No Vettel comeback in Le Mans
The official entry list of this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans got published and Sebastian Vettel is not listed as one of the Porsche drivers. The third Porsche will be driven by three Porsche IMSA drivers, Felipe Nasr, Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy.
Thomas Laudenbach, head of Porsche motorsport, says that the main reason was that they searched for experienced drivers to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and because the modern hypercars are much more different compared with an F1 car, than the old LMP1, it would've been to early for Sebastian Vettel.

Isotta Fraschini WEC Hypercar team completes first run without a hitch | World Endurance Championship
The Isotta Fraschini team, which aims to participate in this year’s World Endurance Championship with its new Hypercar, says it has successfully completed a two day run of its Tipo 6 LMH machine. The historic Italian manufacturer whose team is operated by Vector Sport – which already runs an LMP2 entry in the championship – completed a two-day test at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy over Tuesday and Wednesday. Michelotto Engineering test driver Maurizio Mediani was at the wheel. The team intends to join other LMH entries to WEC this year – Ferrari, Porsche, Vanwall and Cadillac – which have arrived to compete against existing manufacturers Toyota, Peugeot and Glickenhaus. However, Isotta Fraschini have only been permitted to join the championship on a race-by-race basis, rather than a full season entry. The team will not compete in June’s Le Mans 24 Hours but may have the opportunity to compete in this year’s championship in the later rounds. That effort will have been boosted by the team completing its first run with its new Hypercar, the Tipo 6. The team reported on social media the two-day test had been completed “without a hitch”. Its motorsport managing director Claudio Berro said the team’s first laps with its hybrid system passed without issue. “The first time of our car with wheels on the asphalt is obviously an exciting sensation for everyone,” said Berro, “starting with the technicians who built it who were present and thus finally saw it on the track. The team completed two days of running “For all of us it was a good moment also because the day went according to plan, with major stops to fine-tune the car and analyse the data. I would say the last few laps with the hybrid system activated completed the first day with satisfaction for all.” Vector Sport team principal Gary Holland said he hoped the team’s successful run would help their bid to join the championship in the later rounds of the season. “The first roll-out of the test car that went relatively trouble-free and that’s very impressive,” Holland said. “We’re now looking forward to get the performance-running done and hopefully the homologation process, looking forward to the race-by-race entry until the end of the year. “I hope the ACO [Automobile Club de l’Ouest – Le Mans organisers] can see the effort and the trajectory we’re on and can grant us the entry, so we can go and compete against the other LMH teams.” The second round of the WEC season, the Six Hours of Portimao, takes place this weekend at the Autodromo do Algarve circuit in Portugal. Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines - 20th January 2022
F1
There is uncertainty about the Sprint Race format for this year’s season, apparently there have been disagreements over the money that the teams will receive for doing them. As I said before, I have no strong opinion either way about them, they do bring more action, but also take something away from the main race, so let’s see what happens.
McLaren have confirmed that talks have taken place with the VW Group, over a potential link up in 2026, when Audi and Porsche may join the sport. VW are looking at the new engine regulations as an opportunity to come into F1, and will either use their Audi brand to give McLaren engines, or Porsche to give Red Bull engines. Either option would be great news for the sport, as having 4 engines manufacturers is the ideal position for F1, and bringing in one of those iconic brands to F1, would boost the sport in many ways.
For those who haven’t seen the released launch dates for the F1 teams, Aston Martin will be first on the 10th of February, followed by McLaren on the 11th, then Ferrari will be on the 17th with Mercedes the day after, a few days before pre-season testing begins.
IndyCar
Daly is back at Ed Carpenter Racing once again with year; however, he is doing the full season with them. Ed will still do the ovals, but in a third car now. This multiyear deal gives great security to Conor, who can hopefully thrive now in the sport. His sponsor is a cryptocurrency company, Bitnile.
Tatiana Calderon will race the road and street courses for AJ Foyt Racing, which will be 12 rounds this year. The car will be sponsored by ROKiT, and it is brilliant to see a woman back in IndyCar, which has often been the most diverse sport between men and women, although there is still a long way to go. I am sure she will do well too, given her exploits in Europe.
Various drivers have said that they want the next generation of IndyCar to be lighter than the current one, Dixon especially was quite damning, saying it feels like a junior formula car. They all seem to want a more agile and quick car, which took a back seat for the new regulations in 2018, with dirty air and looks being more important. I do think the drivers are right, however, the sport needs to get the balance right, as it could easily swing to far one way.
Formula E
The official Safety Car for the all-electric series will now be a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which takes over from the Mini which only lasted one season.
India has been announced as a potential venue for the 2022/23 season, with Hyderabad being the suggested location. Given the population of India, it would be a smart move to try and enter that market, and see if it will stick.
Other News
The Peugeot LMh car has been teased whilst testing at the Aragon circuit, the most striking part is the lack of a rear wing on the car, which is unlike the other LMh cars we have seen. It will be interesting to see how close Peugeot are to Toyota straight out of the blocks, especially with performance balancing.
Porsche too have been testing their new LMDh car, at their own testing track in Germany. The car was decked out in camo paint, to try and hide the exact shape of the bodywork. The test was apparently positive, and given they have a year to prepare for racing, they do seem very well prepared.

