, i read a fic and i loved it, and what about it??
i also love the concept of carlos x sea 3
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
evie, honestly their friendship gives me life i love them so so much, to me they are siblings (tho i donât judge anyone who reads them romantically)
and also the core four in general
My unpopular opinion about this character:
oh boy⊠so, most of the fandom sees carlos like this innocent sunshine baby, and HE IS sunshine baby, BUT heâs not weak, heâs not awkward, heâs not a coward, he doesnât get intimidated easily, and heâs not a ball of nerves, heâs not a blushing blubbering mess
carlos is strong and courageous, heâs fast and smart and sly, and anyone who underestimates him is a fool
he was the first of all the vks to stand up to his mom, and he wasnât even careful about it, he full on shouted at her, he was the only one who knew what to do when the alarm go off in the museum, while the others were running for their lifes caros was chill af and dealt with the problem
when harry barked at him he didnât. even. flinch. although phobia of dogs was something from his past
he fought gil out of all people for fuckâs sake! gil is like one and a half heads taller than him and carlos just went âben, get your ass out of here i got thisâ???
the only reason why he was so awkward with asking jane out was because he did something like this for the first time in his whole life, BUT even then he at the end of the day literally grabbed her by the hand and was like ok enough of all that please listen to me iâm trying to be bold here
i can went on and on about this but you get the idea, carlos de vil is my son who grew up strong and beautiful and he can kick all of our asses
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
thatâs it
also i would have liked it if they kept wigs far away from him and let carlos have camâs curly hair
and yeah i would have liked more of him in d3 in general and more interactions with sea 3 and core 4
give me a character and Iâll break their ass downÂ

Photo
Hey, so I havenât posted anything about it really, but I lost my cat, Harlo, to cancer last month. Iâve been really upset about it tbh and to work through (some) of my grief I made a music video with a bunch of her photos and old videos I have of her. I was going to post that, but I included some photos and video with my and my familyâs face and I donât feel comfortable doing that. So here are some of my favorite photos because I honestly just think itâs so sad that such an important member of my family is only mourned by my family.
So hereâs a lil memorial, under a cut:
Harlo June 14, 2010 (estimated) - June 10th, 2019
I rescued her and her sister (not by blood) Charlotte, when her previous guardian was able to escape her abusive relationship and wasnât able to bring her cats with. Harlo & Charlotte were and still are very skittish, but in the 8 years I had with Harlo she grew to trust my family.
Pictured with my dog Cloe, who passed a few years ago. Harlo liked all my dogs better than almost all the rest of the cats.
(Pictured with Ava and Lucy, 2 of my other cats - Harlo was always grooming Ava because Ava is a dirty lil shit. Meanwhile Harlo was terrified of Lucy for no goddamn reason lol. Harlo had no idea Lucy was there kdfsjfklsdfkls)
Harlo LOVED snuggling. Here sheâs on my hip, but her favorite spot is sitting on the chest, face to face, as she head butts. She could headbutt for hours. Iâm not exaggerating. After a nuzzling session, your face was damp and rubbed raw and you just felt so loved.
As close to a selfie of me that youâll get lol, but because Harlo loved sitting on my chest she photo bombed lots of selfies.
Honestly one of my favorite photos of her lol. She just looks so bedraggled lol.
As much as love her, at the end of the day she was my motherâs cat first and foremost - Harlo loved my mom so damn much. Â She even ran away once when my mom went on vacation - I spent a week trying to catch her and drag her back inside. Within 30 minutes of my mom being home, Harlo was back home.
She was just such a cute, naughty little girl. She loved sneaking outside as much as possible even though the neighborhood has so many stray cats and she sucked ass at fighting so she has returned home with 3 abscesses from cat bites in the 8 years me and my family had with her. I wish Iâd had more, but I wouldnât trade any of the time I did have for anything.
