Romano-British Burial Site Unearthed in U.K.

Archaeological research on a 16-acre site in the Fens approved for housing, has uncovered a Romano-British burial site from 2,000 years ago.

Part of the cemetery comprised in excess of 20 burials, with a mix of cremation and inhumations.

“The cemetery had been in use for a long period of time with evidence of later interments cutting earlier ones,” said a spokesperson for Cambridge Archaeological Unit.

“The cemetery would have been associated with the Roman settlement previously excavated to the west of the current excavations.”

Archaeologists also unearth an early Bronze Age barrow- a burial monument, mostly used for cremations, and reserved for local dignitaries of the time.

The spokesperson said the Early Bronze Age barrow was constructed as a single circular ‘ring-ditch’.

It was surrounded by a central cremation that had been placed within a Collared Urn pottery vessel (2350 - 1600 BC).

“And over which a soil mound would have been built and flattened in antiquity,” said the spokesperson.

The image released by the Cambridge archaeologists shows the excavation of the ring-ditch in 2m intervals, “while the square in the centre of the image is where the cremation urn was excavated”.

Cambridgeshire County Council says the area was subject to an archaeological evaluation in 2011 during which evidence of Iron Age settlement and Bronze Age funerary remains were found.

The council described these earlier finds as being of a of local and regional importance.

But they felt “construction impacts are deemed able to be mitigated by a suitable archaeological investigation programme that will conserve their significance”.

The original archaeological investigation in 2011 was commissioned by Whiteacre Management Ltd, the property development firm run by March businessman Bruce Smith.

The work formed part of an earlier application for the site which finally won approval to become a country park, business park and Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Only after Sainsbury’s pulled out, and an unsuccessful High Court breach of contract was lost, did Mr Smith look for an alternative use for the land.

Part of the site has now been granted permission for Aldi to build a supermarket and for David Wilson Homes to build 203 homes.

During a field survey in 2011, 372 items were collected including eight fragments of pottery pre-dating the Post-Medieval period.

But evidence of Early Bronze Age activity and research offered the possibility of some pottery fragments dating back to the Romano-British period.

One of the conditions to the planning consents now agreed is for suitable recording of all archaeological remains.

It is thought up to £400,000 in total has been spent on archaeological research into both the current applications and the previous application which at the time covered nearly 80 acres.

First Week in Boston

As you can tell from the title, I have survived my first entire week living up North. Was I worried about this? Yes! I was very nervous about getting kidnapped and whatnot. But I have come to realize that everyone who told me that Northerners weren't mean were actually right.

In my very first honorable blog post I figured I would make it light and talk about what I have done this week and even some culture shocks I have experienced as a southerner living so far North.

I am thirteen hours from my comfort zone because I got the wonderful opportunity to work with Harvard Graduate School of Education or HGSE (which alumni pronounce as 'huggsy'). I am interning at this institution for eight whole weeks! So far I have been introduced to many lovely faces who have been nothing but welcoming. I have also been introduced to two of the projects I will be helping with. Due to these projects not being public yet, a lot of the details around what I am working on will not be mentioned in this blog. Once I am given permission, I will go deeper into what I have done to help with these project launches.

But what I CAN tell you is I am working in such a healthy and dedicated work environment full of great people. The two projects I have worked on are focused around familiarizing communities and families with the terms "social emotional learning (SEL)" and "culturally responsive teaching (CRT)". We are working inside and outside of the schools to build this group understanding of what these terms really look like when they are appropriate practiced, either in the classroom or in your living room! A certain school we are working with is a low income all girls school that ranges from grades Pre-K to 6th grade! For a lot of people, especially the ones back home in the south, they would argue that those ages are too young to be talking about topics like racism, sexism, and other prejudice that come along with SEL and CRT (not critical race theory don't freak out y'all). BUT these ages are not too young. That is one of the main points why HGSE working with these ages! Our reasoning is if children these ages can EXPERIENCE racism, sexism, and other prejudices then their counterparts that don't experience are not too young to learn about it.

Some culture shocks I have experienced here are:

1.) People honk their horns ALL THE TIME! They don't even wait a full three seconds at stop lights and such to blare their horns. Also, people don't blink an eye at it, it's just acceptable behavior. In the south you barely hear people honk unless it's serious.

