i’d give up forever to touch you ; 이민형
pairing idol!mark x female!reader
synopsis while mark is away on tour, you find yourself looking back at old memories of you two. you have grown used to spending these moments alone while mark is gone, but little do you know he is doing the same thing miles and miles away.
genre established relationship, light angst, fluff, reader uses she!her pronouns, nicknames used for reader (pretty girl, baby) and mark (baby, pretty boy).
wc 1.8k
song : iris by the goo goo dolls
the sheets wrinkled beneath your shifting body. nearly silent crinkles filled the empty void within your room. slivers of light from the moon fell onto your restless figure, highlighting your messy hair and stretched-out shirt. you had gotten into bed at eleven; it was now three, and not a single ounce of your body felt tired.
thoughts ran wild in your brain, causing every other part of your body to feel more than alive. it’s not like this is the first time he’s had to go. with comebacks, schedules, and shows, mark was constantly on the go. most of the time, there would be two to three days in a row where the only place you would see mark was through the screen of your phone.
one time he had to be gone for a week while preparing for a new album, and looking back now, you wish you hadn’t been so dramatic. a week felt like a breeze compared to the treacherous months you were now facing without mark. not only was he physically not here with you in bed, your head rested on his chest, or vice versa, he also hadn’t texted or called all day.
at the beginning, you two constantly kept in touch, sending random photos or messages about how much you missed each other. but now with a dramatic time zone, texts fell further and further apart, which then turned into silence. you missed him more than words could explain; the t-shirt that hugged your body relived some of your sorrow, reminding you of how he had thrown it off the night before he left. giving in, you grabbed your phone from its spot next to you and opened your camera roll, clicking on your favorited photos.
some were of friends and family, but the majority were of you and mark. silly mirror photos taken when putting on face masks and spur of the moment selfies reflected back onto your face, causing your eyes to sting. maybe if it hadn’t been for the overflowing emotion you felt, the tears could be blamed on your brightness being too high, but it took no genius to know the reason. videos from picnics under sunny skies and tipsy late night games echoed in your room and settled right into your heart. silent tears continued to spill down your flushed cheeks, going unnoticed due to your full attention being on your boyfriend. you continued to scroll, stopping on a distinct image. the photo had been taken a little over a year ago.
the two of you sat on the edge of the sidewalk outside of your apartment complex. mark had a full day of schedules, giving him only the dark hours of the night to slip by your place and see you before he had to get up and do it all over again. his exhaustion quickly converted to energy after being in your arms as he stepped into your place. "dude… you’re like a human portable charger." his words were muffled due to being pressed into your neck, before he pulled back to look at you with wide eyes. "can we go for a walk?" he practically begged before lacing your fingers together and pulling you out into the chilly nighttime atmosphere.
"honestly…" you began while the two of you stepped in sync, hands still interlocked and swinging between your bodies. mark made a little hum as his head quickly turned at the sound of your voice. "i was expecting you to pass out when you came over." a breathy laugh left your lips as he continued to swing your hands. "what can i say? it’s just what you do to me, dude." the cheesy words made you both break out into giggles, never once disconnecting your hands. even when he began to wander off, your body just followed his smoothly, like it was second nature.
at this moment though, you stopped. "oh, mark you really know how to make a girl swoon, dude." your unexpected stop made him turn around as your hands became disconnected. at the sudden loss of contact, he quickly made his way back to you, as if you were miles away and not just a few steps. "baby you know i mean it as a term of endearment. i don’t just call anyone dude." his fingers made their way to your face and threaded a few careless strands behind your ear. his hand continued to slowly make its way down your neck and arm, finally re-entwining your fingers as they once were.
your body, which was once cold due to the dropping temperatures, instantly grew hot at his loving gesture. "so haechan, jisung, jeno, and practically all of your friends are on the same level as me?" you teased, tilting your head to the side and peering at your boyfriend through squinted eyes. "no dude- i mean, baby, of course not. hey, i don’t call anyone else pretty girl except you. right, pretty girl?" if there’s one thing you and mark were good at, it was getting each other flustered, and while he tended to express his a lot more than you, this nickname was one of the few gestures you couldn’t pull a poker face at.
feeling your cheeks instantly redden, you dropped your head and stared at the concrete beneath you. even with your eyes glued to the ground, you could practically see the smirk pulling at mark’s lips. "i got you good, huh?" he continued, causing your cheeks to deepen in color. using his free hand, he cupped your face so you could look right at him. "pretty girl," he teased breathlessly once more before pulling you towards him. as your lips slotted between his, you couldn’t stop the smile that pulled at the corners of your mouth. mark couldn’t hold back either, as you could clearly feel his cheek bunch up under your palm. "you finally got some game, huh, pretty boy," you joked, finally pulling back from his firm hold.