Sorry this post is such a mess I just... I needed to share what a delight and privilege having Harlo in my life was. I miss her so much. Feel free to send my photos of any beloved in your life, whether still living or missed. <33333

The Evolution of Junkspace
Schmidt Artist Lofts in Saint Paul. Source
My last post considered the Saint Paul skyway system as a prime example of what architect Rem Koolhaas terms âJunkspaceââthe vast interiorities devoted to capitalist machinations (think malls). Here are some thoughts on how Junkspace is morphing in the contemporary built environment.
Junkspace was first published in 2001, when I suspect the décor of the skyway-connected building I work in was brand new. Perhaps the fabled carousel still ran on the now-abandoned mezzanine level. Almost twenty years on, the skyway is dismal and the future of other consumer-capitalist monuments of enclosed space such as malls and McMansions is increasingly dubious. Junkspace, it might be, is leaving its indoor confines as privileged classes move back into the urban areas they abandoned for the suburbs many decades before (or, as their children and grandchildren do).
The Junkspace of the mall is a postmodern profusion of meaningless historical references. In the gentrifying warehouse district or former streetcar neighborhood, on the other hand, actual historical features are appropriated, consumed, and rendered as pristine as any mall. Garish patchwork buildings of corrugated metal spring up among the fetishized historic structures, branded with names that evoke either classic urban neighborhoods or software companiesâOxbo, Harlo, Lime, Vue. The streets of these neighborhoods are as conditional as any interior conditioned space. No loitering is permitted. Benches and planter edges have metal ridges to keep people from getting too comfortable in economically unproductive pursuits.
A harbinger of gentrification in the West Seventh neighborhood of Saint Paul, built along a former streetcar line. Source
An example of West Seventhâs historic architecture, whose very appeal threatens the fabric and affordability of the neighborhoodâthis building is almost directly across the street from the previous one. Source
Disturbingly, the retail environments in gentrified urban neighborhoods may offer fewer encounters with difference than suburban malls. Malls reduce people to the status of mere consumers, but there is something democratic in the wide range of offerings and the diversity of the visitors. The Time article I linked to earlier mentions that growing inequality is partly to blame for mallsâ decline. The more aesthetically mature Junkspace of the gentrified neighborhood focuses on a (wealthier) demographic with specific consumption patterns and bases an entire âcommunityâ on that. It blends work and life, turns the personal into a brand. It is as curated as a lifestyle Instagram account. Consumer capitalism merged with physical space and social identity.
One of the more heinous structures in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis (also along a former streetcar line). The target demographic is so clear that itâs more billboard than architecture. Source
Of course, street address has always signified status. But there is something different about the social-media-ready urban interventions manically declaring neighborhoods âup and coming.â Though these new-old neighborhoods manifest the same mixed-use typologies as romanticized urban communities of the early twentieth century, their relationship to their inhabitants is fundamentally different.Â
One of Uptownâs historic buildings, not far from the previous one. It began life in 1915 as a community-oriented theater, which refused to raise admission prices when other theaters did so. Source
A simplification: the history of consumer culture in the U.S. is a determined crawl up Maslowâs hierarchy of needs. Old-time advertisements, like the ones in circulation when those gentrifying brick neighborhoods were first constructed, amuse us with their exaggerations and lack of tact. They appealed directly to practical needs. By mid-century, products were increasingly associated with aspirations and status to appeal to a savvier and wealthier consumer base. Emphasis was on a distorted sense of belonging and keeping up with the Joneses. By Koolhaasâs writing of Junkspace at the turn of the millennium, consumer products were established by marketers as articles of personal identity. Now, social media allows us to buy and show off the self-actualized lifestyle, the script to go along with identity.
Photogenic gentrification, high-design cafes, and boutique stores are the tasteful backdrop to this lifestyle. Though theyâre more aesthetically pleasing than what Koolhaas describes, Iâd argue that these places are an evolution of Junkspace, which is, as Hal Foster puts it, commodity suffused into space. Space, product, advertisement, and consumer are one and the same.
