Cine: Potato Dreams of America (2021)

Hay mucho de surrealismo en esta película autobiográfica sobre Wes Hurley, nacido en Vladivostok (URSS, o Unión Soviética) como Vasili Naumenko. En el marco del advenimiento de Mijail Gorbachov y el fin del comunismo, Vasili, apodado “Potato” (Hersh Powers), se ha acostumbrado a que todas las noches se corte la energía eléctrica y a soñar el sueño americano que le ofrece un canal de series estadounidenses que emanan desde su televisor en blanco y negro. Lena, su madre (Sera Barbieri) es una médica se ha divorciado de su esposo violento (Jule Johnson) y recibe cada tanto la visita de su progenitora, Tamara (Lea DeLaria); casi adolescente, ya comienza a advertir que quizás no le seducen los culos femeninos, situación que no le da ninguna tranquilidad. Un poco a la manera del protagonista de “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), Potato encuentra un “amigo imaginario” no en Hitler sino en el mismísimo Jesucristo (Jonathan Bennett).

El sueño se vuelve real cuando Lena acepta emigrar a Seattle, aceptando la opción de casarse con John (Dan Lauria), un cristiano ortodoxo junto a quien espera conformar una rutina segura. Es un punto de quiebre en la historia, que comienza en 1985 y luego se traslada a la década de los noventa. El niño Potato ya es un adolescente (ahora lo interpreta Tyler Bocock mientras que la Lena “americana” recae en Alycia Delmore) y reafirma el rumbo de su búsqueda visitando el videoclub, deleitándose con la vista del empleado, yendo a la sección “Gay & Lesbiana” y alquilando de forma repetitiva la cinta “The Living End” (1992). El problema: John ya avisó que, si la vida familiar no resulta ser lo conservadora que quiere, no tardará en desligarse de Lena y en regresarla a Rusia y la sexualidad de su hijastro convierte la amenaza en una posibilidad cierta.

“Potato Dreams of America“ no es el primer intento de Hurley por narrar su historia: ya en 2017 estrenó su corto documental “Little Potato“, ganador de siete premios. Para esta “versión extendida“, el director y guionista aúna la comedia y el drama, integra algunos apuntes sobre el crecimiento personal con críticas al comunismo, al capitalismo, al fanatismo religioso y, en definitiva, a la idiosincrasia estadounidense en un relato que parece desdoblarse en dos episodios radicalmente distintos: la amable comedia de la infancia de Vasili y el peligro latente, encarnado por su padrastro, de su adolescencia.