just as you did moments before, mark’s ears and cheeks instantly flushed at the new nickname. "dude stop," he whined, turning away and walking further down the street as he sulked. "oh, shut up, you big baby." you quickly got up behind him and wrapped your arms around his torso to stop his movement. mark titled his head over his shoulder to look back at you.
he could have sworn right there in that very moment that he fell in love with you. the look you had in your eyes like you held everything he ever needed within two small irises, and your hands burning straight through the thin fabric of his shirt and imprinting right into his bones. it’s not like this was the first time love came to mind. he was in love with you and had been for a long time, but in this exact moment, he found himself losing all sense of control and completely falling into you and your entire being.
his chest tightened at the memory. the afternoon sunlight covered his skin, warming him up even more than he already was. his shoulders slumped and his lips pouted ever so slightly as he scrolled through the countless candid photos he had of you. he had been stuck on a specific one for quite some time. from none other than that very night.
the two of you had paused your walk and decided to sit under a street lamp. small white flowers bloomed onto the patch of grass next to you. remembering the habit you had as a kid, you began to braid each flower with another to create a crown. maybe it was the focused expression on your face or the way the light from above you both seemed to settle around you like a halo, but mark swore if he didn’t capture you that very instant that he would regret it for the rest of his life. noticing his movements from the corner of your eye, you swiftly turned your head to catch him in the act.
his thumb pressed down on the screen, causing the photo to turn into a short clip. you had pulled an exaggerated smile at his phone before the both of you broke into a laugh, flowers still in hand. the sound of your laughter was enough to pull a small one out of him at that moment. still sitting in the bed, he reached over and grabbed his headphones from the bedside table. he knew, or rather, he thought, that you would be fast asleep during this time.
every single day had become harder and harder, even if it meant he was closer and closer to seeing you again. if it were up to him, he would book a one-way flight straight to you, even if he could only see you for a day. hell, he could buy you a ticket and fly you to him in no time, but with school and work, he did not want to stress you out even more than you already were. it’s selfish; he knows it, but he wishes you would let him be greedy and keep you by his side the whole tour.
clicking shuffle on his playlist, iris by the goo goo dolls began to drift into his ears. it’s like some higher being knew exactly how he felt and queued the song on purpose. shifting to lay flat on his back, mark stared at the ceiling and pictured that you were there with him, hand in hand, listening to this song together.
your body grew hotter the more you held back your own emotions. yanking the covers off, you situated yourself on your back and gazed upward. not being able to look anywhere else. he was all around you. from picture frames on your dresser to discarded sweatshirts on your floor, everything reminded you of him. but for mark, the only part of you he had was on his phone, and with that, you were still light years away.
a single tear sprouting from the corner of your eye, quickly lead a trail past your lips and down your neck. little did you know that mark too had a tear pool down his cheek in that exact same moment. picking up his phone and opening your texts, he quickly sent you a message.
[one audio] made me think of you and how badly i miss you man. it’s true “i’d give up forever to touch you” right now pretty girl. sleep well for me if you aren’t already. call me when you wake up no matter what time it is. i need to hear your voice. im deprived hehe :)) i love you lots and lots baby. talk to you so soon <333

What’s in my bag?
“Mai.” Jay said in a singing voice dragging out the I, the boys behind her chanting ‘mai’ as she placed her backpack on the table, hearing a quiet but not loud thud, taking a seat on the warm chair next to Jay. “I’ve had this backpack for forever, but we’ll go through the front pocket first.”
pulling out a big pouch, “this one is filled with my necessities aka my makeup.” opening the pouch, “this is my trusty eyeliner, I’ve had this since I was a trainee.” she said showing the cameras, “I have lashes, lip balm, gloss, liner and I guess the necessities a girl would need.”
“There’s also sunscreen,” pulling out a small bottle of it, “it’s almost empty.” Jay shook the bottle and taking the pouch out of her hands.
“Now for the bigger pocket,” unzipping the big pouch, “I have a hoodie that’s not mine but Jay oppa.” sheepishly smiling at him while handing it to him. “Julia has a bunch of stuff in her backpack, and sometimes forget to clean it out!” Sunoo shouted, “don’t call me out like that,” faked gasping looking at Sunoo.
“But yes I sometimes forget to clean out my bag,” she said defeatedly, “headphones! I got these before I left the states, and was an impulsive purchase, but I love them” she smiled at the camera, handing them over to Jay. “This is my portable charger for my phone,” she pulled it out of the bag, “and here’s another portable charger” sliding another portable charger onto the table, “a fan and my computer charger.” she said putting the stuff on the table.
