Arcane: What’s the deal with the Warden in Season 2?

I’ve seen people question why the Warden was present this season, but only seen further discussion only once or twice on X/Twitter, and I made a TikTok touching on it. Hopefully this post provides some clarity!

Like many others, I initially wondered why the Warden was present in Season 2. Caitlyn made some changes to Stillwater, including shutting down the inhuman cells that Vi was held in, but what about the Warden?

Someone pointed this out on X/Twitter, but look at the Warden’s desk in S1. Empty right?

Now look at it in Season 2. It’s filled with stacks of files and papers.

If you look closely, you’ll see the Kiramman crest on those files. (If you rewatch the episode, you should be able to see a clearer image of the files.) She’s giving him paperwork so he won’t have time to interact and abuse other inmates like he did to Vi.

It’s not ideal, of course, but keep in mind, that it can be difficult to fire someone— especially someone who’s been involved with that institution longer than Caitlyn has— without proof (besides Vi’s account). I hope this doesn’t sound bad; it’s just a sad reality that abusive, corrupt institutions like these don’t really document the harm THEY enact on the inmates.

Also, the Warden also wasn’t the only one abusing his power. Remember: 1) Vi says “send in whoever is gonna kick the shit outta me, so I can get on with my night,” and 2) the Warden asks Caitlyn “you want us to have a chat with her”. This is a larger, systemic issue, and the solution goes deeper than just replacing the Warden.

As much as I loathed seeing his face again in season 2, I’m glad we got to see the Warden meet the bitter end that he did. What better fate could await the man who actively put Vi’s safety and wellbeing at risk (and was pretty cavalier about admitting it) than being killed by the man who would go to the ends of the earth to protect her?

“Just a little more to the right,” Florence asked softly Esme nodded and very gently moved the camera slightly to the right being careful not to overstretch considering she was standing on a ladder. The cooking video Florence posted went down a treat, she was currently filming another video, it was another cooking video as people in the comments were asking for more, however she had plans to release another video first with her out and about trying to race across London, that video featured guests however so needed a little more time to plan and she didn’t want to do two cooking videos in a row, she didn’t want to pigeonhole herself too much when she was trying to make more of a name for herself.

Chris had been very helpful giving advice here and there, he also was connecting her to other people within the Youtube circle. He had the little black book of Youtuber’s and could immediately name off at least a handful of people who would be a good fit for the videos.

Florence had also been really at it with the TikTok’s too, thinking if she could also grow her audience there then there would be more people to migrate over to the Youtube channel; she was working incredibly hard and was really hoping it would pay off.

“I’m starting to worry about you a little,” Esme admitted once filming was finished, it was eight o clock in the evening once all of the reshoots had finished. Florence looked at her friend and flatmate her lips pursed.

“I get it. Look I know I’ve been caning it recently but I know my limits. I’m not working because I’m trying to occupy my mind I’m really just trying to build my following, it does take work Em,” Florence knew she had a habit of overworking, especially when she was upset about something but this wasn’t the case at the moment. She knew a lot of this work was down to luck but that didn’t mean you also needed to put the work in. She was at a pivotal point in her career, she had seen so many influencers get to this point and fade because they stopped trying and assumed success, she wanted to make this work.

“Hmm, well I’ve got my eye on you,” Esme replied not convinced. Esme was one of the very few people in the world who knew Florence well. From the moment she set her eyes on the very scared sixteen year old who was accompanied to the flat share and introduced as the new flatmate Esme knew Florence had a story to tell. Esme knew all of it now but it took a good few years for her to completely open up. There was usually a pattern to Florence, whenever it was a difficult time she shut herself away from the world, none of her followers knew why would they? As far as they were concerned she was a smiley happy go lucky women doing sometimes stupid things on camera with a stupid smile on her face and she posted a lot. Florence didn’t pull back like that when she was struggling, instead she created more and more but where she did pull back was her personal life. There was a time, really early on in their friendship where Florence didn’t speak to anyone except a camera for three weeks. There weren’t many reasons why a sixteen year old would be “accompanied” by someone who wasn’t a relative to a flat share and Esme didn’t pry she was just there and Florence was forever grateful. She didn’t have a lot of people in her life who would look ot for her, in fact she found it so strange in the beginning and was wondering just why Esme was being so nice to her. Eventually they managed to create a deep and meaningful friendship and had lived together ever since. Florence didn’t know what they would do one of them would meet someone special, she thought it would be only be a matter of time as Esme was gorgeous. Whenever she appeared on Florence’s TikToks her comments were flooded with ‘what’s her @?’

