CLASH! Devlog, January 28, 2025 - Contest Reworks

Let's talk about how Contests have changed!

Perhaps the hardest lesson in game design, no matter your experience or skill, is that sometimes you must kill your darlings.

The Conflict Meter was a holdover from the game that originally inspired me to make CLASH! in the first place - a PbtA game that I haven't touched in years. It took many forms in its many iterations across games, and in each instance it fell short of what I wanted from it. Sometimes it failed to be the gravitational center of conflict; sometimes it allowed a fight to last forever; sometimes it could make a single encounter balloon in length with the addition of even a single character. It was re-inventing all the problems I hoped it would solve. I loved the Conflict meter; so I had to kill it.

In fact, I've removed "combat" as a bespoke mode of play entirely. Instead, I've split CLASH!'s resolution mechanic two ways - if you want to do something cool, you'll initiate a Skill Challenge. If you want to do something cool and Someone is Opposing You, you're initiating a Contest.

This creates a cascade of changes both great and small. For example:

NPCs can initiate Contests if you decide to oppose their actions

Contests are standalone, meaning that the act of fighting is much more freeform and integrated into the larger flow of play

It's no longer clear what, exactly, you're Bidding for

That last point is the most substantial change in my opinion, and my solution is an attempt to marry the story-based play and the more tactical elements of combat.

The way it works is this: Character A announces the action they want to take, as usual. The action in question has the following poperties:

its outcome is both uncertain and guaranteed to be dramatic

Character B is standing in the way of its completion

Once B has announced their intention to oppose A, then they both need to describe their goals. That is to say, they need to tell the table what will happen if they win the Contest. Fate veterans will benefit from thinking of this almost like an aspect - a phrase which concisely and clearly describes what winning and losing looks like in this scenario.

Fighters are encouraged to make their goals dramatic and proactive. Instead of "I want to stop Lord Skull from punching a hole in my stomach," for example, they could say, "I want to grab Lord Skull's fist as it comes for me and bury it to the shoulder in the mud, immobilizing him." Paired with Lord Skull's goal of "I want to punch a hole in this kid's stomach," we have a nice establishment of the stakes.

From here, the Contest proceeds largely as you're probably familiar with it - Bids, Counters and Techs. Now, Techniques have been reworked in their own right, but they're their own can of worms, and I'm determined to playtest their current iteration before I speak confidently about them. I've learned that lesson.

There are a couple smaller changes I should mention as well - for example, it's now possible to Bid more Points than are in your relevant Pool! Doing so will still win you the Contest if you pick a winning Pool - however, it comes at a cost, inflicting you with a Condition that will make further Contests harder for you.

This is part of the effort to balance out the first-move advantage built into Contests. I want Fighters to have a high-risk way to get out of a corner if they're the second one to Bid. This also, of course, adds further layers to the mind-games that Contests are built for.

Aku harus disadarkan oleh orang lain. Waktu itu, di momen setelah wisuda, banyak yang menerima bunga dari orang lain. Sebagian ada cokelatnya, lebih menarik lagi ada uangnya.

Sedangkan aku? Menatap door prize yang aku dapatkan. Aku kira isinya buku, ternyata bingkai foto. *sad banget.

Jadi, aku tak mudah luluh jika kamu datang membawa bunga. Tapi, berbeda jika kamu datang dengan buku, atau bahkan lebih senang jika kamu datang dengan tulisan yang kamu rangkai.

formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?

In general Wolfs formal clothes look like her normal day-today clothes just with a little more details. In Wolfs case she has a few chemise that she can change everyday that are just simply long -sleeved undyed linen dresses whichs sleeves she usually pulls up with leathercands. Her normal -day-to-day-dress is a anklelong red tunic with a round neckline, elbowlong sleeves so they would not get dirty during work like the chemise sleeves, and a embroidered blue stripe of cloth around the collar, the sleeves, the edge of the dress and two stripes running vertically from her collar to the edge of the dress over the front of the tunic. Wolf lives in Italy, so her clothes are distinctively byzantine in style. Her formal clothes, which is just in general her weddingdress- looks similar to her normal-day-to-day dress just with more details. This tunic is blue with red details and in the red stripes are embroidered with red threads flower-patterns in whichs middle are sewn sweetwaterpearls. And thats it about it. There is barely any difference in her normal tunic and her formal wear, as she is a not especially rich person-in fact she lives in a convent and literally has no property- so it is shown in the simpleness of her clothes. She does not even has a veil for her hair, which for one she does not need because she is still unmarried and lives in a convent, but also she is as said not a rich person spcifically in Pisa so she is also not expected in the sligthest to wear a veil like a noblewoman would have to in another town and country. For Wolf with her social background clothes are a statussymbol and while she shows in her formal dress that she is trying to show what she has in poperty, the pearls on her dress are still cheap sweetwaterpearls and the embroidery is still made by her- its beautiful, as Wolf is a skilled seamstress and weaver- but it is clearly ot especially expensive. For her clothes are for one the statussymbol and also a pragmatic tool because she needs clothes for protection, so she does not dress up or has fun in it. It is just something she has to do and when the occaion calls for it, she will wear the other dress instead of her normal day-to-day dress and thats about it. There is a certaine arrogant streak to that: she does wear her hair long and she does has spend a lot of time embroideirng her formal dress t oshow that she is a person that can clean up nicely and has (the illusion of) property, but it is not in a feeling of "feeling beautiful and showing that she is beautiful", but more in aiming that "she has worth and is allowed to take part in society because of that worth that is clearly visible in her fine little dress".

