The Mechanics of Baldur's Gate 3

As someone who's constantly tinkering with the mechanics of my favourite RPG, I LOVE a lot of what Larian has done with D&D; not only accurately translating the base system but improving upon in ways I never thought of.

Playing BG3 feels good, and I want to see how much of their work I can adapt for my own table. As such, here's a breakdown of a bunch of little tweaks they've made to 5e (taken from the bg3 wiki) and whether or not I think they're a good fit for regular pencil and paper d&d.

Shove is not a part of the attack action. It is a bonus action available to all characters. Shove only pushes the target back an amount that depends on the shover's strength and the target's weight. It normally does not knock them prone unless they are shoved off a high ledge.

This might be THE best design Larian implemented and is instantly going in my games. Bonus action shoving is such a natural addition to combat, gives so many more tactical options. My one protest is that I am NOT calculating the weight of every creature and object ( mainly because I'm terrible at guessing weights for things) so I'd go with the distance calculation based on the creature's size and con score.

Gaining inspiration based on backgrounds

Gee, a mechanical reward for roleplaying your character, one that's way more straight forward than the DM arbitrated "ideals, bonds, flaws," system. From now on I'm going to give each of my players an upfront " You gain inspiration when you ______" note on their character sheet based on their backgrounds.

The party is limited to two short rests per long rest. Short rests restore each ally's hit points by an amount equal to half their maximum HP (rounded down). There is no hit die rolling. Long rests require camp supplies, which are food items that must be looted or purchased. In towns you will be able to rest at an inn.

This is a mixed bag for me only because I like hitdie as a mechanical abstract and I don't want to see them removed. Tbh I wish more mechanics interacted with them and they were called something abstract like "stamina" or something. That said I ADORE the camp supplies idea because it not only gives you something minor to reward exploration with besides GP. On the otherhand tracking all those supplies without the game's inventory management would be tedious as hell so it'd need to be highly simplified.

I especially like the idea of limited short rests/supplies in larger survival based adventures where time isn't at a premium like it is inside a dungeon.

If you hide while not in a creature's sight cone, you automatically succeed. If you try to hide while in a creature's sight cone, you automatically fail. If you are hidden and enter a creature's sight cone, you must roll stealth against the creature's passive perception. This may be a straight roll, advantage, or disadvantage, based on the creature's senses and the level of lighting. Some creatures with different senses such as blindsight may follow different rules

When a creature is at least 10 ft above their target and makes a ranged attack, they receive a +2 bonus to the attack roll due to high ground. When a creature is at least 10 ft below their target and makes a ranged attack, they receive a -2 penalty to the attack roll due to low ground.

This is fine, and quite inline with a lot of fixes I've seen for flanking rules. I'm fine with a little extra battlefield math in order to make moments of advantage (spending inspiration, reckless attacking etc) shine.

The game does not stop a character from casting a leveled spell with both an action and a bonus action

Mixed on this, on one hand I've played enough clerics to know how much it sucks to have to use your bonus action to do a necessary spell and then be stuck with a so-so cantrip or melee attack for standard. On the other hand there's some design balance issues at play here.

Help is an Action. This ability allows characters to aid an ally in combat and remove negative Conditions. Using the help action on a downed ally brings them back to 1 hit point and leaves them prone.

Love the idea of help doing multiple things AND being a solution to minor status conditions. and giving everyone the ability to help means I can be a lot more aggressive when it comes to knocking character to 0. if I had to further patch this, I'd say that this also allows for a medicine check to allow a creature to spend a hitdie when they're downed, or allows the helping character to make a "SNAP OUT OF IT, WE'RE YOUR FRIENDS" charisma roll for charmed allies.

Jumping is a bonus action which consumes 10 ft of movement speed. With a Strength score of 10 or below, a creature can jump 15 ft, and this increases by 5 ft for every two points in strength above 10. At 20 Str a creature may spend 10 ft of movement speed and a bonus action to jump, and can travel 35 ft effectively increasing the creature's movement speed by up to 25 feet.

This, combined with the prone rules (see below) is JUICY, as it allows for risk-reward battlefield mobility . That said I'd add some caveats/clarifications: The jump always succeeds in moving you, but if you're taking damage, jumping up or down more than 10ft, or into rough terrain you need to make an acrobatics check not to beef it and fall prone (ending your turn). Your jump is likewise a buffer for how far you can willingly fall before taking damage, but if you fall after your jump, you always land prone.

Weapon actions, 'nough said.

It's more complexity than I'd give to first time players but HOT DAMN if it isn't a great idea to give the martial characters some options instead of just making the same attacks over and over again. I've actually been sockpiling 3rd party versions of this for a while now and I can't wait to add them in.

All The conditions are great:

Blinded: In addition to the other effects, ranged attacks are limited to 15 ft range. Blinded creatures can also make opportunity attacks.

Frightened: Creatures which are frightened are unable to move at all (rather than being unable to move toward the source of their fear), unless the effect instead makes them "fearful" which gives them the frightened effect as well as making them flee.

