Northtown Maintenance-of-Way, part 3
For the final part of this mini-series, I'll be focusing on a few miscellaneous, specialized machines used in the track maintenance process. Each one's role can be done by other, less specialized machines, but it would be a good deal harder.
This is a Mineral Products Inc. Multi-Purpose Machine. It's a mechanical jack of all trades, used for everything from trenching to blowing snow off of tracks. Its most common use is as a 'yard cleaner': the big broom mounted to the front picks up material between the rails and loads it onto a conveyor belt, which can dump it off to the side or into a towed railcar. Another popular job is snow removal: the broom is exchanged for an auger system, and the rear-most conveyor can be replaced with an impeller fan and chute. MPI's website says the machine can move 2000 pounds of snow per hour, and the blower can fling it up to 150 feet away from the tracks. Because it's not limited to just the rails, it can also be used on yard roads & parking lots. Other attachments include a trencher, air blower, rotary broom, and a hydraulic arm which can be fitted with its own range of attachments. I'm starting to sound like a shill here... but it is a pretty cool piece of kit.
The next piece of machinery is Herzog's ACT, or Automated Conveyor Train. It's a special set of cars which uses a conveyor system and swinging boom to "precisely" drop ballast where it's needed. The yellow thing seen above is the train's main power unit. I don't know if it uses hydraulic or electric motors, but this car powers them. Each train set has up to 30 cars, which are just high-side gondolas with conveyors in the bottom. Each car has its own conveyor, which dumps into the next car's conveyor through a small hopper.
A closer look at the connection between cars. I don't know if the water is from recent rains or the train's dust suppression system.
And here's the 'front' of the train, which is really the end. It features the operator's cabin and the most important bit, the unloading arm. It can move ballast 50 feet from the center of the tracks, according to Herzog's website. Conveyor trains like this one are mostly used for filling in washed-out track beds, but can also strategically place piles of ballast for future projects. As of writing this post, the control car is still less than a year old. It really is the cutting edge of ballast-dropping technology!
The last machine is another Herzog product: the creatively-named Rail Unloading Machine. It looks complicated, but is actually quite simple. A crane arm feeds sticks of continuously-welded rail (CWR) into a roller system, which feeds it forward (backwards, really) through two clamps and onto the ground.
A view of the other side. Same deal, but all folded up. Check out the flex on that arm!

By automating and streamlining material handling, businesses can experience greater productivity, reduced labor costs, and improved safety. This article delves into the various facets of bulk handling systems, their benefits, and how they can revolutionize manufacturing processes.
What Are Bulk Handling Systems?
At their core, bulk handling systems are a network of equipment designed to manage the movement of bulk materials in a manufacturing or processing environment. These systems encompass a wide range of technologies, including conveyors, elevators, pneumatic systems, and silo storage units, all working in concert to ensure materials flow seamlessly from one point to another.
The importance of bulk handling systems lies in their ability to move large quantities of materials quickly and efficiently, often without the need for manual intervention. In industries where time is money, having a reliable and fast system in place can significantly improve production times and reduce the risk of human error.
Components of Bulk Handling Systems
The design of bulk handling systems varies based on the nature of the materials being handled and the specific needs of the manufacturer. However, there are several common components that are integral to most systems:
Conveyors: These are used to move materials along a predetermined path, often in a continuous manner. Conveyors can be belt-driven, screw-driven, or even operate on rollers, depending on the type of material being transported.
Elevators: Bulk elevators are designed to lift materials vertically. This is particularly useful when dealing with bulk materials that need to be transported to higher levels or stored in silos.
Pneumatic Systems: Pneumatic conveying uses air pressure to move powders or granular materials through pipelines. This is ideal for handling materials that are prone to contamination or those that need to be kept dry.
Silos and Hoppers: These storage solutions are essential for holding bulk materials before they are processed or shipped out. Silos are typically used for long-term storage, while hoppers are used for short-term storage and dispensing.