Donât get me wrong. Iâm all for adaptive reuse, mixing old and new, and taking design seriously. I enjoy the brewery pictured above despite its bicycle-themed dĂ©cor. But thereâs a difference between community-driven growth and profit-driven growth. An aggressively marketed, demographically targeted neighborhood may end up visually appealing, but there will be a emptiness to the appeal and a superficiality to the community. Not to mention the people displaced by rising rent.

Interview with HARLOE
We had the pleasure of interviewing HARLOE over Zoom video!  HARLOE's new single "Overthinking" ft. Nile Rodgers is primed for the dancefloor or a roller rink, with slick '70s basslines and buttery synths. In the song, HARLOE laments the confusing feeling of not knowing where the other person stands, and the emotional unraveling that happens as a result. The song itself came together during a serendipitous session with fellow Roc Nation producer Fred Ball (Jessie Reyez, RAYE, Little Mix) at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London, where Nile Rodgers was also recording. HARLOE turned the volume all the way up on âOverthinking,â hoping to get Rodgersâ attention and sure enough, he walked in. What transpired after was Rodgersâ addition of a singular funk guitar line and a suggestion to not overthink the lyrics. The chorus was simplified to âOverthinking, over you,â and youâd be hard pressed not to catch yourself crooning along. Unlike many collaborations that are meticulously calculated based on streaming numbers or a desire to chase the charts, âOverthinkingâ came together from HARLOEâs own persistence, and the result is nothing short of disco magic.  "Overthinking" comes after the release of HARLOE's collaboration with Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins on "PWR RNGR." Layered with punchy bass lines and sensual electronics, "PWR RNGR" showcases how dauntless HARLOE can be when it comes to her artistry. Teaming up with Jeff Shum (Camila Cabello, Ella Mai, Demi Lovato) and Keith Askey (Earthgang, Syd), "PWR RNGR" instills a sense of confidence through bold instrumentals and empowering lyricism.  Self-produced and co-written with Jesse Saint John (Charli XCX, Lizzo, Kim Petras), her previous single âLiquid Truthâ is a promise to always be honest with a partner. On top of a syncopated bass drum beat and HARLOE's muscular keytar solo, she drops the saucy lyrics, âI left my panties and my soles out on the floor at your place, and if I got you I donât need em.â  HARLOE has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. Growing up in Queens, HARLOE was heavily influenced by her first-generation immigrant parents' records, New York buskers, and the latest hip-hop CDs. Years later, she aspired to be a musician herself and took matters into her own hands by posting singing videos on YouTube. Now based in LA, the self-made recording artist continues to make waves one release at a time.  For HARLOE, this new chapter of music and her forthcoming EP is about letting go of expectations and limitations and just having a good time. Itâs a reflection of the songwriting community sheâs built around her, and her commitment to being 100% herself - a keytar slinging party-starting boss bitch.  We want to hear from you! Hey friend! I'm your Descendants Secret Santa and I sent you a message a few days ago, but I never saw your response, maybe my message didn't send? Anywho, I write fanfiction, is there a specific story you want to read? I tend to lean toward Carvie, but I've written some Benlos and Harlos too, so do you have a prompt that you'd like to read? Any AU or scenario or anything you haven't read, but would like to?
oh shit sorry, i check this account mostly on mobile browser, as of lately, in which i have to manually go to tumblr dot com slash inbox to check for ask messages. guess i forgot to do that this week, since i donât generally tend to get a lot of asks. so sorry!!!!
oh gosh iâm really cool with like any ship, hence why i listed so many in my submission form. i mean, obviously, based on my url, my main preference is benlos, but iâm totally cool with carvie too! (itâs such a rare ship in this fandom bc i feel like people most commonly hc them as gay/lesbian, respectively, and therefore just really good friends.)
