Surprise trade on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
I like doing surprise trade, so I do a whole bunch every now and then on Pokemon Violet.
I especially like giving out
Pokemon Violet exclusive Pokemon like Bagon, Flapple, Dreepy
Gastly/Haunter, Cyther for the purpose of evolving.
So I send these out when I have them, or something I feel like sending out.

Apparently this one is Violet exclusive too, hope it was delivered to someone who is on Pokemon Scarlet.
And so far, I have received about 5 of infamous hacked Pokemon in return.

When I first saw the receipt of a Pokemon with a strange name, I looked up on Google what it was and some Reddit page I think was full of comments like "now your machines are hacked, your entire game data will be deleted. You have to plug off your machine, change your network password, HDMI cable, router, throw away your SWITCH".... which almost made me panic.
But then thought, wait a second, even malware and computer virus would not go in that far... HDMI cable? What?
And I continued to read through and learnt that so long as I do not use those Pokemon in public battles or competitions, my devices will not crash or I will not get sanction from Nintendo, but if you use them in public places, you might be considered cheating and might get a punishment - is the maximum you might get, apparently.
I release all these Pokemon just in case after taking a screenshot, so I do not possess them anymore but just to share with you what they look like.

I thought the starters do not have a shiny version? Maybe there are. This Fuecoco seems to be a shiny one. I cannot tell though...
Anyhow, apparently receiving a hacked or modified Pokemon will not destroy your devices or delete all your game files that they say. Good to know!?

How to make someone happy on wonder trade/surprise trade (or, Random Trade Etiquette For Experienced Players of the Core Pokémon Games)
We’ve all been there, trading on WonderTrade or its newest iteration for the Pokémon switch games, Surprise Trade. You want to see what you’ll get, so you send a level 3, Route 1 normal type like Bidoof out into the ether and in return you receive…another level 3 Bidoof.
Nobody wins here.
The primary demographic for Pokémon games is young children, of course. A first grader playing their first-ever Pokémon game is probably going to keep sending level 3 Skwovet, and Patrat, and Pikipek, and Wurmple, and Lechonk. That’s the game as intended and there’s nothing wrong with that. But for the rest of us, in particular experienced adult players, have the chance to do something very cool here.
We can send out GOOD Pokémon. Pokémon that will excite anyone who receives them. Rare, high-level, or competitively valuable Pokémon. Here are the rules I abide by.
It has to be something I’d be happy to receive
It has to be something I can’t easily catch myself on a casual play-through of my own game.
That’s it.
If you want more concrete advice, you might follow these suggestions. Since I specified that this guide is for experienced players, I’m assuming the reader can easily acquire plenty of the suggestions below via breeding, or chaining, or grinding away on the Dynamax Adventure for legendaries. What I am NOT suggesting is using glitches, bots, programs, etc to create fake Pokémon. The “market,” as it were, is already flooded by shiny, 6IV, level 100 Pokémon that are completely illegitimate. I have received quite a few myself all nicknamed things like FAKEPOKEMON.COM and such. Very annoying. Use my guide to send out legitimate Pokémon or don’t do it at all.
Things to send out
STARTER POKÉMON!!!! The most sought-after Pokémon in any game are the cute starters. Even better if it’s a game that allows the full national dex on it so you can breed and send starter Pokémon from any generation
Leftover level 1 Pokémon hatchlings with several perfect IVs. Personally I’m building a Pokedex of 5-6 perfect IV Pokémon for my own satisfaction. Along the way I’ve bred hundreds of hatchlings with just 3 or 4 perfect IVs, and these are good “fodder” for Surprise Trades. Be sure to MARK the perfect IVs using the 🖤⚫️◼️ etc or else nobody will realize the Fletchling you sent them is actually a competitive battler.
Shiny Pokémon. I’ve only done this in one game where I was grinding special attack EVs on dozens, hundreds of Golduck in SunMoon using the feature where Alolan Pokémon call for help when distressed. With the increased likelihood of finding a shiny the longer you kept the battle running, over the course of several weeks I encountered like 10 or 12 shiny Golduck. I kept one and WonderTraded the others. I’ve definitely hung onto, well, every single other shiny I’ve encountered or bred. Needless to say this is a RARE gift.
Hidden abilities. Pokémon with their Hidden Ability are harder to get, plus the HA is often just. A better ability LOL
Silly nicknames. If you like to give Pokémon joke names before sending them out, you might just make someone laugh on the other end. That’s worth it even if they don’t ultimately keep the Pokémon.
Legendary Pokémon. Especially from other games, or at least not the legendaries from the game’s box art—those are all practically given to the player with no effort during the course of the story.
Version exclusives. Each pair of games contains a few Pokémon that are available in one version but not the other. Breed a box of Pokémon exclusive to your game and send them out to help people fill their Pokedex.
Rare Pokémon. The ones that have a 1% chance of showing up in the grass. If you can spare someone else from slogging through hard-to-reach areas and spending hours looking for a rare Pokémon, do it.
Evolved Pokémon with difficult evolution methods. Pokémon that evolve with stones, at extremely high levels, in particular locations, with rare items, etc.
Pokémon that evolve through trade. If you send out a box of Haunter, each one will evolve into Gengar when it’s received. It’s nice. :3 An amazing gift would be a Pokémon that evolves when traded with a rare item, like Scyther + Steel Coat + trade = Scizor, but you’d have to be willing to part with the item.
Very cute or popular Pokémon from other generations. Unfortunately this is no longer….a Thing now that the switch games do NOT have the national Pokedex. It sucks. One of my favorite things to do was send out boxes of Pokémon from earlier generations that you could never catch in the current generation. Well, if they update SV with the full national Pokedex, we can all do that again.
Themed calendar Pokémon. Pumpkaboo in October, Luvdisc on Valentine’s Day, Solrock nicknamed “Sunscreen” in summer. I always breed a few boxes of 4-5IV, rare, powerful Pokémon (like pseudo-legendaries) with Christmas names and send them out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. My assumption is that a lot of little kids are getting the newest games for Christmas and they could use a powerhouse in their corner for their playthrough.
That’s really it! Happy trading! Go make someone happy!!!!

