28th July, 1935. First flight of the Boeing B-17 strategic bomber, later to be named the ‘Flying Fortress’. The type was designed to conduct high altitude operations using the newly developed Norden bombsight, and was intended to protect itself against attack with heavy defensive armament. Combat experience, especially over Europe, would prove that precision bombing was rather more difficult in practice than theory, and fighter escort was indispensable. Over 12,000 B-17s were built.

Initially used operationally by the RAF in limited numbers (see my post of 8th July), the B-17 was first saw service with the USAAF in the Pacific. Famously, a flight of the aircraft arrived over Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on 7th December 1941 and B-17s suffered significant losses during the initial phases of the Pacific war. Further use during the battles of Coral Sea and Midway yielded poor results, though the type had more success during the battle of the Bismarck Sea. Fewer than 200 B-17s served in the Pacific, and had largely been replaced by the longer ranged B-24 in the theatre by mid-1943, though some were later used in the search and rescue role.

It was over occupied Europe that the ‘Flying Fortress’ would make its name. Limited operations from Britain began in August 1942 and initially it seemed that the concept of a self-defending bomber formation was vindicated. However, once larger scale raids into Germany began in 1943, losses from Luftwaffe fighters quickly mounted. Though the B-17 gained a reputation for its ability to absorb combat damage, and German pilots respected its firepower, this was not enough. Following two operations against Schweinfurt which cost over 120 aircraft, deep penetration raids into Germany were temporarily halted.

With the arrival of the P-51 Mustang in early 1944, the B-17, alongside the B-24, was able to operate as far as Berlin, though losses to German defences remained significant for some time. The type was key to the Allied daylight bombing offensive and inflicted massive damage, though extravagant claims of ‘pickle barrel’ precision bombing proved groundless. For a variety of reasons, not least the prevailing weather conditions and cloud cover, USAAF accuracy was often little better than that achieved by the RAF at night.

Quickly phased out of use as a bomber after the war, many B-17s remained in service in a variety of secondary roles. These included air-sea rescue, reconnaissance, mapping, atomic sampling, airborne early warning, drone targets and even CIA special operations. Others were converted for civilian roles, with some B-17 firebombers (a number of which have since found homes in museums) remaining operational into the 1980s. B-17s also served with a variety of air forces and civilian operators around the world including in Brazil, Israel, Portugal and France.

3) The YB-40 ‘gunship’ was an attempt to give B-17 formations extra firepower. Mounting an extra top turret, twin waist guns and a new chin turret, its extra ammunition load left it too heavy to keep up with the aircraft it was supposed to protect, particularly after they had released their bombs. Only 48 operational sorties were flown, with 5 Luftwaffe fighters claimed destroyed.

4) A handful of B-17s were captured intact by the Germans. ‘Wulfe Hound’ of the 303rd Bomb Group force landed in France on 12th December 1942 and was later used by the Luftwaffe’s clandestine operations squadron, KG 200.

July Summary + Takeaways

It's clear that they're a couple during this month. The ramped-up romance/sexual energy of June continues into July, and this is the first month I notice some phone-swapping. It's also when we can see gg giving SO MANY gooey expressions to dd. Poor jc and jl both take a turn as the third wheel between these two.

This is also the first month we get dd yelling out that he loves gg. First with the Zhan-ge dd ai ni on 7.8 and then during XL's interview with the cast on 7.9.

I'm curious about the sequence of events on 7.8, tbh. On that day, we have ggdd thirdwheeling jl, the zhan-ge dd ai ni, and the "you're not banned in cloud recesses" mic drop. But we also get dd being a smart-ass about throwing gg in a lake. Or, more accurately, I guess, throwing wwx in a lake (though he's answering as dd, not as lwj). That's a lot of back and forth for dd.

Combine that with the next day's other love declaration during the xl interview and dd's going fast and furious with fiery emotions. (And an alternate date for the xl interview is on 7.8, so that would be even more notable).

