10 May In Indian History :
Tumblr media
.. 10th May 1857 .. the great Indian rebellion .. the 1st war of independence against the British at Meerut .. the rebellion began in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army in the garrison town of Meerut ..
Meerut is situated between the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna ..
Thanks to its geographical importance, the fertile Ganga-Yamuna doab had been an important centre of human activities since the very early times of Vedic Civilisation.
From the medieval period onwards, the proximity of this city to Indraprastha (present day Delhi) helped it play an important role in the affairs of India.
With the capture of power by the British, Meerut became a major military centre. The aggrieved Indian soldiers of the British Army began their fight against the imperial powers in this soil on 10th May, 1857. They captured the control of the city in one day and marched to Red Fort in Delhi, which was considered to be the symbol of control over the whole of India. On their way, they were joined by the common people who shouted patriotic war cries. By the next morning, Red Fort had fallen into the hand of the freedom fighters.

Carpet with Palm Trees, Ibexes, and Birds
Probably made in present-day Pakistan, Lahore, late 16th–early 17th century
Cotton (warp and weft), wool (pile); asymmetrically knotted pile
This carpet, with its pictorial depiction of trees, birds, and animals, is conceived like a textile with a repeat design in which each unit reverses the direction of the preceding one. The ibexes, Chinese mythological beasts called qilins, and animals in combat, are derived from Safavid Persian art, as is the border design of cartouches and star-shaped medallions with cloud bands. The palm tree, however, is a very Indian feature, as is the generally naturalistic drawing of the flora and fauna and the bright red color of the field. The relationship to Persian carpet design dates this example to the early Mughal period, soon after the first carpet workshops were established by the emperor Akbar in Lahore, Agra, and Fatehpur Sikri.
Although the advent of carpet weaving in India predates his reign, it was the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1556–1605) who established imperial workshops for carpets, as well as a pattern of royal patronage. Carpet workshops were set up first at Fatehpur Sikri, the imperial capital only from 1571 to 1585, then at Lahore and Agra, and then, before 1640, at Kashmir.[1] Not all Indian carpets surviving from these early times necessarily suggest imperial manufacture, so commercial workshops must also have been in full production. Masters and workmen, many undoubtedly Iranian, are known to have come to India to help establish the workshops, and Persian carpets also clearly continued to be imported despite the high quality of local production.[2]
It should not be surprising, then, that this large carpet, representing production dating from late in the reign of Akbar, displays strong Persian influence. The most popular Persian convention was the symmetrical arrangement of scrolling vines with blossoms and leaves, but another approach was the use of pictorial patterns similar to those produced for paintings in royal manuscripts (the two conventions are combined in some examples). The field pattern here combines animals, birds, and vegetation in a pictorial way, that is, they are meant to be seen from one direction and without the matrix of a vine-scroll pattern to connect everything. Pictorial designs can be found in Persian carpets in a few examples of the small "Kashan" rugs and even more in a couple of pieces of the "Sanguszko" group; direct contact of some sort is also implied by the use of certain colors. Counterparts of several animals represented here may be seen in one of the Museum’s Persian rugs (no. 14.40.721), notably the leaping ibex, the combat between lion and ibex, and the leaping lion. Flames at the shoulders, indicating supernatural qualities, betray the ultimate Chinese origin of some of these figures, as transmitted to Iran in preceding centuries.
In many respects, however, this carpet is unmistakably Indian. In terms of structure, the cotton warps are eight-ply instead of the four-ply typically found in Persian carpets. As for color, the palette has a brightness, especially in the red, lacking in most Persian pieces, and there is a heavy use of ton-sur-ton coloring, juxtaposing similar colors such as red and pink, light and dark blue, and ocher and beige or off-white. The interlocking compartment design of the main border is related to borders found in Persian carpets (see MMA no. 1978.550), but here it takes a particularly Indian form in its geometricized compartments and the particular silhouette effect of the un-outlined red palmettes and vines set against the white ground. And the palm trees strike an Indian chord. As large as this carpet is, far larger ones are known to have come from Indian looms, including a pair of mid-seventeenth-century audience carpets, each about sixty-three feet long (approximately 19 meters).[3]

Don Felizardo de Rivera, Founder of Pila
Don Felizardo de Rivera y Evangelista (1755-1810) was the eldest of the three Rivera brothers, Don Felizardo, Don Miguel and Don Rafael. They were the owners of the estate Hacienda de Sta. Clara. They were the sons of Don Juan de Rivera, who had inherited the estate from the Spanish noble family, the Thenorios, and passed it on to his sons.
In the 18th century, due to flooding from its original location near the Laguna de Bay, the original town of Pila and its Church needed to be located to higher ground. So the Riveras planned to move it, just like their ancestor the Datu of Pila, Datu Maguinto, did in the 13th century.