Prone: Being prone gives disadvantage on Strength and Dexteritysaving throws, attacks against a prone creature have advantage out to a range of 10 ft rather than 5 ft, and ranged attacks against a prone creature do not have disadvantage. Your character cannot do anything while prone. Starting the turn while prone will cause you to automatically use half your movement to stand up. Becoming prone during your turn automatically ends your turn.

Wet: This is a new condition that prevents the character from burning (e.g. from Searing Smite) and grants resistance to fire damage, but also makes the creature vulnerable to lightning and cold damage

2019 Volvo XC60: Helicopter Parent

I didn’t care that it was a grocery getter Volvo and not some $100K Polestar saloon. Like 90% of American SUV buyers, My only concern was that the “utility” part wasn’t wearing minivan sheet metal. I get enough Dad Bod/Mom jeans snark already.

Then I started driving it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s a competent $50K Scottsdale trophy wife-worthy quasi-truck. The devil in the details is relentless.

So here’s what’s good:

SiriusXM - no subscription. About the regular radio - I couldn’t find the preset setting to delete all the hate talk and religious channels these rentals often have. On the plus side, instead of presets, the radio automatically put in all the stations whose signal was strong enough to register. While driving up the Michigan Coast Highway, there was an occasional bleed over between the local station and the Chicago station using the same frequency.

WiFi Hotspot. Sounds good in theory. The feature was buried in a menu I stumbled upon on my last day with the car. (Karen: How am I supposed to read the Facebook without wifi?)

Some of the safety stuff my Honda has - adaptive cruise, lane departure, driver alertness, traffic sign reading.

Then there’s the other stuff:

The engine light was on. Step one - check the gas cap. There isn’t one. OK. Step 2, check the oil. Good luck with that. There’s no dipstick, dipstick. Somewhere in the cascade of menus (once you figure out how to get there) is a screen that tells you the oil level. Avis thought it might be cheap (i.e., low octane) gas. The car demands premium. It’s a turbo, so that should be a given. A tank and a half later, that wasn’t it.

TFW you need to scrub off speed quickly and you slap the lever a few times and you’re still in 4th or 5th gear.

The half-hearted cleaning by the rental company highlighted the cheap brittle plastics on the center console. I noticed both, because I had to unstick the buttons. Cue the frat house flashback of incongruous, mysterious (and best left that way), sticky things.

I couldn’t really tell much of a difference between driving modes, except for “Off-Road.“ Basically, it uses low gear hold and engine braking and maybe regular braking to slow your descent. I kept in in sporty most of the time, for the sake of the S in SUV. Economy mode made the engine start/stop more aggressive, like when coasting.

The tech. A blessing and a curse.

Factory GPS loves the highways. It only wants to tell you the fastest way to your destination. She’d get so PO’ed when I detoured or stopped to look at a thing.

“ Harman Kardon” audio sounds promising. I remember that name as being on stereo components I could not afford. Do you want to explore the sound quality? Have your passenger scroll through 17 menus.

Basically, always have a passenger, even to change the temperature.

You’re so naggy, Karen. The lane departure is supersensitive. The traffic sign and lane departure don’t sync up for things like construction zones. Driver alertness is 3 strikes and you’re out. Karen wants you to pull over.

Karen is happy to tell you when you’re in a no-passing zone. She is blithely unconcerned when the pass restriction ends.

She is right on top of those speed limit signs. 1 mph over the posted limit and the dash starts flashing the speed limit sign at you. It’s been a couple of weeks, but I think she also lost her mind a little if the speedo read above 80.

Not that I know from experience. Must have read that in the owner’s manual.

Android Auto -Karen friggin’ hated it. The Google GPS window is tiny, compared to the built in version that can be almost full-screened. On Bluetooth, Karen is happy to read your messages. Just tell her what line number. *Looks at big screen* What do you mean, “select line number.“ 100 miles later - Oh, the OTHER screen. The one with the speedometer I’m supposed to be checking occasionally. Got it. Plug that phone in and Karen’s mood changes. At first, it’s OK. She’ll play the Habanera on Spotify, but it sounds dull because you haven’t figured out the stereo controls yet. Sigh

At first, you can compose texts through Google instead of the canned responses of the factory interface. After a while, the green-eyed monster awakes. Suddenly your phone is simply not available to take your dictation. Karen has no explanation. Just “NOPE.” Also, she blames the phone for the problem that didn’t exist a minute ago.

I never did figure out the mobile wifi - I didn’t even find the screen with it until I was returning the car.

