In film and video production, split-screen is the visible division of the screen, traditionally in half, but also in several simultaneous images, rupturing the illusion that the screen's frame is a seamless view of reality, similar to that of the human eye.

The technique was often used in concerts movies and also as an experiment for filmmaker Abel Gance, who used the term "Polyvision" to describe his three-camera, three-projector technique for both widening and dividing the screen in his 1927 silent epic, Napoléon John Frankenheimer made Grand Prix and Brian De Palma.

Split-screen can help manipulate time but also works to show several events in real-time, as the film Timecode by Mike Figgs.

Director and Editor Todd Douglas Miller used the technique masterfully for his documentary Apollo 11. During the launch of Apollo 11 and the moon landing, the audiences were able to enjoy every part of the historic moment.
