'Twas the Night Before Study Abroad
Eeek! Tomorrow at 11:55 my first flight will be taking off. How crazy that it's finally time to go to Italy! It doesn't feel quite real yet, but I'm sure once I'm on that 8 hour flight I'll definitely feel it.
It is a bit scary knowing that I am going to be flying to Europe, an entire continent I have never been to. On top of that I literally do not know a single person in my program or really anyone in the country. Well I mean there's that one girl from 6th grade soccer in Florence, but I'm not sure if that really counts.
I have obviously been thinking about this experience a lot as it will literally become my life for the next four months. Since I am leaving in January as well, this semester is going to come with some resolutions. First off, I am excited to be back on a schedule and have some structure and things to do. It is hard for me to stay motivated and going when I am home for winter break, especially since this one was a bit longer than usual. Next, I had some rough patches with old friends last year and coming home I feel like I have grown apart from people who were past friends. Therefore, I really want to make some friends this semester and be open to meeting new people. I want to be authentic and make real bonds and memories with these people whom I will share a semester with like none other. I already know study abroad friends will be special because when else do you go live in Europe with a bunch of strangers! Third, I want to chose experiences. Study abroad is obviously an expensive time, but I hope to spend my money on great experiences and trying new things. Finally, I am going to work on loving myself and time with myself. I set up my class schedule so that I have no Monday classes and my Tuesdays start late (also no one has Fridays but that is university standards not me). I hope to use these free times to do things for myself that usually slip away when I am in America. I want to walk around the city every Monday morning and sit by myself sipping a latte and reading a book. I want to love those moments of being all alone that seem scary and like you're failing because you have no friends by realizing I am choosing this and enjoying my time and this is relaxing and not a reflection of if I have friends or not.
I have thought a lot about these personal goals that go beyond just my bucket list for sightseeing or budgeting. (trust me I have plenty of those though) Study abroad is a great time to experience life and really grow in ways that I will be able to take home as well.
So my suitcases are packed (mostly) and I have a travel day outfit picked out. These next four months are going to absolutely fly by. So while I am a bit scared and sad to leave, I am also hopeful and excited for what's to come. (I think positivity and being flexible will be key to this semester) Stay tuned for what's to come when I touch down in Rome on the 24th at 10am!!

New Zealand Trip: PreDeparture
Hello everyone! Today starts my 3 week journey to New Zealand where I will be traveling to 4 different cities, learning about the New Zealand culture and the sport history. One thing I am excited about New Zealand is meeting the All Blacks organization. The all Blacks are known to be one of the best rugby clubs in the world, and getting a chance to meet them is incredible. One thing I am a little nervous about is the culture. I haven't really experienced a new culture before, and meeting one on the other side of the world makes me a little nervous. One thing I hope to learn from this journey is the dedication the kiwis have towards their sport, whether it is football, rugby, cricket, or anything else, I would like to know the difference in dedication us Americans and the Kiwi's. A personal development goal I want to achieve on this journey is my social skills. Meeting new people outside of the country is not my expertise, so I want to become a very good communicator and friend of the Kiwi's when I arrive. #PreDeparture

It’s our passion to help you discover and achieve your dream career—and with so many incredible universities to choose from—help you find the best fit for you.
So, if you’re unsure if you can make the big leap, just know that there are thousands of students who “took the plunge” before you. Here’s what they have to say about using our services and choosing to study Down Under:
“Thank you very much for the service that you guys provide. I hope you know that what you do is changing lives and fulfilling dreams that would have otherwise been wait-listed.”
“I’ve had an amazing experience with OzTREKK; I couldn’t be happier with the services provided. The OzTREKK team fielded my numerous questions and queries from the pre-application phase through departure promptly with professionalism, friendliness, and were always filled with relevant information. The ability to keep tabs of applications via the online portal was great, allowing those who have the insatiable need to check for updates to do so without having to reach out to OzTREKK (even when you know there hasn’t been a change—because any update was accompanied with an email!). All the seminars (medical licensing, predeparture, etc.) were invaluable in getting prepared to move to Australia for medical school), ensuring that we had the tools and info needed to succeed. To be frank, I think OzTREKK has things right! I’ve spoken with other international students who applied through agents, and no one could believe the level of service and friendliness the Canadians who applied through OzTREKK received.”
“OzTREKK was great I can not talk highly enough of them.”
“OzTREKK is amazing. They offer so many services, and they’re very helpful when it came to the application process.”