as for prompts and stuff, well, if you decide to go the benlos route, iâm super into anything involving beast!ben (since i tried my hand at writing it back when the movie came out). i mean, it could be based around canon, with the spell audrey put on him, or more batb-based where ben adopts his dadâs curse and needs carlosâ love to help break it. i just think itâs a great concept for them, especially with carlosâ previous fear of dogs (and king adam in full beast form). you know, itâd be a reflection of his growth.
if you go with carvie, uhhh... wow, i canât think of anything. i guess just like fluffy stuff where maybe it takes them a few years of living in auradon to realize that they have feelings for each other (especially going off the book canon of them bonding on the isle, but obviously people didnât really date on the isle). so they nervously confess and relax when they realize their feelings are reciprocated and kiss
hope this helps!!!

Hackers Dissect âMr. Robotâ Season 4 Episode 8: âRequest Timeoutâ
Episode 8 of Mr. Robotâs final season was intense. We discussed zip ties, phone restoring, location trackers, mixers, Elliotâs sloppy Python script, and the final hack [SPOILERS, obvs]. (The chat transcript has been edited for brevity, clarity, and chronology.)
This weekâs team of experts includes:
Jen Helsby: SecureDrop lead developer at Freedom of the Press Foundation.
Jason Hernandez: Solutions Architect for Bishop Fox, an offensive security firm. He also does research into surveillance technology and has presented work on aerial surveillance.
Harlo Holmes: Director of Digital Security at Freedom of the Press Foundation.
Trammell Hudson: a security researcher who likes to take things apart.
Micah Lee: a technologist with a focus on operational security, source protection, privacy and cryptography, as well as Director of Information Security at The Intercept.
Yael Grauer (moderator): an investigative tech reporter covering online privacy and security, digital freedom, mass surveillance and hacking.
***
Yael: I want to start out by saying that I agree Momofuku is good.
Micah: In the very first scene, in 1995, when young Elliot is playing hide-and-seek and hiding something in the Queens Museum, I thought it was cool that he was running past all this retro computer equipment from 1995.
Trammell: Getting to the Queens Museum from 2nd avenue is a long haul on the F to the 7. And isn't Krista's place somewhere in upper Manhattan?
Yael: During the cab ride, I couldn't believe they were still showing videos of Tyrell after he's dead. But I guess I can't say I'm surprised if they put a lot of money into producing it. I mean, it IS Evil Corp. Also, shoutout to Krista. She got KIDNAPPED and KILLED someone and was still counseling Elliot after all that. Talk about emotional labor. (Or don't, lol, Twitter is a mess.)
Micah: Yeah, Krista is quite the badass. I also liked that when they got to the police station and Elliot was like, "I can't go in there with you," she was totally fine with it.
Dom and Darleneâs Kidnapping
Yael: So the Darlene/Dom kidnapping scene reminded me of a conversation we had in a previous chat about duress, and how you can program stuff to lock you out, but if someone's gonna start offing people, maybe you don't want to. Also, how do you get out of zip ties?
Harlo: About a week ago, I did this kidnapping simulation, which was actually pretty harrowing. Before you go into the scenario, they try to prepare you by teaching you how to get out of zip ties, handcuffs, and duct tape. Brief detour: zip ties are fun. While you can definitely just bust them by bringing them down with enough force onto your hip bone, more substantial ones require a long enough shoelace, which you loop through the cuffs, tether to your feet, then flop over and pedal like you're on a recumbent bike to slice through the plastic. Super fun. Great parlor trick. But when I did the sim, it was tricky to feel confident and safe enoughâand unsurveilled enoughâto attempt the escape, even if you knew how to do it.
Yael: Timing is really important. I think Dom had the sustained training and probably experience to really use it to her advantage, in a way civilians probably don't.
Harlo: Also, kidnapping sims that you do after one day of training DO NOT ever bring in the "cuntstick" with a baggie full of different torture knives. That would absolutely dampen your spirit as far as escape is concerned.
Micah: I just wanna say that Dom is a fucking badass.
Harlo: Yeah, she fucking nailed it.
