A/N: Like I said on AO3, I'm not, nor have I ever been, in a polyamorous relationship. I did some research, but obviously if I did/said anything wrong please let me know so I can correct it! I appreciate feedback and I am hoping to make this a sort of series. I'm not sure if there will be a central plot. Most likely just a series of one shots.

The entire night was wonderful. Surrounded by all the people she loved; her team, her boys, even her mom was there! JJ didn’t think anything could possibly ruin this night for her. She had just married the man she loves and she was currently dancing with Henry. That’s when she heard the hushed voices of her boss, Aaron and her coworker Dave. 

“Yeah, we’re going to talk about it on Monday, but Emily is most likely going to take the Unit Chief job in London.” Aaron said, he had a bit of a sad smile, “I’ll be sad to see her go, but I’m glad she’s moving up. It’ll be a great fit for her.” He said.

“I agree. I’m proud of her.” Dave said, sipping his scotch. JJ felt her heart sink. London? She scooped up Henry and carried him over to Will. The boy was already starting to doze off on her shoulder and she figured it was about time to get him home and in bed. She handed him off to his daddy and gave her new husband a kiss.

“I have to find Emily…” JJ said, her voice shaking a little.

“Is everything okay, hun?” Will asked, rubbing her arm as a comfort. She melted into the touch.

“Um, I’m not sure yet… I heard Aaron say that she is moving to London… Taking the unit chief position there. I have to talk to her.” JJ said. Will kissed her cheek.

“Okay, I’ve got him. You go ahead.” Will said. JJ smiled and made her way through the crowd of her friends and family, looking for Emily. She paused for a second, seeing Emily sitting on the couch inside of Dave’s mansion. She considered herself lucky. She and Emily had started a secret (and mostly sexual) relationship only a couple months into Emily’s start at the BAU. Once she met Will, she had discussed her feelings for both of them with each one before having a conversation between all three. Will and Emily had actually hit it off and became fast friends and JJ was happy to have both of her loves. That was when things got romantic with both of them and things had just gotten better from there. 

“Hey, Em.” JJ said as she sat down, smoothing out her wedding dress. She could tell Emily was deep in thought.

“Hey, JJ.” Emily murmured, bumping her shoulder into JJ’s. 

“I, uh, I heard Aaron say…” JJ started, Emily squeezed her eyes shut and sighed.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.” Emily said. JJ wrapped an arm around her, “And especially not on the night that we’re supposed to be celebrating you and Will.” 

“Em, it's okay. I-I think it's an amazing opportunity for you.” JJ said, pulling Emily closer. Emily laid her head on JJ’s shoulder and closed her eyes again.

“It is… And you know how it's been for me… being back and,” She sighed, “I just need a change.” She said, JJ nodded.

“I get it, Em. Do, uh, do you want to talk about what this means… for us?” JJ asked her. She didn’t want to pressure Emily into making any decisions but surely Emily had thought of her relationship with JJ.

“I’m not sure, J…” Emily bit her lip, willing the tears to just stay put. 

“We can figure it out together.” JJ offered. Emily finally looked at JJ and that’s when the tears started falling.

“I’ll be in London, JJ. It’s over 3,000 miles away… And, really, we can’t even do visits. You’ll be on cases and when you’re not on cases you’re going to want to be home with your boys.” Emily said, trying to wipe the tears away faster than they could fall, “And I’ll be running a field office. I’ll have my own cases and there’s no way to ensure I’ll be available for visits.” She explained. JJ had tears falling from her own eyes now.

“We can make it work, Em, we can-”

“No… Eventually it’ll just fizzle out. We’ll both be tired of traveling and-” Emily sobbed as she fell into JJ’s arms. JJ was crying at this point. The two women held onto each other, neither really wanting to let go.

After a couple minutes of this, the two separated and wiped their own tears. Emily squeezed JJ’s hand and looked at her again.

“I love you, JJ,” Emily said, rubbing her thumb across the back of JJ’s hand.

“I love you, too.” JJ breathed out, pulling Emily into a tight hug.

“Ya know, we can still be friends.” Emily said with a smile. JJ pressed her forehead to Emily’s

“Of course we can, Em… And if you ever decide to come back one day there will always be room for you in my life.” JJ said, “Will and Henry love you so much, too.” She said,

“I love them too. They’re my boys.” Emily laughed through her quickly drying tears. JJ smiled.

JJ was sitting at her desk, rolling the small, double decker bus that Penelope had given her after getting back from London. It had been a few months without Emily there. Of course, the new coworker had fit right in and JJ was getting along great with her. That didn’t stop her from missing Emily every single day.

She had been a mess for the first couple of weeks without her. She was glad that she had Will to help her through it all. The first case without Emily had been rough for JJ though. It wasn’t even anything having to do with the case… JJ was so used to sharing her hotel room with Emily and it just felt so empty. 

“JJ, we’re gathering at the round table.” Spencer said, “Are you okay?” He asked, laying a hand on her shoulder. She looked up at him and smiled.

