It's the second night after you first took care of your knife wound patient. You learned from Tess that his name was Joel. It fit him, you think. Joel. He woke up briefly that first day and you were able to feed him some broth before he slipped back asleep. He had a slight fever. You had cleaned the wound well, but who knows how dirty whatever he got stabbed with was, and who knows how long it was before they brought him to you.

When Tess came to visit he woke up and you listened to their conversation from out in the hallway. There was talk of "business" and your ears perked up when you heard mention of the "fireflies."

You heard a rustling and you peeked around the doorframe to watch as Tess pulled a little white pill from a baggie and passed it to Joel. 

Pain meds? How did these people have pain meds but not your hospital. You rolled your eyes. Smugglers. Life was so unfair. 

But at least your patient wouldn't be in too much pain now. You silently thanked this Tess person then quickly moved out of the way as she left the room. 

It was nighttime now and you're finishing up your rounds. Joel is your last patient. There are no lights on in the hallway to conserve energy. A splash of moonlight from a broken-out window illuminates your way. It's silent and you can hear your footsteps pitter patter as you stroll through the empty corridor. 

You peak into his room. He's fast asleep. Hmm maybe those pills she gave him were sleeping pills. He looks totally out. You decide to test it so you take a step into his room and give a light knock on the open door. Nothing. You creep closer. You can hear his breathing, slow and even. You lean in over his face. His incredibly beautiful face. You place a light kiss to his lips. Yes he's totally out of it. He won't notice a thing. You swallow at the anticipation and wet your lips as you move down his body, bringing his blanket down with you.

It's dark in the room, dark enough that if anyone is passing by in the hallway they won't see anything. But that doesn't matter, no one is here. No, it's just the two of you. Just you and Joel, who so incredibly close. You inhale deeply and smile.

there’s this Lizzy McAlpine song that I kept replaying over and over after I finished watching Station Eleven (which is also SO GOOD if you like the whole post-apocalyptic survival thing) because it reminded me of the bond between Kirsten and Jeevan.

IMAX Early Screening of Civil War directed by Alex Garland and starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson and distributed by A24.

I just saw Ex Machina for the first time last month in IMAX at the same theater which included a teaser for Civil War. Turns out it was the opening scene to this movie, which makes sense and it establishes a bleak, dystopian near future where America is going through a civil war with several states attempting to succeed and overthrow the US government. While little information regarding the actual war is provided in the movie it sets a backdrop for an intense and jarring film about bipartisan journalism. Watching these journalists travel 800+ miles for the story of a lifetime while dealing with their disjointed and disconnected view of society. We see a war hardened journalist played by a spectacular Kirsten Dunst whose detached and distant from everything going on around her which cracks and fades through out the film and we see a newcomer played by Cailee Spaeny whose own journey mirrors Dunst’s. The heart and soul of McKinley Henderson’s Sammy and the enthusiasm of Wagner’s Joel are shining spots in the movie. Although Alex Garland isn’t American he captures some distinctly American tropes, men who have just been waiting for some chaos so they can live out their power trip fantasies and those who would rather just “stay out of it” or “pretend it doesn’t exist”. The actual politics are vague and tip toed around without making any actual stands but the story remains intense and jarring regardless. The use of cameras, photography and sound/music to create the most tense moments is masterclass. Rob Hardy deserves a nod for cinematography.