“Oh! This is my laptop for school! It’s pretty heavy and which also makes the backpack heavy.” sliding the laptop back into the backpack, “and I think that’s it for me!” while putting the stuff back into her bag. “Wahh, Mai managed to fit a bunch of stuff into that tiny backpack” Jake said amazed by the stuff, “I’ve been looking for this hoodie for so long and turns out little miss Mai here had it the entire time.” Jay shook his head.

Legend of Zelda Theme Park - Entrance & Welcome Plaza (UPDATED)
Guests arriving at the theme park pass underneath a broad arch decorated with classic LoZ characters and monsters in action poses and find themselves…nowhere special, just yet. The Welcome Plaza is a fairly simple place with only light theming, the better to let newcomers orient themselves before diving into the adventure. The features here are likewise basic and chosen to help people prep for the day ahead. On both sides of the entry gate, ambient speakers play a continuous loop of overworld and title themes from the games.
(The cross-hatched area represents behind-the-scenes office space and other employee facilities, not accessible to the public.)
Attractions
There aren’t really attractions in this area per se…the closest thing would be a number of life-sized character statues scattered around the area for people to take photos of and/or with. Each of the little Triforce symbols on the map marks the location of one of these statues, in an alcove with a scenic backdrop for the aesthetic, but those aren’t necessarily the only ones. Park employees with professional-grade cameras are stationed nearby and may offer to take high-quality photos, which will be available for purchase later in the day at the Pictobox Shop in Castle Town.
Services & Amenities
Map & Compass: An information counter where guests can pick up a park map, scan QR codes in order to download specialty apps and learn about them, check in for specific “sidequest” activities and events, and have general questions answered.
Item Check: Like Link, theme park tourists may wish to carry a large collection of items in order to be prepared for any and all circumstances that may occur during their adventure. Unlike Link, they don’t have a magic satchel that carries it all weightlessly. At Item Check (named after the similar service in Skyward Sword), you can rent a storage locker for the day to hang onto your excess gear. And speaking of rentals…
Ravio’s Rentals: Compact, lightweight strollers and wheelchairs can be rented here for a reasonable fee plus deposit. (The employee uniforms evoke Ravio’s distinctive purple robe and striped scarf.)
First Aid Station: Park nurses are on staff during operating hours to assist with minor injuries and ailments in a soothing environment with interior decor reminiscent of a Great Fairy Fountain.
Shops
5. A Hero’s Essentials: This basic shop sells bottled water, snacks, portable phone chargers, sunglasses, ponchos, souvenir tee-shirts and baseball caps, and other conventional merchandise that any tourist can find a use for.
6. Nintendo Store: The focus, obviously, is LoZ itself, but other Nintendo titles and merch can also be found here.
Eateries
There are no permanent eateries in this area, but portable carts offering soda and packaged snacks can be found throughout the open space.

𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝟎𝟎𝟐: ᵈᵘˢᵗ & ᵈᵘᶠᶠˡᵉᵇᵃᵍˢ
𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐒 𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐊𝐘'𝐒 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐒 , , ,
𝐁𝐀𝐆 : : 1989 drab green jansport that was his father's in college
𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐀 𝐄𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐏𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 : : various camera equipment ranging from devices that inhabit his personal collection , accompanied by cameras rented from the university. included are also chargers , portable charging blocks , sd cards , spare lenses , etc. one of the rented cameras is currently missing.
𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐉𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐋 : : was at one point in time used for class ; first hundred pages filled with chicken-scratch handwriting and aimless doodles covering various periods of art history and periods. the most legible notes are the ones involving the baroque period , since that is tom's favorite. following art notes come plans for docuseries shots , storyboards , ideas given to him by reeve with aggressive question marks around them.
𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐈𝐃𝐒 : : a collection of random polaroid pictures taken by camille & eliza on his vintage , polaroid camera that he left at home ( given its age , he didn't trust it to survive the trip to the mountains , , , that it's more a collector's item than something he actively uses ). he protested the use of his camera for meaningless photos but he carries the pictures around anyways. he'd be devastated if anything happened to them.
𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐏𝐈𝐍 : : a pin given to him by camille when they were in undergrad. he thought it was corny at first , but refuses to take it off his bag.
𝐆𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐒 : : thomas normally wears contacts but didn't think it'd be practical to try and manage them in the wilderness. he's pretty blind and incredibly near-sighted when he isn't wearing them.
𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐌𝐒 : : despite his agreement with eliza , thomas is always prepared. not for attacks by dead "friends" or paranormal threats on his life but — sex ?? prepared.
𝐁𝐀𝐆 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐒 : : curtesy of camille , though he has yet to actually take any of them.
𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐓 : : his driver's license , some credit cards , his mom's obituary card , thirty-two dollars in cash , a business card for an art museum he had contemplated taking an internship at , a punch card for a coffee shop with eight out of ten punches filled out.
𝐃𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝐋𝐈𝐏 𝐎𝐈𝐋 & 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐒 : : eliza's go-to lip products. he went out of his way to buy these to have on hand for her since she is always complaining about needing to touch up but not wanting to have to carry them around in her bag. he hasn't had to break them out yet , but they're there for her. just in case.

getting ready for dream girl summer 🌸🫧
a post on getting through the summer flawlessly as a dream girl <3
getting through summer looks like… basking & glowing in the beautiful sun, traveling, going out with ease, having fun, being messy and more. so let’s begin.
♡ categories:
what does your ideal summer for this year look like? ideas, moodboards
physical: summer essentials, what to wear, makeup looks, luxuries, summer reads and bucket lists.
mental: mindset, wellness, reads and bucket list ideas
♡ what’s your ideal summer? ♡
you create the definition of dream girl and it can always change. so decide what your mind and body needs. is this a time for healing? or is this a time to be adventurous?
do you see yourself in nature, enjoying the silence after a chaotic winter and spring? or going to parties, hanging out with friends, meeting new people and trying so many new things?
or why not both? 💋
some bucket list ideas:
spend more time outside than on your phone
have a morning routine. don’t lose structure in the day. switch it up for summer and make it fun.
make a list of nice restaurants in the city to try out
plan out picnic dates
buy disposable cameras and have them developed at the end of summer!
go skydiving
go to a fancy hotel bar and leave the place with someone’s number (or many)
go on late night drives!
explore a random city
try out new foods
most important of all: follow your gut. keep your safety your #1 priority.
physical
♡ summer essentials
sunscreen duhh, is a must no matter the season, especially for summer.
⤷ apply sunscreen before you go out and reapply ever 2 hours. look for products that are: lightweight & nonsticky, don’t leave a white cast, spf 50++
anything from sol de janeiro ugh <3
waterproof jewelry
sunglasses
sea salt spray
shimmer body oil
after sun care
your signature scent for summer (scent recommendations below)
pack light and smart with makeup if you’re one to touch up: lipstick (can be used for your eyes and cheeks also), eyeliner, etc.
hair clips/ties
qtips for makeup smudges
mini fan to cool down
small wallet
have fun and unplug but if it’s a must, carry a portable charger if you didn’t charge it in the car or before you left the house.
tissues (for sweat, blotches)
♡ outfit essentials
sundresses
mini !! skirts !!
mules
bikini tops as regular tops
gold hoop earrings
silk scarves
flowy bottoms, skirts, dresses
a cute cover up
patterns
mini bag
backless tops
beauty
♡ warmer weather calls for natural, glowy looks
the sun is out so it’s only natural for me to want to glow when the sun is hitting my face and body ♡ i love to really highlight my highest points.
applying subtle gold shimmer on your eyelids
lipgloss!
preferably one that is hydrating, slightly pigmented to bring out the colors in your lips & glowy. not sticky. my recommendation is the dior lip glow stick.
highlighter
my favorite is mac’s strobe highlighter in peachlite. it honestly gives my skin such a beautiful and subtle pink glow to my face!! i love applying it before my makeup.
⤷ don’t forget your collarbones and shoulders.
there is nothing else that makes me feel like a radiating goddess walking down the street when i put highlighter on my body.
⤷ also, layering powder products on top of wet/creamy products make them more pigmented! this is why you see some people wet their eyeshadow brushes before dipping them into the product ♡
blushed & flushed or nothing!
who doesn’t love a good blushed face during the summer? just because your blush is visible doesnt mean you’re wearing too much!!!! own it!!
have fun with subtle pops of color 💋
it doesn’t have to be too crazy. keep it simple.
ideas can be:
- two toned eyeshadows
- colorful winged eyeliners
- a bold lip
nails ♡
- fun & bright colors like orange & blue
- if you want to keep it simple: french tips, nudes!
♡ summer scent recommendations
marc jacobs perfect
delina - de marly
le labo thé noir 29
chanel chance
replica beachwalk & bubble bath
tom ford soleil blanc, lost cherry, neroli portofino, bitter peach
good chemistry coco blush
victoria secret bombshell beach
ariana grande - sweet like candy
solinotes cherry blossom
for the mind & soul
♡ summer reads
nothing better than a good summer read. here are some recommendations!
my year of rest and relaxation - ottessa moshfegh
it happened one summer - tessa bailey
hook, line, and sinker - tessa bailey
beach read by emily henry
people we meet on vacation by emily henry
book lovers by emily henry
one hot italian summer - karina halle
malibu rising - taylor jenkins reid
every summer after by carley fortune

twisted series - ana huang (twisted love, twisted games, twisted hate, twisted lies)
birthday girl - penelope douglas
love & gelato - jenna evans welch
one italian summer - rebecca serle
hands down - mariana zapata
better than the movies - lynn painter
- have fun. kisses from blushydior ♡

For the ask meme: Kara and Lois?
