PERSONAL opinion on Shattering

This is a post I made in September 2022 and never posted.

I spent time drawing it but I didn't want to throw fuel on the fire that was already burning with this season, but given how things didn't really get much better and the ""spirits"" are returning (in a way that I personally find extremely unfair) here's it. I'm still playing Sky almost everyday but I'm very unhappy with how the game is being handled.

Season of Shattering is over and I definitely have lots of thoughts about it, some of which I have already expressed here. It is mostly criticism, because while I understand they warned us this would've been a different season I struggle to find positive points in those differences. This season has been extremely lacking, in my opinion. (More below.)

Yes, the absence of spirits is what bothered me the most during this season and I'll never stress this enough. Spirits are a core element in Sky and what drive mostly the narrative of each Season, interacting with players and involving them in missions and quest. Shattering's concept is strongly tied to Sky's lore and story and yet we're given none, there is no one here, it feels desolate, which can be good in theory, but not for a months long event.

Here are some ideas and concepts I made for dark spirits a while ago.

You have no idea what time it is but it’s definitely past midnight. But nevertheless your in your kitchen drinking your heart out, it was reasonable since it was the weekend. But that ended up with you grabbing the spare keys your boyfriend gave you and driving to his house (surprisingly without getting pulled over or crashing shhh). You get to his house, open the door, then plop yourself on his couch passing out a few minutes later.

At about 10:23am Blake finally gets out his room, and walks down the stairs to see you lying curled up on his couch. “What the hell..?!” he scream whispers to himself running over to you. When he gets over to you he shakes you awake, "Are you okay? Why the hell are you here?". You turn over and face him rubbing your head nodding "I'm alright, sorry for the unannounced visit.." you say avoiding the question from embarrassment. Blakes only response was a nod and a mumbly "It's okay". He sits down next to you rubbing your back not knowing what to say or do. A few minutes go by and Blake picks you up bridal style carrying you to his room.

You get to his room and he lays you on his bed. "You look fucked. What happened?" he asks standing next to the bed as you lay there rubbing your eyes. "I got drunk and missed you, so i grabbed your spare key and came here" you say with embarrassment. Blake pauses then finally speaks, "Wait so you drove here?!" shocked. You look up at him “Well i made it here safely that's all that matters?”. All he does is roll his eyes and speak in a plummy tone, “I'm going to go get you water and Advil, stay right there” . You nod as he walks out the room.

Later he comes back up to the room with the water and meds. While you still lay there curled up in a ball he just places the stuff on the side table next to the bed, then sits down next to you rubbing your head. He then pulls you up onto him placing your head on his chest running his hands through your tangled hair. "I'm sorry." you spoke in a gravelly tone. All Blake does in response is kiss the top of your head hugging you. He begins to pull you to sit up still on him, then grabbing the water and medicine looking at you as you rub your eyes once more. "Please take this" he added smiling a little at your sleepy demeanor. You look up at him and take the stuff from his hands "Mhm so you can drug me?" jokingly. Blake laughs and rolls his eyes.

Moments later you are laying next to him, with his arm around you as y'all watch Y/F movie. Blake pulls you closer to him "You feeling any better?" he adds. You nod looking up and smiling at him "A lot, thank you". He smiles back and kisses you cheek "I'm glad". As he says that you close your eyes to drift back into sleep.

there is something to be said for candle run burnout for sure, like it now takes so many candles to get things that you want, as well as the pricing for paid items of course. The entire thing just makes me wonder if sky: cotl should follow in the footsteps of animal crossing: pocket camp and just make a paid game with no in-app purchases. I think the team are trying to tackle the CR burnout tho with different mechanics such as revamping daily quests (personally i don't like the revamp as it is now, but it's clearly in its early stages!). There's just...a lot going on and it would be better in my opinion if there was no IAP at all, especially because I've seen players be weird in the past about it, like trying to justify paid items by talking about veteran status (idk how veteran status correlates with being able to pay for IAP). Overall I think there needs to be a revamp of sky as a whole.

Again, this got long. I have thoughts.

Yeah, IAP is a really tricky topic. On one hand, it's kinda how free games make money, so I personally get not cutting it out completely. On the other, it really seems like ALL the good cosmetics are IAP.

I mean, in Days of Sunlight, there are 7 IGC items (50 Tickets, 384C, and 30 H). and 11 IAP items ($200+ USD). What's worse is most people can't even afford all the IGC items so you end up getting 3-5 items out of the total 18. For a game that's a lot about cosmetic collection, that sucks for the average player!

I'm not personally bothered but the 20+ ticket values. If you're more or less collecting, you can get them fairly easily. You can miss almost half the days and still get the two items. (84 tickets over 14 days. 50 tickets for the two cosmetics. you can miss 5, almost 6 days and still have enough) I have more to say on Ticket Cosmetics, but I'll save that for later.

I wouldn't be as bothered by this insane IAP to IGC item split if they were affordable and if IGC items as a whole stood up to the design and demand of the IAP. Apparently, the earrings were GOING to be IGC but were last minute switched with the floaty. There are SO few earrings, so making them IAP really sucks. It feels like the umbrella problem now. (of the 7 umbrellas, only 2 are IGC as TS)

I would love to see the IAP disappear altogether too, but that's just not realistic. From a financial standpoint for the company, as well as just in general. People hate them, but people still buy them. If anything I could maybe see a price reduction in IAP but with that comes the fact that now those who paid the higher price were "scammed" and that could create legal problems.

I have no idea what TGC could do, but for starters, I'd ask to lower IGC item prices and make fewer IAP items. Whether that will happen or not, I'm not optimistic, unfortunately.

Bit of a vent post but...

This is the second year in a row I haven't been able to get anything from Days of Color. Last year I was overseas and didn't have time to grind the absurd number of tickets needed for the cape. This year the flash bang bug prevented me from collecting tickets.

And I could just wait until next year and use candles to buy everything, but the candle prices are even more obscene than the ticket prices. The economy has gotten absolutely ridiculous, I don't know how much longer TGC can keep this up before people riot. Things weren't like this when I started. It's really been over the last year that prices have gotten more and more ridiculous, and it's to the point where it's putting me off the game. Sky is my baby, I got my degree thanks to this game, but I so rarely play anymore... The prices are so high it's not practical for me to buy anything and since I'm not grinding there's no motivation for me to log on. It's frustrating and I don't know what my plan is. I don't plan to fully stop playing, but I'm definitely not motivated to play often.

I dunno. I'm frustrated. And I know I'm not the only one.

why are they locking an incredibly requested and necessary accesibility feature behind a limited time cosmetic?? why is it not just a toggle/setting

Bloom in Sky has always been an eyesore for players, both those with and without photosensitivities, and many players have been asking for a feature to toggle/reduce bloom to make the game more accessible to them.

And we finally get that!

In the form of a PREVIOUS, no longer available cosmetic until 8 more months only available for igc, Accesibility should not be cosmetic.

If they have the ability to give players the option to remove something for accessibility, it should not be restricted to a cosmetic, that many players probably do not have.

the tints are cute and can be sunglasses exclusives but theres gotta be smth better to give to the feast goggles instead of a desired accesibility feature, smth that everyone should have, my god

(the main focus is the feast goggles, the other 2 dont remove bloom)