I was talking and I mentioned that I have my old Game Boy and original Pokemon cartridge. I said, "I think they still work."
I was told, "The internal batteries on the Game Boy cartridges have run out. They're all dead."
"Oh," I said, trying not to show how crestfallen I was. I felt like I was losing nerd cred for not knowing that, although I never kept up with that type of info anyway. I'm here for the fantasy and imaginative aspects of games, and tend not to follow the competitive or technical details.
I tried not to feel anything as I went home. If they were real animals, I reminded myself, I would have had to say goodbye long ago.
But like so many other people, Pokemon was my childhood. It was all I thought about and dreamed about, and the closest thing I could imagine to heartbreak was the knowledge that they weren't real. I spent nearly all my time writing longhand self-insert Pokemon fanfiction--far more than I spent actually playing the game. My Pokemon were with me in my imagination wherever I went. I started playing Pokemon Blue when I was 5, and the last time I had played it was probably when I was 9 or 10. I remembered I had turned it on again one more time after that, not to play it, but to look at my childhood Pokemon.
It was during high school, after a move overseas that completely upended my life, and I was struggling with the crushing blow of being taken away from everything I knew and trying to make sense of anything (least of all adolescence) in another language. All I wanted was to go back to childhood and have everything go back to how it was before.
Seeing my Pokemon, just as I'd left them, had comforted me. I had looked at their stats pages, taken photos of them with my digital camera (that I don't even know if I still have), and then turned it off without doing anything.
That was probably 9 or 10 years after the games came out. It had been a long time since then. I had long since taken the AA batteries out of my Game Boy Color and left it untouched. I didn't even have AA batteries anymore.
It had worked then. But now it had been 27 years... I thought about not trying to turn my cartridge back on. As long as I didn't turn it on, I could believe my Pokemon were still there, the way I remembered them.
On my day off, which happened to be Pokemon Day, I googled and read that some people on forums and Reddit were still able to play their original Pokemon games.
Then... it was possible. I went out to buy toothpaste. At the store, I asked where I could find AA batteries.
It was a big thing for me to be able to go to the store and buy things myself. When I moved at age 13, I felt like something went wrong with growing up. It was difficult to follow what people were saying, and people didn't always understand what I said either. I had been introverted even in English, but now I had enough negative experiences that I became afraid and stopped trying to talk to people altogether.
I threw myself into video games and reliving childhood memories. The internet was where I could communicate in my first language and understand. I lived online and didn't interact with the real world. On the internet I felt like I was understood and could find people who shared my interests the way I did, but in the real world it always felt like I could get hurt if anyone knew me.
I realize now that I could have had a better experience overseas if I'd known how to adapt and socialize, but this was not something I knew even in English, and trying to learn in another language made it ten times harder. I'm sorry now for missing out on interactions that I know I could have had, but I just didn't know how. I wouldn't know how until I learned, and it took me a long time to learn.
I grew up online, in the company of others who had trouble fitting in with the real world, even in their own language. Those experiences shaped me, and the friendships I've made and support I've received online are invaluable to me. The internet gave me a way to live, and through it I learned how to interact with others. But in many ways, for many years, it felt like my life was put on hold and I stopped growing up.
Several years ago I moved back, to not far from where I was born, and I was able to work for the first time. I began to interact with people and feel like I had a place in the real world.
After shutting myself away for so many years, every little step I made out in the world felt terrifying. But every little thing I did on my own made me feel like I was living for the first time.
Even something as little as going to the store and buying a pack of batteries.
I was directed to a shelf at the end of an aisle, and found myself looking at a rack of lithium AA batteries. Did they not sell the old kind anymore?
I walked around to the other side and was relieved to find the familiar black and brown Duracell batteries I'd known from my childhood. I felt more confident about putting in a battery that looked the same as I remembered. The smallest pack they sold was an 8-pack for $12.99. I really didn't need 8 batteries. I didn't have any other devices that used them.
I thought, what if I turn it on and it doesn't work and I'll have wasted $12.99?
I also thought we might already have batteries. I might be able to say, "Mom, do we have any batteries?" and she'd pull out two AAs from a drawer somewhere and I'd save my money.
But somehow I felt like part of what was important about this was being an adult and being able to buy my own batteries.
Yet... what if it just ended up making me sad? Was it better not to know?
I went to the checkout with just the toothpaste and stood hesitating at the edge of the checkout line.
If I didn't get the batteries now, and it turned out we didn't have any batteries, I wouldn't try it. I knew I would just put it off until even more time passed, and then... "Are you in line?" someone asked me.
"No," I said, and I turned around and went back to the shelf.
I bought the batteries.
At home, I took out my original Game Boy Color from the drawer where I left it, the one my dad had surprised me with when I was 5 years old and that I had brought overseas and back.