Micah: Pulling the knife out of your chest and stabbing someone else with it, then shooting your captors.
Yael: That was awesome. It was cool that Dom had a plan, too. I was pretty disappointed that she didn't before. And now the license plate thing makes sense whereas before I was like, of course Dark Army is surveilling you; they own you.
Harlo: I have a nitpick. In the scene where Janice calls her bang-bang-bois over Signal. Didn't Signal at the time NOT play the regular phone ringing tone? Instead, it was this kinda cool radar sound? It used to have this amazing submarine radar sound. Also, Dom and Irish bastard are not using Signal. They were using regular-ass phone. But whatevs. I feel like a fucking walking ad for Signal nowadays. I must be absolutely insufferable.
Yael: I heard something recently about how Signal wasn't secure for people in China who use an Android keyboard.
Harlo: It's because sometimes your keyboard is a snitch. It's not a Signal problem per se, but by default, you might find yourself typing secrets into Signal that are captured by your keyboard, and then, anything goes.
Yael: Well, maybe Signal shouldn't allow external keyboards, or not have them on by default, hmmâŠ
Harlo: In settings: there is "incognito keyboard," and if that's in your threat model, turn it on.
Yael: Do you think Darlene giving up her brother's location was the right call? Or his phone's location? She's basically trading his life for (maybe) saving Dom's family members' lives.
Micah: I don't know⊠it's kind of impossible to decide between who should get murdered and who shouldn't.
Jen: Mr. Robot's version of the trolley problem. I mean, a bunch of kids were gonna get killed. Sad, but a reasonable call.
Yael: Janice could just kill them anyway, though. It was hard to tell whether Dom thought Janice was gonna kill her family or knew they'd have escaped. But I can see why Darlene did it. I was surprised she didn't do it after Dom got stabbed. I want to know whether it's advisable to tell your armed kidnapper to eat shit, then die.
Micah: She gets my respect for it.
Yael: I've had a crush on Darlene since Season 1. Even if she is a murderer.
Jason: I think it's hard to consider Janice a credible person to negotiate with. She seems unreliable⊠why would Darlene expect to survive, even if she does everything Janice wants?
Yael: Yeah, that's why I wasn't sure it was a good call.
Micah: Yeah, she's terrifying because she's an unreliable psychopath.
Harlo: There are different classifications of kidnappings. What we saw on Mr. Robot was NOT the most prevalent one, which is just about squeezing money out of someone whose family/loved ones might have it.
Phone Restore
Micah: I think when Darlene wiped her phone, she actually wiped it for good and didn't have a way to recover the data again.
Trammel: The secure element or TrustZone stores a key that is inaccessible to the user. If it gets cleared, then the Flash memory is as good as erased. How did she recover it?
Micah: I don't think she could have restored it, not without taking a backup of the phone first. But when you take an Android backup, the Signal app doesn't back anything up, so she would have lost Elliot's location even if she did restore a backup. I think instead she just installed her hacked Signal client again, and got pinged from Elliot's phone again. That's the only way I can see that working.
Harlo: I don't even think that Darlene would need her Signal mod; Elliot's was modded only to ping with his latitude/longitude periodically. So all Darlene needs is Signal.
Micah: True. Her hacked Signal client must not care about safety numbersâsomething we talked about last week. Elliot's Signal client could decide to not trust Darlene's number again if her safety numbers changed, but it looks like that wasn't the case.
Harlo: Yeah, I guess there was no safety measure like, "do not ping if safety number has changed" baked in; too bad!
Yael: Darlene got sloppy! Or maybe it was intentional, in case she had to ditch her phone.
Micah: It takes a lot of trust to put an app that tracks your location on your phone.
Yael: She grabbed Elliot's phone from his hand and put it on for him.
Harlo: Signal wasn't available as a plain old APK then⊠unless you built it from the source code. But it didn't look like Darlene had a computer with her.
Micah: She had a shortened URL to download her modified APK. Also, it's possible she just logged into a Google account and downloaded from the Play store.