Biodata Sederhana Tentang Aku

Setiap hari aku menikmati pagi dengan melihat langit jingga di antara kabut gunung, meminum secangkir kopi dengan dikelilingi udara yang bersih, Aku suka tempat yang biasa saja dan kebetulan aku tinggal di tempat yang seperti itu.

Aku lahir dari keluarga yang bekerja di pemerintahan, dan kedua buyut seorang petani, mungkin keluargaku beruntung karna mereka selalu bekerja keras, sejak kecil aku selalu dapat uang jajan yang sedikit karna ayahku seorang pegawai biasa dan dia menggunakan uang gajinya untuk investasi poperti, dia punya program di masa hidupnya, walau dengan banyak cicilan di bank. Sejak kecil aku berteman dengan orang sederhana karna keuanganku yang terbatas, ayahku seorang pegawai biasa yang memberi uang jajan kecil, walau bertahun-tahun keluargaku bisa melunasi cicilan di bank. Waktu smp aku suka jalan kaki bersama teman-teman dari pada bayar ojeg, karna aku suka jajan cemilan, aku lebih baik di belanjakan makanan cemilan dari pada bayar tukang ojeg, jadi aku suka jalan kaki kalau pulang. Bahkan waktu aku sekolah sore jam 18.00 aku baru sampai rumah, aku pernah kebanjiran di jalan dan aku pulang dengan basah kuyup, baju seragam dan buku pada keriting. pengalaman yang selalu aku ingat seumur hidupku.

Beranjak dewasa, tepatnya kuliah aku sering bekerja part time karna kebutuhan kuliah banyak dan aku tidak bisa mengandalkan terus orang tua, apalagi aku punya adik yang masih sekolah, aku tahu orangtuaku banyak sekali beban secara keuangan, dengan gaji pegawai yang tidak banyak dan poperti yang cukup untuk membiayai adikku. Untuk biaya-biaya aku di kampus aku bekerja cukup keras, dokter bilang aku kena penyakit Magg ( lambung) jadi aku punya riwayat itu karna pola makan yang sedikit, kadang di tengah pekerjaanku aku suka lupa makan atau dengan porsi yang sedikit. Akibat dari magg, walaupun aku banyak makan badanku selalu kurus.

Pada kelulusan kuliah aku mencoba jadi penulis website dan mengembangkan website karna aku merasa kelelahan karna harus standbay di lapangan karna pekerjaanku selama kuliah. Selain itu, aku juga ingin mengatur pola makan untuk mengobati Magg dan menggendutkan badan, namun dua tahun wabah korona di mana-mana itu membuatku takut keluar rumah. Tahun 2019, awal 2020 dan pertengahan 2022 aku masih aktif bekerja dan berkegiatan di lapangan. Itu momen sebelum dan sesudah corona.

Catatan Love

Aku memandang cinta sesuatu yang istimewa, dan hubungan akan berjalan harmonis kalau menemukan teman yang memiliki cara pandang yang sama dan banyak kecocokan, aku suka membaca novel tentang cinta dan menurutku itu sesuatu yang indah dan bermakna untuk setiap orang.

Dalam tulisan ini aku ingin bercerita tentang apa yang ingin aku tulis saja dari momen yang pernah aku lewati. Pada tahun 2021 aku bertemu lagi dengan teman kuliahku secara online, ( aku ingin menulis dia saja ) banyak masalah yang sudah aku dan dia lewati, dan itu mempengaruhi dia secara emosional.

aku tidak tahu apa yang dia pikirkan namun aku berusaha memberitahunya untuk berpikir secara positif, agar perasaan mapun emosinya lebih baik. aku tahu tidak mudah melalui masa sedih, namun berulang kali aku merasa sendiri dan kesepian walau aku dekat denganya, aku merasa seperti tidak merasa ada, walaupun menjadi seorang teman, aku merasa dia membenciku, dengan menjauhiku di media sosial, aku tahu itu karna banyak masalah di antara kita.

Ditenggah banyak masalah itu aku merasa sunyi dan murung, dia seperti anak kecil dengan ulahnya, seperti seorang yang emosinya sedang labil, karna untuk paham dengan orang-orang secara sosial pelu banyak memahami mungkin ada alasan yang membuat seseorang berulah. Aku masih ingin tahu apa aku ini masih temannya? apa masih ada waktu untuk mengatasi masalah kalau memang itu sumbernya? atau dia membenciku, Makanya dia selalu berulah?.

Aku merasa sisi introvetku semakin memburuk, aku perlu menghilangkan sunyi dan sendirian terlalu lama karna itu memperburuk sisi introvetku, walau aku sebenarnya bukan 100% introvert, aku secara diagnosa tes karakter aku seorang ambivert. Dan mengenal temanku yang satu ini dengan berbagai banyak masalah dan buruknya komunikasi, memperburuk sisi introvetku.

( Kalau memang dia membenciku, aku bersumpah tidak ingin mengenalnya lagi dan tidak ingin bertemu dengan dia lagi )

Jika dia memang membenciku, sebaiknya aku move on dan melupakanya, karna itu membuat sisi introvetku semakin buruk dan aku merasa murung setiap hari. aku yakin di semesta ini masih ada orang baik yang berarti, orang yang akan membuatku belajar tentang cinta dan melindungi, membuat hari-hari berwarna, ramah dan menyenangkan. Itu saja yang ingin aku tulis dengan jujur dan apa adanya.
