Film of the week!!

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

This film is one of my favourites of all time. My first introduction to it was in 2022 when I met one of my closest and bestest friends, we met online and we decided to a film exchange, mine was Her (2013) and her's was Eternal Sunshine (2004). Every time I watch this movie, I always leave it with that feeling in my stomach, like a pit. That r I can feel how sad my face looks when when Joel is trying to resist the procedure after realising that even though it was a painful relationship, so much good came from it. It made him who he was and how they grew together as people. Michael Gondry is a genius and I'm sorry Jim Carrey because you didn't like filming it, but it is one of my all-time favourites. I can watch it over and over again and feel everything I did the first time i watched it. Incredible watch 10/10 everytime.

Someone came looking for your patient this morning. She said her name was Tess. She was pretty, in a wild rugged way. You think of her briefly as you quietly walk down the hall. Is she his girlfriend? Partner? You shrug it off. After all, it doesn’t matter, no one will ever know. 

It's the second night after you first took care of your knife wound patient. You learned from Tess that his name was Joel. It fit him, you think. Joel. He woke up briefly that first day and you were able to feed him some broth before he slipped back asleep. He had a slight fever. You had cleaned the wound well, but who knows how dirty whatever he got stabbed with was, and who knows how long it was before they brought him to you.

When Tess came to visit he woke up and you listened to their conversation from out in the hallway. There was talk of "business" and your ears perked up when you heard mention of the "fireflies."

You heard a rustling and you peeked around the doorframe to watch as Tess pulled a little white pill from a baggie and passed it to Joel. 

Pain meds? How did these people have pain meds but not your hospital. You rolled your eyes. Smugglers. Life was so unfair. 

But at least your patient wouldn't be in too much pain now. You silently thanked this Tess person then quickly moved out of the way as she left the room. 

It was nighttime now and you're finishing up your rounds. Joel is your last patient. There are no lights on in the hallway to conserve energy. A splash of moonlight from a broken-out window illuminates your way. It's silent and you can hear your footsteps pitter patter as you stroll through the empty corridor. 

You peak into his room. He's fast asleep. Hmm maybe those pills she gave him were sleeping pills. He looks totally out. You decide to test it so you take a step into his room and give a light knock on the open door. Nothing. You creep closer. You can hear his breathing, slow and even. You lean in over his face. His incredibly beautiful face. You place a light kiss to his lips. Yes he's totally out of it. He won't notice a thing. You swallow at the anticipation and wet your lips as you move down his body, bringing his blanket down with you.

It's dark in the room, dark enough that if anyone is passing by in the hallway they won't see anything. But that doesn't matter, no one is here. No, it's just the two of you. Just you and Joel, who so incredibly close. You inhale deeply and smile.

He's laid out on his back, hands resting on his firm chest. You watch them move up and down with his deep breathing. He would've woken up by now if he wasn't totally out, those must have been sleeping pills. Yes, he's fast asleep, he'll never know.

You reach out and unbuckle his belt quietly, then slowly bring his zipper down. You slide into his boxers and ease his cock free. Damn it, it's too dark to see it properly. It's probably gorgeous. You feel it instead, using your fingers to shape it and create an image in your mind. You give a little involuntary moan as you start to feel him come to life under your hand. there’s this Lizzy McAlpine song that I kept replaying over and over after I finished watching Station Eleven (which is also SO GOOD if you like the whole post-apocalyptic survival thing) because it reminded me of the bond between Kirsten and Jeevan.

This whole scene feels like war to me. Their bond is already so deep and instinctual that they can communicate with just looks from idk how many feet away. It’s how Joel knows Ellie’s next move is the car window. It’s how Ellie looks at him to tell him she’s going after Henry and Sam. It’s how Joel nods at her, letting her know he’s got her back.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a gut-wrenchingly raw depiction of what it means to love someone

the film revolves around Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) who discovers that his former lover, Clementine Kruzcynski (Kate Winslet) has completely erased him from her memory. upon learning this, Joel consults the company responsible for this erasure, Lacuna inc, to do the same for his memories of Clementine

the narrative core takes place within Joel's memories, whilst he relives them as they are being erased. as a result, the relationship between Joel and Clementine is revealed in reverse, which makes the gradual descent into turmoil even more intense. in midst of the erasure process, however, Joel comes to the realisation that he would rather the memories of clementine be unpleasant in the context of their relationship, rather than for them to not exist at all

letting go is one of the most difficult things a person can do. we hold on to things we value as if they will cease to exist when we let go, and in that way we grieve for what is not truly dead

the film ultimately arrives to the conclusion that having a spotless mind does not bring eternal sunshine, as you may forget a past memory but you cannot forget the intrinsically linked emotions. this is explored in the subplot following Mary Svevo (Kirsten Dunst) who discovers that she had her past love affair with Dr Howard Mierzwaik (Tom Wilkinson) erased, and she arrives to that discovery through the rebirth of her love to him

the core message is that pain is what fundamentally shapes us into who we are. we can wish it away and repress it, but the thoughts and memories will always remain, no matter how hard we try

the film opens with a scene that takes places following the memory erasure. on valentines day, Joel feels the inexplicable urge to go to Montauk instead of work, and there he meets Clementine, as she too had experienced that impulse. on that cold day at the beach, they fall for each other all over again

after Joel and Clementine learn they had their memories erased when things didn’t work out, they somehow decide to try again - they know what is waiting at the end of that road and yet they choose to go through it anyway. their journey had been erased after all, and they therefore have an opportunity to re-experience it. perhaps that’s the only way they can understand the nature of their previous destination, or maybe, they share a mutual hope that there could be a different outcome

CLEMENTINE: I'm not a concept, Joel. I'm just a fucked-up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. I'm not perfect. JOEL: I can't think of anything I don't like about you right now.