Essential Boat Safety Checklist and Equipment: Your Guide to Safe Navigation
Introduction:
When it comes to boating, safety should always be a top priority. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a novice on the water, having a comprehensive boat safety checklist and the right Boating Equipment can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. This article will guide you through a detailed boat safety checklist and highlight important safety equipment that every boater should have on board.
1. Boat Safety Checklist:
A boat safety checklist serves as a systematic way to ensure that all necessary safety precautions are taken before setting sail. Here are some essential items to include in your checklist:
1.1 Predeparture Checks:
- Verify that the boat is in good condition and properly maintained.
- Ensure that you have the required documents, such as registration and insurance.
- Check the weather forecast and avoid going out in adverse conditions.
1.2 Emergency Contacts:
- Keep a list of emergency contacts readily available, including local Coast Guard, marine police, and a reliable friend or family member.
- Make sure your mobile phone is charged and waterproofed.
1.3 Navigation Equipment:
- Ensure that navigation equipment such as GPS, charts, and compasses are in working order.
- Double-check that all necessary navigation lights are functioning properly.
1.4 Personal Safety Equipment: - Life jackets: Have enough properly fitting life jackets for all passengers on board. Make sure they are easily accessible and in good condition.
- Throwable flotation devices: Keep a throwable device, such as a ring buoy or a throw bag, within reach.
- First aid kit: Stock a well-equipped first aid kit with essential supplies.
- Fire extinguishers: Maintain the correct number of fire extinguishers and ensure they are in good working condition.
1.5 Communication Devices:
- VHF radio: Invest in a marine VHF radio to communicate with other boaters and emergency services.
- Whistle or horn: Keep a sound-producing device to signal for help in case of an emergency.
2. Safety Equipment:
In addition to items mentioned in the boat safety checklist, several safety equipment should be on board:
2.1 Anchoring Equipment:
- Anchor: Carry a suitable anchor and sufficient anchor line to secure the boat in case of engine failure or emergency situations.
- Anchor buoy: Attach an anchor buoy to mark the anchor's location, providing a clear indication of where the boat is secured.
2.2 Visual Distress Signals:
- Carry approved visual distress signals, such as flares or signal flags, to attract attention in case of emergencies.
2.3 Bilge Pump:
- Ensure that a reliable bilge pump is on board to remove excess water from the boat.
2.4 Navigational Lights:
- Install and maintain proper navigation lights to ensure visibility and prevent collisions, especially during low-light conditions.
Boats Marine Supply play a vital role in the boating and maritime industry, serving as a one-stop shop for all the needs of boat owners and marine enthusiasts. These stores specialize in providing a wide range of products and services essential for smooth sailing, maintenance, and safety on the water.
The primary aim of a marine supply store is to ensure that boat owners have access to high-quality equipment, tools, and accessories. Whether you are a recreational boater, a professional fisherman, or a commercial mariner, these stores cater to all your specific requirements. They typically stock an extensive inventory comprising marine electronics, navigation instruments, safety gear, fishing equipment, boat maintenance supplies, water sports gear, and much more.
Marine supply stores are known for carrying products from renowned brands and manufacturers in the industry. This ensures that their customers can rely on the durability and functionality of the items they purchase. From state-of-the-art radar systems to life jackets and from marine paints to fishing reels, these stores have everything needed to enhance the boating experience.
One of the significant advantages of shopping at a marine supply store is the expert advice and guidance that customers receive. Employees in these stores are often experienced boaters themselves and possess extensive knowledge about various products and their applications. They can provide valuable insights, recommend suitable products based on individual needs, and offer troubleshooting assistance when required.
Additionally, marine supply stores often provide essential services like boat repairs, installations, and maintenance. Whether it's installing a GPS system, fixing electrical issues, or conducting routine maintenance checks, they have skilled technicians to ensure that boats are in prime condition for use on the water. Many stores even offer rental services for equipment like kayaks, paddleboards, and water sports gear, allowing customers to explore new activities without the need for purchasing.
With the rise of e-commerce, marine supply stores have also expanded their reach through online platforms. This allows boat owners to conveniently browse and purchase products from the comfort of their homes. Online marine supply stores often provide detailed product descriptions, customer reviews, and secure payment options, making the buying process efficient and reliable.
In conclusion, marine supply stores are essential for boat owners and enthusiasts alike. They offer a wide range of products, expert advice, and essential services to ensure the safety, functionality, and enjoyment of boating experiences. Whether shopping in-store or online, these stores facilitate the smooth operation of vessels, making them a crucial pillar of the marine industry.

thoughts from the night before departure
I can’t quite believe that tonight is my last night in this country for a while. Moving to Tilburg has always felt so distant and now the day is finally here, my mind can’t comprehend it. The thought of leaving behind my life - yes, only for a year - is daunting, but surprisingly enticing. I have so much to explore and look forward to and I can only hope this journey will allow me to grow and heal and evolve. I will be leaving so many amazing individuals behind, the country that cultivated my childhood and the places that have forged my entire existence up until this moment. That is both terrifying and utterly thrilling. In fact, after two arduous, exhausting years at university, this escape provides a very-welcomed refuge. This new start will hopefully be the beginning of a new period of peace and prosperity - which rather aligns with something my dad said to me the other day: ‘a change is as good as a rest’.