Headcanon A: realistic
thara ak-var was her first kiss, just a few scant weeks before she got in her rocket to get yeeted earthwards
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
as linda lang, she nearly threw hands in a downtown metropolis panera bread because someone was shit-talking superman in response to some story on tv. kon, who was there with her, had to throw her over his shoulder and get outta there lickety-split because he just knew kara was about to dump a cup of soup on that guy.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
she never manages to fully forgive herself for her (perceived) role in her mother's death.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
she and kon actually get to bond like she wanted to, a bit before his death and a Lot after his resurrection. she teaches him about kryptonian culture, and he teaches her what he can about earth. they go to arcades together, or get coffee and then settle down somewhere private to go over how to read kryptonian. kon teaches her to surf. she teaches him about the history of krypton's guilds. they go to ma kent together to try and recreate kryptonian recipes based on what she remembers, with what earth substitutes they can come up with. its about the fambly, baybee!
and now lois (again)!
Headcanon A: realistic
she keeps a set of lockpicks in her purse, along with a flashlight, portable charger for her phone, and a small digital camera. never know when she might need to break in somewhere and document shady shit!
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
earth krypto the lil terrier fella imprints on her after dubbilex's death and she has no idea what to do with that. extremely grumpy little superdog who has made himself at home in her office and will NOT be moved. uh... she supposes he can just hang out so long as he's quiet and lets her work...?
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
sometimes i like the idea of a lucy who got out from sam's bullshit etc and who has a generally decent relationship with lois, but in versions where we follow everything with lucy from new krypton arc... it kills lois that she still loves her. of course she still loves her. that's her baby sister. she's turned into a person lois reviles. loving her hurts. but how can she not?
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
she shouldve gone after tana moon with a shotgun. listen. she shouldve gone after tana moon with a shotgun and in this essay i will

i keep my jealousy close chapter one
chapter two
It all started with finding out that there was a vigilante in Evergreen, appropriately named Vigilante. It scared the shit out of you knowing that there was some murderous person out there who seemed to be killing anyone who broke even the smallest law.
Some jaywalker had been found cut to ribbons one morning, and another day someone the traffic cameras had picked up speeding through a red light was found shot in their car. You didn't realize how bad it was until you went into the Italian restaurant, Fennel something, next to your laundromat to break a $20 when you overheard the staff gossiping about the latest death. Some bank manager who was on trial for embezzlement was found dead in his home, along with his partners in crime. "It was another Vigilante job, apparently. The security cameras were cut before the murder." The hostess squeaked out, sounding almost panicked when she said that, almost like she was guilty of the crime herself. She looked barely older than sixteen, so there was no way in hell she could even commit that sort of crime. Not if she was working at a restaurant for her first job.
"Maybe the bank guy killed someone, Madison. Personally, I'm glad Vigilante got rid of him so now we're all safe." Your head whipped around to find out exactly who had said that & your eyes settled on who appeared to be a busser, based on the half-full dish tub in his hands, standing there and looking directly at the hostess, Madison, with what looked to you like anger and disbelief. Vigilante had a fanboy, who knew? "The less scummy people the better if you ask me" Fanboy chimed in before Madison could get another word in "But what if I accidentally run a red light like that guy last week? I'm only seventeen, Adrian!" This was going to get interesting fast. Sitting down silently to watch the two argue for a few minutes before clearing your throat to finally get your change so you could do your laundry.
Both of them jumped at the sound of your voice, Madison hastily apologizing for making you wait. "It's okay, promise" You assured her with a genuine smile "I was just wondering if you could break this $20, the change machine at the laundromat only takes fives and ones." You were semi-new to Evergreen, you needed a fresh start after ending a long-term relationship that hadn't made you happy since the beginning. Leaving that loser behind was the best thing you had ever done for your mental health. But now you had to make new friends and create new experiences. Thankfully you were a writer and could work just about anywhere since you always got to work from home.
"Sure thing!" Madison chirped, counting out loud as she counted the change a little slowly, but who could blame her? Numbers suck. You couldn't help looking around as you waited, noticing the fanboy busser, Adrian as you recalled hearing Madison call him. You definitely admired the guy for being able to work semi-peacefully with a teenager. You'd never really liked teenagers, even when you were one. He had to be around your age, roughly late twenties.
