"Blink" Bonny and "Pretty" Polly Gresley
The Gresley Sisters
I saw a recent pair of designs for Gordon's little sisters, Bonny and Polly Gresley, and it reminded them of some designs I half finished last year that I had only shared with a friend on Discord. Inspired, I finished their designs, and now I have them here for you all to see.
WARNINGS: Character deaths, characters have different fates to real life.
"Blink" Bonny Gresley:

Bonny was the elder of the sisters and became a protector of her younger siblings and cousins. Though she was a heavy-set girl and was charitably referred to by others as plain, she matched it with a huge heart. Some have theorised that Bonny may have suffered from some form of autism, which has been backed up by some things stated by Mallard in interviews. Mallard refers to her as his favourite cousin, claiming that she 'understood' him as a child and credits Bonny as the one who taught him 'coping' techniques that she herself used to calm down. But Bonny was never tested in her lifetime, and her brothers - Gordon and Flying Scotsman - have always believed that she would not have wanted to be.
Lacking the pompous arrogance of her elder brothers, Bonny had a reputation for being blunt and no-nonsense and for treating people in kind. There are even instances where Bonny appeared to have formed friendships with a few of the new diesels.
Bonny was one of the first Gresley siblings to meet her end. She lost control at high speed while pulling a heavy goods train and derailed, being killed upon impact. This was chalked up as an accident for many years, but upon the discovery that plans had been made to scrap Bonny within the year, along with unusually unanimous testimony from her surviving trucks and Break Van, it is now theorised that Bonny may have planned her accident as a means to go out on her own terms. Both Mallard and her brother Gordon have both expressed beliefs that this sounds very much like something Bonny would do.
Bonny was always very close with her sister, Polly, against whom she held no resentment for her beauty. She did not survive to meet her niece.
"Pretty" Polly Gresley (later Polly Bulleid-Gresley):

Polly Gresley was famous for being a great beauty, which would only be rivalled by her cousin Rhianna (who is now known as Ryan) but never beaten. You would be forgiven for thinking that she would be vain and possibly lazy, but you would be wrong. Polly hated her beauty and the way she was treated for it. Unlike her brother, Polly would demand that she be allowed to pull goods trains, complaining that she was being asked to pull coaches simply because everyone thought she was dainty and too proud to get dirty. Polly was very involved in social issues of the day and defied tradition by wearing trousers instead of a skirt or dress. Many said she was born a generation too late and would have made a fine suffragette - a movement she held a lifelong admiration for.
Polly died shortly after her older sister's accident. Polly had fallen for and married a member of the Bulleid family and gave birth to a baby girl, Rebecca. Following the birth, she suffered from complications and underwent surgery to correct them. From this surgery, she developed an infection and died shortly after.
In my AU, Rebecca is the daughter of Polly Gresley, which is the reason she comes to Sodor. Gordon was also aware of the deaths of his sisters as he was notified but was not told of his brothers' deaths until years later. Flying Scotsman took the deaths of his sisters particularly hard, as he was unable to come home at the time.

Pretty Polly and an A4 being Scandalous. Smokebox door open in public, really?
I can't really read which number it is but it looks like the last number is 7, which makes this either; Silver Fox (60017), Merlin (60027) or Sir Nigel Gresley (60007).
I suspect it's Gresley since 60007 has a strange habit of being photographed with his Smokebox open, even now.

Not to be that person... but I am going to be that person. My OTP from Old Gods of Appalachia is Miss Belle x Pretty Polly Barrow. If there is someone who change Pretty Polly, it's going to be Miss Belle.

Song spotlight: Modern Murder Ballad (Pretty Polly)
I guess murder ballads don't necessarily feature in most people's upbringings, and maybe I should explain what they are. They're a type of folk song that started centuries ago in Europe and eventually made its way to the United States, becoming especially popular in Appalachia. They can take different forms, but are usually about a relationship between a man and a woman that, for one reason or another, results in murder, usually of the woman, but sometimes of the man, and occasionally of just some random other person. American murder ballads in particular tend toward the gruesome.
I was thinking about these songs, and it occurred to me that, while a lot of my songs feature bad behavior of one kind or another, the actual body count is surprisingly low. So this is an experiment in what would happen if I tried to write a present-day murder ballad. Not to spoil the ending or anything, but everyone makes it out alive, though there is arguably a certain amount of emotional damage. I'm specifically satirizing the traditional song Pretty Polly. (There are a million versions of it out there, but here's one by Hilarie Burhans that I like: https://youtu.be/xH7dv85LfAk .)
Coming up with a name for this one was hard. I fiddled around with a few ideas before deciding on the most on-the-nose name I could think of, on the theory that, if the title can't be clever, at least it can be accurate...
I'm not totally sure what the target demographic is for bloodless parodies of 1800s murder ballads, but I'm hoping someone out there will enjoy it!
I want the song to be stark and driving and intense, so I went with an electric guitar on this one, and I've asked Ilana Katz Katz to come in and add some driving fiddle to the mix. I can't wait to hear what she does with it!
This will be one of the songs that will be featured on my new album, 'Totally Awkward'. To help fund it, go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jwghaller/totally-awkward-my-next-album , where you can pledge to get an early copy of the album (in digital or physical form) as well as other rewards and add-ons! The campaign ends soon, on Wednesday June 26.

My love on stilts, I feel so much higher than the sea! For my heart, he keeps it close for me. In a box locked in the depths, I want to go with along with him.
I’ve spent days lying beside him, pleading for love that was easily receptive. I could scream out the name of whom I forfeit my time over to but I am not confident in the longevity. I feel uncertain. As if there is something within him. Eyes that look dead to me. My hands to his chest, his heartbeat has never expelled my fears. It simply ignites them. He blesses me with fruit from a rotting tree.
First bite of an apple. I cannot taste the knife to my chest, what I taste is the blood. Last bite, my teeth sink hard.
Is this in vain? It’s a much deeper wound than he’s afflicted. My heart is flowing, seeping into him. Is this to be ignored?
Dead weight, in the limbo of living I can feel when he drags me with no pity.
My grave is dug with desire in his chest, the best part of my life. With dirt in my eyes you refused to shut, you walk away from me. Though even in my absence, I will never be ignored.
