I have some big news to announce...

The show will follow me and the rest of my Cnidaria Phamily of hydrozoans, scyphozoans, anthozoans, and cubozoans. Join us to see all the exciting things we get up to. I'd like to introduce you to some of them right now!

La Carabela Portuguesa (Physalia physalis) es un organismo colonial monotípico de hidrozoo sifonóforo de la familia Physaliidae. Es una colonia de pólipos que trabajan juntos para sobrevivir. Posee una vela gelatinosa de entre 15 y 30 cm de color azul, violeta o rosa, que le permite navegar por los océanos impulsada por el viento, las mareas y las corrientes marinas. Tiene cuatro tipos de pólipos: los neumatóforos que inflan la vela y controlan la flotabilidad, los gastrozoides que se encargan de la digestión de las presas, los dactilozoides que son los tentáculos urticantes que capturan y paralizan a las presas, y finalmente, los gonozoides que se encargan de la reproducción. Se encuentra en mar abierto en todas las aguas cálidas del planeta, en especial en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales de los océanos Pacífico e Índico, así como en la corriente del Golfo atlántica. Otra Ilustración que hace parte de un encargo que nos hizo la fundación @secretosparacontar mientras trabajaba en el ya desaparecido Lúmina Estudio (Medellín) con Natalia López Q. y Leonardo Romero Z. Las ilustraciones se publicaron en el libro Los Secretos de los Animales que hace parte de una completa colección con la que la entidad realiza una hermosa labor educativa en miles de hogares campesinos de Colombia. También participaron en este proyecto: la ilustradora de la fundación Carolina Bernal Camargo y el Señor OK desde su estudio de aquel entonces Zorro Negro.

High tide left a swarm/smack/bloom of venomous Portuguese Man-o-War jellyfish on the shore. I decided to make a project of it and had the kids research the creature know as the “Floating Terror.” Here are a few cool facts: The PMoW is actually composed of SEVERAL district organisms that inhabit one body - a colonial organism. It is the only species with its own genus and its own family. It’s pretty unique. Their tentacles can grow up to 10m long. The Portuguese part of their name comes from the sails of Portuguese war ships. While I was swimming in the warm water, about 10m away this amazing creature was being washed up onto the beach. We thought it was a dead fish next to a plastic bag at first, but closer inspection showed it to be a beautiful Portuguese Man o’War. A few times a wave caught the creature and we thought it would be safely returned to the sea, but another wave would come in and strand it on the beach…

I was forewarned about the Portuguese Man O’ War when I went to Bermuda. They weren’t hard to spot either, there are so many of these jellyfish when I went swimming along the shores of Jobson’s Cove! They are spectacular in sight but quite painful to the touch I heard lol. Thankfully they’re not life-threatening otherwise I would’ve thought twice before I decided to come this close for a picture lol. I haven’t played with the colors in these photos everyone, Bermuda’s ocean waters are actually this blue. It’s a sight to see and how often is it you get to see beautiful jellyfish like this without going to the aquarium?? The soft sand was awesome to lay on and the sun burn wasn’t too bad even though there weren’t any clouds in the sky lol. The one thing I wanted to see was the Parrot Fish, but I couldn’t spot it lol. A more colorful shot of yesterday's unusually large number of Portuguese Man O' War I found washed ashore in the morning tide. The seaweed is a bit heavier, and I suspect their tentacles become tangled in the mass of clumps, and they are helpless to escape.
