The Soviet ship Kasimov removes 15 Soviet Ilyushin Il-28 aircraft from Cuba (October/November 1962).  The USSR was in the process of providing them for local assembly in Cuba, but this was halted by the missile crisis, and Khrushchev agreed to remove them.

A Soviet submarine near the Cuban coast controls the withdrawal of Soviet missiles in accordance with the US-USSR agreement (November 10th, 1962).  American planes and helicopters flew at a low level to keep watch on the dismantling and loading operations, and Americans warships watched over Soviet freighters carrying the missiles back to the USSR.

Cuba continued

Wednesday 15 March On Sunday morning we were driven by coach from the little port of Casilda to the town of Trinidad, a town founded in 1514, and now the most preserved colonial centre in Cuba. The cultivation of sugar cane began in the surrounding area in the 1700s and created a coterie of wealthy sugar barons who built magnificent estates in the outlying Valle de los Ingenios. These barons also built mansions in the town and imported thousands of African slaves to work the fields. When the price of sugar fell in the 1860s, Trinidad drifted into obscurity. As a result it escaped further development, a blessing in disguise in that the colonial centre remains intact. Trinidad's streets are cobbled, using stones which came as ballast in the ships which returned to Spain filled with sugar. It was a pleasure to walk around the streets full of pretty pastel coloured 18th and 19th century houses both large and small. It feels like a town where local people live rather than a museum, and there was plenty of evidence this. We visited a local artist who carves portraits in local reclaimed wood. His subjects are always elderly local people as he says the their faces reflect their long experience of life's joys and sorrows. The portraits were remarkably lifelike and beautifully carved, full of tiny facial details. The artist's wife belongs to a co-operative of women who are dedicated to continuing the local tradition of drawn thread needlework, and crochet work. She showed us examples of the different stages of the process, certainly a labour of love. Unfortunately I have no need of table cloths or runners, or crocheted shawls as I would have liked to support her by buying something. The local women also make lovely little children's clothes using crochet work and hand embroidery. Many of the houses had little shops in the front room opening onto the street, and behind this room we could see the families going about their daily lives in living areas which are small and quite impoverished. However Cubans are immensely positive and industrious and everywhere we have been so far the people we have encountered have been friendly and uncomplaining. One thing which has struck me everywhere we have been is that music is an integral part of life here. There are often elderly men sitting of the step of their house, playing a guitar, every restaurant has had live music, and all sorts of wooden percussion instruments are sold everywhere. When we got to the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the old town, the harmony of hymns filled the square, pouring out of Iglesias Santa Ana as Sunday Mass was celebrated.

Satisfacción general en ‘Toril del Almendro’, en la apretada mancha de ‘Hamapega’, con la familia García.

Satisfacción general en ‘Hamapega’ con la familia García, esta difícil mancha alcanzó su récord de abates (39).

Llegábamos a Guadalcanal quien suscribe acompañado de Alberto Covarsí, para cerrar la temporada montera en Andalucía junto a la familia García.

Nos habían dado cita para cazar la afamada finca del Toril del Almendro.

Al llegar, muchas caras conocidas, saludos abrazos y encuentros con monteros que sorprendidos por no ser zona de caza habitual por nuestra parte, pero allí estábamos.

Alberto Covarsí, a la izquierda, no faltó a la cita con la familia García.

‘Hamapega’, una mancha apretada

Tras desayunar en el Mesón del Perdigón, y allí mismo, se ultimaban los preparativos para el sorteo de las 57 posturas.

Apretada mancha esta de Hamapega.

Extensa sierra de apretadas coscojas y jaras blancas que coronan la parte de olivares del pueblo y besadas por un sopié de retamas antesala de una gran dehesa que guarda gratas sorpresas de venado.

Tras las palabras de Moisés García y José Luis Bonilla, como jefe de campo, comenzaba, tras el rezo correspondiente por los monteros fallecidos, el sorteo de posturas.

Se habían separado puestos de fácil acceso por lo complicado de la mancha, para aquellos que tuvieran dificultades a la hora de andar.

Poco a poco fueron nombrados todos los presentes, completándose las armadas de La Antena, El Tubo, La Charca, Las Parras…

Tras finalizar, y con un sol espléndido, comenzaron a distribuir a los monteros para la salida hacia los puestos.

Era necesario cerrar diligentemente, dado que, a pesar de la dureza de la mancha en la parte más alta, en el sopié, formado por retamas, se mueve realmente fácil el ‘ganado’, por lo que había que cerrar rápido y en silencio.

Así, daban las indicaciones y comenzaban la partida de las armadas.

Reses que se vacían y tiros antes de soltar

Aun así, por la dehesa se observaba con la colocación del cierre que se salían cinco venados juntos ya del cazadero y por la parte opuesta ídem de ídem, con una piara de 14 jabalíes que, encamados en el retamal, se habían olido la que se avecinaba.

No fue necesario que entrasen las rehalas para que se produjeran los primeros lances, así, el mejor venado de la montería se abatía en el cierre de La Parra antes de que entrasen las traviesas.