Dust Collection Systems: As bulk materials are moved, they can often generate dust, which can pose a risk to both safety and air quality. Dust collection systems, including local exhaust ventilation systems (LEV), are installed to capture and remove harmful dust particles from the air.
The Benefits of Bulk Handling Systems
The advantages of implementing a bulk handling system in manufacturing are multifaceted. For industries where materials need to be moved quickly and efficiently, these systems offer considerable benefits that go beyond just speed and productivity.
Increased Efficiency and Reduced Labor Costs
By automating the movement of bulk materials, businesses can drastically reduce the amount of manual labor required in the production process. Employees no longer need to manually move materials from one area to another, which frees them up for more valuable tasks.
Additionally, the automation of these processes reduces the risk of errors and ensures that materials are handled in a consistent manner. With fewer people involved in material handling, the risk of accidents or workplace injuries is also significantly lowered, making the manufacturing environment safer.
Enhanced Safety and Compliance
Safety is a key consideration in any manufacturing environment. Bulk handling systems can improve safety in several ways. First, by reducing manual labor, workers are less likely to be exposed to dangerous tasks, such as lifting heavy loads or working in hazardous conditions. Second, bulk handling systems are often equipped with safety features, such as emergency stop buttons, sensors, and alarms, that can quickly address any malfunctions or accidents.
Moreover, many bulk handling systems are designed to comply with industry standards and regulations, ensuring that businesses remain compliant with safety and environmental requirements. For instance, the use of a well-maintained LEV system can ensure that harmful dust is efficiently removed from the air, preventing potential health hazards and meeting regulatory guidelines.
Optimized Inventory Control
A crucial element in manufacturing is the management of raw materials. With bulk handling systems, businesses can improve their inventory control by ensuring that materials are stored and moved in an organized manner. Automation systems can track the flow of materials, providing real-time data on inventory levels, usage, and storage. This data can then be used to predict when new materials are needed, reducing the risk of stockouts or overstocking.
Improved Product Quality
For industries that process sensitive materials, maintaining quality standards is paramount. Bulk handling systems can help ensure that materials are handled gently and consistently, reducing the risk of contamination or damage. For example, pneumatic conveying systems, which are gentle on materials, can prevent the degradation of powders or fragile substances, ensuring that the quality of the final product is maintained.
Scalability and Flexibility
Another key advantage of bulk handling systems is their scalability. As manufacturing demands grow, bulk handling systems can be easily expanded or adapted to meet the changing needs of the business. Whether it’s adding more storage capacity with additional silos, increasing the throughput with additional conveyors, or implementing more advanced dust collection systems, bulk handling systems can be customized and scaled up to accommodate growth.
The Role of SEPCOM in Bulk Handling Systems
Incorporating a reliable system for handling waste and byproducts is also critical to a comprehensive bulk handling solution. SEPCOM is a specialized system designed to separate solids from liquids efficiently. It plays a crucial role in bulk handling operations that involve wet or semi-solid materials, such as in the food and beverage industry or chemical manufacturing.
SEPCOM systems use advanced separation technology to extract solid materials from liquid streams, ensuring that waste is properly disposed of or repurposed. By implementing a SEPCOM system, manufacturers can reduce waste, optimize resource use, and enhance the sustainability of their operations.
How to Ensure Optimal Performance of Bulk Handling Systems
While the installation of a bulk handling system can deliver substantial benefits, it’s crucial to ensure that these systems are properly maintained and regularly updated. One important aspect of bulk handling system maintenance is the installation of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems. These systems remove harmful dust and airborne particles, preventing workplace hazards and promoting a healthier environment for employees.
Furthermore, regular LEV testing is essential to ensure that the system operates efficiently. Testing helps identify any issues or inefficiencies in the system, allowing for timely repairs or upgrades. Routine maintenance of conveyors, elevators, and other components of the bulk handling system is also essential to prevent downtime and maintain consistent performance.