Trying to not stare when he heaved the full bus tub up with ease, you turned your attention back to Madison, fairly certain that Adrian had seen you looking at him. “I appreciate it. Hopefully, I won’t be back to break a bill again & actually remember to get what bills I need for laundry. Or save for a washer & dryer so I don’t have to go to the laundromat anymore.” You rambled. Now you had to actually leave before they started to judge you for not being able to shut up. "Anyhoo, see you guys around" Raising your fingers in a salute, you turned and left, hearing Madison mumble "Old people are so weird" on your way out the door. Shoving the change in your pocket while you went back to the car to get your laundry and headed into the laundromat with your airpod knock offs connected, portable charger ready to go, you put on a podcast to listen to while you passed the time between loads being switched over, thinking about the weirdo from the restaurant. Why had he defended Vigilante so eagerly? And why had you been so impressed by the way he lifted that full bus tub onto his shoulder? You couldn't get that image out of your mind for some reason and it was driving you insane. So much so, that your Fitbit picked up your heart rate increase while you were sitting there, listening to two strangers talk about American Girl dolls or whatever.
Little did you realize that Vigilante fanboy, Adrian, had noticed you too, and had heard everything you told Madison about the laundromat. After his shift ended, he made his way to his car, conveniently parked close to yours without him even realizing it. He could see everything through the big window, watch everything you were doing. That was creepy. But he couldn't bring himself to look away while you sat on top of the laundry counter, singing along to some song he couldn't hear, swinging your legs and aggressively pointing your finger like you were at some punk show and not doing errands.
This wouldn't be the last time he'd see you, he decided. It couldn't be. Not when you were so intriguing.

Solo Safety Pt. 2
In Pt. 1, we covered some basics on how to encourage your mindset to start hiking or camping alone. As promised, I am now going to cover more tangible basics of safety – wildlife, weather, your vehicle, and the tools to have. I’m a firm believer that almost anyone can start hiking or camping with almost anything you already own. It doesn’t take many material items to go out and enjoy the outdoors. However, there are some essentials a person shouldn’t leave home without, and some knowledge to keep in mind, as well.
I am going to list some hiking essentials that are a starting point that also go right along with a camping trip. Anything I suggest does NOT necessarily need to be purchased brand new for top dollar. I encourage thrifting, looking out for people you know who may be discarding their camping gear, flea markets/yard sales, etc. If you’re in an area in the western states, there are so many second-hand gear stores. REI has a section in their stores where they sell returned items for cheaper prices. And these suggestions are just that: suggestions. People camp and hike in all different ways. Some outdoorsy folks are extravagant, and others enjoy being outside with nothing to get in the way of it. Some of what I list is recommended by organizations such as the National Park Service, but I’ll include some of my own ideas, also.
Hiking Essentials:
Water
Snacks (or full meals for longer hikes)
Flashlight/headlamp
Navigation - GPS, map, and/or compass
First-aid kit (moleskin, tweezers, bandaids, antiseptic wipes, gauze, tape, tourniquet)
Matches or lighter
Emergency blanket
Knife/multitool
Sun protection (sunglasses/hat/sunscreen/SPF clothing)
Clothing layers (warm hat, gloves, jacket/poncho, extra socks)
Some extra things you will find in my hiking pack:
Water flitration
Portable charger and cord
Insect repellent
Resealable bags (1 or 2 disposable as well as a reusable dry bag)
Unscented wipes
Hand sanitizer
Wallet or ID
Wristwatch
Bandana
Paracord
Trowel (for cat holes)
Hair ties
Pad/tampon/cup
More extras if you’re filling frilly:
Trekking poles
Duct tape
Seat pad/cushion
Camera
I know on paper this list can appear overwhelming if you’ve never packed a backpack for a hike before, but I promise I fit all of this (aside from the frilly extras) in an 18 liter backpack I bought on sale. I chose to purchase a new bag because I wanted the warranty, and I liked the style and set up. It would be even easier to use a bag you already own to pack and try out for a hike or two to start. Make notes of what you would improve, what items you felt were excessive, extra things you wish you brought, etc. There is no need to go out and buy a new backpack/bag before you commit to this type of hobby. Even if you can fit the bare necessities in the cargo pockets of your pants, or a fanny pack you already own, try that out first.
