Interweave Crochet, Summer 2021
The 14 projects here cover a wide range. The cover features two novelty items: the Floating on Waves Tank by Natalie Thomas (see the top right corner which reveals its back look) to the Ananas (French for pineapple) Drawstring bag by Deborah Bagley.
There are also two pretty wraps as well as two cowls. My favorite here is a clever filet crochet design by Adinda Hening called Alinea Wrap which is an easy pattern and shown here in Schweepes Whirl, a long yardage, cotton blend which shifts color as it goes. It is only a 1 out of 4 for difficulty and makes me think I have underestimated the geometric playfulness of filet crochet.
Several more sweaters appear including the purple Pomelo Cardigan by Natasha Robarge in Hikoo Concentric Cotton which is a worked from the bottom up. This is a more difficult pattern at 3 out of 4.
Kirsten Joel designed the Fluid Lines Coverup which is open in the back save for 5 buttons at the top. I can see figuring out a way to add a flare to it and shutting it down the back to avoid that I-am-wearing-a-hospital-gown feeling. It is made from Fibra Natura Flax Lace linen yarn and is a 3 out of 4 for difficulty.
Kathryn A. White wrote the technical article on shaping filet crochet, and Jennifer Mogoyne wrote on three great crochet designers, some of whose work has appeared recently in the magazine’s pages: Dora Ohrenstein, Lily M. Chin, and Doris Chan.
Find it at your local yarn store, bookstore, or online here: https://www.interweave.com/crochet/

ZACK THE CLOWN
Hello Zack. It is your turn to be talked about. This is not his name of course, but now that I’m thinking about it, I think I only know a few ‘Zacks.’
So we only talked for maybe two days. I remember he asked me for my Snap. Then, I remember I was shopping at Michael’s. It was a Sunday that day. I don’t remember what I needed from Michael’s, but I walked out with this cute Easter bunny headband and a grapefruit pomelo candle. I was walking to my car when I got a message from him basically asking what I was doing. So, I figured he wanted to do something that day since all the questions that followed was dumb.
Well, I got home and I asked my mom if it was alright that I go out that day. There wasn’t anything for me to do at home. “Who are you going out with? Junior?” she asked. I told her it was this guy that I was talking to. Of course, I had told her about how things with Omar ended maybe two days prior to this date with Zack, so she was suspicious. She asked me how I met him and what he looked like. If you’ve never been asked questions about a romantic interest by your parents, well then I suppose you can’t relate to this moment.
At some point, she asked me to show her a picture of him. Well, how was I going to make that happen? It’s so unfortunate that Zack had absolutely no pictures with his face visible on his Tinder profile. So, I asked him to send me a nice picture of himself, otherwise, my mom wouldn’t let me leave the house. This clown sent me a goofy picture of him carrying a bible as if that was going to get any brownie points from my mother. She looked at his picture, made a ‘This guy?’ face at me, and told me to come back home by 9.
Anyways, I got dressed up in a pair of jeans, a black V-neck, a red cardigan, and sandals. Now, I would have never chosen to wear sandals for a date, but that day I didn’t feel like wearing my Converse. They were cute anyhow, so I went out just like that.
I drove about 20 minutes away from my house to his. Well, I didn’t expect us to take his car when I got there, but he said he didn’t want me to drive. Seemingly old-fashioned right? Well, this clown opened the door from INSIDE his car as opposed to opening the door from outside and then hopping in after. Why am I making a big stink about that? This guy says he’s old-fashioned as in ‘man’s job is taking care of the woman.’ Well, he did the bare minimum on that date, so he might as well have let me drive. I feel more comfortable being the driver anyways.
Our decision on what to do resulted in going to Baskin Robbins. We pulled into the tiny parking lot and got out. That’s when we noticed a man running around the lot with his pants down. The area that he lived in isn’t known for being the safest place and that’s all that I’m going to say about that. Tell me why this clown decided to stop and say, “Hey, wait. I want to get a video of this,” though. This guy really was goofy. I walked into the store on my own and he shortly followed. I got a cup of rainbow sherbet and he got a mixture of vanilla and mango. I wanted to pay, but he paid for both of us.