However, a long, heated and controversial dispute rose between two prominent families at the time: The Riveras and the Relovas ("Pros" and "Antis". Don Regino Relova y San Antonio wanted the relocation on his land. Don Felizardo Rivera insisted that the town and church be moved to his hacienda in Sta. Clara.
Don Felizardo won after a long battle (starting October 14, 1794 and ending on July 13, 1803) after made an agreement with the parish priest: If the church was relocated to his estate, he pledged "the spiritual and material support of the Riveras to the church of St. Anthony in perpetuum up to the last of their line." The parish priest agreed.
Don Felizardo donated his lands to the church and to the municipal government but he also retained ownership of the lots surrounding what was to be the town plaza. He became the architect of the town's design, following Spanish colonial layout. He even built a kiln for manufacturing bricks and tiles for rebuilding the church, which was "transferred stone by stone" from its old location. The the ancestral houses were built around the plaza and the town municipio (municipal hall) was built opposite the church. With the assistance of the prominent families of Oca, Ruiz, and de Castro, he rebuilt the town of Pila ("Nuevo Pila") as it is to this day.
Don Felizardo served as gobernadorcillo in 1805, 1807, and 1809. He died on October 13, 1810 at the age of 55. He asked that "he be robed in the Franciscan habit upon his death and that a funeral mass be celebrated with him facing the altar of the newly-built church prior to his burial in the church crypt." His will (currently in the possession of the Rivera Family) was notarized by the town mayor at the time. At the time of his death, both pros and antis came to pay their respects and drop the long feud (the families later intermarried.) Don Felizardo's son Jose de Rivera later took over the gobernadorcillo post in 1811.
Don Felizardo de Rivera is the recognized founder of (Nuevo Pila) present-day Pila, Laguna, and the ancestor of the four main prominent families in Pila: Rivera, Relova, Agra and Alava.
WHEN A TOWN HAS TO MOVE: HOW PILA (LAGUNA) TRANSFERRED TO ITS PRESENT SITE (1794-1811) Luciano P.R. Santiago Philippine Quarterly of Culture and Society, Vol. 11, No. 2/3 (June/September 1983), pp. 93-106 (14 pages) https://www.jstor.org/stable/29791789
--------------------------------------------------
During the 16th and 17th centuries, one of the earliest known leaders of Pila under Spanish Colonial Period was Don Antonio Maglilo (1696-1712), who governed Pila like his father Don Francisco Maglilo (1599), (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 11), the descendant of datu Maguinto.
In 1728, Don Maglilo’s descendant, Don Juan de Rivera, the founder of one of Pila’s most prominent families, the Rivera clan, became mayor of Pila. The Rivera’s were a “major branch of the Maglilo(s)” and changed their surname to “Rivera”, the “Taga-ilog”, or “People of the River”. (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 17).
Don Juan de Rivera married Doña Josepha Thenorio, who descended from Spanish nobility from Extremadura, Spain. The Thenorio family matriarch was Doña Maria Cortés de Monroy, the sister of Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés (1485-1547). (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 16). (Writer’s Note: Cortes had relations and a child with the Aztec princess Doña Isabel Moctezuma (born Tecuichpoch Ixcaxochitzin; 1509/1510 – 1550/1551), a daughter of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II, and Cortes’s sister Doña Maria’s descendants married the descendants of a Philippine Pre-Hispanic king.)
Don Juan's descendant, Don Felizardo de Rivera (1755-1810), was at first a town executive from 1792 to 1793. He was governor of Pila in 1792. During the town move, he had drawn up grid plans (Cuadricula) in 1790 for the new site (where Pila was to be moved) based on the classical Spanish system of 'church-plaza-town hall complex' as originally prescribed by the 'Laws of the Indies (1573)' (laws issued by the Spanish Crown for town planning). He had become a self-taught architect. When the transfer was officially sanctioned (approved), he implemented his plans by serving as gobernadorcillo (governor) in 1805, 1807, and 1809 (he died in 1810). Because of his orderly design (of the town), Don Felizardo is considered the founder of 'Nuevo Pila (New Pila).' Don Felizardo retained all the residential lots around the rectangular plaza between the church and the town hall for the ancestral houses. The principal street is christened 'Rivera', which connects (the town) 'like a long umbilical cord' (back to) Pagalangan. (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 25). All the lots around the town plaza were given by Don Felizardo to his heirs, and the ancestral houses now stand on those lots.
Pila was moved again due to flooding from the lake, to Don Felizardo’s Hacienda in Santa Clara, Laguna. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pgs 9, 10). On May 20, 1804, Pila Church was also moved to land at the hacienda. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pgs 10, 11, 13) Today, the 200-plus year-old church is now called the San Antonio de Padua church, which was declared the National Shrine of San Antonio de Padua, contains a relic of the saint and is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The ruins of the original church are still standing at Pagalangan and have a historical marker as the site of the original church of Pila.