What do you think you could add for camping? Based on this list, you have most of what you need anyway! Add a tent for shelter, a sleeping bag, and some cooking gear (like a Coleman camp stove or a Jetboil, both run off propane) and a cooler for the meals you packed, and you are probably ready to sleep where you land. If you go online, “cowboy camping” is taking up in popularity, where you just use a sleeping pad on the ground and add your sleeping bag or some blankets, and you sleep under the night sky. If that’s what you’re into, then you can carry even less. Is it less safe than sleeping in a tent? Not by much, but as much as I enjoy being outside, I do my best to keep insects and the like OUT of my sleeping arrangement. A tent or some type of sleeping structure lends me a small feeling of security I will not give up. It's kind of like when you're a kid scared of monsters, and you convince yourself tucking your feet under your blanket will keep you safe. I would love to hear from others about their successful cowboy camping trips, though. This year I ran into a hiker who was working his way through the North Country Trail, using a hammock to sleep in at night. That makes for a lighter backpack! Whether you have a hand-me-down one-person tent, or a new palace made from nylon, there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from something you want to try. Tara Dower recently finished the fastest known time to complete the entire Appalachian Trail, and she spent her down time literally napping on the dirt. Don’t forget a good chair, though! It is where I spend at least 50% of my time while camping, so I like to have a comfortable one.
Lavish extras:
Air mattress or cot
Portable fridge
Power banks
Table
Electric blanket
Portable water heater
Portable gazebo
I could go on, because you can go all out with camping if you really want to and bring all types of creature comforts. But that’s a conversation for another post! And whether your adventure is an hour or several days, if you have a dog with you, make sure you have the essentials for them, such as extra water, food, and any first aid items they could need.
You’re probably thinking: “Wow, she really covered ALL the stuff you could possibly need for these adventures!” And you’re wrong. There is a completely separate list of items I carry in my vehicle at all times that can prove useful. Whether you dabble in off-roading, or you don't leave suburban areas, there are still things you should keep in your vehicle for those "just in case" moments. I have an old backpack in the bed of my truck, or you could use a cardboard box, a plastic tote case, a duffel, or whatever else you have on hand. I don't often need to go in this bag, but it's nice to have when I do. I carry in it:
Another portable charging bank
Yet another first-aid kit
Flashlight batteries
Travel size hygiene items
Emergency blanket
Unscented wipes
Paracord
Headlamp
Waterproof matches
Reusable spork
Multitool
Zip ties
Emergency rations
Empty water bottle
Jumper cables
Fire starters
Extra set of clothes (old sweat pants, socks, sweater that would have been donated anyway)
Towel
Beanie
But don't toss the bag in the back of your vehicle and forget about it. Make sure you periodically go through it, check to see if things need cleaned or charged and are in working condition. It's easy to forget what you have, and looking at and touching these things once a month will keep it in the back of your mind when you need them most.
I also have a set of traction boards and a 7 gallon jug of water I try to keep stocked with fresh water. Recently I decided I'm going to add a shovel to my truck bed, and I'm also working on deciding what type of fuel container I want to add.
I also keep a separate bag in the front of my vehicle. Is this being excessive? Probably, but I love to be prepared. It has:
Mechanix gloves
Winter gloves
Beanie
Pens
Lighter
Matches
Snacks (a random protein/Nutrigrain bar has saved me from hanger)
National Park Pass
Bandana
Roll of TP
Unscented wipes
Hand sanitizer
Sunscreen/insect repellent/bear spray (These move between my hiking bag and truck bag as needed)
Flashlight
Seatbelt cutter
Window hammer
Electrical tape
Reusable zip ties
Lint roller (great for finding ticks on your clothes)
First-Aid kit
Maintenance of your vehicle can be more important than what you carry in it. Having tires with proper tread based on your location, changing your oil at appropriate intervals, and knowing how to drive your vehicle in the scenarios you enter far outweigh having flashy things. The abilities to start your battery if it dies and change your tire by yourself are powerful and can help you out of a bad situation. Do not be the person who drives into something they can't handle with a "what could happen" attitude and then not be able to get yourself out of it. If you want to learn, ask your friends. I have never had anyone scoff at me or not want to help when I have asked for it. And this is coming from someone who never knew anything about RVs and then randomly decided to purchase one to live in. There was a BIG learning curve, which came with the #1 ability I carry: the ability to humble myself and ask for help. You don't have to be an obsessive "car guy" to know how to take care of your own. Also, I know it's fun to have the flashy mods on your car, but don't prioritize those over the useful ones. Function over aesthetic, always. If you were hoping for some car camping advice, it's not something I've tried for myself yet. I would love to, I just have yet to set up my truck bed properly to try it out. I suggest going on YouTube or Facebook and checking out some of the car camping groups. There is plenty of information out there!
I'm sure plenty of people survive their outings just fine without all this. . . stuff. And that's fine. These are just suggestions. Now on to some other safety details.