2.) Restaurants on nice days open their windows! There are options of seating where you can sit right on the street view and have conversations with anyone that walks by because the window is completely gone! I find it a bit awkward but I did talk to a little boy and his father one morning so that was a sweet encounter.

3.) The movies are not lying about how much construction goes on in the city, all the sirens from ambulances, cops, and firetrucks, and how you can hear EVERYTHING from your window if you live in town like I do. Saturday nights are always the busiest especially since I live across a bar (that has a bouncer!). You hear everyones music, their laughs, and even their arguments. It is safe to say though this past weekend was a little wild because of how the Celtics championship game went on. Celtics lost by the way...

4.) It might not be all Northern states but Massachusetts is very eco-friendly! There are recycling bins everywhere, they charge to use plastic bags so you better bring your own, and at certain places to eat when you order a bole of water they come in aluminum bottles instead of plastic.

5.) Massachusetts is pretty clean for the most part, at least in Cambridge it is. I was a little shocked to see how little the homeless population is here too. I mean this was a great shock! I know there is a homeless population in Kentucky but you don't really have much contact with it unless you live in the few big cities that KY has to offer. And big city in the south is totallyyyyy different than big city up north.

I will end this with some weekly unsolicited advice. Anxiety is what keeps us from walking straight into traffic, sure. But anxiety should never keep you from doing bigger things. It is worth it to trust your gut and ignore all of that anxiety you may have, trust me.

Micronesian astronomy, ecological knowledge, ocean navigation:

From the people of Kiribati, this is a Micronesian “sky dome", featuring the paths of 3 important stellar entities: Pleiades, Antares, and Rigel. [Source: David Lewis. “Voyaging Stars: Aspects of Polynesian and Micronesian Astronomy.” 1974.]

All of this environmental knowledge was historically transmitted from generation to generation exclusively through oral tradition, storytelling, navigator apprenticeships, etc.

-- “The star compass of the Caroline Islands has 32 named points on most islands, marked by the rising and setting position of stars,” meaning that the differing and reciprocal stellar bearings on separate islands must be individually memorized through personal practice.

-- Historically and into at least the late 20th century, “laypeople” and teenagers in Kiribati could identify and name, from memory alone, over 770 stars; this is recounted in Maud Makemson’s firsthand accounts from Kiribati communities in “The Morning Star Rises: An Account of Polynesian Astronomy.”

-- The navigator Hipair, in 1969, twice made accurate landfall after traveling alone and unaided across 720 km of open ocean between his home island and Saipan; Hipair’s nautical and astronomical knowledge had been the product solely of oral tradition, and his voyages were successful despite how traditional navigation had not been practiced by his community in over 3 generations. -- Some Micronesian navigators can/could accurately direct voyages of 800 kilometers, or 3200 kilometers if aiming for an archipelago, as recounted in Lewis’ “Voyaging Stars” and Ben Finney’s “Myth, Experiment, and the Reinvention of Polynesian Voyaging.”

-- People of Kiribati maintained some of the most sophisticated star maps, utilizing a so-called “sky dome” map scheme which functioned as a “nautical almanac” according to Lewis. Apparently, the mythology of Kiribati was especially intertwined with wayfinding and voyaging; the concept of the sky, referred to in many other Polynesian societies as some kind of analogue of “heaven,” was known in Kiribati instead as um ni borau, “roof of voyaging.”

-- Some prominent temple sites include the Maori observatories Koro-riwha-te-ao and Koro-riwha-te-po, oriented to view solar halos at sunrise. The royal temple of Fa’anui on Bora Bora was historically maintained by “chiefs of the yellow girdle” who donned the golden tapa cloth, which took its golden color from Capella, the distinctive golden crown of the Auriga constellation. Similar constructions, also observing the sunrise’s solar halos, also occur in Micronesia.

-- Pleiades is important. In the Ryuku Islands, currently administered by Japan, intact pre-modern hilltop observatories are oriented towards Pleiades. Acronical rising of Pleiades around 16 November in the temperate South Pacific would mark the arrival of tuna season in Tuamotu, Gambier, Society Islands, and Rapa Nui; alternatively, the heliacal rise of Aldebaran in the tropics signified the beginning of the breadfruit growing season.

