This one is rain and compassion.

The flightsuit is tightly woven, and it has a layer of polysheen on top to make the rain roll off. Or, it used to. The armorer can forge a new helmet from a pile of scraps, but fabrics are beyond her ken.

He knew the weather would be bad, and he knew if he set the Crest down close to the farming station he'd spook the cows and give himself away. But there's a bonus in it if he meets the client's deadline.

The rain seeps past what's left of the polysheen, the chill seeps into his skin, and Din repeats a number in his head.

Over and over, step after step: the price on today's quarry's head.

His teeth chatter. His hands feel stiff. Heavy raindrops blend in the air around him. Water runs down his helmet and slides into the bunched cloth at his neck. Cold and wet creep past the seams of his boots.

The station is a grey square in the water-logged air. The doorway, through his visor, is a blurry-edged rectangle. The man standing in the doorway is warmly clothed and dry, and he doesn't move to run.

His face matches the bounty puck that Din balances in a flat open palm. When Din shivers, the image wavers.

"Can we wait out the rain, at least?" the quarry says. Behind him, flames crackle in a stone fireplace.

Beneath the helmet, Din tries to get his face unfrozen enough to form words. I can bring you in…

"It's a hard life out there, isn't it," the quarry says. "Come in and get warm. Let the fire dry your clothes."

The rain beats against Din's shoulders, pattering off durasteel pauldrons.

The wind picks up.

Din looks past the man's shoulder, scans the room. No obvious weapons. The furniture is plain and the light is cheerful.

"I guess you wouldn't drink tea if I offered it, would you?"

"No."

"Still," says the quarry. "It's nasty out there." He steps to one side, clearing space for Din to pass, then closing and latching the door. "You can threaten me when the rain stops," he says, showing Din to a chair by the fire. "Can't say I won't try to run."
