I just listened to him on i think smartless, the podcast, and seems like he’s maybe just opened up a bit on his career qualifiers. The hosts even asked why he would do something like roadhouse and open himself up to injury etc and he was basically like well it’s to push myself. That’s what all my roles are; pushing myself outside my comfort zone. He also said he totally wants to do a rom com but he never gets offered them because people don’t think of him as funny lol. I think this happens wjrh a lot of actors who are pursuing some specific dream award or prestige or critical acclaim and then either achieve it or realize it might not come and they either work on themselves or have a revelation that the work itself has to be the prize and only they can decide what’s worthy of that. Made me happy to see for him that he seems to be there professionally cause personally…well lol

One of the aspects of 90s (and maybe early 00s) media that seems to be disappearing down the memory hole is how it was the last era where people were largely familiar with older TV series

Like, I was thinking of Laverne and Shirley, and wondering how the hell I knew Laverne and Shirley, and the answer was: because cable networks reran it. They syndicated a broad swathe of shows and tended to syndicate many shows; a network may air two episodes of one show, then another, etc, or dedicate different days to marathons of different shows (Sci-Fi did this when it was Sci-Fi, and they would include obscure one-season shows in the mix)

In comparison modern streamers and networks are content to spend lavishly on the same few proven shows. Fewer people subscribe to cable and most people just want to rewatch Friends and The Office for some reason so it makes commercial sense

Meanwhile, in the 90s to early 00s, cable networks mostly didn't produce their own content, so this made commercial sense. Like, cable networks didn't make drama shows, by and large; HBO, for instance, largely stuck to anthology series and comedies until Oz (...itself a bit of TV history largely buried under the influence of The Sopranos). Others made no scripted content at all and branded themselves around themed movie nights & rerun blocks.

(part of the reason was economic, part was that highly serialized content was hard to follow in the days before DVRs, streaming, & DVD boxsets, and part was that there wasn't much reward in producing prestige shows when cable shows weren't eligible for Emmys until 1988, and didn't start getting routine wins until several years after that)

But there was a weird serendipity to 90s cartoons running alongside 60s-70s Hanna Barbara shows and Looney Tunes. Revisit Cartoon Network promos from then & see how they blend, like, Superfriends in alongside Ed, Edd n Eddy. It all seemed natural, even though it clearly wasn't. And this trend lead to remixes like Space Ghost and Sealab 2021.

It was really the last gasp of the monoculture before it was disrupted by the internet, the scripted cable series boom of the '00s, and DVD Netflix, and a sign of the Gen X pop culture self-referential-ness that ran through the decade's media, and it left a bunch of children with extensive knowledge of shows from the Nixon administration, so it was okay I guess

On the adult side, Alaric is joined by faculty members Dorian Williams (Demetrius Bridges) and Emma Tig (Karen David), while on the teen side, Hope, Josie and Lizzie are joined by softie vampire MG (Quincy Fouse), activist vampire Kaleb (Chris Lee), reluctant alpha werewolf Rafael (Peyton “Alex” Smith), ex-alpha werewolf Jed (Ben Levin), bad girl with Penelope (Lulu Antariksa), and the audience avatar/mystery box supernatural mentioned above, Landon Kirby (Aria Shahghasemi). Nor is racial diversity the only benchmark hit with this large cast. In terms of queer representation, Josie is bi, with Penelope her ex/possible future girlfriend; in terms of class representation, Rafael and Landon are foster brothers who both have dark histories with the system.

Importantly, none of these measures of diversity are included just for show. Landon and Rafael’s history, as thrown away kids whose only shelter was each other, drives every decision they make. That diverse identities should inform characters in these ways isn’t a surprise; that Legacies is embracing them all now after so many seasons of its parent series falling short is, if not surprising, then at least worth taking note of.

5. Finally: Legacies totally knows it’s a TV show.