Harlo: Ah, then that would be most expeditious. What I'm curious about is how she restored it. Like, if you need to use the Play store, you need a Gmail account. Or F-droid.
Location Tracking
Yael: I thought Janice had a good point when she said, "You didn't give me your brother's location; you gave me his phone's location." A lot of drone operators should learn the difference.
They seemed like they were outside of Kristaâs house. How good is this geolocation tracking? Is it just a general location based on the deviceâs proximity to cell phone towers, or can it locate the exact floor in the exact apartment?
Jason: Geolocation on phones is flaky, especially if you're in an "urban canyon" like NYC where you don't have good line of sight to satellites. Phones also use Wi-Fi data and cell tower data to identify where they are, but it's not perfect.
Yael: Companies like Skyhook Wireless can provide very specific location data based on hotspot IP addresses. They have these huge databases that correlate hotspot locations with the IP addresses. They use a combination of direct hotspot scanning and the cooperation of app âpartnersâ who pass along hotspot IP data from users as they connect. But I dunno if Darlene would subscribe to Skyhook; it's hella expensive.
Jason: Those location databases aren't super reliable. They'll give you a latitude and longitude that is precise but not necessarily accurate.
Micah: Android has two location permissions, "coarse" and "fine." I believe "coarse" location works without GPS and instead relies on Wi-Fi access points the phone can see, combined with Google's massive database of Wi-Fi access points it knows about, and "fine" uses GPS. I think she would use the phone's built-in location services.
Yael: How fine is fine?
Micah: I guess it depends on where you are, but if you take out your phone, open your maps app, and click the button to zoom in to where you areâthat's how fine.
Jen: Kashmir Hill has done some nice reporting on some of the unfortunate situations that arise due to errors in those geo-IP location databases.
Yael: I was thinking about this recently with Protonmail. It has this new privacy feature that's supposed to remind your phone to wipe local data if you enter a certain area. But it looks like it would only work if you were right in the center of the country, and it seems like itâs hard to change the radius precisely.
Elliotâs Hack
Harlo: Elliot's stressed. Print twice?
` âprint out
Jen: Yeah, he had some syntax errors in that script. SyntaxError on line 16 (first line in the coinCoins() function).
Trammell: The main call is cleanCoins(), but his cleaning function that passes them through the tumbler is named coinsCoins. And since Python doesn't check that when it compiles code, it might cause a runtime error. Hopefully Elliot doesnât lose all his coins, like when Sonic hits an enemy.
Harlo: I was totes gonna drag him for that, but I gotta check the tape again; perhaps cleanCoins is above the fold and we don't see it.
Trammell: Sonic collects rings, not coins. Please disregard my attempt at a nerd reference and deduct one from my score.
Image: USA
Micah: One of the print commands was Python 2. The other was Python 3.
Harlo: In 2016, he was probably not using Python 3?
Yael: Elliot has been through a lot. Or maybe there were different personalities typing.
Jen: Mr. Robot is Python 2, Elliot is Python 3.
Yael: What is little Elliot?
Jen: He's that programming language for kids.
Yael: I learned the little Python I do know from the Python for Kids book, by the way. "A resource for the rest of us"?
Micah: Also, why is he using both os.system() and subprocess.check_output()⊠to call curl? You can make HTTP requests directly from Python.
Jason: Yeah, he should be using requests.
Jen: TFW your TV show doesnât get permission to use requests, so you gotta subprocess out to curl.
Harlo: lol, they can't afford the rights to show requests. Also!
Did yâall notice the autofill? _main_ (one underscore). Somebody's been writing some non-working code that they're hoping to deploy under duress⊠Also no pep 8, but hey, what are ya gonna do?
Micah: To be fair, he was in the middle of writing that script, and super stressed out, and clearly hasn't tried running it yet. So maybe we're not being fair. I have typos and broken stuff in my unfinished code all the time.