“I’m not running this time,” Florence stated. Esme nodded and left the room, leaving Florence alone with her thoughts, something she wasn’t a fan of at the best of times but she had learnt. She sat on the bed aimlessly scrolling, she wasn’t really paying attention too much she was just trying to occupy her mind slightly. A Notification then popped up on her screen, it was from Chris.

Hey I have a favour to ask you.

Florence looked at the message and replied

Sure, are you claiming that favour back?

If you wouldn’t mind. Will has pulled out of a shoot tomorrow he’s got leaky bum, do you happen to be free at all? No football skills required just running about London like an idiot, you’ll be paired up with someone.

As long as I don’t have to kick a ball I’ll be fine.

Florence smiled, even though it sounded like she was doing Chris a favour by replacing someone last minute it was also giving her another chance to meet people and another channel appearance it was a win, win for all.

Anxiety often made people late for things but for Florence it was the complete opposite, it made her annoyingly early for a lot of things because she was so paranoid about being late to things and scared of being perceived as lazy. She got off the bus which was opposite the meeting place a full forty minutes before she was due to meet, luckily over the road was a coffee shop so Florence decided to have a tea and try and calm down.

“Are you FloMC?” Florence heard from behind her, it was a male voice with a slight northern accent. She looked to see the one and only Stephen Tries standing in front of her.

“Yes, hi you’re Stephen right? Are you here for the shoot too?”

“Yep, train got in early at least I’m not late though, the last thing anyone needs in the morning is an angry hobbit,” Stephen joked and Florence smiled, it was then her turn to order.

“Could I get an English breakfast tea and a… what did you want?” Florence asked turning to Stephen.

“Same please mate,” Stephen replied Florence tapped her phone.

“Remind me to buy you a drink after the shoot,” Stephen smiled and Florence nodded. They grabbed their drinks and sat down on a table, they started off talking shop but went onto talk about their favourite comedians. They sipped their tea and when they finished they had less than ten minutes until they were due to meet so made their way to the venue where Chris was already there with his crew as well as Arthur Television.

“Oh you guys have met cool. Arthur you remember Florence,” Chris gestured between everybody quickly, Florence looked at Arthur and they exchanged polite hellos. George was the next one to enter the weird looking studio. He greeted Stephen with gusto, the pair giving each other a big hug a it’s been a long time since they had seen each other in person. He waved to Arthur and Chris only having seen them both the night before, he took a look at Florence and gave a nod.

“Hi George,” she replied a little nervously. Ever since she had met George she had an odd vibe from him, it didn’t make sense to her as everything she had heard about him was good but she wasn’t seeing any of it.

Harry and Ethan were the last ones to arrive and were right on time. Chris wasted no time going over all the rules for the game.

“I don’t know why you do this when you just decide to change the rules halfway through the video anyway,” Arthur moaned casing everyone to laugh. Chris just ignored it and carried on before revealing the pairs; Harry and Ethan, George and Stephen and Florence and Arthur.

“I thought I’d make sure you’re with someone you’ve met,” Chris explained to Florence and she thanked the lucky stars she wasn’t shoved with George.

The shoot was fun but chaotic, Florence had a real competitive streak, maybe it was linked with her need to please she wasn’t sure but none the less she put everything she had into things. Arthur was also quite excited about the prize so wanted to win too, the pair were doing quite well. Despite George and Stephen trying to sabotage their football. Florence couldn’t help but notice the malice in George’s voice when he was telling Stephen “Get her! Trip her!”

It didn’t work as Florence and Arthur won the tickets for the Olympics, Arthur really wanted to go.

“You can keep the tickets Arthur, and don’t worry about having to spend the trip with someone you hardly know, you can keep both of them.”

“That’s really kind of you Florence. He wanted to put you through but I knew you were too nice for Chris,” Arthur said throwing it back to the dating video and Florence laughed.

“Well content’s content,” Florence replied not minding too much about the competition.

“Anything for the content,” another voice said in an almost teasing tone. Florence looked to see George who was walking past her.

