THE LURE (2015)
💁♀️Strong Female Lead
A weird little Polish musical horror film that very loosely follows the original plot of the little mermaid but more gruesome and much more tragic. As horror movies go it wasn’t very scary, but gory and moody (and incredibly artistic). You feel more compassion for the murderous creatures than the human victims (it was just in their nature for the sirens to hunt, but what were the humans doing?).
⭐⭐⭐.5
THE LURE is a Polish musical horror about two mermaids that get scooped up by some crazy rockers who think they can handle two actual sirens (they cannot). We follow Silver and Golden as they traverse the land and deal with these selfish humans (who can all be controlled by the girls' shimmery voices). There appears to be a general knowledge of mermaids/sirens in this universe because their existence is not kept a secret, in fact, it is a gimmick at the club in their stripping act when they first arrive (it’s only after they establish themselves more that they can keep their legs and clothes on). It should be pointed out too that the girls are sort of like an eel-type of siren, their tails have no big fin at the end, but are still a sight to behold when they are transformed.
Now, in the first few minutes our girls try to lure the two men in the band to a watery death but are caught by the female singer, so it is already well established from the get go that these two are (would-be) man eaters. Why anyone would think they could control these wildcards from the deep is beyond me, they can literally control you with a song for goodness sake! The humans look at these mystical girls with money in their eyes (or any other excuse to use the poor things) and are ready to take advantage of these seemingly innocent creatures. Except for Golden, Golden has a lot on her mind and it is mostly blood and murder. This is her nature though, we cannot really fault her for being a creature of nature. There is a part where the band finds out one of the girls killed someone so they just dump both of them in the water and leave them for dead… But they are able to get back out and get over that (mostly, 👍 ( wait)).
Silver has fallen head over tail for the shaggy haired boy who will fuck anything that, well, doesn’t have a tail, and he promptly informs her that he only sees her as a fish. She uses her siren song on him to change his mind for the moment (let’s see how long this lasts) before making the choice to get her tail surgically removed and swapped for regular legs. This is apparently a surgery that the doctors are more than prepared to do (??), keeping both girls alive while sawed completely in half (neat magic trick). Silver loses her voice because of this trade but is excited to show her shaggy headed slut. Surprise! He wants something a little less complicated (like a regular human female and not a mute half-fish lady). This breaks Silver's heart and as we all know, when you break a mermaid's heart they turn to seafoam if they don’t eat you, so Golden encourages Silver to eat him… But Silver is too sweet. She turns to seafoam in his arms…
And Golden, in her sadness and rage, goes for his throat. The reception is shocked, two people are gone (though most will only ever miss the groom) and Golden returns to the water, alone. Where she will be, alone, for ages and rages because she is a mystical being and her only friend is gone. A tragedy on all sides really. If anyone understood the other person's nature in this film maybe things would have turned out differently, but they all chose to ignore what they wanted to ignore.

hey, if you're looking for a good, seasonally appropriate watch, may i suggest the lure, a 2015 polish musical adaptation of the little mermaid?
youtube
you like a little gore in your fantasy? you ever read the little mermaid and think, fuck that prince, man? you want queer text and trans subtext? you like body horror but wish more movies found bodily horror joyous and transfiguring? watch the lure.
it's a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the hans christian andersen story, so, y'know, still got a bit of a downer ending, but it's at least more bloodily cathartic than poor HCA allowed himself to be.