Jen: Yeah, we're just being annoying. It looks hackery enough for the show. We're just giving the readers of this article what they want: line by line code feedback. If I know anything about normal humans, they love Python programming.
Yael: I donât think heâs slept in many episodes, either.
Jason: If he was doing real development, he'd have Stack Overflow up, and he'd be copy/pasting from it.
Harlo: Anyhoos, okay, we've got some curl with a cookie; and what are those other flags? Don't worry about SSL if it's not available? I forgetâŠ
[Python Image]
Yael: I just want Darlene to finish the hack because she "happens to be smart and good at things," as she said several seasons back. If this episode was Request Timeout, does that mean the next one is Conflict?
Oh, dumb question, but does Darlene actually need to find Elliot to finish his hack?
Micah: I'm not sure⊠I'm actually a little unclear on the details of the hack they're in the middle of doing, and how it works.
Trammell: Looks like the plan is to steal cryptocurrency and pass it through a tumbler to launder it.
Yael: Can we do an ELI5 about tumblers and mixers?
Jen: A coin mixer is a service you can move your coins through such that you can hopefully disassociate the coins with where they came from (which one would do if coins were illegally acquired). Like money laundering.
Trammell: The base64 doesn't decode to ASCII, unfortunately.
Image: USA
Harlo: What does it decode toooooooo? Shall I get out the CyberChef?
Yael: I don't understand how any of this works, tbh. Like, I know he's trying to steal crypto. CryptoCURRENCY.
Micah: This Python script that Elliot's writing isn't actually the full hack. It's not even exploiting anything. It appears to be laundering cryptocurrency. I think once they steal the money, this is how they're going to retrieve it without getting caught. But this script isn't actually stealing the money.
Jen: The other comment is valid. It looks like at some point he renamed a function during development and when the main() function runs, it'll crash with a NameError.
Micah: It looks like the final output of the script is a list of new wallet addresses that the money was ultimately sent to.
Jen: Presumably, he'd run this in test before moving millions of USD worth of coins through a mixer.

We looked at 1,154 climate science results and found no evidence of 'publication bias'
underworld / shutterstock
It is rare to encounter a scientific fact that stirs widespread debate and distrust quite like the matter of climate change.
Despite consensus among climate specialists about a theory that is supported by a mountain of facts from the physical, natural, and cultural sciences, the debate continues to be perpetrated by politicians, industrialists, academics, and armchair scientists.
When governments reject science, the rest of us are put at risk. By refusing to accept the facts and potential ramifications of climate change, as a society, we stand to delay or overlook actions that are urgently needed to reduce our impact on the environment and adapt our cities and farmlands to a different future.
Climategate gave wind to the sceptics
Much of the intense scepticism about climate change science began in 2009, when thousands of emails and data files were stolen from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, in the UK, and later exposed under the guise of a purported conspiracy to alter facts.
The allegations claimed that scientists had only publicised results in support of their theory that climate change is driven by human activities. Other facts, that may negate this claim, were said to have been hidden.
A series of inquiries found no evidence that these scientists were in the wrong, though the investigations did generally call for more transparency. Selective reporting is indeed a serious issue in the scientific community, especially when it comes to theory building as theories require consideration of all available facts. Is it possible that the theory of climate change is based on a biased selection of facts?
We decided to find out.
Publication bias in the medical sciences
But what exactly is publication bias? If researchers only publish results that confirm their specific view or previous expectations or hopes, then the bulk of results in this research field will be skewed towards that established belief.
For example, if a researcher is developing a medical drug to treat a disease, then all results of the clinical trial should be made public for the benefit of other researchers seeking the same cure.
We know that, in medicine, positive and statistically significant results are more likely to be published than non-results. This poses a risk to medical sciences as failed experiments that are not reported may lead other researchers to waste precious funds pursuing dead-ends. Moreover, if only positive results are published, people will think the drug may be more effective than it truly is.