Conclusion
Bulk handling systems are a critical asset in the modern manufacturing landscape. Furthermore, workers can safely access high sections on a construction site, such as an upper story on a building’s front, using this aerial lift. Both articulating and telescopic boom lifts are available.
BULLDOZER
COLD PLANER
A cold planer is an asphalt and concrete milling machine. A conveyor belt system transports the ground asphalt up from the drum when the machine grinds the asphalt on a road or other surface. Moreover, the operator follows a dump truck near enough that the loose asphalt falls into the back of the truck.
COMPACT TRACK AND MULTI-TERRAIN LOADER
A compact track loader and a multi-terrain loader are both small loaders, but on most construction sites, they are powerful workhorses. These compact loaders make it easy to transfer materials around a construction site. Attachments can do a variety of tasks. Furthermore, the undercarriage of a compact track loader is great for more harsh situations, whereas the ground pressure of a multi-terrain loader is lower, making it a safer alternative for more delicate surfaces.
COMPACTOR
A compactor is a machine that compresses and reshapes soil, gravel, or asphalt surfaces. As a result, they are a great asset in road construction and other construction projects. Compactors are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. A plate compactor, which works similarly to a lawnmower, is one of the most frequent types. The vibrating base plate evens out the surface beneath it. A road roller is another typical form, which is a vehicle with a big revolving cylinder that compresses the ground beneath it.
DRAGLINE EXCAVATOR
A dragline excavator is a huge piece of machinery that is great for deep excavation. This machine has a long boom with a suspended digging bucket at the end. The bucket is controlled by a system of ropes and chains. Some dragline excavators are small enough to transport to a job site, whereas larger dragline excavators, such as those great in strip mining, are on-site. However, these draglines can weigh tens of thousands of tons.
DRILL RIG
A drill rig may not be present at every construction site, but it is a necessary component of any well. A drill rig can assist you in gaining access to subterranean water, oil, or natural gas. Drilling rigs come in a variety of sizes. A derrick is the tall structure you see, but there are several more parts that work together to drill into a substance. Augers, small drilling rigs that a single worker may operate manually, are on the other end of the size spectrum.
DUMP TRUCK
A dump truck is a truck with a huge box bed on the back that is great to transport items to and from building sites as well as move materials about. The operator can use hydraulic rams to elevate the front end of the truck bed and dump the goods inside. This makes it simple to dispose debris to a landfill or construction site. Some dump trucks are excellent to be drive on the road, while others are good for navigating rough terrain.
EXCAVATOR
Another common piece of construction equipment, an excavator, is utilized for a number of activities. Inside a 360-degree rotating cab, an operator sits. This is why an excavator is sometimes referred to as a 360. The cab is mounted on top of a track-based undercarriage, while some excavators have wheels. At dig, lift, and perform other tasks, operators utilize a bucket attached to the end of a stick and a boom that extends from the cab.
FELLER BUNCHER
In logging and land clearing activities, a feller buncher is a useful asset. A feller buncher is made out of a cab that is mounted on tracks or wheels and has a boom attached to it. This may sound like an excavator or other similar machinery thus far. The major feature that distinguishes a feller buncher is the feller buncher head at the boom’s end. This equipment wraps around tree trunks and uses a chainsaw to cut the tree down at the base before putting it elsewhere to be taken away.
FORKLIFT
Forklifts are commonly found in warehouses, but they may also be found on construction sites because they assist with many types of material handling. A forklift resembles a compact automobile in appearance, having a mast, lift cylinder, backrest, and carriage at the front, as well as prongs extending forward from the cab’s bottom. These components enable you to lift and transfer objects, such as brick pallets, from one side to the other. Forklifts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each suited for a specific application.