ur art is so stunning to look at i love you…. do u have any underrated movie/show recs?
Thank you very much 🥺❤️
Underrated recs... I actually don't know the rating status of a lot of movies n stuff I watch! Maybe some movie recs that I don't see many people talking about?
- First thing that came to mind was The Lure (2015), a Polish musical/horror movie about bisexual sister mermaids that has a lot of fun stuff about gendah, sexuality, and choosing your sister and cannibalism over stinky human boys. It's good yuri!
- A Hong Kong horror film, Dumplings (2004). It's about dumplings made from aborted fetuses, that reportedly provide youth. Themes of incest and rape. And cannibalism of course. Interests me personally cuz I grew up hearing old wives urban legends about them black market fetus/placenta foods, or other ways that Chinese babies get dumped/killed because of the One Child Policy 😘 very schlocky and horrific!
- Amores Perros (2000), a Mexican psychological drama that starts with dogfighting and goes through different stories of people of poor and rich social status affected by this domino effect. Also dogs are in each story. It's really sad. Lots of animal and human violence/abuse. I love the interwoven narrative that examines different perspectives in the same world. So much happens to other people that we don't know about... Also dogs.
I don't watch that many TV shows actually! Mostly kid's cartoons like Bluey or Yugioh while I'm doing chores? Oh you should watch the anime Baki! It's about punchsports. The story isn't important, just how it really captures the homoeroticism and fleshy body horror of punchsports like wrasslin' and boxing! You don't even have to care about punchsports, it's just so wonderfully over the top in how they draw bodies, and how they explain that Che Guevara pissing on assasins in jail helped him found a communist island nation away from the US's imperial control. Pickle is cute (and a cannibal!) and Yujiro is my waifu. Also sometimes US presidents appear so the author's OC can own them?? Baki really makes you think. A thinking man's anime. And the mangaka's daughter made Beastars. Family fulla funny folk!
Hope you enjoy these recs!

Part two of "Kiya knows that movie because she has definitely seen it many, many times before".
That movie? That's a 2015 Polish movie called "The Lure", loosely based on the The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen.
Love mermaids? Horror? Tragedy? Romance? Comedy? Music?
Yeah, watch that film.
I know it's that film. It has to be that film! The top half is show two "fish people". The film is about two mermaid sisters and their forms lean more into "unusual, monstrous" than the typical "alluring, pretty" looks of mermaids movies usually use. The bottom half of the cover is showing a mermaid in a tub. Occasionally in the film, you'll see the mermaids in the tub.

THE LURE (2015) a fishy blog
SHORT-FILM SKIN DEEP and THE WATER PHOENIX (1233)
I have always been fascinated by mermaids, and carrying the burden of 76 years deambulating on this planet, this fascination has only grown stronger. Over the years, many films have explored these mythical creatures, proving that I am not alone in my fixation. These movies often create breathtaking visual underwater worlds. As an avid swimmer, I sometimes wish, like in the movie WATERWORLD, that I had gills behind my ears to breathe underwater.
In my quest to find a film that takes this fantastical world to another level of creativity, you will find the movie I selected at the bottom of this blog truly unique. It is a mixture of a musical horror show. I am continually amazed by the human imagination. Let’s thank our creator for small favors that go a long way.
On the last night of summer in a sleepy seaside town, an insecure young woman finally reveals to her crush exactly how she feels - and what she is.

Killer mermaids? Maybe, but regardless of what exactly the monsters are in SKIN DEEP, this entertaining horror short feels like a fun modern day folklore about the thing that come out of the ocean to lure men!
When an imprisoned mermaid is betrayed by her caretaker, she must find a way to escape the aquarium alone.

Bola Ogun Creates Black Mermaid Film “The Water Phoenix” (theblerdgurl.com)
Since 2017, The Water Phoenix has been recognized at numerous festivals. The film is very well produced and features impressive effects from such a small budget short. You believe Ogun’s performance as Anya, (I have no idea how she held her breath like that) and it’s not lost on me that her “lover” is a man who wishes to express his love by possessing or owning her.
The Lure is a 2015 Polish musical horror film directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska.
The film tells the story of two sirens who emerge from the waters and perform in a nightclub. One falls in love with a man, and gives up her tail, but loses her voice in the process. The story is a reworking of the 1837 fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, with inspiration from Smoczyńska's experiences.