Misprints: Miscuts and NFCs

So, since the sheets of WAR have been distributed widely and chop jobs have been done putting a lot of cards with “defects” on the market I should warn people about the misprint market. I am a whore for cool cards, so I have some experience in this field, though there are many people who specialize in this field of Magic and can tell you even more. First, terminology; NFC stands for not factory cut. This is an important distinction as misprinted cards carry a premium for collectors of oddities, but NFCs are manufactured miscuts, and therefore are not an authetic rarity produced by WotC’s printers. The difference in value can be astronomical, a rarity made by WotC fucking up is pretty uncommon, while a fair percentage of sheets that are distributed through GPs (or Magic Fests) and so on are turned into these NFCs. Thats not to say NFCs are worthless, they are usually valued much higher than a normal card based on the rarity of the sheet. These War of the Spark sheets were mass distributed and still offered in prize walls, therefore these particular NFCs have a very low premium. Something like an original Zendikar, Innistrad, or other sheets from that era were not quite as easy to obtain and therefore gettign a unique NFC for your collection will carry a high premium especially for the chase cards.

How can you tell?

There are several ways to determine the authenticity of the misprint. Mainly it has to do with pedigree. Misprints come from the same sheet that has been processed with an error, real misprints have others of the sheet that can be found and often appear in the same box. Many misprint collectors will go after boxes that have yeilded hits and will take videos to have proof of a card originating from a pack. There are ways to find it out without video proof. NFCs are not cut by the same machine as normal cards. Inspect the borders of the card, normally NFCs no matter how careful you are do not come out with the pristine borders that a pack fresh card has. Additionally, all sheets WotC collects to distribute uncut are rolled up much like the WAR sheets came in the mail. They will have a curve to the card that kind of gives away their history. The next determination of pedigree is knowledge. Not all sheets are out there to cut up. Commander products for example are not distributed as uncut sheets most of the time, and most pre-modern sets did not exist as available sheets, note there are some exceptions including Beta, Unlimited, Antiquities and more. There are many sets like Dominaria that had a lot of quality control issues. I know a ton of non-foil uncommons from Dominaria have The final test is the “if its too good to be true it probably isn’t true.” A misprint that is natural is often only off by a little bit, but when you can align it any way you want to cut it you can go as crazy as you like. Extremely warped and misaligned cuts are almost always NFCs. 

Determining “value” of a miscut.

As a general rule, with any unique item the value of the item is based on how much someone will offer for it. Most of the time misprints are sold in auctions because you can’t really just set a price as often you cannot pinpoint exactly where it falls. In terms of a miscut though there is anopther rule. The more cards present on a card the higher its value (technically you always have parts of other cards, but the black border is often considered to not be part of the next card in terms of counting cards). You can have the parts of six cards showing on a single card, but to my knowledge there has never beena  natural misprint of that severity, I’m not sure if there is even a natural five out there. Most of the time a card will be shifted in one direction and a single other card will be showing. The high premium natural miscuts are cards from a sheet that was twisted. These cards sometimes have warped almost alpha-like corners on some of their edges because the sheet went through everything wrong including the corner cutter. These twists tend to show three cards, but sometimes four and those are heavily sought after. Another thing that adds value is the degree of the shift. The more of another card you can see the more it is worth. Seeing part of and recognizing what the adjacant card is without needing to look up sheet patters is pretty cool, but once again, most natural miscuts are only severe enough to see what color the adjacant card was. The next value increaser is what the adjacant card was. You have a peice of a highly sought after card on your card? Thats pretty cool, but what most misprint collectors like to see is sheet edge. The white or silver in the case of foils that is where the cards end and the extra is supposed to be cut off. You can sometimes find things like the color bars and product information written on the sheet edge, and these unique little tidbits can add a lot of desire for a very unique card. As for NFCs most of these attributes apply in the same way, which incentivises people to cut their sheets in as interesting ways as possible.

Most people in the misprint market are honest about their NFCs, and will straight up tell you in the listing that its a NFC, but with so many new sheets out there there are new sellers who might not be as honest. In the specialty group I acquire most of my oddities from they have pretty strict rules about clarity on NFCs, but still many people might not even know what that stands for at first and end up paying much more based on assumptions on Ebay or someplace like that where contact with the seller is more limited. Just be careful when you are trying to find these unique kinds of cards to make your deck more personalized.

Also, a little disclaimer. As long as a card is recognizeable as one card that you are using it is legal. NFCs can be legal if the cut isn’t too severe, but the final call always comes to the judge. It is the same for alters and so on, check with your judge beforehand, and don’t argue if they disagree. Miscuts should primarily be used for non-sanctioned play as you can’t rely on their legality every time.

Also also, as a bonus here are two miscuts I own:

Sidisi is NFC, Dragons of Tarkir isn’t a common sheet compared to the more recent sets, but its not exactly a super rare sheet either. It is shifted both vertically ond horizontally. Sheet edge is showing on the left side though it is just a sliver, and Dragonlord Ojutai is showing on the top with its power and toughness visible. Basically checking of lots of the “value added” marks, something like this in now way would be natural. Myriad Landscape is a true oddity. Comander Anthologies did not have available sheets. This one is a twisted miscut, but it only is clearly 2 cards with a tiny bit of a 3rd. the top right and bottom left corners are warped a bit (not the best picture to show those off I know) which is the direction of the twist so that checks off as factory damage while the sides and other corners are very clean like any normal card. Its on the higher end of severity for a natural miscut, but there are much more impressive examples out there.