“Is he okay?” Florence asked pointing at the man and Arthur smirked a little.

“Yeah he just gets a little bit like this around… strangers,” Arthur finished his sentence after a little pause. Florence was convinced but nodded, she didn’t know anyone in the room well enough to start disagreeing with them.

I've been saying this for years but I've finally found the funniest way to say it, in the MCU Tony Stark isn't so much Peter Parker's father figure as he is his deadbeat dad figure. Like Tony shows up once a year to take Peter to a baseball game kinda vibe. Tony in homecoming is like hey kid I know I haven't seen or spoken to you in months but I bought you something and that's basically the same as emotional support. Tony taking Peter to Germany in civil war is like when your deadbeat dad tells your mom you're having father-son time but he's really just taking you to his guys' poker night and trying to get you to cheat for him. Tony mourning Peter after infinity war and calling him his kid is like when your dad only wants to hang out with you after he's lost custody. Like well and truly deadbeat behavior no wonder the fanon is like that

It was fun reading about Lucky and I’ve thought of several questions about him:

1) How did Tegan die and how was he brought back?

2) What was Tegan’s life like?

3) What sort of person is Tegan’s brother?

4) What is Lucky’s daily routine?

It was fun reading about Lucky and I’ve thought of several questions about him:

1) How did Tegan die and how was he brought back?

He was brought back à la Shepard in an effort led by his older brother, a talented neurologist willing to call in every last favor he'd accrued over his career. Experimental cybernetics and nanotech to knit the corpse back together… synthetic neural weaves to shore up and repair the brain damage… The aim was to rebuild his damaged parts, resuscitate his basic autonomic functions and, in turn, facilitate the recovery and augmentation of his higher functions - all with the end goal of bringing his little brother back.

As for how Tegan died?

Motorcycle accident.

2) What was Tegan’s life like?

Probably less legitimate than most people’s - not that he ever let his mother know, back when she was alive. Ostensibly, he was just an apprentice at a tattoo parlor and liked frequenting the library. Beneath that, though, he had a familiarity with the city’s rougher crowds and lesser-known corners. A known neutral party to those interested in such things, Tegan was the king of the illegal street racing scene and a popular racer to bet on. ‘Course, being so familiar with the fast and loose life, Tegan was no stranger to witnessing other crimes from time to time. Some of his old racing buddies, the ones who know how observant he was, think that Tegan’s death was no coincidence - but they know to keep their voices down.

3) What sort of person is Tegan’s brother?

Janus… is a perfectionist, a visionary, and a brilliant academic to boot - he holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience and a master’s in software engineering, and he fully intends to broaden his wheelhouse as he goes. He’s also very much the picture of a resentful older sibling for most of his and Tegan’s upbringing, because, like - while he studied the blade, Tegan was out here goofing off and getting into trouble and still somehow being the favorite son, to salt the wound. Of course, what he lacks in close connection and open communication (and he really is lacking there), he makes up for with a ferocious tenacity. If this man sees something worth salvaging, he will immediately lock his jaws on it and he will not accept failure as an option.

He knows he should have tried more with Tegan, and he refuses to entertain the thought of never having that second chance.

4) What is Lucky’s daily routine?

For the most part, Lucky is a courier and busy with it; lets him combine his love of riding with an easy way to see new things and meet new people. He lives on lots of little catnaps interspersed with lots of running around - it’s not unusual to see him out and about early in the morning, and again in the middle of the night. 

His routine is a little like this: deliver package, stop by new hole in the wall place he passed earlier, deliver package, head home to sleep and feed dmitri. head over to janus’s lab for mnemonic exercises and a vitals check. deliver package. Find a new piece of media to delve into. Take nap. Leave city limits to stargaze.

Not necessarily like that all the time, of course, or in that order.

5) Does anyone else in Tegan’s family know about Lucky? If so, how are they taking it?

Oh, no. Going down the list, it’s like - father passed when the boys were little… mother a couple years before Tegan’s accident… between Janus’s aversion to regular communication and busy student life, and also Tegan being none too keen on letting on that he’s making a living racing illegally, neither one is close with their relatives. 

The most they know is that Tegan was hurt. He’s made a full recovery, though, so don’t worry, no need to visit (says Janus, stonewalling every single attempt while also frantically trying to snap his brother out of whatever delusion of identity he’s working through). 

