Dropkick on my Devil!
邪ちゃんドロップキック
(Anime + Manga)
Supernatural slpastick by Yukiwo
Era: 2010s/ 20s
Rating: S
Plot: Yurine, a gothic lolita, finds in a used bookstore a grimoire with an ritual to summon a devil. She succeeds in summoning an ancient demon called Jashinchan, a girl with blond Lady Godiva hair in two bowties and the bottom part of a snake. However, she has no plans other than to see if she could, and both discover without a return spell, the only option left is for Jashin-chan to try to dropkick Yurine to death. Easier said than done, since Yurine can easily overpower her and doesn't take lightly to her attempts.
Length: ongoing (time of writing, around 270 chapters and 37 episodes)
Thoughts: The show that Tumblr made me watch because I really wanted to know the context for this, and I'm glad I did. What a collection of characters, you have Jashin-chan, a gremlin with (between other things) a gambling problem, an habit to store food to eat later and then forgetting about it, to loan money and abuse her friends, and trying to kill Yurine, all behaviours she finds abhorrent and punishes her violently for. They are joined by Medusa, Jashin-chan's kind childhood friend (or even more than that) and primary enabler of her gambling habits, Minos, her other childhood friend, an energetic and hard working minotaur with a penchant for eating beef and there's also Mei Tachibana, a kleptomaniac cop who really wants to have Jashin-chan, and the ice demons Yusa and Koji. Since there are demons, there must be also angels, like poor Pekora, an angel who lost her halo and consequently her powers and is now forced to work in several part-time jobs while living in a box on a park, but still too prideful to accept Yurine's help, believing she's a witch, at least until her stomach starts growling. Over time, you also get Poporon, one of her apprentices, who wants to kill her and take her place, and after having her halo eaten by Jashin-chan, both are on the run from Pino, a second apprentice sent to exterminate both for living between demons. Until she also loses her halo after being suplexed by Poporon, who wanted to steal, and now is afraid Lierre, their superior, has come to earth to punish them all.
It's a show that lives on throwing all these characters into a scenario and see how it plays out, and rarely fails at doing so, slowly expanding the cast to bring more chaos to the mixture. Early stories focus more on Jashin-chan doing something that annoys Yurine, which can go from trying to kill her, wasting their groceries money in pachinko, usually followed by mooching off poor Medusa, being rude (including pointing at her), and she's usually punished by being beaten up in an extreme way, but then we also get some stories of them just hanging out and some sweet moments like Jashin-chan getting a potion that gives her legs and Medusa some contact lenses that allow her to walk between people without a paper bag in her head and they go on a date, and by the second season Jashin-chan becomes less of a jerk but even more of a gremlin. The manga even has even incorporated going full meta into the story - Yusa and Tachibana lament having less time as more characters are added and not even appearing on the anime key art, and as the time of writing they teamed up with Jashin-chan's mom, who after beating them joins them to "spice things up". The adaptation uses some chapters but mostly does stuff that they found funny for the medium - a throwaway joke about a 6-verse song actually becomes a 10 minute song by the end of the following season, or adding Hatsune Miku cameos on the third season. It's probably my favourite ongoing series at the moment and it's not hard to see why it's one of the modern shows that can be called a true cult classic.
Recommended to: fans of unhinged gremlin behaviour
Plus:
They're all so cute together. Even when Jashin-chan is spending the dinner's money on pachinko and Yurine slices and serves her snake part like a ham.
Jashin-chan's range of expressions is something else
Minus:
The third season might feel a bit weird and a tourism board promotion, but just roll with it.

Just got done watching Dropkick On My Devil! Season 2...so, I did love the first season for what it was trying to be...mostly. Jashin-chan gets summoned by Yurine and tries to kill her in order to return to Hell but fails all the time. The bloody and gory punishments she inflicts on Jashin-chan are kind of repetitive at times and gets boring, but here was also the suffering of the fallen angel Pekola and her perpetual poverty that also could give a few laughs...if you like seeing the misfortune of a character.
The problem with the first season is it failed to really make the audience invested with the characters because it drops them into the middle of the story instead of properly introducing them. The second season does do this a little better as towards the midpoint of the season, it introduces another angel named Pino who tries to kill Pekola and Poporon to get a higher ranking in Heaven only to have her halo destroyed and get stuck on Earth where she now wants to get rid of the Lord, take over Heaven as the new god and then destroy the underworld and the human realm but works as a custodian opting to lay low until her halo regenerated. Then there's Kyon-Kyon and her sister; they are both Jangshi with the latter being cursed into the form of a panda bear.
Comedy-wise, they do have slightly less scenes of gore to illicit a chuckle instead taking jabs at how the name of the show should be renamed because Jashin-chan hardly does her signature dropkicks anymore. The humor is just as meta as the first season, maybe more so.
Animation's still passable. Nothing great but fits the feel of the anime. Voice work is fine, the opening and ending themes are pretty good..ultimately, the season does make small improvements here and there, but it's something that you shouldn't immediately go out of your way to watch.
It is available on Amazon Prime, but there are also streaming websites like KissAnime to watch it from if you do not have the time or effort of acquiring Amazon Prime.
