All Official LAIKA animatics, and then some.
It has come to our attention that LAIKA has removed the "Animatics" section from their website. Fear not, if you don't have the versions of the DVDs with the animatics included I have taken it upon myself to do a little bit of internet sleuthing, and nab them from an archived version of the website! [Please be aware that some of these animatic videos are sourced from individual artist's portfolios, and not the LAIKA website. Sources will be given upon request.]
Coraline
ParaNorman
Boxtrolls
Kubo
Missing Link
Additional notes: Most of the Kubo animatics were originally storyboards that I put together as MP4 files myself. You can find the originals here.
For the feature-length storyboards of every film, click here!
For auxiliary storyboards from an early draft of Boxtrolls; Click me! No, click me! You can click me, too!

Note
wolfy this might be a stupid question but what's the difference between an animatic and an animation
Animation is like. Smoother? I guess. Animatic is the rougher version of it, like a draft. It usually has mostly the key poses and maybe some breakdown poses, but when you start inbetweening (poses in between frames to smoothen the action) it starts getting into the realm of animation
What's funny is a lot of animatics on YouTube aren't really the industry definition of an animatic, they're so much more defined and polished that animatics you see in pre production. Mostly because those on yt are already the final works, while pre prod animatics are like preliminaries for before the animation

An Odd Collection Of Characters For An Equally Odd Concept! Too bad it didn’t get green lit! Love the fact voice artist Jim Cummings was involved from the get-go!
Tumblr media
Development Art and Animatic for a Untitled Disney TVA Variety Sketch Comedy Series created by Audie Harrison (Cartoon Network Studios "Uncle Grandpa" and "Sunshine Brownstone").
The series would have featured the characters Chip 'n Dale ,Lilo & Stitch, Tigger from Winnie The Pooh & Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland on different variety sketches ala Warner Bros Animation "MAD" and "Right Now Kapow".

Ok so. Good news and bad news and good news wrt my thesis animation
Good news: i just punched Premiere into giving me a preliminary cut of the animatic.
Bad news: I timed it as tightly as I could and the cut is still almost 2 minutes long. That's A LOT for me to animate and edit together by myself in a little over a month.
Good news: there's a lot of shots of the characters just sitting/standing there that possibly account for like. 15 to 20 seconds of chill time. So maybe I'm not fucked.

Meeting with Sarah
Today I had my first in-person meeting with Sarah in quite a while to discuss my progress and plans. I was able to present to her my preliminary background designs, and she had seen my animatic previously. There were questions raised as to whether I would be able to get everything finished in time, but I assured that I would, since I won't accept another mark below a pass.
Following this meeting, I will be able to begin working on my backgrounds to completion, as well as beginning to draft up an idea for background 10 and another learning agreement.

Hello hello! so far with my junior film, I have established my tones and concepts so far for the film. As I am taking a lot of time in developing jokes, characters, and making sure these concepts stick to the wall before a full execution, it's involved a lot of messing around and creating quick tests, like shown above! I've learned that a lot of these jokes are going too fast! so now I'm met with the challenge, do I make more characters, more jokes? or pad out the jokes I have already made? The answer? More! while padding out jokes can be good if necesarry, if I overdo it, it feels as if I'm trying too hard, and that isn't funny. In all, I've started boarding, finished preliminary character concepts, and first runs of jokes! Next up on my work schedule is putting these characters to the best, making an animatic of all of this in action!

Choppy-the short film #10
Entering the final chapter of my animated endeavors with Choppy, I embarked on the creation of his first-ever short film – a significant milestone, especially as it marked my foray into crafting an animation exceeding one minute in duration, a requirement for my last year at school.
This project stood out as a unique fusion of real-life footage, 2D animation, and 3D animation, presenting a multi-dimensional storytelling approach. To streamline the creative process and refine the narrative flow, I diligently crafted an animatic as a preliminary step, serving as a visual blueprint for the final animation. This meticulous planning laid the groundwork for a more polished and cohesive short film featuring the beloved character, Choppy.

Then,the final animation:

I faced a moment of profound uncertainty when the decision loomed over which final project to present. However, life took an unexpected turn with the tragic loss of my beloved kitty, Simba. In the midst of grieving, a poignant realization dawned upon me – an opportunity to blend my dual desires.
Choppy became the vessel through which I could not only fulfill my commitment to his short film but also pay a heartfelt tribute to Simba. In a fusion of creativity and emotional catharsis, the final animation served as a touching homage to my cherished feline companion, allowing Choppy to lend solace and artistic expression during a difficult time in my life.