Now, Tegan's associates, on the other hand… some are very concerned about the sudden personality changes. 

6) How similar/ different are Tegan and Lucky’s personalities?

They both love an adrenaline rush! They’re also both pretty social and will initiate conversations. Neither of them actively seeks romance or relationships, (‘no one in this city can handle me,’ says tegan. ‘i’ve existed for, like, three weeks,’ says lucky.) They’re also both good at compartmentalizing when they need to.

Tegan is louder, for sure, though - he’s developed an affectation of infuriating nonchalance after years of being constantly dealt his brother’s disapproval, the “why are you always like X”  and “why do you never do Y.” He will not be judged, thanks, and certainly not by the guy who only communicates in criticism and academic citation. 

Lucky is still chatty, but he speaks a little softer, and he pays more attention to the people around him. He skirts around people in a crowd rather than walking straight through. He’s taken by small details and twice as observant as his template, and people who knew Tegan are a little unnerved by how much more insightful he is, these days. Novelty makes him gentler, keener to listen in. He still shares Tegan’s pull to go fast at all times, though.

To sum up the main difference, though: Tegan will tank a sucker punch and grin through bloodied teeth. 

Lucky will dodge. 

7) Besides Dmitri and the helmet, does Lucky keep anything from Tegan?

Aside from all the basic identifying and legal assets? Tegan's apartment for one (although he does take care to partition everything that's not his own). Walking in, you would think two people were living there - only, one of them has been away for so long that an atmosphere of neglect has settled over his things. It takes a long while for Lucky to peek into Tegan’s collection of books and journals, so they’ve been getting a bit dusty. Can’t bring himself to throw anything, though. Feels disrespectful.

Tegan’s bike was completely totaled in the accident, though. Lucky would have kept it, otherwise.

8) Would Tegan’s brother dig further into denial as time goes on or would he accept that Lucky is a person of their own?

Ooh, that is a very good question, like, thematically. Janus is the reigning champion of not letting things go, tbh; it wouldn’t just take time, either. It would take a slow, methodical dismantling of everything Janus thought he knew about Tegan. It would take little, sharp instances of realization, that Tegan had passions and hobbies that he’d had no idea of. That Tegan had always looked up to him, behind the cavalier rebel front. That, really, when it came down to it, he never really knew his little brother at all. 

Honestly? First he has to accept that he can’t fix this; it’s too late, and his brother is gone. 

Only then will he even begin to be able to accept Lucky as his own person. 

Something something Janus’s stages of grief go: anger, bargaining, denial denial denial…

9) Would Lucky ever be comfortable at looking at Tegan’s face?

Yes! I mean, very early on, he hardly even had a problem looking in the mirror - like, it was tragic and all, and of course he harbors a lot of curiosity about who this other guy was, but it was only up until people started expecting him to be Tegan that it started to cause him discomfort. Once he has a firm grasp on who he is, ‘cause he’s still feeling that out, and once certain people understand that he’s Not The Guy They Want, then he’d be able to look himself in the eyes without wanting to crawl out of his own skin a little bit.

they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

A pro-Palestine Jew on tiktok asked those of us who were raised pro-Israel, what got us to change our minds on Palestine. I made a video to answer (with my voice, not my face), and a few people watched it and found some value in it. I'm putting this here too. I communicate through text better than voice.

So I feel repetitive for saying this at this point, but I grew up in the West Bank settlements. I wrote this post to give an example of the extent to which Palestinians are dehumanized there.

Where I live now, I meet Palestinians in day to day life. Israeli Arab citizens living their lives. In the West Bank, it was nothing like that. Over there, I only saw them through the electric fence, and the hostility between us and Palestinians was tangible.

When you're a child being brought into the situation, you don't experience the context, you don't experience the history, you don't know why they're hostile to you. You just feel "these people hate me, they don't want me to exist." And that bubble was my reality. So when I was taught in school that everything we did was in self defense, that our military is special and uniquely ethical because it's the only defensive military in the world - that made sense to me. It slotted neatly into the reality I knew.

One of the first things to burst the bubble for me was when I spoke to an old Israeli man and he was talking about his trauma from battle. I don't remember what he said, but it hit me wrong. It conflicted with the history as I understood it. So I was a bit desperate to make it make sense again, and I said, "But everything we did was in self defense, right?"

