Julie and the Phantoms Song Recs: McFly Songs that are Sunset Curve/JATP Coded
So, McFly are a big British pop/rock band that have been around since 2003, and are still releasing music and touring at the time of writing in 2024. I saw them perform live in 2023, and loved it. 💖 That tour was to celebrate the release of the most recent album (at the time of writing) - Power To Play - and listening to that album immediately gave me Sunset Curve vibes, and then I subsequently realised that they had been making Sunset Curve/JATP-coded songs throughout their whole career. 🥺💖
Edit: So, McFly are really popular in Brazil, and they released a song with popular Brazilian band Fresno in 2023 as part of the Power To Play album - Broken By You... and I've just discovered that Fresno actually had a cameo in Julie e os Fantasmas (the original Brazilian show that Julie and the Phantoms was adapted from) in episode 3, so this whole post has gained a lot more validity in a '6 degrees of separation' kind of way 😍👏
youtube
I wanted to make a list of songs that I could see Sunset Curve/JATP performing/recording for their potential albums, some that just remind me of the boys, and some fun gems in between - these are all my personal preferences/opinions, so you may think differently, but here is the current tracklist in no particular order. (All with YouTube links of varying quality since a lot of the music videos/live performances give Sunset Curve/JATP vibes too IMO. All [except one] of these songs are also on Spotify etc.):
🎶 God of Rock & Roll (link here) (Screams Sunset Curve for me)
🎶 Where Did All The Guitars Go? (link here) (Also screams Sunset Curve for me)
🎶 Air Guitar (as McBusted with Busted) (link here) (Always reminded me of when the boys realised that people could see them play with Julie)
🎶 Ghostbusters (Live cover of song by Ray Parker Jr.) (link here) (On Youtube, but sadly not on streaming) (Maybe a bonus/hidden track on the album or they would exclusively play live at the gigs - I couldn't not share it because it's awesome from start to finish, and the boys would totally cover it as a joke 👻Also, imagine the boys getting the crowd to do call-and-response with them - iconic 😍)
🎶 I'll Be Ok (link here) (Gives me vibes of the boys helping each other through their crappy family lives in the 90s 🥺)
🎶 Five Colours In Her Hair (link here) (The song written during a jam session - the boys just having a laugh)
🎶 Make It Out Alive (link here) (As soon as I first heard this, the angst and melodrama of the song gave me vibes of the boys being cursed and under Caleb's control at the HGC 🥺)
🎶 Route 55 (link here) (A song all about friends having a great time together during an endless summer)
🎶 Don't Stop Me Now (Charity single cover of Queen) (link here) (They would have totally covered Queen during their jam sessions - respecting some of the best but putting their own fun spin on things 😂)
🎶 Transylvania (link here) (This song always gives me HGC vibes - so gothic and melodramatic, and Dougie's vocals in the chorus?? 😍)
🎶 Party Girl (link here) (Such a guilty pleasure song of mine~ This music video is slightly NSFW since it contains clips of the band's infamous vampire-themed short film that they all starred in 2010 to promote their album at the time [which even the band realise was a bad idea in hindsight, since it was clearly riding the Twilight wave]... but! Listening to this song also gives me ideas for a possible evil Julie possessed/controlled by Caleb - maybe sometime I will write them down~ 👀)
🎶Tonight Is The Night (link here) (A spiritual sequel to I'll Be Ok in my mind - when the boys realise that they're not really okay and need to ask for help to process all the shit that has happened to them - think what Luke went through in Unsaid Emily [and what we presume Alex and Reggie would go through in subsequent seasons] and the boys helping each other through it 🥺)
🎶 Too Close For Comfort (link here) (The obligatory break-up song on an album, and this performed live is everything - just heartbreaking 🥺)
🎶 Umbrella (Live cover of song by Rihanna) (link here) (Julie gives the boys a lesson in popular music during the 25 years that they've been dead, and they decide to surprise her with a fun rock cover of Umbrella to cheer her up one day)
🎶 The Heart Never Lies (link here) (The dramatic love song on an album that is really about the band's bond and sticking together through thick and thin)
🎶 Falling In Love (link here) (The love song that has a music video full of tour footage, which always make me think of the boys in Sunset Curve absolutely loving playing for a crowd, and the bridge/quiet part of the song giving the vibe of Julie, Luke, Alex and Reggie cherishing the moment at the end of Stand Tall before the boys cross over 🥺)
🎶 One For The Radio (link here) (The defiant song for everyone who dismissed Sunset Curve and JATP - I could imagine this as a song written in response to either record companies who wouldn't sign Sunset Curve/JATP, Bobby/Trevor or Caleb. It also gives me vibes of the boys appearing back onto the stage of the Orpheum to perform Stand Tall with Julie - defiant celebration)
🎶 Lies (link here) (The break-up song that gives me vibes of the boys standing up to Caleb. Also is it just me, or does Tom [you can see him at around 0:43 in the video] give Luke vibes in his styling? 😍)
🎶 Forever's Not Enough (link here) (The true love song that Luke writes for Julie, but will never admit that it's for her because he makes the lyrics vague enough 💖)

The former One Direction will perform in Chile on May 24 at the Bicentenario Stadium in La Florida with his "Faith in the Future" tour. We talked exclusively with the British star who went from being a teenage pop idol to a professional soccer player, and finally to consolidating his own more mature and rocking sound. This is the successful present of the artist who loves to sing as much as he loves to play ball.