“Of course.” She said, setting the bus back down on her desk. Spencer eyed it, then looked back at JJ.

“You know, you still have some vacation time to use… Maybe there’s a trip that you might want to take…” Spencer suggested. JJ smiled.

“Yeah… Maybe there is.” She said, following the younger agent to the round table room.

Emily was going over some files at her desk, when there was a knock on her office door, “Come in.” She said, not looking up.

“Ma’am, there’s an Agent Jareau here to see you.” Said the Interpol agent. Emily looked up, seeing the blond haired woman behind the Agent.

“JJ…” She said, standing up. She dismissed the agent and brought JJ into the office. She shut the door. As soon as they were alone, JJ surged forward and kissed her. Emily kissed back, hands on JJ’s hips. JJ deepened the kiss and wrapped her arms around Emily’s neck. They rested their foreheads together.

“God, I’ve missed you so much.” JJ breathed. Emily kissed her again.

“I’ve missed you too, J.” Emily said. JJ smiled.

“Emily…”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t make me say goodbye again.”

a/n took a while, so sorry about that! this is also my first polyamorous post so i’m excited about that :D

★ you’re probably at a bar with the team, celebrating a case that went by easily.

★ yeah everybody’s drinking (minus spencer and his arnold palmer), but you are HAMMERED.

★ stumbling around, slurring your speech, giggling and flushed type of drunk.

★ as such, you have to be supervised. downside is that you are probably the single worst person to look after while drunk because you are incredibly good at getting other people drunk too.

★ so penelope was originally slated to supervise you, but ten minutes after she joined you, you and her were drunkenly giggling about nothing at all.

★ the rest of the team that are present are also quick inebriated, but elle and jj didn’t drink that much tonight. so now they’re stuck with you.

★ they take the initiative and decide to take the team to their respective homes. after dropping everyone off at their houses, the only person left was you.

★ elle holds you upright the most as her and jj carry you to your front door. while elle has her arm around your waist and you arm around the back of her neck, jj fishes into your pockets for your keys. it’s definitely worrying that you don’t really react.

★ they practically drag you inside and then drag you some more to your bedroom after jj closes the door and takes off your shoes.

★ they plop you down onto your bed as you groan drunkenly. jj goes to get an aspirin and some water for when you go to sleep and wake up with a wicked hangover.

★ elle, on the other hand, tries to make sure you’re comfortable by only taking off your pants and situating you under the covers.

★ after she pulls the blanket up about halfway over you, you reach out and pull her into the bed with you, immediately wrapping your arms around her as if she were a stuffed animal.

★ jj returns with the pill and glass in hand to see you sloppily kissing elle on the cheek as she pulls away from you. jj chuckles, setting the items in her hands down onto the bedside table as elle tries to get you to calm down and sleep.

★ once you appear to be close to clocking out for the night, elle gets up from the bed but you whine in response, beckoning both of the women to join you.

★ elle sighs, but jj seems completely fine with it. they both do end up climbing under the covers next to you, holding you until you fall asleep.

★ of course, they end up staying. your bed is just so warm and they want to make sure you get your rest and you take your aspirin when you awake next.

★ luckily you have a day off, so next morning, when you wake up with a throbbing headache and the worst hangover, you find the two women still asleep on either side of you.

★ you do notice the water and aspirin on the table, but that can wait (even if your headache is telling you no).

What is Queerminal Minds?

Queerminal Minds started out in July 2015. The origin post was in reply to getting an Anon that said “Stop making Criminal Minds Gay!” In the years since, it has grown to become a pretty popular tag in the CM fandom. I have always seen Emily as demisexual, she really has to get to know someone before sleeping with them.

Jordan for sure dated Emily when she was filling in for JJ in S4. Jordan caught feelings really bad for Emily, but Emily got scared about someone getting that close to getting past her defences so she sort of ghosted Jordan. (Emily still regrets this)

In retrospect, it’s pretty obvious that I exhibited some very not-straight behaviour from a very young age.

The first clear memory I have of such behaviour is from sometime around 2003, which would have made me ten years old. During that time, my brother and I routinely became fixated upon certain movies; if we watched it and liked it, chances were that we were going to watch it forty times over the next month. At that time, our current fixation was Bad Boys II.

(If you haven’t seen it, you’re not missing a whole lot. There’s a lot of explosions, if that’s something you’re into.)

One of the first scenes in the film takes place in a strip club. I’m sure that, by that point, I’d seen half-naked women in some other movie or show, but I remember being enthralled by this scene. I sat as close to the screen as possible every time we watched it. I can’t remember what my reasoning for doing it at the time was; it’s all too possible that I didn’t even think about why I was doing it. I just did it.

As I became a teenager, more and more indications that I was attracted to women popped up. Whenever I was alone with one of my best friends, the urge to kiss her would flood my mind, until I could barely think of anything else. Looking back, I was obviously very clearly in love with her but, at the time, I chalked it up to mere curiosity and boredom.