Porsche & Team Penske to Collaborate in Motorsports
Porsche Motorsport and Team Penske have agreed to collaborate closely in fielding the new LMDh vehicle commencing in 2023. The successful US team will work together with the experts from Weissach to run factory entries in the FIA WEC World Endurance Championship and the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC).
Under the name of Porsche Penske Motorsport, two of the spectacular LMDh prototypes will compete for overall victories in the top class of each of the two racing series. The contract between the sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart and the US racing team, which was founded in 1966, will run for a number of years. A statement to this effect was signed by Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development and Roger Penske, Chairman of Team Penske.
Beginning in 2023, the LMDh vehicles will represent the very best in endurance racing together with so-called hypercars (LMH). The prototypes will also be entered by Porsche customer teams in both championships as early as 2023. The cars, which weigh approximately 1,000 kilograms and are based on an LMP2 chassis, are powered by a 500 kW (680 PS) hybrid drivetrain.
"We are delighted that we were able to get Team Penske to form this partnership," says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. "For the first time in the history of Porsche Motorsport, our company will have a global team competing in the world's two largest endurance series. To this end, we will be setting up team bases on both sides of the Atlantic. This will enable us to create the optimal structures we will need to take overall victories at Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring, for example."
"As of 2023, Porsche will compete in the major endurance racing series. Our intention is to support and shape the new era with our LMDh prototypes," Michael Steiner, Board Member for Research and Development, emphasizes. "Not only will we be keeping our fingers crossed for the four factory cars we have in total, but also for our customer teams. The new LMDh vehicle will also be entered as a customer car in both series as early as the 2023 season. These partner teams will be given our full support. Whatever insights we gain from our factory effort will also be shared with them."
"Porsche and Penske share a proven track record of success. This partnership had a lasting impact from 2006 to 2008 on what was then the American Le Mans Series," says Fritz Enzinger, Head of Porsche Motorsport, delighted about the renewed collaboration with the US team. "Team Penske has made a name for itself with an almost unparalleled success story in motorsport. In the long list of victories to date, however, the name Le Mans has been missing. I hope that we will finally be able to chalk up this success as of 2023 with Porsche Penske Motorsport. This would then mark Porsche's 20th overall victory at the Sarthe - a dream come true."
With the Porsche RS Spyder, Team Penske had taken all the titles in the LMP2 class for three years in succession between 2006 and 2008, beating the faster LMP1 prototypes multiple times. Back in the 1970s, the US-based team had already been extremely successful with the legendary Porsche 917 in the Can-Am series.
“This is a proud day for our entire Penske organization. We have represented Porsche on the track or in our businesses for more than six decades. The heritage and success we have enjoyed together is unparalleled throughout our history,” comments Roger Penske. “I can’t wait to get started as we build a global racing program with Porsche that will compete for wins and championships well into the future.”
Porsche Motorsport will be operating a team base in the USA together with Team Penske at the American team's headquarters in Mooresville in the State of North Carolina.

