“Porcelain Skin” By Jessica Drenk

“What is that?” was the first question that came to mind when my eyes met this fragile sculpture. I was almost sure that the object before me was a piece of coral and I questioned its place in the gallery.

To my amazement, this was made by a woman, Jessica Drenk.  

This delicate piece is a symbol, political statement, humbling metaphor and devastating reality all in one small, porcelain shape.

           Formerly beautiful waters can now be identified as wastelands, providing home for our neglect and indifference rather than life. We look at this object and it reminds us of coral, one of nature’s depleting natural beauties. Just like this piece, coral, now commonly white instead of red, is porous, intricate and very delicate. Though it is unclear upon first glance, the fraudulent coral was created with Q-tips, string and porcelain. This knowledge came to me as a shock, I felt deceived and had to take a closer look.

I discovered how, ironically, the polluted “coral” was made with a pollutant. Q-tips are one example of the debris that manifests itself into natural environments and doesn’t decompose. I discovered more symbolic meaning to the piece as I continued to look at it.

I believe Jessica Drenk intended the audience to react in the way that I did. My reaction to the “coral” symbolized the deceit in politics concerning the health of our planet. The artificial truths that are given to the public can reveal themselves to be untrue upon further examination which is the metaphor displayed in this piece of porcelain. In crafting this pungent remark to our treatment and attempt at healing the environment, Jessica Drenk displays the fragility and value of natural beauty with a delicate porcelain enigma.

I was invited along with a few other comedians to a Psychology of Comedy course at Pomona College. We did our bits and then professor Ori wanted to dissect them: why they’re funny, why we choose these jokes, etc. Nerdy comedy discussion ensued, like why are taints funnier than balls, but balls is funnier to say? This is Erica Flapan. She taught me and the homies Calc freshman year. As I told her she was THE HARDEST teacher I ever had for anything. But the ease with which she explained math concepts suddenly made me have a breakthrough. Even though her tests seemed impossible and I got a C- in her class, my skills were so good that I got a B in Calc 2. People always say "I'm bad at math." And I was one of those people. But a lot of people are NOT bad at math. They just need the right trainer. She was that for me and my friends. I'm indebted to her for my ability to not teach/tutor math and the skills I can instill in others.