Still no sign of those negative results. Minerva Studio / shutterstock
Fortunately, there are established methods in numerical ecology and statistics that allow us to detect when non-significant results are missing from a field of research.
One such method is the Fail-safe N (or sometimes called the file-drawer problem). This refers to the practice of only publishing positive results but filing away studies with negative or non-confirmative results.
Statistically we can calculate the fail-safe N, that estimates how many negative studies would be required to make the statistical effect insignificant. This means that if publication bias was occurring in climate change science, we could detect it through missing negative results.
No evidence of publication bias
In our research, published in the journal Climatic Change, we analysed more than 1,100 published results from the field of climate change science and found no evidence of under-reporting or missing results even results that were not statistically significant or showing no positive effects were reported.
Our study revealed some stylistic biases in how articles are written, however. The largest, most prominent effects (as they relate to climate change) were reported in the upfront summary sections (also called the abstract) where they are most readily seen by readers, whereas the lesser effects and those that were not significant tended to be buried within the technical results sections where relatively few readers are likely to see them.
THIS GLACIER IS MELTING (for details of glaciers that aren't melting, see appendix, page 534) Laura Pl / shutterstock
Stylistic biases are less concerning than a systematic tendency to under-report non-significant effects, assuming researchers read entire reports before formulating theories. However, most audiences, especially non-scientists including journalists who report on the findings, are more likely to read abstracts or summary paragraphs only, without perusing technical results.
The onus to effectively communicate science does not fall entirely on the reader; rather, it is the responsibility of scientists and editors to remain vigilant, to understand how biases may pervade their work, and to be proactive about communicating science to non-technical audiences in transparent and unbiased ways.
Climate science is built on a solid foundation
It is important to stress that we are not climate scientists. Rather, in this instance, we functioned as scientists holding climate scientists to account and tested to see if their reporting practices were sound.
Although climate scientists tend to highlight their most interesting results in the abstract of their articles, something that is hardly unique to their field, we can be confident that the theory of climate change is built on a solid foundation that gives credence to positive, neutral, and negative experimental results.
In scientific terms, we reject the accusation made by climate change sceptics and can confirm that there is no publication bias in climate change research.

Ohoo Music
Harlo people, well hereâs a follow up of my previous post, turns out its things are finally working out and I hope this continues and stays. Well enough of the past for now hereâs something about me. I freaking god damn love music so much. I listen to all genre ( Iâm assuming ) and I respect, loved them. Here today to share some of artist or musician I like and listen to currently this past days.Â
First up its gonna be the recent album from Gorillaz called âHumanzâ. I was not really much of a Gorillaz fan until these past 3 weeks where I started listening to one of their songs in their recent album called âSaturnz Barzâ which I highly recommend alongside with âAscensionâ, âChargerâ and âAndromedaâ. I started going nuts on this band after that by looking up their storyâs, characters and singer/voice actor. What intrigues me most is that the vocalist for the lead singer is really really got me into it. Not only that the band all of them are so interesting and fun to look at.Â
Next is probably will be ProleteR. His music to me makes me feel all chill, old school beats, fun, and cheerful. Iâm gonna recommend something recent that he just publish and that is âThe Missing Pieceâ, âBadass Girlzâ and âMoonlight Jiveâ. They are some old classic beats he made like âApril Showersâ, it really makes you feel like you have grown and just remembering back the youngs day listening to it.
Finally, it would most likely be Khalid. Yeah heâs kinda growing know and so as his fan base but going to my favorite songs in his recent album âAmerican Teenâ would be âLocationâ, âSavedâ, â8Teenâ and âShot Downâ. God to be say simply I like quite a lot of the songs in that album. It has that groove and vibe to it that hits your body or emotion.
Well thatâs all for now peeps. hereâs the usual song of the post Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots. Song of the post itâs just a way to better interact with my fellow readers on how Iâm expressing myself through text. You readers would most likely get an idea how my mood is and feelings are when Iâm typing this down. Anyways till next time.