Dove Couple
Monday, April 8, 202408:10 am
[Translated from Spanish]
In 2022, Louis Tomlinson stepped on Chile for the first time alone to present his debut album "Walls". A bet that exceeded any expectation, because the madness was such that the British, that the former One Direction filled the Movistar Arena three times.
But that was not all, his fans had prepared a surprise for him that, as he confessed to La Cuarta, gave him "goosebumps." During the chorus of the song "Kill my mind", the young women organized themselves to coordinate the lights of their cell phones, creating a kind of mesmerizing wave, leaving the singer and his team speechless, so much so that the moment was recorded in his documentary "All of Those Voices". Moreover, the photo of one of those concerts was nothing more and nothing less than the poster.
But the music that makes him vibrate so much was not always his first choice in life. In 2013, just when the One Direction world tour that brought them to Chile was announced with two concerts at the National Stadium, Louis signed a contract with the League TwoDoncaster Rovers team, and only in 2017, two years after the group took an indefinite break, he was able to debut as a substitute in a match witnessed by more than five thousand fans.
“It's really an honor to be in the club where I spent most of my childhood," he wrote at the time on his Twitter account. However, the boy's dream stagnated when in 2020 and in the middle of the pandemic, he decided to launch himself as a soloist. All of his former bandmates had done it; it was his time.
Thus Louis - whom we recognize with nostalgia, familiarity, and a psychological interest - became one of the most important artists of his generation, adding milestones such as a billion streams on Spotify, numerous awards and being in the Guinness World Records book for breaking the record for the most watched live broadcast concert of a male soloist.
"I FEEL VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE THAT LOVE HERE"
On the day of the interview with the newspaper, we arrived at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel where the interpreter stayed two days after a successful presentation at Tecate Pa'l Norte 2024 in Mexico, and a promotional step through Brazil. Despite the fatigue, he maintained a good attitude with the press, but mainly with his crowded fans outside the venue, who shouted his name from time to time.
Being in front of a pop idol who has spent half of his life on tour, in conferences and with a handful of iconic songs that marked more than a generation, is truly intimidating, but Louis makes anyone lower their guard because he welcomes you as if he were your friend. Wearing a pair of relaxed jeans, black t-shirt and sneakers in tune, he smiles and greets us in a friendly manner. Although he is surrounded by people who make up his team— overwhelming— but this is his natural environment; and thus begins a dialogue with La Cuarta about his two passions.
Q: Louis, you return to Chile in May after filling three arenas on your last visit, something historic! What will it be like to return with that powerful precedent?
Louis: I feel like my Spanish is coming back! I almost knew what you were asking (laughs). I'm very excited, I feel very lucky to be able to perform in an enclosure of that size in my... well, technically on my second solo tour. I feel very grateful to have that love and passion here. I'm mainly very excited about these shows.
Q: In several of your "Faith In the Future" songs, you talk about nostalgia, changes and the passage of time. Are they topics that you think about frequently or only arise when composing?
Louis: Yes, I would say that I am a little bit of a deep thinker. I think it helps me as a songwriter, but I also think that nostalgia is a great thing to write about. It’s a great topic to feel as a listener and also to write as a songwriter. And I'm also interested in psychology, so anything that makes the brain feel in a certain way, I think it's interesting.
Q: What would the 32-year-old Louis with a successful second album under his arm and a new tour say to the teenager who applied to The X Factor in 2010?
