Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei:

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.

Newest Danmei Titles Licensed for EN from Haitang

Not sure if everyone heard the news yet but there is a new publisher Haitang in the US — they're the US branch of their chinese branch Cherry Apple, and Cherry Apple has been around for more than 5 years and licensed and printed plenty of simplfied CN danmei novels. Cherry Apple JUST announced its closure after they've cleared all the printing of their current on-hand licenses and they're known for their amazing covers.

So while Haitang (US) hasn't announced a PO, they've definitely got the expertise in the printing side of things. Everyone's pretty excited for their covers, because Cherry Apple had it down pat like no one else did.

The translators they've announced for their officially announced releases have been fan translating pretty long, and judging from their follow list some of the translators you currently know may also be on the roster.

Something I've noticed while watching the Burrow's End on my laptop: the bits of writing we see during the intro are in Polish!!! They're quite blurry and you can read only some of the words but it seems like it's some sort of instruction manual or technical description of a vehicle! (Easy to guess based on the images, I know, but do you know how hyped I am to see my native language used in D20 show???)

Here for example, you can make out words "- numer silnika (rys. 7)" (tr. engine number (sketch no. 7)); "jego kadłubie po lewej stronie, nad" (tr. it's cockpit on the left side, above); "rozdzielaczem zapłonu" (tr. ignition distributor) and "numer podwozia odbity na" (tr. chasis number imprinted on).

Here's the second image where you can read something, although it's far more difficult this time. We've got "chodu" in bold on the very top of the page, which is most probably the back half of word "samochodu" (tr. car), description under the picture says "umieszczenie numeru silnika" (tr. engine number placement). There are also words that look like "production", "more important" and "spare parts" but it's hard to make them out, even if there's a larger piece of text showed here

Ogólnie mówiąc, dystrybutorzy serialów bądź kreskówek często robią tak, że porcjują dane media, by utrzymać atencje widza dłużej i dać mu poczucie suspensu, cn? Przez co widzowie są chętniejsi do oglądania kolejnej części niż gdybyśmy dostali całe 26 odcinków na raz, aczkolwiek cały sezon pewnie jest już dawno wyprodukowany, nagrany i zrealizowany pod kątem animacji oraz dźwięku, dawno temu, jedynie czekając, by wydusić ostatnie grosze z nielicznych już widzów tego szczocha.

Aczkolwiek może być też druga opcja, czyli Hasbro zamówił "2 sezon" Earth Spark jeszcze jako sezon 1- już tłumaczę i objaśniam. W Ameryce system prawny do tworzenia serii działa w taki sposób, że kiedy twórca X wyprodukuje pierwszy sezon serialu A i przy tym zamknie to całkowicie, cena którą musi wszystkim zapłacić powiedzmy, że wynosi 1 pieniążek. Ale kiedy twórca tworzy X już sezon 2 serialu A, to znaczy, że się sprzedaje, ergo musi już wszystkich zapłacić 2 pieniążki.

Dlatego często twórcy każą wyprodukować od razu +50 odcinków danego serialu jako 1 sezon (jak było w serialu Sam i Kat, wiem to z video esseyów takiego fajnego gościa na yt Quinton Reviews, polecam jego filmy, ale zwykle jego eseje trwają od 4-12 godzin, więc idealne do rysowania, ale trzeba się przyzwyczaić), bo im się to bardziej opłaca, bo mogą zapłacić mniej animator, aktorom głosowym, etc.

Tutaj wchodzi moja teoria, która nie jest potwierdzona jakkolwiek, czyli Earth Spark jest tego typu dziełem, gdzie wyprodukowano od razu +50 odcinków jako 1 sezon, dlatego mimo iż cały serial jest gigantycznym flopem i ta mała dramka z Fox News nie pomogła (jebać te stare kurwy, bo stare kurwy jebane mają być), dlatego mimo tych problemów, nie zrobili cancella serialu po 1 sezonie, bo mieli gotowe więcej odcinków, więc pewnie chcieli jeszcze trochę bilonu z nich wycisnąć, po prostu nie powstanie następny sezon. TO JEST TYLKO MOJA TEORIA, PROSZĘ HASBRO NIE POZYWAJ MNIE, JESTEM BIEDNY.

Spot feels drained already and she’s only sold ten of her stack of hundred. It’s been an hour of selling, normally she could knock out at least twenty by now.

Maybe takin’ Kelly up on strikin’ would’a been the smart move, she thinks snidely, Could’a gotten a free day off. 

She shakes her head, no use in dwelling over it now. A choice was made. It’s up to Manhattan to prove whether it’s worth joining. She hasn’t heard anything from the other borough since the day the prices went up, and while she knows not to expect anything so soon, the silence feels odd. As if she should be hearing screams and explosions over from the other end of the bridge. But, she waits. 

“Fighting Breaks Out at Strike Meeting!” Not technically a lie. There was only a tiny bit of arguing between strike leaders and trolley higher ups. It manages to get her a sale; an older man who barely gives her time between throwing the coin in her direction and stealing the paper from her hands. “Salamat, po,” she huffs under her breath, stuffing the cent into her pocket. The same one where her treasured newspaper scrap still hides. 

She’s finishing a sale with a kinder woman who hands her a nickel when she hears it. The words get lost in the cacophony of the streets for a moment, but when she moves closer to the ladies running the fabric vendor, the conversation becomes clear as day. 

“They did what?” gasps one woman. 

“Knocked down the wagon carts and tore up newspapers, those Manhattan kids.” the other shakes her head disapprovingly. 

I’ll be damned, Spot thinks, ‘Hattan’s got a backbone after all. 

“Oh, the absolute disrespect,” the first woman says. “All the hard work gone into making them, gone just like that. What was the reason?”

“I hear it’s all because it costs more to buy the papers now. Now, I don’t understand what the big deal is. If they wouldn’t act like such children and sold more, then they’d have the funds to handle the price change. Simple saving. It’s nothing but immature overreactions, if you ask me.” 

They continue to bash the newsies for striking, but Spot walks away. She’s heard enough. 

In a spiteful and petty fashion, Spot needs to prove that the newsies are anything but lazy and deserve to have a fair price. To have them read the headline one day and realize they were wrong, that their voices do matter and can make a difference. Manhattan also did hold up their end of the bargain. Making a statement and being proud about it. Standing their ground and showing Spot their commitment to the cause. She respects that, admires it. 

But mostly, it’s because striking is the right thing to do. It’s not just a childish rebellion, but a full scale revolution.

It isn’t fair for men like Pulitzer to switch the prices on them so suddenly and without a reason. Nor is it fair of her to allow her newsies to be taken advantage of, to put the idea in their heads that what they want doesn’t matter. They need to fight before more is taken from them: their voices, their jobs, their lives. They’re more than pawns to be controlled by the game makers, they have to flip the board over and rearrange the pieces. Remake the game from scratch.
