Mantras hold the power behind the effectiveness of an idol in a temple because without a perfected mantra, neither the yantra nor the idol can exert its influence. Mantras make your speech, body, and thoughts potent. A slight mistake in pronunciation can undo all the efforts made.

It is important that no one knows which mantra a practitioner is chanting. If someone is nearby, mental chanting should be done instead of aloud.

Lord Rama, while imparting knowledge of devotion to Mata Shabari, said, “Mantra japa with firm faith is my fifth type of devotion, as revealed by the Vedas.” This means that mantra chanting is one of the five forms of devotion and is a powerful way to achieve desired results when done with the appropriate mala (rosary).

If you do not achieve success even after chanting a mantra, it may be because you are not using the correct mala corresponding to your desire. Hence, the choice of mala holds great significance in mantra japa.

Preparation Before Mantra Chanting

Once the mala is purified, light a lamp, face east or north, and recite the following mantra while meditating on your deity:

“Deepo Jyotih Param Brahma, Deepo Jyotir Janardana. Deepo Haratu Me Paapam, Pooja Deep Namostute. Shubham Karotu Kalyanam Aarogyam Sukha Sampadam. Shatru Buddhi Vinashay, Pooja Deep Namostute.”

After worshipping your deity, hold the Sumeru bead (the starting bead of the mala) between your eyes at the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) and chant the following mantra to empower the mala:

“Om Maa Male Mahamaye Sarvashakti Swaroopini. Chaturvarga Tvayi Nyastastasmaanme Siddhida Bhava. Om Avighnam Kuru Male Tvam Grihnami Dakshine Kare. Japakale Cha Siddhyartham Praseeda Mama Siddhaye. Om Akshamaladhipataye Susiddhim Dehi Dehi Sarvamantrarath Sadhini Sadhya-Sadhya Sarvasiddhi Parikalpaya Parikalpaya Me Swaha.”

When the japa is complete, again place the mala at the Brahmarandhra and recite the mantra:

“Om Guhyati Guhya Goptri Tvam Grihanasmatkritam Japam. Siddhirbhavatu Me Dev Tvat Prasadan Maheshwari.”

This will help fulfill all your wishes.

Important Note: Use the ring finger and thumb to hold the beads and move forward using the middle finger. Avoid using any other fingers during the japa.