Louis: I would insist that he should do it. I think there is definitely an element, in every young person in that situation, there is something very terrifying that makes you want to start. But I would also tell you, what I have learned the most, to trust your instinct, trust that feeling and be brave to make decisions, the right decisions for yourself.
Q: Among those decisions is to be the last 1D member to make your solo career, and today we are here with "Faith In The Future" that sounds 100% yours. Looking back, how do you see the path has unwinded?
Louis: I feel very comfortable. The mentality I have now feels very different from the one I had when I started this trip as a soloist. I feel very blessed to be able to continue making music. But it's also a very nice feeling and it's something very new for me to feel so comfortable on stage and so comfortable when I'm making the music I want to make. In general, yes, I am very happy.
WHEN CHILE DRISTLED HIS SKIN
Q: Louis, I imagine there must be some time in your career when you said, wow, I did it!
Louis: You know, I used to resist that idea, ‘cuz for whatever reason, I don't know, I never wanted to give myself that, I suppose… my brain. But I have, I have started trying to have those moments more for myself. It often happens on the live show. It can be something that fans did together, like some kind of fan project. But also, even when I played the festival just now, in Mexico, that was one of those moments. I was kind of nervous going out there, and the audience was so vast, but people seemed to be having a good time. So yeah, it was great.
Q: Now that you mentioned the fan project, when you came to Chile, your followers prepared one for the song "Kill My Mind" that was beautiful. How did you experience it from the stage?
Louis: I had no idea that was going to happen! I know that fans often do their own little fan projects, in a way of doing something fun for me and something unique at every individual show, but I didn't know what to expect. And to be honest, that— literally gave me goosebumps, it was such an incredible spectacle. And, again, like always at these shows, and especially in Latin America, you’ve not got like ten people giving it a go, everyone in the room is participating! It’s a very euphoric thing for me to see from the stage.
Q: Changing the subject, football is one of your passions, what place does it occupy in your life today?
Louis: I would say that definitely, before I was in the band, nothing came close in my life, football was my IT. Now music is. I absolutely love football, but for me nothing comes close to music. Obviously it's my job, that's important, but as a fan, I'm talking more like a fan, I probably don't watch enough football these days, I'm usually busy, but I catch up with the "highlights" (the most important moments of the game). It's still a big part of my life, especially when they play in England. I'm excited for the next European Championship. We're going to win it!
Q: Of course! [England] is the parents of football. Finally, what makes you happiest today?
Louis: The family, definitely, the family and friends. And specifically in my work world. It's live concerts. That gives me amazing feelings.

Sound System Culture Mini Festival
Sunday 15 September 2024
Review by Gopal Dutta
It’s a rainy September afternoon in the centre of Huddersfield, and I’m on Wood Street for the Sound System Culture Mini Festival, part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days programme.
The street transforms into a vibrant, colourful space where everyone is welcome. Gazebos shelter the Zion Inna-Vision Sound System, alongside several stalls catering to the daytime crowd who have braved the showers. There’s face-painting, vegan food and cakes, cards, and books on offer. Rainbow-coloured bunting flutters in the wind, the whole scene giving me that “festival” vibe despite the poor weather.
In the glowing, cave-like atmosphere of the Northern Quarter bar, a steady stream of people take their seats around the large pull-down screen that has been especially set up, and an air of expectancy pervades the air. “Filling up nicely,” says Professor Julian Henriques, visiting from London to present a programme of documentaries commissioned by his research unit, Sonic Street Technologies, at Goldsmiths University. Every seat is soon occupied, and more attendees line the walls or sit on the steps, eager to share in this collective experience. The distant siren from the outdoor sound system blends into the indoor atmosphere, merging the worlds of film and reality.
Introducing the first film, a fascinating documentary about Gabre Selassie and the formation of the Kingston Dub Club, Julian acknowledges the importance of Huddersfield in reggae history, mentioning the legendary Venn Street nightclub and declaring that “Huddersfield in the 80s was the epicentre of reggae in the UK.”
The film programme is an excellent whistle-stop tour of the current landscape of sound systems around the world, taking in Jamaica, India, Colombia, Brazil, Australia, and finishing, with a poetic circularity, in South Africa. All of the films highlight reggae music’s power as a force for self-empowerment, community building, and as a social safety valve.