Week 3
What was supposed to happen this week?
This week, catching up on what was missing from last week was necessary, so writing the script and drawing the storyboard was necessary. After that, record the voiceover (Almurad voice) and the beginning of the animation.
What happened? What have you accomplished?
First, the script for the video was written.
Tumblr media
Put the script on a storyboard and coordinate the motion in it.
Tumblr media
Recording the voice of the narrator (Almurad / the story's hero).
Tumblr media
The beginning of the animation with an (animatic) design to link the sound with the frames.
Group critic.
Tumblr media
What is my reaction, and what are my future plans?
In my opinion, this is a good start, as it has been determined what will be in the video and defining the sounds and motion that will be based on it, thus facilitating the drawing and design process. In addition, the girls' comments "in the group critic" were very useful in designing the bookmark, editing the video, and linking it to the Graphic Novel using a Barcode or something similar. In the next week, work will be on the animation and a preliminary design for the bookmark in terms of sketching and confirming the idea to start with it.

Blog Post 2
The skills I bring to the table are illustrative and photo editing skills. The product that has interested me are films and specifically animated films and my project will be a animatic, a preliminary film comprised of storyboard frames that ultimately becomes the animated film. An animatic allows me to collaborate with other students as voice actors or composers for the scores of the film. I will create this animatic in 5 clear steps. Step one will be the rough draft phase, in which I will work on create and finalize the ‘look’ of the film. Final designs for characters as well as the setting. Step 2 I will write the story. I work from a character first mentality and I prefer to have fully fleshed out characters before I write the story they will act in. Step 3 I will draw the storyboards. Since these storyboards will also be the keyframes of my animatic, I will spend most of my time in this step. Step 4 I will gather the music, voice clips, and sound effects that will accompany the storyboard frames to transform the bland storyboard frames into a film that can be enjoyable to watch. Step 5 will be the final editing phase in which I gather everything into one final piece. This includes final adjustments to storyboard frames, the inclusion of music and sound effects into the frames and timing everything into a film. The most iconic hip-hop related project that has inspired me to try my hand at an animatic would have to be Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. The soundtrack of the film included several hip-hop songs to give the film a distinct feeling separate from the feeling one gets from the other Spidermen. This final project will be between 5 and 10 minutes depending on how ambitious I am and how willing I am to dig my heels in and create a work of art. I will have this film posted on YouTube for all to see and enjoy. I will not promote it outside of word of mouth advertising and a link in my online portfolio. I will complete this project within the next 5 sessions by working on one ‘step’ each week. This is of course malleable as certain steps may take shorter or longer depending on how efficient I am. My mentor will be my friend, Ryan, and he will play the role of anchor and the ‘guy with a gun pressed to the back of my head’ to ensure I get this project done. He has just about 7 years history in writing and has been a person I have been able to rely on to help me stay focused on a goal and get a job done.

"This Day Aria" - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
"No, I do not love the groom
In my heart there is no room
But I still want him to be all mine"
VS.
"Devil's Train" - The Lab Rats
"Ooh easy with the tongue son, try to listen carefully
What you seen's scary but nothing can compare to me
I could show you things that paint all your dreams haunted
Or I could make you scream if I wanted"
Have in mind that we're voting on how Iconic they are for ANIMATICS, not for the song itself. In order to make things fair, the tone and mood of the song should not affect how iconic it is (for example, a serious song should not be considered more iconic than a joke song just because it's serious)
The winner of this round will get in the real competition and the loser will compete with the rest of the losing songs from the preliminaries to get a second chance of getting in
Propaganda and animatic links of the songs under the cut:
"This Day Aria" - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic:
No propaganda submitted
Animatics:
BNHA Animatic
Identity V Animatic
QSMP Animatic
The Magnus Archives Animatic
"Devil's Train" - The Lab Rats:
Devil’s Train is an amazing song about someone being driven mad(?) from being lured or having visions, idk it’s really up to interpretation which makes it a good animatic song. Not to mention it slaps????
Animatics:
Gravity falls Animatic
CreepyPasta Animatic
Alice Madness Returns Animatic
Slimecicle Cinematic Universe Animatic

16-12-22: Revised Animatic
I assembled the storyboard as an animatic, adding a voiceover of the poem read by me. It really made this preliminary version of the film come alive. After watching it and making final tweaks with timings and transitions, I feel confident in my film and I will now be able to start animating in the next semester.
