Shaun: [excited and giddy] Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Can you believe it? They say a ghost is haunting the opera house! [excited squeal] How cool is that? Come on, let's go find him!

Nick: Oh, really? You get a little praise for your performance and now you think your vocals are a match for mine? Heh. Well, we'll just have to see about that, now won't we?

Shaun: [playful fake regal accent] So, what's the verdict, princess? Does this fine repast meet my highness’ royal standards?

Shaun: [chuckles affectionately, tone softening] Glad to hear it little baby.

Shaun: [Regal accent] So how about you? Does my humble fare satisfy the glorious new rising star of the opera house?

Nick: So how's progress with your part?

Nick: I know you want to study your greatest rival closely, but if you keep staring at me like that, I'm going to start to feel embarrassed. What's on your mind?

Ian: You’ve been so busy performing all day today. I figured you haven’t had anything to eat yet, so I brought something for you.

Ian: Tada~! There's nothing like some hot fresh pizza after a long day of work. Just like the old days, remember?

Jack: You did great out there today. I'm so proud of you. You worked so hard... but remember that resting up and eating well is just as important.

Pressed to explain his actions during Argentina's "dirty war" during the 1970's, Héctor Simón responded that torture "has always existed and it always will. It is an essential part of the human being." In his mind, his conduct was little more than a complement to the relentless cycle of the seasons. His self-serving instence that torture is inherent in the human condition should not discourage us from appreciating the crucial importance of historical context in understanding his actions during the Argentine junta of the 1970's or those of Americans during the 1850's, 1890's, or 2000's. His apparent intent was to mitigate the import of his historical agency and the particular acts of torture that he carried out on particular people in particular places, for particular reasons.

More often, torturers have dwelled on the exceptional circumstances that they claim provoked their conduct. Whereas Simón preferred to see his actions as swallowed up in the long record of human history, others have pointed to allegedly unprecedented threats that compelled them to act in ways they otherwise might never have contemplated. Cofer Black, the head of the CIA's counterterrorist operations during the War on Terror, voiced this perspective when he testified before Congress in 2002 [...]

Neither Simón's contention that torture is a historical inevitability nor the claim that each instance of torture is historically unique will enable us to make sense of the simulated drownings and other tortures that have punctuated American history. Both of these explanations of torture pose obstacles to historical understanding. Simón's perspective is fundamentally ahistorical; torture cannot be explaiend by appeals to metaphysical destiny. The other perspective, with its exaggerated emphasis on unique historical circumstnces that excuse specific acts of torutre, is no less ahistorical. It discourages, indeed percludes, any recognition that torture has been boht a recurring practice and a subject of debate sicne the arrival of Europeans on the shores of the present-day United States.