Throughout the screening, more people continue to file into the venue. Each time the door opens and closes, you can hear the outdoor sound system and the lively Brazilian drums performance by Grupo de Gringos Percussion.
As the films end to a warm applause from the audience, we are at standing room only, with a diverse mix of young and old, a wide range of races and cultures represented—Huddersfield’s diversity in all its glory.
The scene inside mirrors what’s depicted on screen inside: a dimly lit, atmospheric room with a diverse crowd, food, and drink being served. The team have done a great job recreating the vibe of a dub club.
As the energy from the films flows out into the street, the same heavy bassline fills the air, with people chatting, dancing, laughing, eating, and drinking, with DJ Andi G on the decks and Marshall on mic duties.
Eventually, the sun makes an appearance, and over the next few hours, more people arrive, swaying to reggae bassline. The free entry means many passersby pop in, drawn by the sweet music and vibrant atmosphere. Conversations flow, with strangers bonding over their shared love for the music, their faces lighting up as familiar tracks play. There is a collective cheer as Marshall exclaims, “We don’t want no rain no more,” echoing the crowd’s mood.
Riddim Master from Ras Ambassador Sound System then takes control of the decks, delivering an all-vinyl set that opens with Rod Taylor’s unmistakable "His Imperial Majesty" and the warm crackle of dub. Next up is Bigga Puss from Shakatone Esquire Sound System, warming up the crowd with a seamless selection of ska, rocksteady, and roots. As the familiar tones of “Kunta Kinte Dub” by The Revolutionaries fade in, a moment of recognition sweeps through the crowd. Finally, the legendary Papa Burkey, pioneer of the Earth Rocker Sound System from the 80s, takes over, keeping the energy high as the dancing continues, alongside Ras Sis Highness and Dee Bo General on the mic.
Well done to the event team for creating such a vibrant festival, much-needed entertainment in the heart of Huddersfield.

10 To Watch : Mayors Edition 61019
RICK HORROW’S TOP10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 10 : Mayors Edition
with Jacob Aere
Media companies are "taking advantage of a growing audience and advertiser interest in women’s sports," particularly with this year's Women's World Cup. Bleacher Report CEO Howard Mittman said that through its B/R Football vertical, the company has "booked more ad revenue" from the Women's World Cup than the men’s tournament last summer, with revenue at a level that is "10% higher." Mittman said that Bleacher Report’s advertising clients for this year's World Cup "includes Adidas, Hulu, Nike, PlayStation and Volkswagen." A spokesperson for Fox Sports told Digiday that advertiser interest in the tournament has "grown considerably" since the last Women's World Cup in 2015. The spokesperson "declined to say how much ad revenue Fox Sports expects to collect" from this year's tournament. Top sponsors for Fox Sports' coverage this year "include Coca-Cola, Volkswagen, and Verizon.” In 2015, Fox Sports reportedly generated $40 million in ad revenue, which was "more than double the initial estimates" of $17 million and was driven by the U.S. squad winning the tournament.
Deep in a Stanley Cup Finals battle, the St. Louis Blues have announced an agreement with local healthcare company Centene Corporation for the naming rights to their new ice center in Maryland Heights. The ten-year agreement, which will see the new building named the Centene Community Ice Center, ensures that the company’s branding will feature on signage, marketing and communication elements at the facility, which will be used as a practice home for the Blues. The venue, which is scheduled to open on September 7, is a $78 million project funded through a public-private partnership with support from the City of Maryland Heights, St. Louis County, and the State of Missouri. The project is part of St. Louis Blues’ Hockey STL 2020 campaign, which aims to bring the local community together through ice hockey. The facility also highlights a renewed effort to engage more youth in ice sports. In addition, the facility will serve as a multi-purpose venue for concerts, festivals and other events. Clearly, advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals has boosted the Blues’ value proposition and marketability.
While some major league teams balk, the MiLB Iowa Cubs proactively expand netting. According to the Des Moines Register, team President and General Manager Sam Bernabe said the Cubs plan to extend the nets all the way down to both fouls poles for the start of next season. The move has been in the works for quite some time now, but the precautionary measure has become a national subject after Chicago Cubs outfields Albert Almora Jr. laced a line drive into the stands that hit and injured a young girl. The incident has prompted plenty of debate about whether more protected netting needs to be added to ballparks. As far as Bernabe is concerned, it’s not a debate. It will happen at Principal Park. Bernabe said his organization has been talking about making the move long before the scary situation occurred in Houston. Netting around parks reentered the forefront of the baseball safety conversation last week after Almora’s line drive into the stands. It’s great to see some clubs taking the matter into their own hands before the more cumbersome decision – often involving collective bargaining – is made at the major league level.
