Heaven’s Gate (1980)

1870′s-1900′s American History Film Series

Recently I have been examining the role of struggle in American history through The People’s History of The United States, and American cinema. One of the oddly meaningful films I’ve seen was Heaven’s Gate. The film was created by a Beverly Hill’s director during the time of movies like Jaws and  Star Wars when certain films were given carte blanche my movie studios to fulfill their grandiose visions... until Heaven’s Gate. This film’s back story is partly centered around this fact that it bankrupted United Artists and that it was a hugely reviled film at time. If you look at the records about the film you will see it is often noted as one of the greatest movie blunders of all time. Ironically, this film is also seen by many at this current time as one of the greatest American films of all time including by the BBC and Criterion Collection who choose this film to be part of its collection. Even though the backstory for the film is something to dive into on its own with many details I have left out so I could include this in my explanation for why it’s a crucial film for understanding this era in American history. 

Heaven’s Gate takes place during the rise of the robber barons in the United States, opening with a scene at Harvard where wealth and social capital accumulate and produce unseen levels of inequality. However, most of the film takes place in Wyoming during a time period when the big cattle ranch industry is trying to compete for land with newly nested eastern European settlers who were given land by the US government. During this time period the wealthier residents of Johnson City, Wyoming are caught in class warfare between the settlers and referring to their poverty as anarchy. When the poor settlers steal from local cattle farms, the big cattle industry petitions the US government to legally wage war on the settlers through armed conflict aiming to kill 150 residents known for stealing cattle in some capacity. After some residents are killed by the soldiers that are hired by the industry, the settlers band together to not only protect their families but to forge the freedom of the collective will against greedy industry who has employed domestic armies. 

Class is referenced several ways overtly and inadvertently throughout the film. Two quotes who exemplify this are:

“Do you know what I really dislike about you, Jim? You're a rich man with a good name. You only pretend to be poor.”  - Capt. Minardi

“You're not my class, Canton, and you never will be. You'd have to die first and be born again.” - James Averill

Unlike films about war it is both women and man who fight alongside each other for each others freedom. As the struggle for freedom often goes it is the working class families who perish legally for industry. We know the history of politics is always a choice between two fighting bodies but the director chooses to humanize the working class men and women who’s story is lost to history. America has often been between the crossroads of fighting of the working man and industry and has almost always choose the capitalist. It is films like this that make the consciousness even possible, something that seems barely possible that we all must fight and die together to survive in this system. The American revolution might have been fought by working men but it was fought for two different groups of aristocrats. This movie reminds us that as the wealthy robber barons in the early 1900′s feared the workers revolt, but they also believed they could “hire one half of the working class to murder the other half of the working class” of course those revolting.  Stream Heaven’s Gate (1980) Online For Free Here.

The Spongers - Roland Joffe (1978)

Set against the backdrop of Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II, the play depicts a single mother's struggles as welfare cuts affect the poor and disabled. The derogatory term 'spongers' is used by British tabloid press to describe people who are dependent on welfare support, however the play presents the case of a family who really need the help of welfare support. 

One of the rawest Play For Todays, which many would dismiss as mere leftist propaganda but there is an incredible scene in the middle of this which perfecty encapsulates two passionate men, castrated by the system arguiing equally both sides of the argument. It's the kind of writing and acting so missing from modern political debate that humanises the struggle without taking sides or preaching. We need more writers like Jim Allen right now.

This is an incredibly moving, raw as raw can be, piece of social realism that will be included in the Play For Today: Volume 2 box set released this May; Finally.

Seek it out if you want to see how great TV can be.