Chapter 1: Family Feuds

Mum (4:20 PM): He doesn’t mean it, Julian. You know what your father’s like.

Jaskier (4:21 PM) …

Jaskier types out several replies and then deletes them repeatedly. He sits in the empty courtyard of the college grounds and stares into the middle distance. Three hours ago his father discovered that he was at risk of being kicked out of university; the conversation hadn’t been a pleasant one. Tempers frayed. Cruel words were exchanged. Mainly from Pankratz Senior’s end, even though Jaskier could hold his own after all these years of scathing dismissals and savage rebukes. His mother - beautiful, innocent soul - was now stuck in the middle of a feud between her husband and son. A feud that was as old as Jaskier himself. Or so it felt like. She didn’t deserve this.

So, Jaskier unlocks his phone again and reopens the message.

Jaskier (4:32 PM): I know, Mum. Don’t worry. I won’t drop out.

Mum (4:38 PM): I love you, Jules. Remember to use the FaceTime with me on Sunday. I miss you. xXx

Jaskier smiles and presses a kiss to his phone screen, because he misses her too. He hasn’t been home since the summer and it’s now late January. Even then, it had been a fraught six weeks with Jaskier and his father being repeatedly under each other’s feet. The arguments had, at times, almost become physical. It was a relief to return to Cambridge in September, even if Jaskier now had to face the possibility that his extremely expensive private education could potentially come to nought. He blamed it on the degree. Politics and International Relations. His father’s idea, of course. The foreign diplomat who wanted his son to follow in his footsteps.

Jaskier’s entire future had been mapped from the very beginning. His entire career. Even who he should marry if murmurings behind closed doors were to be believed. A life as a civil servant. Two and a half kids. Nice mid-victorian detached house, with high stone walls to keep the riff-raff out, and a hound called Biffer. Fuck that. Jaskier was going to do his time, shove his guitar in its case and then travel the world. Not as an emissary though. An aid worker and a singer. Volunteer work, dreadlocks and copious amounts of weed lay in his future. Just needed to pass this damned degree.

He rises to his feet and grabs his bag to head back into his dormitory. He promised Triss they would meet for pre-drinks before. They were going to the ADC Theatre to watch the Footlights. Triss was trying to convince Jaskier to join - “You’re so talented, Jas! You’d be so-o-o good.” - but how could Jaskier measure up to the likes of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie? Former Footlights members went on to rule the media world. He enters the foyer of his housing block, huffs a deep sigh and forces a smile onto his face.

When he steps into Triss’ room, already crammed with at least fifteen other people, he’s greeted with a roar of welcome and a lukewarm can of Fosters is pushed into his hand. It’s going to be a good night.

“Your dad is going to kill you.” Triss giggles as she looks at Jaskier’s options form. Because of his lacklustre academic record, the university had asked him to take another module. The good news? The options were broad. They didn’t care what it was. He just needed to pass. So, obviously, the module called ‘Love and Conflict: An examination of poetic constructs through the ages’ was the default choice. Besides, Triss is halfway through her medicine degree and she’s decided to take it with him, because she obviously doesn’t have enough work to do. These ambitious, hard-working types baffle Jaskier so very thoroughly.

Jaskier grins. “What he doesn’t know won’t kill him - or me, as you have quite rightly pointed out,” he pauses, then folds the form carefully and tucks it into his pocket. “I just need to pass this fucking degree. Besides, I’ve heard the Professor’s PhD student is quite a dish.”

Triss facepalms. “Jas. Seriously? You’ve opted to take a module because the assistant is meant to be hot,” she pauses and squints into the middle distance, sipping at the can of diet coke in her hand as she does. “Wait, wait! I think I know who you mean.” She places a hand over her mouth and then grabs his shoulder. “Tall, dark and handsome, but has a scar running down the right side of his face. Apparently he’s ex-special forces. Yes, yes, yes. When we did plastic and reconstructive surgery, he came in and gave a talk about all the procedures, how he was injured, and recovery. He was - yes, well. Don’t go trying to flirt your way to a good grade.”

Jaskier looks wounded, hand placed over his chest, mouth agape in theatrical shock. “Me? Flirt? How very, very dare you. I shall pass this module using my natural wits and intelligence, thank you very much.”