OCTOBER 7TH HORROR WATCH
The Lure (2015)
I missed this one at a film festival when it first came out and that was apparently quite a while ago
And were in. Siren song.
Help us on shore, we won't eat you. Totes swear
Does not work on women.
Another song, synth pop is this euro synth pop?
Is this European healthcare???
Your boss says to your face go home if you have a cold, don't spread it around???
Is this how normal people live???
Grappa?
Send the minors home?
Strip the minors
They are Barbie doll smooth with no booty cracks
Hypersexualizing the juveniles without sex organs
Oh no wait they have found them and are molesting them great👍
The boys on the beach are band members for this strip??? Bar?? It's like drag club
Okay
Now the girls are suffocating on the floor after being molested
Tossed into the pool, which I'm guessing is not salt water
Golden & silver
But the pool helped
The casual misogyny is....high
SA'd tossed like a rag doll
Ok full dance number in the mall with their advance
Shopping
And the song is like a sitcom , narrating the story
Close up cuts remain on their very black
Pupil-less very predatory eyes throughout
There are telepathically communicating and it sounds like dolphins and whales which is a nice touch
They are using sex (obvs they are sirens) to sell themselves but they i believe have already told people they are siblings so there's incesty vibes they are throwing out
One of the girls has already taken a shine to a boy fingers crossed he dies a grisly death
Ritual hump, kneeing in the buttocks for luck???
Equally opportunity dry humping of all employees
Don't touch me 🤣 the older sister
They are singing obviously in the night club???
Seriously it's a bar, there's a full restaurant, it's a strip club, it's got a house band, it looks like a drag joint
What would these be called in Poland?
Okay the girls jumped in the giant fish bowl for the grand finale
Not only is kissing a band member on stage bad for business
Aren't you going to eat him later??
I think silver is the young red and gold is the older brunette
The young women course are slender in the model drug addict prepubescent aesthetic
Um is this a forth wall explanation song or do they literally have hypnosis powers
Finally some teeth
She's lementing her desires presumably to eat humans
This can be read as victim blamey young girls know what they are doing thing tbd on that once we finish the film
Gold did straight up hypnotise some guy
Missed w what silver saw through the peep hole
Somebody giving silver a cigarette and offering a vagina???
Obviously fish aren't smokers nor are singers
Direct reference to the little mermaid???
Who's this guy they keep flashing to?
Removed the belly button too but kept the boobs? I mean male gaze but the mammalian parts?? Like boobs are
Um do mermaid scales grant wishes in polish lore??
Good guy won't fuck but will accept head??
The duo name is officially the lure
Peak stardom
They are making out for the crowd i will take this time to remind you they are sisters
Crowds officially enthralled
Another eye shot but ... They didn't look inhuman?
Head of talent is equal opportunity kissing the band
Finally the guy in person
Two hooks to the head
Look now the fishman is also being creepy
Was that lost in translation? Why would he marry someone tonight?
This underwater patriarchy thing is ridiculous mermaids are matriarchal
The poleesuh
Are onto her
And hopscotch dance number cops and robbers
Charlies angels
I will restate for the record i do not understand camp...like AT ALL
Now she's sleeping with the cop
Very camp lesbian mermaid scene
Former top singer is fantasizing about mermaid girls who already slept with the guy she is sleeping with and also the band kid???
In case it was unclear this is a full musical there are more songs than dialogue and several dance numbers
The "sexualization" of them men suck as it is is done in a comedic manner
Silver is asking about being a real girl, doing fun human stuff and the older band/club people said no you should continue to do slave labor we will take your money and no roller skating for you
Mermaid fight, turned into collaboration dance song?
Two punches
Casual violence against women but also that a human could ko a mermaid is nuts
Rolled up into carpets
Tossed back into the ocean
Law and order SVU
And not the young one fights the old one because his lil fish not really girlfriend is in the sea
The older woman breaks it up and is ALSO punched in the face and also ko'd
Very casual violence against women yet none of them can fight
Even if the mermaids eat every single man in the tri-city area it won't compensate for all the casual/ norminilization of misogyny & violence against women
They ate somebody
She's IVing the young man, he got beat that bad?
And the old guy has diabetes
So they are all modern dancing? Their pains??
But fine for the next show
She came back and bit off the finger of the guy who punched them
He hit them square in the face without emotion as a tactical decision and they were out then in rugs we didn't get any emotional response
The main whines and golden looks on with an evil grin
Mens violence against women is casual regular and normal , unemotional logical
Women's violence against men is unexpected unnecessarily cruel and vindictive
Then to drive that home thru go join the rival mermaid band???
It's especially evil because now they are in a playboy bunny photoshoot??
Triton is the bad merman name
Silver is going to cut her tail off to get a pussy 😮💨
She will of course lose her voice
Pussy transplant
Who's that's dismembered girl next to her??
Who cares??
Also shes doing it without anesthesia
Oh this human girl is alive and getting a mermaid tale?
Is it a girl power trade 🥺🥺 these women being dismembered by men without anesthesia?
Didn't even really see if the girl got her tail she was also naked too no surgical gown
Wheel chair
Boy is very excited about her new vagina
Didn't like the fishy one
Oh she looks like shes having fun with the zero foreplay and the pained expression
A whole entire slasher level of blood because
What am i to make of this ? Band boy has inhuman sized cock?
Vagina donor has never had sex and vagina will spurt blood during what eas otherwise seen as tame pg13 level thrusts?
Sex is inherently violent to women as shes bad for wanting to get laid and nows shes bleeding and if you want sex you will die of blood loss
Literally what's the takeaway here for this scene???
She has lost her voice
Gold is standing by her sister
Band boy has already moved on after what would be a gratuitous amount of blood for a brutal r@pe scene let alone a virginity loss
He immediately tossed her scale away
At least he's not a cheater?
Yea they're marrying
White suit and white dress
After a make out session
Hours after that bloody show and less than 24hrs out from her leg/pussy surgery
She's not seafoam
Okay she has to eat him before sunrise
I've neglected to mention everyone is drunk or high this entire film
Inviting her to the wedding is wild, i think this is literally the same day
Now they are dancing
Peak male ego
Dance with the girl you just forced to have surgery with violated and dumped
Ah men
And shes going to turn into seafoam for him
Because women love abuse
Embracing the abuse
Sis sees the whole thing and is of course overly emotional and murders him
Because women who accept/ embrace abuse are sweet and content to die at the hands of men and women who are not are shrieking violent hags with no emotional regulatory skills
She jumps in the water
Fin
Well I definitely should have watched this earlier now I need a pallet cleanser for this buffet of misogyny

