Hi, I'm law student in a commonwealth jurisdiction and unable to write good exams, they say to practice, I've not tried it because I think if no one is going to mark it, why bother? (Probably the wrong attitude) but I do go through them in my mind. The exams are open book and my uni does not allow re-dos. I tried IRAC, but it didn't work out. Please help. I feel quite hopeless and helpless in law school, it doesn't help when my classmates appear nice but are "secretive".

I hope you don’t mind me publishing but I think a lot of newbie law students go through this - taking a law exam is very different from taking other exams. 

In a normal exam, if the answer isn’t A, you don’t talk about A. However, in a law school exam, part of what you’re supposed to show is your thought process behind why the answer isn’t A, and why the answer isn’t B, and because of all that (and then these other four factors), the answer is actually C. 

You know how they tell you “don’t give me the kitchen sink” - well writing a law exam is like finding the eloquent way to give them the kitchen sink. 

In terms of approaching the practice exams, the secret is issue spotting. The best way I ever found to approach practice exams was to do it with a study group - everyone goes through the prompt together and issue spots and talks about how to address those issues. 

Those study groups - for me at least - were like a lifeline in law school. It’s true that about 80% of my class would never fathom sharing notes, but the few people we put together to study and do exams were the right type of people who just wanted to see everyone else in the group succeed.

Keep your chin up - law exams take time to get the hang of, and so it can only get better (unless you take tax law because fuck tax law)