I've seen a post (I don't remember who. If it was you, lmk, and I'll link it) point out that dd might have been making a point in that "keep or throw in the lake" interview that it's not wwx he's into, it's gg. We see him say this more explicitly on 7.18 in the clip that basically converted me into turtledom. I can see that take. While gg often refers to dd as lwj (or lz), dd's pretty consistent about just referring to gg as zhan-ge. I can't recall a time he calls him wwx (or wy). So I think that line is firmer for dd and he's trying to make that clear to gg because he worried it's muddier for him.

Before doing this, I thought dd's little love declarations were joke-y. But if they're already in a relationship, then they hit different. That's something you joke about in a relationship if you've already exchanged "I love yous" with your partner. When reciprocated, it becomes a source of joy and delight that you feel like showering them with non-stop. It's awkward to do so if they haven't reciprocated, so I can only envision these declarations if both ggdd did a love confession before this.

There's nothing incredibly notable in the days leading up to 7.8, but this is likely something that happened in private. This does put something of a kibosh on my speculation that gg turned dd's confession down at first. Or maybe dd first confessed back in June, got turned down, then they both came back around to it at the beginning of July?

Also, if gg and dd really did try to explain omegaverse fic to jc and yb on 7.11, I so desperately would like to see a translation of whatever was bleeped out. It sounds hilarious.

The 7.16 xuanwu cave clips are all just amazing. Watching these in order (with less chopped-up clips), I picked up on the fact that gg tends to greet dd with a small touch on the back whenever he gets to set (dd tends to arrive after gg, I think bc his makeup/hair takes longer). Something about that small gesture makes me smile.

I've also heard that the tongue in cheek blowjob gesture that gg seemed to make towards dd isn't really a thing in China, but I have trouble reading that scene if that's a neutral gesture. Like, dd has his robes hiked up (for some reason). GG pointedly looks down and smirks while looking back up and then does that with his tongue. I just...the only explanation is blowjob. It just is.

So, yeah, maybe gg picked up that particular gesture somewhere. The fact that it's not a thing in China overall might have made him feel more secure doing it so openly in front of the camera.

I also started to pick up on the fact that my comprehensive bilibili playlist was missing scenes. Ah well. I have strong memories of the clip of gg getting injured in the Cold Springs bc it also has dd being rude to gg and then apologizing. Something about seeing a moment of conflict feels especially intimate, honestly. The fact that that's also the day that gg tells the crew to ignore dd yelling out on the roof is...well, maybe a little passive aggressive?

GG also gets noticeably more annoyed with the camera during this month. Previously, he'd get embarrassed if caught swearing or something. But this month is (I think) the first where he starts trying to shoo the camera away or block it.

The 7.23 jealousy in English conversation just kills me. They're in a relationship at this point, so are they talking about past behavior? Does dd still talk to men on WeChat? Was gg talking to a girl? Was she a sister? A girl friend? Or was gg making fun of dd talking to men on WeChat before they got together? (Was gg one of those men?) Why on earth did they have this convo in English??

Wow, that's a lot. It's this month more than ever (thus far) that really hits home how little we see. There's so much happening outside the view of even the bts camera, and we only get little glimpses of their relationship. It's compelling and interesting and sweet all at the same time.

So. This song. It's a post canon song if I ever heard one. It reflects how Ryou finally has friends and doesn't have to be alone anymore, it reflects how Yu-Gi-Oh is a cyclical story where the friendship gang finally finished what was started in Ancient Egypt several thousand years ago.

Also this song was used as the credits song for the DnD movie and I think that's highly thematic for Ryou.

Yami Bakura:

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing could very easily be a TKB song with its lyrics about grudges and revenge, but I think there's an unhingedness that matches Yami Bakura better. YB is partially TKB, yes, but he's also partially Zorc and there's no real separating the two anymore.

Also Yami Bakura is quite literally a wolf in sheep's clothing if you take Ryou as the 'sheep' he's wearing.
