sometimes i listen to the police scanner out of curiosity because i live in a very weird place. i just heard, "requesting an officer to report to blahblah street - caller is reporting a 20-30 year old white male suspect seen ripping off his clothes and screaming while breaking wood pallets with a hatchet." & then the reporting officer was like, "*sigh*...10-4. i'll go take a look."

honestly, not even the weirdest thing i've heard (or seen.) just another normal thursday evening, in jerry springer city.

I WAS going to go to bed before 3 am for Father's day, but then I heard yelling outside and went to investigate.

This is the second time in a year I've been asked to help someone call 911 in my own parking lot.

Amber alerts are awesome and they help a lot of people, but they’re also the WORST when you’re a dispatcher because the second one gets sent out, everyone in creation is calling with information that is barely related if at all, trying to be heroes, tying up the 911 lines, and even when you gently try to push them to realize their “information” is ridiculous they just stick by it like they’re gonna save the day and are super rude if you don’t thank them profusely. 🤦🏻‍♂️

One just went out for a parental abduction and it had very specific suspect, victim, and vehicle descriptions in it, but I had a lady call and say her daughter said she saw a silver SUV this morning, the driver didn’t look like the suspect, and the kid in the passenger seat was a teenager (the one in the alert was 9), and the license plates weren’t even from the correct state, but she HAD to call because the kid was (*gasp*) WEARING WHITE SHORTS JUST LIKE THE KID IN THE AMBER ALERT!!!

I had another call from a woman who saw a white woman alone at a car dealership 3 hours ago who said her brakes were out and asked her for the time because her phone was dead. Caller didn’t see her vehicle or a child but she was CONVINCED that was the suspect.

Like, for fuck’s sake, I get you want to help, but we literally gave out a whole detailed description and you’re caught on one little tiny piece of it that a MILLION people share (wearing white shorts or driving a silver SUV or BEING A WHITE WOMAN?!) and decide that’s worth tying up 911 lines and costing people with real emergencies precious seconds, even though NOTHING ELSE about the situation matches?!

That’s not even counting all the people who think they’re detectives calling to try and get us to give them classified information so they can “help with the investigation”.

(FYI: amber alerts are for abductions with a vehicle description and license plate, not just for every kid that goes missing, plus it’s all done by state police, not city police, and I’m sick of people yelling at me when I try to explain that to them.)
