Any sort of plant hopper! Treehoppers, leafhoppers! They're all such diverse and funky little guys! And so are their nymphs! Even plain looking plant hoppers have crazy-looking nymphs!

Now that I have your attention...
Another flat mop of a thing

(I think this one is also in flatidae)
Look at those poofs!
Tumblr media
I believe this one is in the family Ricaniidae
Oh? A piece of popcorn?
Tumblr media
Guess again! Its another flatidae nymph! The internet likes to call this one the popcorn nymph.
And finally, fireworks butts!

Left is Aplos simplex and right is Nogodinidae sp.
Why are planthoppers fuzzy?
The waxy strands are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water. The reason for these is theorized to be that they keep them nice and dry. The colorful strands may also warn predators to stay away. (Source)
A lot of times nymphs are mistaken for harmful aphids and are mistakenly killed :(

Here's an adult. While nymphs truely live up to their namesake, adults aren't able to jump. They are very good at leafing though
Tumblr media
Adults rely on their camouflage rather than speed or dexterity

Yay planthoppers!

Why does this popcorn have teeny tiny legs? Because it is, in fact, a flatid planthopper nymph, a type of Amazonian insect!

The Flatid Planthopper Nymph is an Amazonian insect that look just like popcorn with tiny legs. It is covered in protective waxy filaments that makes it look like a fluff of cloud or a popped kernel.

The so-called "flatid planthopper nymph covered with a protective layer of waxy white filament, like a cottony cushion" is actually a walking popcorn bug