Triss laughs and wraps an arm around his shoulders to give him a squeeze. He likes Triss. He likes her a lot. They met at the orchestral society on campus - she played the violin and, predictably, was fantastic at it - and they had struck up a friendship based, initially, on laughing at how serious everyone else was about it all. They’d decided to drop out of the society in favour of less stringent pursuits, but their friendship had held fast. Her bright red hair, her dash of freckles and her hazel eyes gave her the appearance of someone who was permanently, irrevocably happy. Life was good to Triss, and she was determined to give it her all in return.

She’s also very - annoyingly - perceptive, and leaves her arm in place. “You’ve had another argument recently, haven’t you?”

“Just a little one,” Jaskier smiles, big and bright, but it doesn’t fool her. She raises her eyebrows, and he’s forced to come clean. “Yeah. It was pretty big. Phrases like ‘don’t bother coming home’ and ‘you’re no son of mine’. Big stuff. I don’t really give a shit, but I wish he wouldn’t scream it loud enough down the phone for mum to hear.”

“He sounds like such a prick,” she murmurs, then glances at him apologetically. “I mean, I know he’s your dad…”

“Oh, no, he’s a prick. World class. If there were an olympic games dedicated to being an asshole, he’d top the medal table every time,” he nudges his head against her shoulder. “Still can’t convince you to come home for dinner and let me pretend I’ve managed to bag myself a highly intelligent girlfriend with loads of prospects?”

She pulls a face, but presses a kiss to his cheek. “You know full well I’m not your type, and, while you’re gorgeous, you’re not mine either,” she leaves the bench now and shoulders her bag; she has a lecture on biomechanics and it starts in fifteen minutes. “You still up for the party tonight? Streggie says it’s BYOB.”

“Does he really have to use his D&D name? I mean, it’s embarrassing enough.” Jaskier pulls a face right back, overdramatic and warped, Triss laughs. “Fine, yeah. I’ll be there. I can totally make a nine o’clock lecture and stay awake through it. Especially if this PhD student is as good looking as everyone says.”

Jaskier sprints down the hallway in search of the lecture theatre, ends up at the wrong end of the damn building and has to backtrack. He’s fifteen whole minutes late. The party had been good. The company had been better. Waking up under two very attractive people, one of which really did have the nicest cock he’d ever had the pleasure of seeing , had been very pleasant. Except when his silenced alarm blared at him. With 8.45am on the clock. Fuck. Right. Found it. He tests the door handle, gives it a wiggle and then stumbles through. Loudly. The lecture theatre was packed, and he trips down the first few steps, and finds a seat at the very edge. The girl next to him grumbles and kicks her bag onto the floor.

The professor is in full swing. Fuck. What’s the poem? He did an English Literature A Level, but that all feels like a distant memory after a year and a half at university. Oh, Sonnet 18. He knows this one. Right, Mac out. Onto Moodle. Get the notes. Fuck. Wifi’s not working. It’s at this point that a large hand places a small pack of notes right next to his own. It appears so suddenly out of nowhere that he startles and the girl next to him huffs irritably again. Jaskier looks up with wide eyes into a handsome face framed in a mess of black hair; there’s a scar knotted through the corner of his lip on the right side, only visible as he turns and Jaskier can see that it travels all the way up past his right eye.

The PhD student.

The scar is quite something , but somehow not distracting. Older than Jaskier expected. Maybe late thirties, early forties at the most, with shoulders you could just hang off and a chest that challenges his smartly pressed button-down shirt. His eyes are the most intense hazel that Jaskier has ever seen, the colour of honey, with flecks of green at the edges. He’s so entranced, that when the man speaks, he startles again.

“You’re late.”

His voice is low and it carries down the row of people next to him; Jaskier is inspected by a number of disgruntled faces that all glance his way. But he doesn’t notice, because that voice had just settled so far inside his chest that it’s still rumbling away like distant thunder. The sheer presence of the man. Just being near him felt like sinking into a warm bath. Jaskier swallows, and stumbles through an apology. “Yes, sorry, I - uh - I got lost.”

“He notices. Don’t be late again,” he dismisses the excuse out of hand, and then glances at Jaskier’s laptop. “The password is different.” He extends a hand to ask permission and Jaskier gestures at the machine with open palms. Instead of picking the laptop up, he leans over and Jaskier’s nose is suddenly filled with the scent of his aftershave; it’s musky, and warm, and Jaskier tries to cover another quick sniff with a sigh. Holy fuck .