Más de 30 detonaciones se habían escuchado, sobre todo en la parte más cercana a la casa de la finca, antes de soltar.

Las rehalas abrieron portones a las 12:00 y comenzaron su ardua batalla con esta exigente mancha, cazando al choque esta alargada sierra.

La temperatura y el día de sol justiciero de febrero no iba a facilitar el trabajo a los canes, que sumado a la escasez de agua en la parte superior de la mancha complicaba de sobremanera su empeño en sacar los jabalíes de sus encames.

Como las ferias, desigual

La montería estuvo como las ferias, la parte de la casa se quemaba las pestañas con lances y ladras sin cese, desde el mismo momento de la suelta.

Sin embargo, la suelta de Las Antenas estuvo algo más descafeinada, levantando un venado que era abatido en el Sopié, y dos inmensas cochinas abatidas en el 4 y el 5 de la armada de El Tubo…

En una mancha en la que era de elogiar el mero tránsito de perros y perreros. ¡Olé su trabajo!

Fueron rebuscando poco a poco todos los recovecos de la agreste sierra empeñándose en sacar lo que allí se escondía hasta llegar al choque con las rehalas de la otra suelta, repartiendo lances a los afortunados monteros a quienes cumplían las reses.

La batalla entre perros, reses y monteros estaba servida y los venados dieron su juego.

Al amigo Mariano se le marchaba un señor venado por la armada de La Charca, seguido de un jabalí. Está claro que no era su día.

Otro venado de gran porte se marchaba herido y no fue posible su cobro, a pesar de seguir la sangre durante más de un kilómetro.

En un puesto del cierre de La Parra se fallaba un venado y un jabalí, abatiendo un segundo venado y un segundo jabalí.

Y es que ésta finca es de las de andar de uñas, con tiraderos escasitos, con puestos cerrados y tensión máxima, por lo que es comprensible los numerosos fallos entre los monteros, aunque también hubo aciertos como era de esperar.

Una cacería heroica para los perreros

Los perros permanecieron en su empeño tras las reses de principio a fin, con tramos de mancha durísimos donde los perreros tenían que caminar «de gatas» porque el monte no les permitía hacerlo erguidos.

Toda una cacería a la heroica.

Sobre las 15:30 volvían los perreros a los remolques literalmente reventados, dejando atrás a muchos de sus guerreros que seguían rastros y haciendo levantes dentro de la espesura, pero era hora de retirar a los monteros y disfrutar de una buena comida.

Satisfacción general y récord de capturas

Allí esperaba el amigo Juan, con su clásico catering en el que no faltó de nada mientras comenzaba el trabajo de sacar las reses del espeso montarral.

Sentados a la mesa los monteros comentaban sus lances, unos acertados, otros fallidos, pero en líneas generales todos satisfechos mientras fueron llegando al cortijo los remolques con las primeras reses.

Finalmente se sacaron al plantel un total de 29 jabalíes, cinco venados y cinco ciervas, consiguiendo así el récord de animales abatidos en esta finca.

En cuanto a la calidad, destacar seis buenos navajeros y el enorme tamaño de las jabalinas, por lo que los monteros se servían de la ocasión para inmortalizarse junto a ellas por el gran porte de las mismas.

De los cinco venados había tres bonitos y dos de montería, una pena se fueran los mejores que se tenían vistos desde ya hacía bastante tiempo, pero esto de la caza en abierto es así.

La tónica general fueron caras de satisfacción en el cierre de la temporada en Andalucía junto a grandes personas y en una entretenida jornada, con monteros que, a pesar de ser domingo, aguantaron hasta tarde en el cortijo.

Trabajo encomiable de las rehalas y agradecimiento

Subrayar, sin duda, el trabajo encomiable que hicieron todas las rehalas, las de Cazalla, Guadalcanal, Sevilla y Huelva. Sin ellos no habría montería, un trabajo duro.

Mencionar a la rehala del Lunes que falleció su padre hace muy poco tiempo, el gran Lunes que fue uno de los grandes maestros de la zona en cuanto a monterías.

Destacar a la familia Pinelo por todo el trabajo realizado, en especial a Ana que bregó bien duro.

Al amigo José María, la voz de la sierra.

A don Luismi Baez que se presentó allí recién operado de apéndice.

Los incombustibles Miriam y Miguel que tuvieron que volver a por un perro al día siguiente después de estar media noche allí esperándolo, y a todos los demás que me quedo para atrás por ser imposible nombrar.

Agradecer también desde la organización a David Mejías, Queco y José Chamorrín todo el trabajo realizado en este tiempo.

Y, por supuesto, al capitán de montería José Luis Bonilla. ¡Y los suyos!

Hacer también una mención especial por ver a tantos niños en esta montería, teniendo en vuestras manos una cantera que no se puede perder.

Places to see in ( Bilbao - Spain ) Bilbao, an industrial port city in northern Spain, is surrounded by green mountains. It’s the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which sparked revitalization when it opened in 1997.