FORWARDER
A forwarder, like a feller buncher, is a useful piece of forestry equipment. A forwarder transports logs to a loading site, whereas a feller buncher chops down trees and places them in a pile. This piece of machinery is essentially an off-road vehicle with eight wheels and a log-carrying device that keeps logs just above the ground so they don’t drag. A forwarder is distinguished from a skidder, which drags trees on the ground. The size of logs that a forwarder can transport is limited.
FRONT-END WHEEL LOADER
Wheel loaders are one of the most versatile pieces of construction machinery. These loaders, as the name implies, move about a job site on wheels. A bucket is the default attachment, and it can scoop up, transfer, and unload things. Other attachments, such as augers, backhoes, and rippers, can be used to assist with a range of jobs. Wheel loaders are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from little to large, allowing you to select the model and accessories that are best suited to your needs.
GRADER
HARVESTER
A harvester is a forestry machine that is used to harvest logs. Operators utilize this machine’s large cab and associated arm to clear areas and grab wood. A specific attachment on the arm’s end aids in the cutting, processing, and debarking of trees. Harvester attachments are designed to fit a variety of tree sizes for optimum versatility.
KNUCKLEBOOM LOADER
Another instrument for logging is a knuckleboom loader. A knuckleboom loader takes over after a forwarder or skidder has deposited logs at a loading location to load the cut and stripped logs onto a truck and transport them to their final destination. This loader is a swing machine with a crane head that is specifically intended to pick up logs and load them into a truck quickly and efficiently. A knuckleboom loader’s cab can be attached to a trailer or operate on wheels or rails.
MANLIFT
The phrase “manlift” can refer to a wide range of aerial lifts, including boom lifts, scissor lifts, and more. A manlift, on the other hand, is a device with a power-driven belt that only goes in one way and is used to convey personnel from floor to floor, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Because they travel up and down rather than side to side, these are also known as vertical personnel lifts. They’re usually made to transport only one worker at a time.
MIXER
A mixer is a truck with a huge drum that mixes concrete in the building industry. To mix the components and make wet concrete, the operator just adds dry cement, aggregate, and water to the drum and rotates it. A spiral blade on the inside of the drum aids in mixing. Some vehicles are specifically designed to mix concrete, but you may also acquire mixer attachments or stationary mixers to use on a job site.
MOBILE CRANE
A mobile crane is an exceptionally handy piece of lifting and moving equipment. These cranes have wheels or tracks, as the “mobile” part of their name implies, so you can drive them around a construction site, especially if they’re all-terrain models. The hoist mechanism, which has a hook at the end to hold objects, is usually moved by hydraulics in most cranes. Some mobile cranes can spin 360 degrees, making narrow spaces even easier to navigate.
PAVER
An asphalt paver, or paver for short, is a machine used in the construction of roads and other comparable projects such as parking lots. Typically, asphalt is continuously fed into the paver’s hopper, which is placed at the front of the machine, by a dump truck. This helps the paver to evenly distribute the asphalt on the desired surface. A small roller on the paver compacts the asphalt, but a road roller is still needed to pack it down and smooth it out even more.
PILE DRIVER
A pile driver is a necessary piece of equipment for deep foundation work. A crane extends a boom in a standard pile driving technique. A lead, a frame for aligning the pile, a hammer, and a pile are all attached to the boom. Pile driving equipment raises a pile before driving it into the ground to the desired depth. Deep foundations require this type of support.
SCISSOR LIFT
SKID STEER LOADER
A skid steer loader is a four-wheeled piece of construction equipment that is flexible and compact. Its name comes from the fact that skid steer operators must utilize differential steering, which is a technique in which one side of the vehicle propels forward while the other is lock, causing the equipment to skid in the right direction. Moreover, skid steers have a large turn radius thanks to this steering system, making them ideal for maneuvering in confined locations. A skid steer can be equip with a variety of work tools.
SKIDDER
A skidder is comparable to a forwarder in terms of function. The fundamental difference between a skidder and a forwarder is that skidders drag trees along the ground and can often manage a wider range of tree sizes.