“Done. He doesn’t record his lectures,” the assistant growls again. “If you’re late, you miss it. I only print out a handful of his slides, so you’re lucky no one else arrived late before you.” And with that, he was walking down the aisle, glancing at a few students who had surreptitiously opened Instagram; he even stopped right beside one and folded their laptop down. Usually they didn’t care as long as your ass was in a seat. The student turns to protest - entitled and bratty as most nineteen year olds are - locks eyes with the bear of a man and mumbles through an apology.

Jaskier is still staring at that broad back with an open mouth when he catches Triss’ eye. She’s halfway down the lecture theatre and looking back at him with a cheeky glint in her eye, mouth open in an amused, knowing smile. He gives her a sassy flutter of the hand and gathers the notes towards him. The names of the two teachers are on the front. Professor Gerald Daniels and… Eskel Cirillo. Eskel. That is… unusual. But then, Jaskier goes by a name he adopted in private school when he and his buddies thought it’d be funny to learn Polish so they could talk openly about smuggling alcohol and weed onto campus without worrying about the teachers noticing. And, of course, they’d all adopted code names.

“His name’s Eskel, ” Jaskier says before sipping at the beer in his hands. He and Triss met up for lunch, as they usually did, and obviously it was gone 12 o’clock, so alcohol was on the cards. “What kinda’ name is that?”

“Not his real one. His real one is Esben Kelepios Cirillo,” she smirks, smug that she had managed to conduct such swift reconnaissance. “His mother is a Greek national, his father is English.”

“How? How do you know this?”

She flushes and looks slightly ashamed. “I may have dug out his medical records and had a little peek.” She flinches. “Please don’t tell anyone. I’d be in so much trouble, but I saw the way you were staring at him, and I got a little bit excited.”

“I was not staring. I was - he told me off, I was glaring. I was glaring at him. This isn’t secondary school. I’m not some wayward teen late for my A Level English class.”

“You are nineteen until June. So, technically - .”

“Ssshh. Just because you’re an old lady.”

She gasps in mock offence. Triss has been studying for five years; she’s twenty-three, so hardly classed as old. “Well, I see someone is feeling a little stroppy today.”

“I don’t suppose you saw how old he is, did you?” Jaskier casts her a quick sideways glance. Age isn’t usually a problem for him. The oldest woman he’s bedded must have been nudging her mid-forties. She was one seriously hot cougar though, and he’d never been ridden like that since.

“Thirty-eight. He was medically discharged from the army four years ago,” she pauses, and fiddles with her drink bottle. “It’s - I can’t really tell you too much, sorry Jas. It’s - it would be unfair.”

“Oh, it’s fine. I understand.” He reaches across and ruffles her hair, before returning to his drink. “I’ll just have to ask myself. Won’t I?”

The historian Mostafa Abdel Hamid el-Abbadi in his personal library in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2012. He developed plans to revive the ancient Great Library of Alexandria.

Professor Abbadi’s dream of a new library — a modern version of the magnificent center of learning of ancient times — could be traced to 1972, when, as a scholar at the University of Alexandria, he concluded a lecture with an impassioned challenge.

It was President Richard M. Nixon who blew wind into the sails of Professor Abbadi’s ambitious proposal. When Nixon visited Egypt in 1974, he and President Anwar el-Sadat rode by train to Alexandria’s ancient ruins to observe their faded grandeur. When Nixon asked about the ancient library’s location and history, no one in the Egyptian entourage had an answer.

In 1988, President Hosni Mubarak laid the foundation stone for what would become the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a $220 million seaside cylindrical complex. Designed by the Norwegian firm Snohetta, it comprises a 220,000-square-foot reading room, four museums, several galleries, a conference center, a planetarium and gift shops.

It opened in 2002, hailed as a revitalization of intellectual culture in Egypt’s former ancient capital, which is now its often neglected second-largest city.

“With the founding of the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina,” Professor Abbadi wrote in 2004, “the ancient experiment has come full circle.”

The professor did not share fully in the glory. He, like other scholars, had been critical of some aspects of the finished library and maintained that the builders had been careless during the excavation, unmindful of the site’s archaeological value.