When it comes to social media valuation, the Los Angeles Lakers’ jersey patch sponsor Wish was the most valuable during the 2018-2019 NBA season. According to Cynopsis Sports, GumGum Sports, a division of GumGum that provides an AI-powered measurement platform enabling brands to assess value across linear, social and streaming vehicles, estimated that Wish earned nearly a $9.3 million value, up from $4.9 million the prior year. Benefiting from the presence of LeBron James, Wish displaced Goodyear, which held the top jersey patch the prior season for The King’s former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. “Next to Nike’s apparel sponsorship, the jersey patch is the biggest sponsor location in arena on social media,” said GumGum Sports general manager Brian Kim. “It’s worth noting that due to the variety of factors we use to calculate value – clarity, prominence, visibility, size, placement, and share of voice – still images actually generated 86% of the overall social media compared to 14% for video.” Look for these numbers to increase exponentially in the next few years.
Recently retired North Carolina State University director of athletics Deborah Yow will be honored on June 11 as the recipient of the 53rd James J. Corbett Memorial Award, the highest honor one can achieve in collegiate athletics administration. The award is given at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention. Yow, a past president of the organization, will also be recognized as a 2018-2019 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year. "During her time as a coach and an administrator, Debbie has positively impacted tens of thousands of student-athletes, and everyone involved in NACDA is fortunate she chose that administrative path," said Bob Vecchione, NACDA CEO. “Nearly 20 years ago while serving as NACDA president, Debbie orchestrated the creation of the association's mission statement, which reiterates our core value of education. As an English major, she has always exhibited that educational mentality throughout her entire career." Yow, who wrote the chapter “Operationalizing Philosophy and Values While Building a Culture of Integrity and Excellence,” in our Sport Business Handbook, has written many articles and books on athletics management and human behavior.
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said that the conference "will distribute" $38.8 million in revenue to each school, up from nearly $36.5 million last season, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Big 12, by having Oklahoma and Texas in New Year's Six bowls, "gained an additional" $6 million. The figure "puts the Big 12 behind the SEC and Big Ten," and "ahead of the ACC and Pac-12." Unlike other Power 5 conferences, the Big 12 total "doesn't include third-tier rights, which can range from a million or two" to the ESPN-Longhorn Network deal that averages $15 million. West Virginia President E. Gordon Gee said that by the time the conference's TV contract with ESPN and Fox expires in 2024-2025, revenue distribution could reach $44-45 million. The Oklahoman noted most Big 12 schools "make little money on third-tier rights." But the conference has signed with ESPN+, which will place events on a "bigger platform, though that is not expected to produce immediate financial results." In reality, the Big 12 is in much better financial standing than anyone thought when conference realignment was discussed yet again about five years ago.
World Surf League will become “carbon neutral” by the end of the year, promising to pay for environmental projects to counteract the extensive emissions its employees and athletes generate during their global tour. According to SportsPro, the WSL also will cut back on event production at stops with low attendance, cut disposable plastic and change its business structure to reduce executive travel. Carbon neutrality is a tall order at WSL, whose 2019 championship tour touches all six continents and remote Tahiti over 11 stops. Staff and athletes in 2018 took 6,300 fights, accounting for 97% of its emissions. The carbon offsets and other initiatives are a significant expense, but business efficiencies will cut costs over time, and CEO Sophie Goldschmidt says they believe the environmental projects can generate sponsorship revenue as well. The WSL has attempted to make ocean conservation a key pillar of its identity. The projects WSL will contribute to include a peat swamp forest in Borneo that fights deforestation; a wind farm in Brazil that powers 400,000 homes; a wilderness conservation in Kenya; and a protected redwood forest in California.
Minor League Baseball announced the official launch of MiLB Pride, the largest documented Pride celebration in professional sports, as part of the organization’s diversity and inclusion initiative. Nearly 70 MiLB teams will host Pride Nights or events this season. MiLB Pride events will include teams holding LGBTQ-themed nights, incorporating Pride into scheduled promotions, providing discounted tickets to LGBTQ organizations, and/or engaging with the LGBTQ community both in the ballpark and beyond. Additionally, some teams are giving back to their local communities by donating a portion of ticket sales to LGBTQ non-profit organizations in their area. The national platform includes teams forming partnerships with more than 150 local LGBTQ organizations across the country. Those alignments include MiLB’s national partnerships with You Can Play – an organization that advocates for equality and respect for all who connect with sports, regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity – and Pride Tape, according to Cynopsis Sports, “a badge of support from teammates, coaches, parents and pros to young LGBTQ players and fans.” Once again, MiLB proves to be a trendsetter among pro sports leagues.