some movies that I watched on 2020 that I liked
(Insert relatable intro about 2020 and lockdown). One good thing was that I had time to tackle all the things I said I’d do “when I have the time”. What’s funny is that sometimes when I said stuff like “no yeah I’ll totally watch it when I have the time”, I thought to myself “I’d need something like a quarantine to get through that list…”. Ha hahaha hahahaha haha imsosickofitthough.
I have spent more than 6 months doing my best to watch at least one horror movie a day, for example. And my watchlist has slimmed down a little bit. Which makes me happy. Also, I thought this year would only add to my edges and my stiffness, but in some ways, it softened me and that makes me happy too.
youtube
Extra Ordinary (2019)
(Still thinking what to say here. Idk had fun.)
The Lure (2015)
When I say “I think you'd like this Polish horror musical with mermaids”, my heart sings (and I get a little ego boost because sometimes I’m horrible). I don't know what took me so long because I had a lot of fun and I wish I could speak like those mermaids…
I’m No Longer Here (2019)
This movie will break my heart every time and I’ll let it. I'm thankful that someone acknowledged and preserved this movement because I didn't know how special it was and how little it lasted; I liked the honest and beautiful way in which a story like this was told, I liked Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño's performance. Most of all I loved it for what it made me think and learn, and that it made me clean the lenses through which I see my country and its people.
November (2017)
I don't know why I didn't know anything about this film, but I like it so much. It is beautiful, I am always happy to see well-told folk tales… 10/10.
Palm Springs (2020)
This film made me finally grow up, stop generalizing, and stop hating on rom coms. It also made me feel a little more hopeful about relationships. That is why I try not to overthink it, but they do get extra love for taking inspiration from The Great Beauty.
Host (2020)
Social media horror during the lockdown… I expected a lot of mediocrity from this film. But it was the opposite. I liked its self-awareness, the pacing, the scares, and the creativity.
Pee Mak Phrakanong (2013)
I thought this film is charming, and while it's not perfect, I had a lot of fun learning about Thai ghosts and superstition. Also, someone watch it so we can learn the dance and do it together.
Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb (2020)
I have watched many documentaries about Egypt and history because I was that kind of kid growing up, and I went into this documentary without expecting anything. The color, shapes, and shadows of hieroglyphs on the walls still give me butterflies.
I thought the tomb was interesting itself, I am happy they found it, and I like that they showed us the process rather than just giving us a history lesson. Most of all, I loved to see Egyptians working with their own history and heritage, the lovely relationship they have with it, and how much fun they are having. It reminded me that there are cool people out there, who are doing important work I care about, whom I can learn from. And I really needed that.
There's a good chance I forgot 237647823647816234715347783124, but also this is my first post on Tumblr so who cares. Movie recommendations are very welcome though (:

We're so close to the end of this musicals list, and the last decade of films we've chosen is an… eclectic mix. From Stilyagi, a Russian period piece about a youth subculture of the 1950s (weird, gorgeously shot, depressingly optimistic considering what's happened to Russia between 2008 and now) to… Mamma Mia! (weird, mediocre but a lot of fun, also gorgeously shot, really depends a lot on how much you like ABBA)
and then we've got Spike Lee's stage film Passing Strange, which looks interesting — something about very literal filmed versions of plays always reads as experimental to me, and it has to be better than his earlier Mo' Better Blues — then Scott Pilgrim vs. the World which cannot have held up well, then the Lebanese Where Do We Go Now?, Belle and Sebastian's God Help The Girl, Tokyo Tribe, the Polish mermaid horror musical The Lure, Beyoncé's Lemonade, the Bruce Springsteen jukebox musical Blinded by the Light, and finally John Chu's adapatation of In the Heights.
It's a weird list—it's been a weird list the whole time, really — and I'm still not sure how satisfied I am with what we put together. Some decades we did pretty well, some we didn't do well enough, and we're probably short on Disney-style musicals where folks burst spontaneously into song. We skipped most of the big Broadway adaptations of the last fifteen years, so no Les Miz, no Sweeney Todd, no Into the Woods, no Chicago, no Dear Evan Hansen. No Cats! We've both seen most of those films, and they're all mediocre at best; Cats at least is interestingly terrible, which is more than you can say for the dreadful cinematic versions of Les Miz or Into the Woods.
I don't know that I've learned what I wanted to learn from this list. There's been a lot of great stuff on here, a bunch of interesting movies I was glad to have watched, but I don't know that I feel any closer to understanding musicals than I did before. With the horror list, I knew there were broad swathes of movies that we were skipping over, but I still felt like I'd had a solid grounding in the historical development of the genre by the end. I don't feel like I've got that same grasp of the movie musical.
Though I will say the enduring strength of the process musical—that is, musicals where the musical numbers aren't just diagetic, they're the explicit result of onscreen rehearsals—is vastly underrated when people talk about the genre. Process is the basic framework of the format all the way from The Jazz Singer to Step Up, and works just as well with any style of music, and doesn't require any breaks from realism. (Not that I care about realism in my musicals, but a lot of folks sure seem to.)