What I’ve Been Reading
30 August 2018
So this post is a bit different from what you would expect from a study abroad blog, but seeing as a need something to fill the time before I leave, I figured that I could share some of my favourite things I read this summer with you!
Crazy Rich Asians Series by Kevin Kwan
This is the book series of the moment! I started reading the first book last summer when I heard they were making a movie, determined to read it before it came out.... flash forward a year and I was 50 pages from the end when I saw the movie. It was actually kind of nice to be left in suspense, as both the book and movie endings - while different - were surprises! As I write this post, I’m listening to the movie soundtrack and I’ve already seen the movie twice! Being half-Chinese, this movie was extremely extremely important to me as a form of representation (as is the next book series and subsequent movie) and it was an amazing movie and book series. If you’ve only read the first book because of the movie, I highly recommend reading the next two books (I actually like the second book, China Rich Girlfriend, the best. I’m currently half-way through the last book, Rich People Problems, and I plan on reading it this weekend at the lake). The books are hilarious and I can’t wait until the movie sequel!
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Series by Jenny Han
Speaking of books that are very important in terms of Asian-American representation... here is my favourite book series of all time, which I re-read for probably the third or fourth time this summer. I first stumbled upon the first book, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, in high school and found the perspective of half-Korean, romantic, dreamy, old-fashioned Lara Jean extremely relatable. Lara Jean would rather stay home and hang out with her family than go out to high school parties - she bakes, crafts, and is romantic to the point of writing love letters to all of her old and current crushes (never intending to send them, that is - of course, them being anonymously sent out is the beginning of the first book). This summer, Netflix released a movie adaptation of the first book, spurring my re-read. The movie has gained a big online following, and rightly so! I’m so glad that young Asian-Americans can see themselves represented on screen, especially in romantic comedies like To All the Boys and Crazy Rich Asians. Since I am vastly unarticulate when it comes to my feelings, I thought that I would instead share a piece by Tanya Chen about Kimberly Yam’s emotional reaction to Crazy Rich Asians, which conveys a lot of my feelings about the movie - you can find it here.
Anna and the French Kiss Series by Stephanie Perkins
I flew through this series at the very beginning of the summer, so I can’t really say much about the plot to each book except that each one follows a different character on their way to love. It’s an extremely cute book series and a definitely romantic and easy beach read!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
Another book I really tore through in anticipation of the movie! I read this book in a day when I was in Ohio for a week, and I cannot recommend it or the movie enough. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a big sucker for romances, and this book is no different. Written as a series of letters, the format is one I have never liked in the past. But the charm of this book - and it’s main character, Juliet Ashton - really changed my mind about the style. Set in 1946 after World War II, the book follows Juliet and her correspondence with the inhabitants of Guernsey (which was occupied during the war). I won’t say anything else to spoil it, except that the movie stars Lily James, Michiel Huisman, Jessica Brown Findlay, Matthew Goode and Penelope Wilton, so if you like Downton Abbey you will definitely like this movie! (and book, as you can use your imagination to picture these amazing and beautiful actors in their roles, as I did)
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda & Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (also known as the Creekwood Series? According to Goodreads.com)
It seems as though a theme in my reading has emerged... I may read books that have been turned into movies, or are soon to be turned into movies. I think there’s something about having a cast that allows me to imagine the book better or at least I’ll use that as my excuse! Anywho, these two books (in the theme of representation) are amazing LGBTQ+ representation for both gay and bisexual characters. Scarce is media that represents, let alone says the word, bisexuals, so I really enjoyed Leah on the Offbeat (this is a random offshoot, but if you want to see some a fun, light, and happy show that gets an A+ in representation, watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine!). Prayers for a movie about Leah!
Suitors and Sabotage by Cindy Anstey
Last summer, I read two other books by Anstey - Love, Lies and Spies and Duels and Deception - and loved them, so I just had to read her new book, Suitors and Sabotage. All of her books have Jane Austen-y heroines set in the Georgian Era, which was a big draw for me. The heroines are charming, the mysteries intriguing, and the love interests dashing. I can’t recommend these books enough and I’m super excited for her next book, Carols and Chaos, that comes out in October of this year. Another quick note, the publisher, Swoon Reads, does a lot of cute and romantic YA books, so if you’re into that (like I clearly am) I recommend taking a scroll through their website. (Her book covers are so pretty that I had to include them all here!)
I read many more books but these were my favourites! We’ll see what I come up with for my next post!
Cheers :)
Helena
