You CANNOT tell me that the conversation Sengo had with Kar'niss about wanting to pursue a relationship with Halsin went well. NOTHING you'll tell me will convince me that it went smoothly, NOTHING. Because like we've already established before, Kar'niss has mashed potatoes for brains and his emotional regulation skills are worse than a toddler's. I wouldn't call him possessive but he grew to accept Sengo as the one, single reliable constant in his otherwise extremely chaotic life. If EVERYTHING ELSE went wrong Kar'niss could ALWAYS rely on Sengo to be there for him, with him, through EVERY step of the way, good and bad, thick and thin. Sengo is like a beacon of clarity and reassurance in a turbulent sea of confusion and blackness for Kar'niss. So Kar'niss suddenly learning – and UNDERSTANDING – that there is another man Sengo likes who might take Sengo away from him? Even if Sengo reassures Kar'niss that it's only an infatuation that he wants to carefully explore and that he'd never ever think of leaving Kar'niss behind for anyone, there IS a chance, no matter how slim, that Sengo WILL be whisked away from him by this other man Sengo now likes in the same way he likes Kar'niss. And Kar'niss CAN'T have that. He goes BATSHIT.

Because for Kar'niss, losing Sengo would mean more than just losing his best and only friend, his partner, his mate, or even his prey if Kar'niss is in A Mood. For Kar'niss, losing Sengo would mean losing that beacon of clarity and reassurance Kar'niss sees in him and being left alone in the dark. It would mean suddenly being in a freefall into everything Kar'niss can no longer understand or make sense of after he lost his mind. It would mean remaining alone in a hostile world where the only thing he knows how to do WELL is kill. And that's scary. Terrifying, actually, and the first time Kar'niss hears about Halsin he PANICS, and his panic turns into unbridled rage. He's not mad at Sengo, most of his rage is directed at Halsin for daring to threaten his sense of security by making Sengo want to leave him, but then his unstable little brain starts working overtime and suddenly he feels.... like he might be inadequate? That Sengo might want to leave him because he's simply not good enough for him? Is it the fact they can't properly mate like a real couple? Is it the fact that Kar'niss is inattentive and forgetful on the best of days and that it takes a lot of effort just to relay a simple sentence to him? Is Sengo tired of how damaged he is? Does Sengo want someone who isn't completely and utterly broken? And that's when the tears come, and Kar'niss promises he'll do better, he'll BE better, he's sorry he's like this, he'll learn how to be normal just please, please don't leave me. He begs and pleads and it absolutely TEARS Sengo's heart APART and now his main objective is to calm Kar'niss the fuck down before this already dreadful conversation can progress anywhere else.

Once Kar'niss is relatively calm again Sengo decides to put this particular topic on the back burner and let Kar'niss recover. In the meantime he goes and relays EVERYTHING that went down to Halsin and the two of them are kinda at a loss because they don't want to proceed behind Kar'niss' back but also there is virtually no way for them to help Kar'niss think about this shit rationally. So, they go to Mikhail, who literally specializes in treating insane people as the Faerûn version of a licensed psychotherapist (who is also permitted to medicate).

Mikhail is a bit busy with the whole uh illithid-parasite-shadow-curse-Ketheric-Thorm-Moonrise situation but he makes time to handle this bullshit, mostly because he was lowkey treating Kar'niss anyway and helping deprogram the Absolute from his brain (also I know the Halsin romance happens LATER in the game but in Sengo's canon it happened earlier because it just happened earlier, I don't make the rules). Mikhail has several LONG talks with both Halsin and Sengo about the subject where they discuss all the sticky feelings involved but also Kar'niss' condition, and what would be the best way to approach Kar'niss about this issue to make sure he feels like he has the right AND ability to refuse if he feels uncomfortable WITHOUT flying off the handle and getting angry. Mikhail also noted that they should try telling Kar'niss that Halsin is an ADDITION to Sengo's love life and not a replacement for Kar'niss. That Halsin and Kar'niss CAN learn to co-exist and work together. That Halsin isn't a THREAT, not to Kar'niss' relationship with Sengo and not to Kar'niss' sense of security in the world. And now, armed with all of Mikhail's therapy talk, Sengo and Halsin go on to try talking to Kar'niss AGAIN.

NGL, Kar'niss nearly beheads Halsin when he sees him but Sengo manages to calm him down enough to at least let Halsin talk and explain himself. The second talk goes.... better than the first one. They say everything that Mikhail told them to say and they speak slowly and carefully using simple wording. Sengo had to admit it was the first time in a while he saw Kar'niss so FOCUSED and ALERT, but it worked in their favor because Kar'niss understood what they ACTUALLY meant this time. It takes Kar'niss a few moments to spit out a proper reply but he basically says that he would like to think about it. That's already so much more progress than him breaking down completely at the mere mention of Halsin.

Hey, Penacony spoilers ahead for up to the end of 2.3. THEORY AHEAD. (kinda crack, kinda not, I'm talking about Gallagher)

Y'know, it's funny how Gallagher, a History Fictionologist, told like 1 lie.

And then, Mr. Reca, a Memokeeper, told some guy "Love the unknown" once.

Like, guys, switch places, please. That would make more sense.

I remember when I found inconsistencies with how people treated Gallagher; one of two Bloodhounds "recognising" him, another Bloodhound going "Who?" and then the receptionist at the Family's mansion acting as if he's some important person who's rarely sought out by people?

I swear, this still makes no sense... unless......

And Reca is sometimes a well-known director. Sometimes a self-proclaimed one.

Chabro and Aideen? Love the guy. Nobodies? Who does this dude think he is.

But hey. You know what makes me go "What the HELL is going on here"?

I have two questions.