When the library was officially opened, in a ceremony attended by heads of state, royalty and other luminaries, he was nowhere to be seen. He had not been invited!

Mostafa Abdel Hamid el-Abbadi was born on Oct. 10, 1928, in Cairo. His father, Abdel-Hamid el-Abbadi, was a founder of the College of Letters and Arts of the University of Alexandria in 1942 and its first dean.

Mostafa el-Abbadi earned a bachelor’s degree with honors there in 1951. A year later, he enrolled at the University of Cambridge on an Egyptian government scholarship. He studied at Jesus College under A. H. M. Jones, the pre-eminent historian of the Roman Empire, and earned a doctorate in ancient history there in 1960.

Two years before, in Britain, he had married Azza Kararah, a professor of English literature at the University of Alexandria, who had earned her doctorate at Cambridge in 1955. She died in 2015.

Professor Abbadi’s book “Life and Fate of the Ancient Library of Alexandria,” published in 1990 by Unesco and translated into five languages, continues to be widely cited by scholars.

In that book, one of several he wrote or edited, he blamed Julius Caesar for the ancient library’s destruction, countering one politicized narrative that holds Arabs responsible.

In interviews and papers, Professor Abbadi asserted that although it was not the world’s first library, it was the first universal library, housing an estimated half-million texts from many countries and in many languages, including Aristotle’s works and original manuscripts by dramatists like Sophocles.

“He was without doubt the doyen of Alexandria,” Dorothy Thompson, a Cambridge fellow and honorary president of the International Association of Papyrologists, said of Professor Abbadi. “He made Alexandria known in the English-speaking world in the 20th century.”

In 1996, he was elected president of the Archaeological Society of Alexandria, founded in 1893. He lectured throughout the world and received many academic and government honors.

In an email, the biographer Stacy Schiff, author of the acclaimed “Cleopatra: A Life,” cited the novelist Lawrence Durrell, author of the tetralogy “The Alexandria Quartet,” in writing of Professor Abbadi. “Every bit the representative of what Durrell called ‘the capital of memory,’” she said, “he seemed to hold whole civilizations in his head.”

When the library opened in 2002, Professor Abbadi donated a rare 16th-century copy of “Codex Justinianus,” the codification of Roman law under Justinian I in the sixth century A.D. It was one of the first books to sit on the new library’s shelves. Before his death, the professor donated his and his wife’s roughly 6,000 books and academic papers.

Yet during the construction and afterward, he found the project wanting. “We have a great name, fortunately,” he said of the library in an interview with The New York Times in 2001. “The challenge is living up to it.”

He found the library’s book collections for students inadequate. And the construction, in his view, had been done without proper archaeological surveys and excavation, even though the site was in what was called the palace quarter in the era of the Ptolemaic kings.

Standing on the balcony of his apartment nearby, he videotaped bulldozers digging up historical artifacts and plunking them into the sea.

“The ensuing scandal forced them to stop work and permit an emergency salvage archaeological dig,” Max Rodenbeck, then the Middle East bureau chief of The Economist, recalled.

Sure enough, a large mosaic of a sitting dog, from the second century A.D., was discovered at the site. It is now in the library’s antiquities museum.

Professor Abbadi had persuaded the Egyptian authorities to establish that museum, an endeavor that took him to dusty government storerooms and archaeological sites as he built out the collection. In a Luxor crypt that had not been opened in three decades, he stumbled upon ill-preserved wooden funerary boxes from King Tutankhamen’s tomb.

He also raised money to acquire hundreds of volumes of texts from early Christianity.

Yet the government did not invite Professor Abbadi to the library’s official opening, apparently because of his criticism of the project.

“No Egyptian newspaper mentioned his name at all,” said Prof. Mona Haggag, a former student of his and head of the department of Greek and Roman archaeology at the University of Alexandria. “It became the project of the presidents, of the people who cut the rope, the people who stood on the front stage, and not of Mostafa el-Abbadi.”

As his “Life and Fate of the Ancient Library of Alexandria” was distributed among the guests at the event, he passed the day in his own library, at his home overlooking the Mediterranean.

Professor Abbadi, a Cambridge-educated historian of Greco-Roman antiquity and the soft-spoken visionary behind the revival of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, died on Feb.13, 2017 in Alexandria. He was 88.