Don Felizardo is considered the founder of the present-day town of "Nueva Pila" ("New Pila") and the town’s designer and architect in the Spanish colonial grid style of city planning. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pg 12). The Pila Municipal Hall was later built in June 1931, across from the Church, on land previously owned by Doña Corazon Rivera de Del Mundo, daughter of Don Luis Rivera. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pg 20).
In his 1810 Last Will and Testament, Don Felizardo identifies himself as “Taong Tunai at Maguinoo” (a true maginoo). The document is with the Rivera family of Pila, Laguna.

Metro Advertising in Agra: Helping Local Retailers Attract More Customers
Tumblr media
For local players in Agra, being current and in plain sight in a growingly crowded market is a basic necessity to catch new customers and spur growth in one's business. Metro Branding in Agra is an outstanding opportunity for retailers to increase reach out where the popularity is day by day. Continuously moving citizens is an exceptional and effective tool for publicity from such local businesses into a highly miscellaneous crowd. With thousands of people passing the metro daily, composed of working professionals, students, and foreign and local tourists, retailers can put their brands before a vast and varied crowd. An affiliation with an outdoor advertising company guarantees that the retail shops get the best ad placement, design, and message to attract more and more customers inside their stores. Metro advertising is one of the most influential media channels for local retailers as it can target the most expansive age group.
Metro stations and trains at Agra are crowded by locals, tourists, and daily commuters. That's why it works so well to help retailers bring their merchandise and services before many potential customers. With the prudent placement of commercials through an Outdoor Advertising Agency, retailers are ensured of reaching consumers most likely interested in their line of offerings. A fashion boutique, for instance, may get young professionals by posting its advertisements near business districts. A home décor store can also market around the residential areas or tourist hotspots because tourists often look for souvenirs. This, therefore, allows Metro Branding in Agra to target advertising according to the specific needs and requirements of different segments of customers. That way, one can attain the maximum reach with those advertisements. Through metro ads, the local retailer can create excellent visibility for brands within areas where businesses may not yet have significant operations. Traditional forms of advertising, like print or radio ads, only reach a small audience and might not be as effective as an ad placed in a high-traffic location like a metro station.
As commutes are several minutes in stations and trains, metro advertisement ensures that your ad is on display all through that time, whereas, in other media, ad exposure is usually single time; thus, branding happens repeatedly with repeated exposures for brand recall to be generated in mind. Their ads may be placed wherever people will catch a glimpse- in escalators or trains- near the ticketing counter for entrance. This would be more crucial for local players trying to be in the minds of the residents and visitors of Agra. Another benefit of Metro Branding in Agra is the cost-effectiveness that it offers to local retailers. Traditional advertising channels appear inaccessible for many small businesses with a limited marketing budget. Metro advertising, on the other hand, provides a more affordable yet highly effective medium.
Local retailers can get their advertisements run repeatedly for weeks or even months after just a single payment for the campaign. This means they will get maximum exposure without the heavy load of enormous sums from the regular advertising costs. More than that, metro ads differ in format, from static posters to digital displays, giving businesses the choice of whatever suits them best according to budget and objectives. An Outdoor Advertising Agency enables retailers to use the budget effectively by selecting the appropriate format and location with the highest ROI. In addition to being cost-effective, metro advertising allows local retailers to use creative methods of communicating their message to the target audience in an effective manner. The retailer can utilize bold images, clear communication, and attractive designs to get their ads noticed amidst the busy metro scene. For instance, a local coffee shop can present its specific house beverages, an offer only the store offers, or a limited-time promotion in an attractive manner. In addition to that, there are interactive elements such as QR codes or links to retailers' websites that can invite commuters to make an immediate visit to their store or surf through their online platform. This digital metro ad is the platform with which retailers can update messages regularly to bring seasonal offers, special deals, and product launches into the limelight. Metro advertising allows retailers to take advantage of Agra's tourist traffic. The city is a popular destination for travellers worldwide, and metro stations often are their first touchpoint. Local businesses can capitalize on this tourism by creating campaigns appealing to tourists seeking something uniquely local or souvenirs. Advertising at metro stations following key tourist attractions will ensure that the maximum number of tourists visiting those areas will look for something to buy during their stay. This focused strategy can help increase foot traffic in local stores and sales during peak tourist seasons.
Metro Branding in Agra Finally, it has become a wise and powerful way for local retailers to increase their exposure, attract new customers, and compete in this growing marketplace. Broad reach, cost-effectiveness, and high foot traffic will provide enormous opportunities to develop a long-lasting presence in consumer minds through metro advertisements. A local retailer can ensure that their metro campaigns will be executed properly and strategically placed to have a higher impact if they consult with an outdoor advertising agency. Whether through innovative ad designs, strategic placements, or targeting the right audience, metro advertising can be a game-changer for local retailers in Agra, helping them grow their customer base and achieve long-term success.