FanDuel will donate to the Women’s Sports Foundation for goals by Team USA. According to Tullahoma News, FanDuel is offering a range of fantasy contests for the Women's World Cup. FanDuel will also contribute $1,000 to the Women’s Sports Foundation for every goal Team USA scores during the tournament, in addition to a $10,000 initial donation. The Women’s Sports Foundation is dedicated to ensuring all girls and women have equal access to sports and physical activity, and the tremendous life-long benefits they provide. To celebrate the Women's World Cup and Team USA, FanDuel is partnering with Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles two-time Pro Bowl tight end and husband of U.S. Women's National Soccer Team superstar Julie Ertz. Ertz will be entering several daily fantasy contests on FanDuel throughout the tournament. FanDuel is also offering a brand new soccer game style where users can pick seven players (four forwards/midfielders, two defenders and one goalkeeper) with a $100 salary cap. In a play that mixes philanthropy and gambling, FanDuel has stepped it up to support women’s sports.
Oakland mayor donated Game 4 NBA Finals tickets to charity auction. According to CBS 5 San Francisco Bay Area, Warriors fans bid on a ticket to what could be the final Golden State Warriors game at Oracle Arena ever while supporting a good cause for a seat donated to a charity by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. Schaaf offered up one spot for a fan to accompany her in the city’s suite at the game, “even if you are a Raptors fan.” The proceeds will go to the Oakland Promise, a charity initiative aimed at ensuring all children in the East Bay city graduate from high school fully prepared to succeed in college through programs and scholarships. Even though the Warriors ended up losing the game, the lucky fan saw a precious game at Oracle Arena – pending a sixth game, it will be the last one the Warriors play in the stadium as they now find themselves trailing 3-1 in The Finals.

Populism will become the primary political strategy in the 2020’s. Populism itself is defined as a political strategy that appeals to common people who believe that their concerns are disregarded by the establishment elite. While populism flourished in the 1930’s, I believe it will rise again and dominate world politics just like it did then. If I had wrote this ten years ago, it would have been much harder to lay out cohesive points with evidence and reason like I can now. In the last decade, we have seen a radical transformation in world politics, from the old establishment figures to new populist firebrands that shook the system to it’s core. During 2016, we saw the rise of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. While these two figures are political opposites, they, and their supporters, share many of the same attributes. Both Trump and Sanders are populist figures who grew authentic movements that pushed back on the establishment. They both promised their supporters they would destroy the establishment and put power into the hands of the common man. While their supporters generally dislike each other, they are the most similar major political groups that exist in the US. Both groups have radical ideas and have a devotion not to a party, but a singular figure. Both groups argue with passion and rely on emotional connection rather than statistics to get their points across. Another monumental similarity is the anger which both groups hold. While the anger may be directed at different things, the feeling that is felt by the MAGAs and the Bernie bros is red hot anger. One of blessings of the 2016 election was the ability to see what would happen in all sorts of “what if” scenarios. For starters, a billionaire, TV personality won the presidency, the establishment camps of both parties lost, in albeit, different ways, and the first major socialist movement in the US took off with Bernie Sanders. I believe the biggest difference in the campaigns of the Sanders and Trump was not the policies, but the way in which they were received by the establishment. Initially, Trump was not only hated by the establishment, his presidential run was debated on whether or not it was a joke! Trump did not receive good treatment like some of the other Republican nominees until later in the run, after he had gained a group of die hard, vocal supporters. Bernie’s story was similar, if less extreme, as he was generally ignored and labeled a crazy socialist early into his presidential run. Like Trump, as time went on, Bernie collected young, passionate followers who dominated much of the left wing discourse. The similarities split however, when the Republican party belatedly embraced Trump, while the Democratic party sought to sabotage Sanders. In my opinion, when this fundamental shift happened, the election was over, Trump was going to win. Ultimately, he did win in one of the greatest political upsets of all time. While many were surprised, I wasn’t. The presidency of Trump was made possible because of the unique era in which it took place. During 2016 we were riding a wave of a new political energy. Like I said, the two biggest candidates were very much unlike the normal establishment politicians such as Jeb Bush or Joe Biden. They were firebrands and icons, where their opponents were career politicians that presented a polished, manufactured aesthetic. More important