USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

historically, when someone says something like "it's important that you vote" I've found it frustrating, because it was usually in response to me discussing some large scale injustice or violence, and of course i'm going to vote but people would say it like that was the end-all action, the one and only way to direct my frustration, like we could vote our way out of this place, like that was all you had to do to be sure you were doing your part, and that always seemed both condescending (because i felt like the reality of the situation was being minimized) and actively dangerous (because then people actually believe that voting is all you ever have to do), so i continue to be bothered by people using "please vote" as a response to any situation.
but then i learned there are legitimately people who need someone to tell them to vote, who might not do it otherwise, who aren't convinced yet that it matters. so i can't even whine and complain in peace, because there's very good reason to be shouting "please vote" at people :|

Y’all I genuinely urge you to stay up to date with world politics.
In my country, Venezuela, elections have just been held and the blatant disrespect that the so called government have for their people is astonishing.
How can they claim that Nicolas Maduro, one of the most hated dictators of our time, won 51%/5+ million votes?
How is it possible that he won when the voting panels have been updating every hour how Edmundo Gonzalez (the opposing candidate) has been winning by TRIPLE the vote?
How is it possible that most of the 7.3 million Venezuelan immigrants can’t vote and have no say in what goes on the country that gave them life?
How is it possible that Venezuelans have to fear for their life in voting stations because the military are set there to prevent them from voting?
How is it possible that the pig that’s called president is currently celebrating his “well-earned” victory?
Countries like Chile and Peru are already making statements that they will not recognize the results given by the CNE (the Venezuelan electoral system)
FREAKING ELON MUSK IS MAKING TWEETS REGARDING THE SITUATION
I think it’s sickening how all people can do is talk about it and not do a single thing about it, especially because as a society we try to condemn any harm to human rights just like how we did Russia, who by the way, is one of the dictatorships biggest supporters.
VENEZUELA HAS BEEN FACING AN HUMANITARIAN CRISIS!!!!
People have been facing literal hell since the late 90s and people in power DO. NOT. CARE.
Educate yourself, educate others, and most importantly TALK ABOUT IT, because I’m certain we’re not the first or the last country to go through this.
This is as much as I’ll say.
I hope they all rot in hell.

In Two Years, He will be the same age as when they started to scrutinize Biden's age being not competent enough anymore to hold the house. Hold that over his head.

At this point I’m convinced the majority of people promoting voting for a third party are Russian bots. Voting third party fixes NOTHING and only takes away votes from Harris. You want third party? Wait until 2028. Hopefully Trump will be dead by then and it’ll be actually safe to do so. But this election is the most important in American history. VOTE BLUE

Wanna give a quick shoutout to the federal judge last week who struck down the Arkansas law that tried to outlaw gender-affirming care for minors, not only ruling it unconstitutional, but including 311 statements of fact all going against the gender-affirming care ban in a ruling that was 80 pages long. Especially since these statements make it harder for transphobes to appeal and iirc this is considered precedent.

You (americans) do only have one option though. because of the mathematics of voting you don't have a choice. you cannot let trump win because he doesn't even have to pretend to care about anyone. I deeply wish that politics was about picking between good and bad but we are in shit so bad, you only get bad or worse. please. choose least harm. pull the lever on that trolley problem. It feels bad, and it's supposed to, but you have one option.
There's something very nauseating about seeing people who claim to care about things like morals and human rights spreading positive posts about Biden. Kamala Harris was asked about the genocide her and Biden's administration is funding and supporting and she said well yes people care about it but they also care about grocery prices and it's so evil but it's true. Far too many people on this website would have posted about the big wins Hitler brought to the german economy and called themselves left leaning as they did so. You post about Biden formally apologising for the Native American genocide like wow what a good guy! And ignore how the same Native Americans protested him at that event because of his current genocide in Palestine. I don't have a big point here it's just really disheartening to see how so many Americans truly don't care about anything but themselves. Women's rights queer rights disabled rights all talk of justice and equality stops mattering as soon as the government does it to people they can deem subhuman and irrelevant. They'd let their government murder a thousand people without saying a word and then reblog five posts about how the Bush Cheney Dems are improving the economy and genuinely how do you live with yourself knowing that the only difference between you and a maga Republican is that your in group bubble is slightly bigger and more diverse. I really can't imagine having pride in such a fascist bloodthirsty nation and especially now when it's showing once again the level of violence and mass death it's capable of all just because it can. And yet every day I see people in deep denial that they and the community they live in are, in fact, the bad guys. Maybe you're not the outright racists but you're the ones looking away as your neighbours get dragged off and families hold candlelight vigils for their relatives slaughtered by your government because really, what could you do about it anyway? We have to take care of ourselves before we help the others. Which we will definitely do somehow at some point, but America First.

okay, one more politics post for the night:
tonight, Trump is doing a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. I'm watching clips of it thanks to this brave man on twitter posting through it; I call this man brave because for me, watching a Trump rally live and unfiltered feels like looking directly at a solar eclipse, if a solar eclipse was also kind of like a racist, demented relative making a toast at Thanksgiving. And there's Some Stuff coming out of Trump's face tonight. He's talking about deporting "gang members" (read: latinos) by invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, the same Act that Roosevelt invoked to force Japanese-Americans and others into internment camps during WWII. He's saying that "[America] couldn't have an act like that now, because now everything's woke". He goes on to call out "woke generals" Mark Milley, a Catholic, highly-decorated army general and Trump's former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and General Jim "Mad Dog" or "Chaos" Mattis, a career Marine and Trump's former Secretary of Defense. He also added a fun local detour to his stump speech sure to make the fine folks of Latrobe smile: an anecdote about Arnold Palmer impressing all the other golf pros in the showers with his incredible, absolutely enormous penis. Trump wants this audience to know Arnold Palmer's thang was Swangin'. "This is a guy that was all man."
and I had to pause while writing this post and come back, so he probably said a bunch more wild stuff after that that I don't even know about yet!
The point is. My point is. This guy cannot be allowed to be president again. Ideally, he can eventually be pushed as far away from any sort of power as possible; but first, we have to vote to stop him from becoming the president again. And by "we", I don't just mean registered Democrats (hello)-- I mean everyone, of any political persuasion, who is eligible to vote. The folks in Trump's audience tonight applauding as he praises Arnold Palmer's huge hog on live television are beyond help, so it's up to the rest of us.

Why do you care about the US election? Aren’t you Australian?
Tumblr media
The US is (unfortunately) one of the most dominant government powers in the world. I don’t know how to explain to you that that affects people outside the US too.
Literally right now there is an ADHD medication shortage in the New Zealand and Australia because it’s a major US export here and we don’t make it ourselves (or at least not on the scale required).
We are still in negotiations and the US hasn’t budged an inch.
In 1975, the CIA interfered with our politics under the Ford administration and got one of the most progressive prime ministers we’ve ever had dismissed.
There are US military bases on Australian soil.
Australian soldiers have died for US “wars” and their pride and greed.
In 2017, Trump tweeted about how a deal made during the Obama administration to admit 1,250 refugees to the US (while we took in many more refugees from the US, which ironically would have helped with his whole “their taking our jobs” rhetoric bullshit) was “dumb” and openly mocked it throwing a hissy hit, saying Putin was much more pleasant to talk to than our prime minister. In the end 300 refugees were relocated. Less than a quarter of the people originally promised to be helped. Because the presidency changed. To an idiotic, broke, failed reality TV Star who’d rather tweet out political secrets than think for one second about anyone but himself.
It fucking matters to me who’s in the chair.