Remember how I said at the beginning of part 1, that everyone always asks: "aren't you scared out there all alone?" Many of those people are referring to one thing in particular, which is the wildlife. I am not going to delve too far into this, because the topic can vary SO much. The wildlife in Florida is different from the wildlife in Virginia, which is different from the wildlife in Colorado, which is different from the wildlife in southern Arizona, etc. The most important thing is to research the area you are camping or hiking in. The second most important thing to remember is: don't touch the wildlife. You are not a Disney princess. You are not Steve Irwin. Distance is your friend. If you're in bear country, you carry the bear spray, you read about what to do if you encounter bears, and you properly store food or any smelly items you may have in a bear box, or in a tree. If you're in the desert, you research what to do for snake bites or scorpion stings. I refuse to go to Florida ever again, so I have zero advice for you on the gators, snakes, and spiders there (Kidding. . . mostly). Research local plants so you can identify poisonous plants such as Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac. Many years ago, just walking my dogs on a normal sidewalk in Georgia - where I had no idea to avoid fiery red ants - resulted in both my dog and myself needing to chug Benadryl when we got home because we ended up so covered in hives. This is all to answer the question: No, most of the time I'm not scared of the wildlife. Occasionally, I will get into my own head, because I've listened to too many episodes of Tooth and Claw Podcast on mountain lion attacks, and I will start to freak myself out on a hike. But I just endure and continue until the fear eases. Animal attacks are rare. People are scarier. I choose the bear. I'm happy to go more into the topic of wildlife if any readers have specific questions, please drop a line!
Now for a brief touch on the weather, because I am not an expert on the subject. The good news is you don't have to be an expert to stay safe. I tend to drive to regions based on the weather, as I'm least happy when it's under 45 degrees and I'm surrounded by wet, slushy snow. I grew up and spent 20 years in Pennsylvania before spending a winter in another state, and once I realized I could do that, I now plan to continue to do that. The main component to weather safety is to stay aware of the expected weather to come. If you're in an area where weather is unpredictable, it's best to stay prepared for all possibilities. It's okay to cancel your hike if there is a thunderstorm or too much wind.
Some people love cold weather camping, but I am not one of them. Camping and hiking in cold weather doesn't change your preparation much. You should just have gear that is built for it, such as a sleeping bag meant for colder temperatures than you will be sleeping in. Waterproof footwear will keep your feet healthy. We discussed how important carrying layers of clothing is, and it matters just as much for cold weather. The materials you choose can mean staying wet and miserable, or drying quickly and keeping warm. As much as I love natural fibers, cotton is not your friend in wet (or sweaty) weather. Choose your sleeping spot based on the shelter it provides from wind, and double your sleeping pads for extra insulation from the cold ground. Knowing the signs of hypothermia and frostbite are imperative. If it's too cold for you to personally have fun in, maybe just wait for warmer weather. If you're seriously interested, there are courses you can take that will prepare you for emergencies such as avalanches.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I do have experience with the heat. Layering your clothing is still important to protect yourself from sun rays, and there are even shirts you can buy with UV protection built in. Hydration is so important, and I'm a firm believer if you run out of water, you turn around. I always have more than enough water so I can enjoy myself and not cut it short. Carry sunscreen with you and reapply. Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and how to treat. I do suggest if you're in an area that has extreme heat, to work yourself up by starting earlier in the morning before the sun rises. When in hotter months, if I'm going to be hiking well past sunrise, my dog doesn't come with me. It's not worth burning her paws on the hot rocks or sand.
On the subject of listening to too many podcasts, let's talk about natural disasters. There are many stories out there about hikers and climbers being struck by lightning. But it's not always feasible to wait out the inclement weather if you're already out there in the altitude or miles away from shelter. When choosing campsites in an area known for adverse weather, you can avoid being next to water or isolated trees that may attract a strike. If you are hiking and notice signs of a storm moving in, avoid peaks and wide-open fields. The safest options, aside from a building or a vehicle, are ditches and areas below tree lines, and be sure to ditch your metal gear. Tents, picnic shelters, or standing beside the tallest tree will not protect you. There are plenty of natural disasters that can occur, and though it doesn't help to be anxious all the time about what COULD happen, it can give you peace of mind to do a little bit of research to have an idea what to do if a situation might arise. People often think "it won't happen to me." Taking proactive steps to prepare yourself is staying as safe as possible without missing out on the things you want to do. Knowledge is confidence.
I hope between the first and second parts of this solo safety series you were able to pick up some new information to apply to your next adventure. I have found that I learn something new every day doing this, and the information is limitless! Please reach out if during your reading you had an idea for me to cover, or a question to answer.
