CL - “hello b*tches”
makes me so proud.  of what, i don’t know.  it’s an old song but i revisited it today and it was still JUST as electrifying.  i felt proud to be Korean, a lady, someone who loves to dance, someone who likes to feel sexy, someone who wants to feel tough, someone who adores parris goebel and what she seems to have done for the landscape of mainstream dance.  just proud...  proud to be in the audience.  this is repetitive, i know.  i ended up watching because of parris’s (or parris$’s, rather) newly released “yummy” film for the j. bieber song.  which, again, was electrifying.  or as i put it to my friend HG, who i texted this morning bc she is an incredible dancer, it was raw and un-airbrushed and un-pretty.  the last part made me feel the most, i think.  i love what parri$ has done with polyswagg” as she put it, apparently.  as i was explaining to poor paul why i felt the video was so important and so sharp in how it captured this moment in mainstream dance culture, i talked about how the video felt very post-me too movement to me.  HG was not terribly impressed and said the choreography was very basic and repetitive and not groundbreaking, and just trademark parri$ in its use of a massive army of strong women etc.  but then i watched the dance video that HG said impressed her most recently, and while the moves were very intricate and complex and skillful etc., i told her that it just didn’t move me on an intuitive gut feels level.  it didn’t make me tremble when i watched, the way i did when i watched the yummy dance video for the second time and wondered if i was floored by the vibes in it or whether i just wasn’t a big fan.  anyway, this has been on my mind all morning and last night so i thought it would make sense to write it out instead of google searching more soundbites about parri$ and j. bieber’s disappointing new single and CL and BTS and whatnot.  so really i’m hoping that this sort of throwing up onto the paper saves me time throughout my day rather than waste it.  that is the last thing i need, given that i have to relieve the nanny at x o’clock no matter what, ya hear.

The Royal Family is a dance crew founded by Parris Goebel, an Auckland-born dancer, and choreographer who is famous for her singular style, Polyswagg which she describes as  summoned by ancestral powers to convey the rawness of heritage through strength, confidence, and attitude, leaving a charismatic synergy on stage.” She started her first dance crew, ReQuest, with three other Polynesian teenagers when she was just 15. In her work, Parris centers her identity as a Polynesian, Samoan, dancer despite facing a lack of recognition and support early in her career. She actively works to create opportunities for dancers within her own community at The Royall Family’s Palace Studio in Auckland New Zealand

What does the all-girl slayage choreography on Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” video and Taeyang’s hard-hitting moves on “Ringa Linga” have in common? No, not a hot male artist who excels at dance, but the “Polyswagg” creator and world-renowned choreographer who’s taking the industry by storm. I’m, of course, talking about Parris Goebel. Even if you’re not familiar with the 24-year-old’s name, you’re aware of her work. If not from taking center stage in the Biebs’ video, her participation with her female dance squad ReQuest on “America’s Best Dance Crew,” or acting in the movie “Step Up 5,” then you might remember a certain girl in chains in BIGBANG’s “Bang Bang Bang” music video or the dancer with the bangs on CL’s “Hello Bitches.” To read more, http://kultscene.com/hello-bitches-choreographer-parris-goebel-talks-cl-women-empowerment-through-dance-interview/
