Am I the only one who finds the new chocolate guy videos insufferable?

They used to be calm, showing the process step by step, leading up to the reveal

Now they're so snappy, so cut together, it feels very distracting. I wasn't watching because it looked "satisfying" or some other bullshit, I was watching because the things he did were impressive and interesting.

Now they're just overly edited, too fast and too focused on the boring parts (instead of the interesting techniques he uses for details)

The secret Dungeon Meshi sauce that's getting people to eat better is that it's so non-judgmental. Senshi and the rest of the gang never talk about what not to eat besides things that taste bad and literal poison. They don't even talk about "health" that much besides the importance of a balanced diet. It's so much easier to eat well when you think of food simply as something your body needs, and that it's often worth the extra effort to make it taste good, especially when you understand how to connect "things your body needs" with "things that taste good"

The funniest thing is, you might ask the question, "How did no one realize sooner?" Especially in the biggest cases of fraud that spanned years.

One of these, concerning Jan Hendrik Schön, the answer to that was that everyone just assumed he was doing legit research.

Nobody could recreate his results. But they assumed they were doing something wrong. Nobody had ever seen the inventions he described, but they all assumed he showed them to someone

Whenever someone asked a question about some inconsistency in his papers he would play dumb and add whatever he was asked about into his next paper

He did that for 2 years. In that time he released a new paper on average every 3 weeks.

But it took so long to expose him. Partially because, unlike a lot of fraudsters, he was generally nice to people

Scientific fraud is the most baffling thing ever to me like do they think they're just going to make a huge breakthrough and no one will notice that it's fake by trying to replicate their results

I remember years ago I was on a group vacation with my mum and her coworkers with their families. One of my classmates was there, and she was one of the only two people there around my age

I talked to her maybe twice over the span of 9 days. I spent most of the time either reading or playing cards with the adults

My mum was surprised, and kind of annoyed at me. I told her I didn't have anything to talk about with the classmate, even though technically that wasn't true. We had some shared interests, I distinctly remember talking with her about Sims

I also remember her withdrawing from the conversation, kind of. I didn't know why. In hindsight, I probably dumped too much information and overwhelmed her

To this day, I struggle with this. I've gotten better, I try to notice when people get distant in the conversation and I consciously switch topics or ask questions to try to get them to talk.

(that often doesn't work. If I were to guess, I catch on too late sometimes)

I have few friends. But I'm undeniably closest with my best friend because we're both like this. I have been exposed to more media than I can list just through listening to them infodump, and vice versa

With another friend, who admittedly isn't on that level, but gets very invested in his passions, I have a similar dynamic. That mostly works because we've known each other so long that it's hard to take offense to anything that happens in conversation.

When I look at all this, I finally realize. Talking to new people, or those I'm just not close to, isn't just stressful due to social anxiety. It's also exhausting, because it's like a minefield. Everything I say I have to screen for whether I'm saying it correctly and at the right time.

The number of times I've had a family member say I'm saying weird things is astounding. Other people typically don't say it to my face, which makes it so much harder to know whether I've broken a social rule.

It feels like a lot of baggage. And building a mutual understanding that makes people more compatible conversationally feels like pure luck

Btw I was talking to Kiddo about social rules because we're both autistic and it doesn't come naturally to either of us but I have 25 years experience on them so I have some useful tips

And as proof of that: in that conversation I realised what neurotypicals mean when they say we "make everything about us"

When they're talking and we interject "fun facts" or start talking about something related to what they're saying we mean:

"I am showing interest in you and your interests by engaging with them and showing I'm listening by adding information"

From their perspective we are stomping over their turn to talk and making it our turn and therefore making it about us

Conversation example:

NT: my favourite animal is sharks

Autistic person: with some sharks species the shark pup that hatches first hunts the others and eats them while being incubated inside the mother

Autistic person perspective: I have shown interest in you by giving you information about a topic you have shown interest in

NT person's perspective: wow they made my favourite animal a time for them to show off instead of letting me talk when it was my turn

It's doesn't matter if it's "on topic" or "relevant to the person" if it's when it's their turn to be the focus of the conversation

Like I know there is a bit more to it but this is the first time in 39 years I have understood the accusation "you're making this all about yourself"

Also like to headcanon that Stan spews out random pig facts when he's bored because that's what helps him fully retain knowledge

Eurasian magpies are such assholes (affectionate). And I respect them enough to know that they're fully aware of what they're doing.

There are magpies living near my apartment. At one point one pair nested close by my window, but they've since moved slightly further. However, magpies continue to taunt my cat whenever they can.

If the cat is locked inside, they will sit on the balcony. If he's on the balcony, they will choose the nearest tree and caw from there.

They always make sure to stay safe, but they will be dead before they let my cat forget that they are in control

The voter turnout in this election was 10 percentage points higher than it was in 1989, which was the first free election in Poland since World War II

I can't get over how incredible that is

Turnout for people aged 18-29 increased by 20 percentage points

I had lost nearly all hope in the presidential election three years ago, but I was so wrong, and I am so happy I was wrong

We'll be okay. Maybe not good, not immediately for sure. But we're on the right path.

even without the family issues, dib already has this kind of thing going on where he (for good reason!) believes he knows better than most anyone else, at least in regards to Knowing The Truth about things. which. is a really scary and lonely feeling, thinking that you can't rely on anyone else in that way.

and then you combine that with the fact that he can't really rely on his only parent for much... like, there's a roof over his head, there's food on the table, etc. but he can never rely on his father to be on his side, ever :( he knows he's totally alone in the battles he fights. so he really does have to be his own parent in this way.

not to mention, like...... the general life stuff that parents are supposed to impart on their kids. how to do laundry. how to scramble an egg. how to mop. what to do when you feel sad. what to do when someone's bullying you at school. and i, at least, get the sense that membrane isn't really around for those lessons. so dib has to learn it all by himself :(

AND GAZ!!! gaz. i love you gaz. she, too, is smarter than any of her peers and teachers and etc, which is incredibly isolating in itself. but she also, arguably unlike dib, has this layer of misanthropy. and to be a misanthrope is to be alone. she is an island.

and the tempting idea might be to say that gaz, at least, has her older brother. that dib can help her with the things dad doesn't. that dib takes the worst of it and uses it to help make things easier for her. and to that i say...... maybe somewhat, but don't count on it.

because like, dib WANTS to be a good older brother. but he is 12. a very traumatized, neglected, and mentally ill 12 year old, at that. if the age gap were bigger, maybe we could expect more of dib stepping up to raise gaz. but as it is, he's still learning how to be a person, let alone how to be a decent person and a good older sibling. yknow??? gaz has to be her own parent just as much as dib does.

another thing i wonder about a lot is like...... who's making sure they get out the door on time every morning? is that something membrane does, or is he at work by the time they wake up, just trusting them to do it on their own? are they hanging out home alone after school every day? is that okay? who's making sure they keep up with homework and feeding themselves and keeping their rooms clean and going to bed on time? does membrane ever think to check on these things?
