LGBTQ America: A Theme Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer History—chapter 09. Sexual and Gender Diversity in Native America and the Pacific Islands by Will Roscoe. (final)
Two Spirits Today: Renewal and Change
The section starts and continues by discussing two-spirit activism and cultural renewal being fostered by two-spirits and lgbtq native people. One such event is the intertribal powwows such as the Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits Powow which in 2015, drew over 2,000 attendees (09-12). Attendees were asked to define two-spirit, the answers varied; “two spirit means being born with a male and a female spirit”, while another said that the term is “more of a historical reminder that before colonization all of our tribes had multiple genders” (09-12)

Two Spirits in the History of the United States
Tumblr media
The author then tells us about four individuals who by our modern standards would be considered two-spirit, all of whom led incredibly fascinating lives. Most of them faced violence and prejudice in their lives. And this remains true for two-spirits today—the author mentions a young two-spirit Navajo named Fred Martinez Jr. who had been bullied and was murdered in a hate crime in 2001.
(Rest in Power, relative...)

Conclusion: History Matters
“Two-spirit/LGBTQ history not only challenges stereotypes and transforms prejudice, it provides the path to self-esteem, empowerment, and community for two-spirit-LGBTQ native people, while the stories of two-spirit males and females in American history teach us all about sexual and gender diversity and the ways in which these differences make distinctive cultural and historical contributions” (09-29)

their was a guy in my class who was high functioning and he would literally sexually harass literally everyone boys and girls everyday whether it was showing them porn trying to trick ppl into looking at cp or pretending to masturbate in class and whenever anyone complained to teachers or staff they’d immediately give him pity and tell ppl he’s autistic so it’s ok, and the thing is he would laugh after hearing this, like he knew full and well he could get away with it and that he wasn’t getting any repercussions, during one of our classes we did like a circle powow whatever and i was standing next to my friend and he was on the opposite side of her and ran his hand down her hair / back and i cursed him out for it and got in trouble bc “oh he’s autistic” when so am i. like so am i. and i’m not harassing people, he had a level of recognition where he knew what he was doing was bad, and he only stopped doing that shit around me when i yelled at him in the middle of class for trying to convince ppl to look search cp and idk it just pisses me off so bad. if someone doesn’t have the cognitive ability to understand right from wrong / is unable to not harass ppl they shouldn’t be allowed to just do whatever / be without a guardian, and this is completely different than ppl that struggle with social cues im talking about actual predators using their disabilities to an advantage

Anyone talking about how "kosher" is used to mean "clean" or "good" in non-Jewish and non-food context is really weird? Like. On par with saying "powow" instead of "meeting".
Like a thief gets his friend a new car and he says "No worries. It's kosher." To mean he bought it legally and with clean money. Or a lawyer gets the judge to sign a warrant and he says "No worries. It's kosher." To mean that he got the warrant cleanly and didn't have to do any shady shit.
Idk. It's obviously problematic from a non-Jewish perspective. But also the literal thinking part of me hears someone saying "the agreement was kosher" to mean "everything was above board and by the books" makes me go "So you didn't slather you steak in cheese?"
"The contract was kosher."
"Great. So you didn't slather the contract in chicken and eggs before signing it. Good, because I'm allergic to eggs."
Or
"The warrant it kosher."
"I mean, if a police officer was involved... I think there's kosher rules against pig..."
I think this is why people didn't like me growing up. I think they thought I was being intentionally dense or some shit with this. No, your saying just doesn't make any sense.

Oh yeah
Europeans will say they're not racist and then tell someone they need to have a "powow"
And then just huddle together and discuss something

Support local native artists!!!!!! Especially if you're into taxidermy, bead, and leatherwork. My best pieces are either Inherited from my family or from Local native business! Honestly the most peace of mind you will get knowing furs and such are ethically sourced.
I've seen some talk recently in Therian spaces about ethical fur sourcing and one of the taxidermists listed (CrowfoxCurios) lists one of their many fur sources as Native Americans. Why not also support Natives directly? Especially if you live near a reservation!!!!
Also don't be afraid to attend local Powows! Depending on the event some local Native artists of that tribe will be selling!! They're also amazing to watch!!!!