We walked back to his car and started eating the ice cream. He played music in his car and there were two artists we bonded over: Omar Apollo and Boy Pablo. I had only recently learned about Omar Apollo from my first date. That's how I named him, Omar the First, after Omar Apollo. Boy Pablo is an artist I’ve been listening to since high school. I didn’t know a lot of people that knew him, so I was surprised as we listened to Boy Pablo in the car. Afterward, he drove us over to a parking lot. All we did was talk about anime, our dads, and whatever other information we exchanged.
It was getting close to 9 and I told him we should head back to my car. On the way back, we talked about our romantic experiences or rather our lack of. I had only been on two dates before Zack and he was surprised. His reasoning for his surprise was what really irked me. I’m sure he meant it as a compliment, but he said, “What?! But people love Asians!” Really did not do it for me, that comment. What he told me was that I was his first Tinder date. I can’t remember if he said I was his first date ever, but since I can’t remember, that portion isn’t relevant.
We finally get back to his place and I’m not even sure how to conclude this date. Do we kiss? I didn't know. Well, he didn’t know either, because he gave me a high-five. That’s right. A high-five. I was like, ‘Alright, a high-five.’ Well, no matter.
He walked me back to my car and saw me drive off. I can’t remember who texted first if it was me or him while I was driving back home. Anyways, we talked about going on another date. As soon as the day after our date.
I got home well before 9 and my mother was surprised that I was home early. She asked me about the date, I gave her the details, and she told me she liked this boy a lot better than Omar. I told her that he seemed more promising and put together. Later that night, Zack and I talked a bit more until we both said our 'goodnight's.' I had school the next morning and I needed the energy to power through my linguistics course.
The next day comes, we’re talking about what we want to do that day. At first, he seemed into the idea of going out. Then, it felt like he became less interested as the hours went by. I remember telling him, “If you want, we can go out another time.” He kept telling me that he was interested but his free day turned into an ‘I’m helping my cousin with his car' day. He told me that he would keep me updated about whether we could still go out that day. Well, what did I do? I waited. The hours passed by and I waited. Not a peep from him for hours. Then, it was 9 o’clock and I was doing my stats homework earlier than it was due instead of going out that night.
I was sad. I got stood up. There were times in high school when this had happened to me and I felt silly all over again waiting for this guy. I remember my mom asking me if I was still going to go out that night. I told her that I had homework to do and he was busy with his cousin. I cried over my stats homework. The tears just fell out of my eyes and onto the paper.
Oftentimes in situations like these, I become upset with myself. I’ve been deceived in the past before. When things like this would happen, I would think that if I played my moves smart, I could avoid getting played. There are some things that you can't avoid no matter how smart you try to play it. I felt dumb and silly for having blind optimism for Zack. I think many people would think I’m gloomy, moody, whatever else you want to call it. Few people recognize that I try to be optimistic about my experiences and the times I try to be hopeful, I get cheated. Do you think I want to think the worst of people all of the time? I don’t.
As I was saying, he didn’t get back to me at all to apologize or anything until the next day. We continued to talk after. He would message me first every day. I remember we had a talk because I needed it to be known. I gave him the run-down about how I’m looking for something serious and if he wasn’t rolling with it then he should spend his time somewhere else. Sounds intense of me? Maybe to some, but I don’t like wasting my time and others’. I don’t like being haunted by ghosts. So I told him I was interested in getting to know him better and if he wasn’t interested in something serious that it was okay.
What he explained to me was that he was not ready for a relationship. He had never been in one before and he wanted to do it right. That’s what he was telling me essentially. I took that into consideration. I told him that I was still interested in getting to know him nonetheless and that it was his call if he wanted to keep talking or not. Well, how confusing is it? He didn’t want anything serious but texted me first every single day after our talk.
Anyways, days pass after our date. He didn’t make another attempt to ask to hang out, so on a lovely Friday, I got brave and asked him if he wanted to go out that day. He was busy.
Well, for a month, he just kept messaging me every day. He didn’t miss a day that month. While this was going on, his friends had followed me on Instagram, both of them trying to shoot their shots with me. It was very odd and I didn’t know what to do with this behavior other than to block their compliments.