He kinda looked at me, couldn't understand at all why I was upset, and he went, "We destroyed whole villages. Of course we did. It was war, that's what you do."

And that casual "of course" stuck with me. I had to look into it more.

I couldn't look at more accurate history, and not at accounts by Palestinians, I was too primed against these sources to trust them. The community I grew up in had an anti-intellectual element to it where scholars weren't trusted about things like this.

So what really solidified this for me, was seeing Palestinian culture.

Because part of the story that Israel tells us to justify everything, is that Palestinians are not a distinct group of people, they're just Arabs. They belong to the nations around us. They insist on being here because they want to deny us a homeland. The Palestinian identity exists to hurt us. This, because the idea of displacing them and taking over their lands doesn't sound like stealing, if this was never theirs and they're only pretending because they want to deprive us.

But then foods, dances, clothing, embroidery, the Palestinian dialect. These things are history. They don't pop into existence just because you hate Jews and they're trying to move here. How gorgeous is the Palestinian thobe? How stunning is tatreez in general? And when I saw specific patterns belonging to different regions of Palestine?

All of these painted for me a rich shared life of a group of people, and countered the narrative that the Palestininian identity was fabricated to hurt us. It taught me that, whatever we call them, whatever they call themselves, they have a history in this land, they have a right to it, they have a connection to it that we can't override with our own.

I started having conversations with leftist friends. Confronting the fact that the borders of the occupied territories are arbitrary and every Israeli city was taken from them. In one of those conversations, I was encouraged to rethink how I imagine peace.

This also goes back to schooling. Because they drilled into us, we're the ones who want peace, they're the ones who keep fighting, they're just so dedicated to death and killing and they won't leave us alone.

In high school, we had a stadium event with a speaker who was telling us about a person who defected from Hamas, converted to Christianity and became a Shin Bet agent. Pretty sure you can read this in the book "Son of Hamas." A lot of my friends read the book, I didn't read it, I only know what I was told in that lecture. I guess they couldn't risk us missing out on the indoctrination if we chose not to read it.

One of the things they told us was how he thought, we've been fighting with them for so long, Israelis must have a culture around the glorification of violence. And he looked for that in music. He looked for songs about war. And for a while he just couldn't find any, but when he did, he translated it more fully, and he found out the song was about an end to wars. And this, according to the story as I was told it, was one of the things that convinced him. If you know know the current trending Israeli "war anthem," you know this flimsy reasoning doesn't work.

Back then, my friend encouraged me to think more critically about how we as Israelis envision peace, as the absence of resistance. And how self-centered it is. They can be suffering under our occupation, but as long as it doesn't reach us, that's called peace. So of course we want it and they don't.

Unless we're willing to work to change the situation entirely, our calls for peace are just "please stop fighting back against the harm we cause you."

In this video, Shlomo Yitzchak shares how he changed his mind. His story is much more interesting than mine, and he's much more eloquent telling it. He mentions how he was taught to fear Palestinians. An automatic thought, "If I go with you, you'll kill me." I was taught this too. I was taught that, if I'm in a taxi, I should be looking at the driver's name. And if that name is Arab, I should watch the road and the route he's taking, to be prepared in case he wants to take me somewhere to kill me. Just a random person trying to work. For years it stayed a habit, I'd automatically look at the driver's name. Even after knowing that I want to align myself with liberation, justice, and equality. It was a process of unlearning.

On October, not long after the current escalation of violence, I had to take a taxi again. A Jewish driver stopped and told me he'll take me, "so an Arab doesn't get you." Israeli Jews are so comfortable saying things like this to each other. My neighbors discussed a Palestinian employee, with one saying "We should tell him not to come anymore, that we want to hire a Jew." The second answered, "No, he'll say it's discrimination," like it would be so ridiculous of him. And the first just shrugged, "So we don't have to tell him why." They didn't go through with it, but they were so casual about this conversation.

In the Torah, we're told to treat those who are foreign to us well, because we know what it's like to be the foreigner. Fighting back against oppression is the natural human thing to do. We know it because we lived it. And as soon as I looked at things from this angle, it wasn't really a choice of what to support.

looking up from your book you see simon starting to wake up and you reach out to grasp his hand, only for him to rip it away from you when his eyes were fully opened.