Vanwall presents its road-going Vandervell 1000
Zapping The Blogauto Test of the Cupra Born in Lapland Originally, the Hypercar regulations were to make the production of a series car mandatory in order to be able to homologate the racing prototype. A bit like the GT1 regulations, or like what Dauer had done with the Porsche 962, we were salivating in advance. Except that this rule jumped and now no need for a road car to compete in LMH (and…

Peugeot, Porsche, Ferrari…here are their hypercars
In the WEC World Endurance Championship, this year 2022 has been marked by the entry into force of new regulations in which the LMP1 category is replaced by the Hypercar class. The corresponding cars, less efficient than their predecessors, are themselves of two types. On the one hand, the LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) that can be designed from A to Z by manufacturers. On the other, the LMDh (Le Mans…

Vettel for Porsche in Le Mans 2024?
Sebastian Vettel was testing the Penske Porsche 963 on the Porsche test track in Weissach on thursday. And without much preparation, he instantly was only a bit slower than Porsche WEC main driver Laurens Vanthoor. Porsche seems to be extremely astonished by Vettels speed and professionalism. He will also drive a 36 hour endurance test in Aragon next week. And Vettel said "we will see hot it continues afterwards."
A research of the trusted german motorsport website motorsport-total.com has found out that Vettel seems to be very interested, exactly as Porsche, to bring Vettel to Le Mans this year. If they decide for it, it's very likely that he will also race in the WEC race in Spa, because in Spa and Le Mans there will be a third Penske Porsche on the track, and right now only one driver (Mathieu Jaminet) is confirmed for the third car.

CALENDARIO PROVISIONAL – FIA WEC 2022
12-13 de marzo: Prólogo oficial (Sebring, Estados Unidos)
18 de marzo: 1000 Millas de Sebring
7 de mayo: 6 Horas de Spa-Francorchamps
11 y 12 de junio: 24 Horas de Le Mans
10 de julio: 6 Horas de Monza

Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines - 12th January 2022
F1
Amid talk of an increase to the budget cap for 2022, because of the 6 sprint races which are scheduled to happen, and the possible crash damage those could incur, McLaren have come out saying they are opposed to any increase to the cap. According to Brown, some teams want to raise the budget by quite some way. Personally, I think that around the $150 million mark is about right, so if it is raised slightly, I won’t bat an eyelid. However, it is the same for everyone so it shouldn’t really matter, but I think this shows that McLaren still have money issues.
Hulkenberg has come out saying that the new cars for 2022 are quick, but suggested that following other cars is not as good as had been hoped, or proposed when the new regulations were brought in. This doesn’t surprise me, as F1 teams will always find ways to work around new rules, but it will be a shame if all the hard work to make the cars better is undone. Let’s hope there is at least some improvement in the racing.
IndyCar
Montoya will return for the 500 again this year, once again with Arrow McLaren SP. He didn’t really do anything of note in 2021, but that was more down to the issues that Chevrolet and the team had at that track. I am sure that if he gets a car to win, he will make the most of it.
It sounds like Pagenaud is settling in well to his new team, with good pace being shown by him in a test at Sebring. His engineer is impressed too, and thinks that the move to a smaller team may be good for him.
Formula E
Huge news for the sport, as Maserati returns to single seater racing in 2023, in the form of the all-electric series. It is part of a push by the company to go electric, and they are planning on teaming up with a team to run their operation. This is great for Formula E, as it saves some face after the exit of so many big names from the sport. What they need to do now is ensure that manufacturers like Maserati stay around for the long term.
Other News
The line up for WEC season in 2022 has been released, with a massive 39 car full season grid. This beats the previous record of 36 a few years ago. Apart from the 2 Peugeots, which make up a 6 car LMH grid, the other big story is the conformation of the Penske LMP2 car coming over to Europe. This is undoubtedly preparation work for the future, when Penske will run the Porsche LMDH operation, both in the US and in Europe.
The other interesting piece of news, is that a Bykolles LMH car was rejected from the WEC series for this year. This must be down to its legality in some way, as they are desperate for more cars in the top class. I guess that they should be ready in time for 2023, but it is still surprising to hear something like this happen.
1997 F1 champion, Jacques Villeneuve, will contest the Daytona 500 in mid-February. In a rather last minute deal, he will drive for Team Hezeberg for the race, in his second attempt to start the race, his last being in 2008. If no more than 40 cars show up for the race, he will be guaranteed a spot in the race, however, he may have to race his way in otherwise, which won’t be easy in racing as chaotic as we get at Daytona.