Somewhere along the way, one of his friends had added me to their group chat and removed me. By doing this, I was able to view everything they talked about in their chat. There was Zack and his four friends. What I found in that chat honestly angered me. I felt SO dumb, thinking that him going out of his way to talk to me every day for a month meant that he was interested in me.
Do you remember that day that he stood me up? That day he wanted to go out, but got stuck doing stuff with his cousin? Well, I can tell you that he wasn’t with his cousin. I guess to his friends he had changed when he got Tinder. He was talking to a bunch of girls at one time, as well as me. I’m not sure what else happened between his friends and him. All that I know was that I got a check-up from one of his friends that tried hitting on me. He was the one that added me to the group chat and although I was hurt by some of the things said about me, I was thankful that he did what he did. He asked me if I was okay, I pretended I was.
Zack fell off the Earth. We stopped talking. That experience was so terrible. I felt so dejected. That experience was so disheartening. I started thinking that maybe I deserved it for being so naive, for telling him that I would wait for him until he made a decision.
We didn’t talk for a very long time. At this time, I started talking to other people on Tinder, but the whole experience with Zack put me in a poor place. Quarantine was put in effect as well. Mentally, I was just not in a good place, and being stuck at home didn't help.
One day though after maybe a month and a half or so, he messaged me. I guess he was in a weird place too. I remember him asking me if I was okay if he hurt me. It was really weird talking to him knowing what I knew, but I never acknowledged with him that I knew about what he said. I didn’t know how to bring it up, so I’m not sure that he knows to this day. He seemed sincere and upset at the thought of him hurting me. So, I accepted his apologies for the sake of internal peace for both of us. I had no energy to be angry at him for what he did.
The crazy part of this was that he messaged me around the time when I was making the realization that I could be a lesbian. I wasn’t completely sure at the time, it was very confusing. Anyways, he actually asked me if I wanted to hook up. At first, I was open to the idea, but the thought of sex with him became something I no longer wanted. I remember when we first talked about hooking up he said, “My insecurities were always holding me back, our first date was great. If there’s anyone who I’d practice with, it’s gotta be you.” We were both virgins and honestly, while I was flattered, I didn’t want to have sex with him. I didn’t want him to be my first.
After all that craziness, he, his friends, and I become friends. I decided I liked him better as a friend than as a romantic interest. As for him and his ‘experience’? He had sex maybe a short while after we talked about hooking up. I remember he messaged me about it while they were STILL in the same bed. I thought that was very funny of him to do. Zack truly was a clown.
Those first few months of knowing him really put me in a strange place. I’m surprised I was able to recall some of these moments because when I look back on this, it feels like such a long time ago. Enough of Zack, let’s move on to the next story, shall we?

Opt for the half-sweater
For Sonia Rykiel’s “Rykiel Forever” capsule collection, the French brand introduced chic “half-sweaters” that look like a traditional sweater but function more like a scarf. Tie the half-sweater around your shoulders for a French-girl look when you’re feeling a little cold. Add in a top handle bag and gold accessories, and you’ll be set for the day.

FOR HIM: Missoni Parfum Pour Homme
FRAGRANCE FAMILY: FOUGRE
Top notes: green lemon leaves & pulp, pink pomelo, lavender Heart notes: Mediterranean herbs, ginger, pomarose, jasmine Base notes: patchouli, sandalwood, oakwood, birch, musk
This is the first male fragrance from Missoni for some decades – and oh, boy, it was worth the wait! Head-clearing green notes of lemon leaves and pomelo dress up the classic fougère note of lavender, with jasmine-garlanded herbs in the heart whisking us to the Mediterranean – and that sense of the mist that lingers just before the golden warmth of a perfect autumnal day. Our favourite stage of the fragrance’s development is hard to choose – but few will be able to resist the almost snuggly finale.
As cosy as wearing our partner’s favourite sweater, this is infinitely ‘shareable’. (And indeed, knitwear – so linked with Missoni’s signature – features strongly as an inspiration; the dry-down – which gives us smooth sandalwood melting into the musky woodieness of the base – was composed to be ‘as enveloping as a precious Missoni cardigan.’
All in all, beautifully woven together – though we’d expect nothing less, from these Italian knitwear maestros.
Missoni Parfum Pour Homme £45 for 50ml eau de parfum