than their aesthetic were their movements, the populist, with a motivated organic following, versus the establishment that uses billions of dollars to prop up an astro-turfed movement that lacks substance. While it was hard for populists to gain traction In the past, by 2016 we were increasingly moving into a new era in American politics, one motivated by emotion and grievance, rather than rhetoric and statistics. Fast forward to today, we are seeing this trend fully manifested. We are in the middle of an election, where a very similar phenomena is happening right before our eyes. On one side, we have the populist Trump, with a 97% approval rating within his own party and an extremely devoted base. On the other side, we have the neutered Bernie movement and the presumptive establishment nominee Biden. It seems that the Democrats are making the same mistake they did in 2016, by snubbing the grassroots Sanders campaign and picking the deeply establishment Biden for their nominee. It is clear statistically and anecdotally, that the excitement for Biden does not exist. The supporters of Bernie not only believed in his message but also believed in him as a man. This was very apparent when Bernie dropped out, only to have massive portions of his base basically pledge allegiance to him and vow to punish the Democratic party but either voting third party or not voting at all. Due to these same mistakes, Trump will win again easily in 2020 and if the democrats don’t change their strategy, they will have serious problems in 2024. While the focus has been on American politics, this trend of populism and tribalism has not been exclusive to the Union. All across the world we see the same political trends happening and we see the same strategies being used. Everywhere from President Modi in India, Boris Johnson in the UK, Bolsonaro in Brazil and Viktor Orban in Hungary, we see traditional post war politics be pushed aside for something that is both ancient and new. The 2010’s saw the birth of this new political wave, but in the 2020’s it will run it’s course. The 1920’s saw the rise of communism, the 1930’s saw fascism, but the political movements of today don’t break down the same way. Instead of one ideology becoming dominant, there are many ideologies sharing the same space, what has changed is the way in which these ideologies are presented. It’s true that the only real losers here are the centrists, the battle lines have now shifted to the fringes, as both diametrically opposed forces now go to war with each other. The time for unity has passed and now, the only thing that matters is if your side wins. I think young people have been able to acclimate to this new political world more efficiently than the older generations as young people have been increasingly taking the forefront in political dialogue and activism. In Sweden, a 16 year old girl named Greta Thunberg gained worldwide attention when she went on a tour speaking about climate change. At that moment, no one cared about tax law, or the negative affects of Greta’s agenda, all they cared about was this girl who was giving passionate speeches. This theme of emotion and passion have been seen all around the world. Many politicians have gained more fame from their tactics than their success. When French populist Marie le Pen lost to Macron in France, the majority of the news coverage didn’t surround Macron’s victory, it surrounded Le Pen’s defeat. As the younger generations become increasingly influential in society and politics, the same passion they felt when they were younger will be transferred into reality. Growing up in generation Z, we have seen nothing but war, recession, and corruption in our lives. The disillusionment with the system and the contempt we have for those in power who tell us not to worry, is starting to bear consequences. While many may fear populism, I think their fear is unmerited. To catch up to the radical changes in our society, we need radical change. We need to fight fire with fire, or else the system will not be able to go on. For so long, the system has been held together by the elite at the top, but the years of stagnation in the economy, climate and society are taking its toll and we need solutions before it’s too late. While the establishment relies on the status quo, in fact I would venture to say it exists to propagate the status quo. As long as the ones at the top can effectively control those beneath them, they can keep the system running to their own benefit. This is materialized in the way which the elite gets to participate in society. When an elite commits a crime, they are given a slap on the wrist, rarely receiving lasting punishment. There are many in our government and society that get to play by their own rules as they contribute to the societal decay. This sort of immunity is increasingly noticed by the masses. The populist figures that are rising up is the response of the disillusioned masses. During the election of 2016, Trump spun his rallies into chants of “Lock her up” and “Drain the swamp”. Without making a moral judgement on these terms, the underlying attitude is that of a resentment of the elite and those who are perceived as being invulnerable to justice. We will continue to see what is already happening before our eyes, the common man has said “enough” and whatever comes next will be the reaction and retribution for what has been decades of decadence.