My denial skills are top-notch. I could put them on my resume.

(I did end up kissing a girl in high school or, rather, three girls kissed me. Two of those incidents occurred at the same party, and both of the girls were severely drunk at the time. One of them was the best friend that I was telling myself that I was not in love with. On the other occasion, the girl was absurdly stoned. To them it meant nothing, except maybe something to laugh about the next day, something to blame on the alcohol and drugs.

So that’s what I blamed it on too.)   

I believe that there were two main factors that led to the development of my top-notch denial skills. The first has to do with where I was raised.

Think about the smallest small town you’ve ever seen depicted in a movie or show.

Smaller. Smaller. A little smaller than that. There you go.

Everyone knew everyone, and anybody who ventured outside the carefully defined parameters of normalcy was bound to hear their own name twirling through the grapevine sooner or later. I wasn’t exactly eager to hear my own name on that grapevine, and I didn’t want my name to find its way back to my grandmother or my massive extended family, so I did my best to try and remain in the carefully defined little box.

The other reason was fandom. More specifically, the My Chemical Romance fandom.

It wasn’t all bad; I met some amazing people through it, it allowed me to grow as a writer, and the music genuinely did help me through some rough days/weeks/months. But, to put it frankly, the amount of misogyny in the fandom was huge. Every last story revolved around men; when women were included in these stories, they were background characters, nagging wives to be cheated on, past girlfriends who were solely mentioned so that their soft curves could be compared to the hard planes of the male love interest.

(As an aside, that shit is still all too common in slash fics, and it has to stop. Seriously.)

The term bisexual, as it was applied in those stories, was essentially used as a synonym for gay. Characters were not attracted to more than one gender at a time. It was like a light switch; as soon as the two men ended up together, that was it. Game over. They were no longer attracted to women (or non-binary people. That wasn’t even a thought).   

There were no wlw in those stories. There was no femslash. There weren’t any fics where I could truly identify with a character, because the characters simply weren’t there.

It’s hard to try and muddle through your feelings about your own identity when the primary source of media that you consume ignores, distorts, or invalidates that identity.

So I continued rationalizing my feelings as mere curiosity or, as was the case most of the time, I just ignored them completely.

Fast forward to university. I went from living in the smallest of small towns to a city of over a million people. The culture shock was rather like being punched in the face.  For the first time in my life, I was no longer surrounded by people I’d known since I was 4.  Only two people that I attended high school with came to my university.  Everyone else was a stranger.

And so many of those strangers were beautiful. So many of the girls were beautiful.  There was one in particular, who lived on my floor, that I fell head over heels for. We only spoke a few times before she dropped out, but I still remember her as the first girl I felt comfortable having a crush on. Even if I didn’t say it to anyone, I could say it to myself, inside my own mind, and the urge to justify it as something else, something that wasn’t a crush, was quieter, easier to ignore.

And then I discovered femslash.  

I’d started drifting away from bandom for a number of reasons; less content being generated, less feedback being left on stories, constant ship wars, a desire to read about something other the same five characters I’d been reading about for nearly five years. I ended up floating into the Criminal Minds fandom, and it was there, after flicking through page after page of fanfiction and reading all the slash that looked good and going back to the beginning in search of something else, that I found it.

The first femslash fic I ever read. The first femslash fic I ever bookmarked. It was called Lover Undercover, the pairing was Emily Prentiss/Jennifer Jareau, and I remember the feeling that settled over me when I finished reading it. It was kind of like a full body blush. It was kind of like a lightbulb going off in my head.

Mainly, it was like something had clicked into place; like the realization that falling in love with your best friend really did happen. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. It could even have a happy ending.

Of course, my writing and reading habits didn’t change right away. There was a three year gap between that fic and the first femslash fic I wrote. Four years between it and the next femslash fic I bookmarked. But it started something. I began to see the side of myself that loved women as more than shame, more than something that constantly had be pushed to the back of my mind, something more than a titillation for men. The thought of holding hands with a girl, of being in a relationship with one, of being in love with one, didn’t seem so foreign, because I could read about it and, because I could read about it, I could imagine it.   

It’s important to note that falling headlong into femslash didn’t end my journey to accept myself. Some days, I still struggle with it, and I actively keep that part of myself hidden from people on a daily basis, because I’m not sure how they will react. But discovering femslash, discovering that there were stories where characters I already loved were like me, definitely made it easier to accept what’s been a part of me from such a young age. I hope that, by writing femslash myself and supporting those who create content for it, I can help other people feel the same way.

Of course, there’s still lots of stories that need to be written. Stories about women of color, stories about trans women, fat women, aromantic and asexual and polyamorous women, disabled women, all the categories of women that don’t fit into the thin, white, able bodied, neurotypical image that is still all too prevalent; more stories about these women need to be written.

Because words are powerful. Stories are powerful, and representation is powerful, and being able to read or view or listen to stories about people like you is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world.

That is what femslash means to me.