Why "Mr. Reca"? And not Mr. Reca?

How the hell does this guy know about Gallagher AND HIS DEATH.

Okay, so I guess this Reca is indeed a Memokeeper who uses camera and film to record (rec - Reca) stuff and retell stories. He should be the same Memokeeper Black Swan mentions at the Studios.

And I suspect this censored movie to be his work.

Hey, remember who did so much to make sure that some people's names and true stories would be restored?

Yeah, funny coincidences.

And then, nobody remembers Gallagher, ironically. Except us, Nameless.

And except Reca, SOMEHOW. (Aideen. Gallagher is the guy thanked BEFORE YOUR OWN BRAND, DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE MOVIE.)

But ultimately, Aideen is right. Gallagher wasn't made to be remembered.

Sorry, I mean, "Gallagher the History Fictionologist" isn't meant to be remembered.

We know "Gallagher" is fake. And I'm not just talking about his appearance; ALL OF HIM is fictional. He is a character, a role. And like any role... there has to be an actor playing the part. The person who came up with "Gallagher". The person who is still there once the character isn't needed anymore.

The person we didn't see when "Gallagher" disappeared off-screen.

And I guess that person would also be the real Gallagher... The one who was so loyal to Mikhail.

Or... was he all that loyal to Mikhail?

There's something so fickle about calling an unshakable loyalty "imaginary". I know it's meant positively here, but it's so easy to turn this upside-down...

I mean, the purpose of "Gallagher" was to fulfill one promise to Mikhail. And once that has been done... the real Gallagher could do whatever, afterwards. He's free of his role as "Gallagher" the History Fictionologist... who did the exact opposite of what a Fictionologist would do...... by restoring the truth of the past.........

Gallagher is the worst at his job, isn't he. Almost like he should be a Memokeeper, instead.

Anyway. I have a technical question.

Where did Reca get the memory segments to recreate Firefly for the Scorchsand Venue movie?

I see two possibilities:

Got them from someone else (Aideen, other witnesses, maybe from the surroundings themselves?)

Himself

In the first case, it makes sense, I have no further question.

In the second case, though... When did Reca meet Firefly? Did he need to actually meet her or would just seeing her from afar suffice? Depending on the answers to those questions, things might get complicated.

Okay, it's time I stopped beating around the bush. I've been drawing mirrored parallels between "Gallagher" and "Mr. Reca" from the very start of this post. You're probably guessing what my point is by now.

But first... Remember Sleepie? a.k.a. Dormancy?

Poor thing came to Scorchsand searching for Gallagher...

But there was no trace of him there anymore since... before Sleepie arrived... Right?

And there's no way Gallagher would still be around... Right?

... why would you say that if you know your whole being will disappear once you're done with your final task...

i mean, it's not like there was yet another Hound statue in Dreamflux Reef, next to the three epitaphs of the Nameless, right?! Grmbl...

Remember when Himeko said "In the end, we still failed to figure out his true identity, or if he was even a "living person"? Because I SURE REMEMBER.

Anyway, we don't know where Reca was when Sleepie arrived at Scorchsand, but-

I think it's safe to say that they interracted to some extent.

BUT that's in fact still not what made me go "WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL IS GOING ON HERE???!!"

Remember how the movie started?

With the phrase: "Even now, the world is still filled with characters that we've played."

The hell do you mean by that, Reca.

And it ended with the phrase: "We will keep playing our roles, drunken and foolish in the moment, playing at life but never thinking to celebrate it." Then the credits roll.

Heyyyy, I know someone else who talks about celebrating life. And used bits of other people's lives to create a whole new "character". Kinda like how you can pick pieces of different stories to make a whole new story. Or movie, for that matter.

And hey... Reca told us "My lens is upon you… Don't let me down. And more importantly, don't let the audience down."

You know who told us we had interesting life stories? YEAH.

If the real Gallagher's full name was Gallagher Reca.

Or maybe "Mr. Reca" is just yet another pseudonym. I mean, why would he credit himself as "Mr. Reca" and not Reca. That's fishy.

ANYWAY, this theory has been on my mind for maybe 4 months now, so I'm glad I've finally manage to write all of my thoughts down.

So I finally had time to sit down and play through 2.3 this week and man I have a lot of Feelings about all of it, but today it's about Gallagher and Mikhail because!

The devotion of a dog! Gallagher's dedication lasting beyond Mikhail's death and then some! The way he let himself be seen through knowing it would mean his own death because it would help to accomplish his and Mikhail's dream! The immense regret and long lasting guilt of not helping Mikhail when he needed him! THE WAY MISHA CALLS GALLAGHER "MY HOUND-"

Ahem. I'm normal I swear. Anyway.

And one of my favorite displays of this undying loyalty? This.

This is the record you unlock in 2.3 after Siobahn brings up Gallagher's death in the Dreamjolt Hostelry. Right after "to the Nameless resting in peace... and to Gallagher."

La Messe de l'athée translates to The Mass of the Atheist. It was a short story about a man who goes to church, and is surprised to see another man whom he knows is an atheist attending mass, all alone. When questioned, the atheist says that he attends for a friend. This friend had banded with him when they were both poor, and acted as a father figure to him. The atheist managed to pull himself from poverty with his help, and did everything he could to repay and take care of his friend thereafter.

The friend died of illness some years later.

The atheist is still an atheist. But he attends mass on the behalf of the religious friend that saved him, and recites the prayers he heard whispered on his deathbed. These borrowed prayers are the closest a man like him could get to being a true believer, but he always holds out hope that those beliefs might enter his head.

There is so much in there, in the story they decided on as our final memento of Gallagher, that this is what was chosen to immortalize him, and ARGH OTL