I put the batteries in and turned it on without a cartridge first to make sure the batteries were inserted correctly. The Game Boy logo scrolled across the screen and it made the familiar blinging Game Boy startup noise. I turned it off again, satisfied.
I took out my original Pokemon Blue cartridge, momentarily having to remember which way it went in, and slotted it in.
I turned it on, watched the whole Pokemon Blue intro out of nostalgia, and then pressed START.
My heart leaped for joy.
MY POKEMON!!!! MY POKEMON ARE ALIVE!!! 🥺🥺🥺
My original Pokemon, that were with me in 1998 when I was 5-6 years old, are still with me 27 years later. I want to cry!!! I love the old sprites, I'm SO happy to see them again 😭😭😭 the Pokemon look so little and cheerful at the same time, which I love 🥺🥺🥺 I know there are people with many more hours on their games, who have leveled all their Pokemon to 100. But these are my Pokemon who were with me through my childhood, and I spent many more hours making up stories about them than actually playing the game. I'm so happy to see them again 😭😭😭
All I want is to see my Pokemon. My other Pokemon are in boxes. Now, how do I get to the nearest PC? Where am I?
Oh... Oh. I have to confess something. When I was a kid, I was scared of the dark cave areas, and whenever I got to them, I stopped playing for a while. (I was stuck at Mt. Moon until I was like, 7.) So I never actually beat the game.
And here I am on Victory Road, with the team of Pokemon I was taking to the Elite Four, without an Escape Rope.
The only way for me to see my other Pokemon is... to finally make it through Victory Road, after 27 years?!
#pokemon#pokemon blue#kanto#gen 1#long post#text post#i know long format blog posts aren't standard here but i don't know where else to put this#i'm so happy i've had tears in my eyes. i had the BEST pokemon day i could have imagined#some people may be surprised i didn't just have a team of water or grass types but it was my first pokemon game and i wanted to be balanced#(also.. i'm not actually even sure i knew how to swim yet at that age?! i think i learned when i was 4-5)#BLASTOISE!!! my original blastoise my favorite i'm so happy to see him again!!! ;;---;;#i started training a drowzee because i needed to put pokemon to sleep for catching and hypno ended up just being so strong i got so attache#kitty helped me earn money to buy pokeballs with pay day#i always thought vulpix was incredibly cute and ninetales was awesomely beautiful#it was a tradition for me to have a haunter in every game because gengar is just so cool and cute (though i never had anyone to trade with)#but it's okay because haunter is also very cool and cute and i love my haunter#and i had a pikachu like red and yellow (but mine evolved!)#sorry about the overexposed 'screenshots' it actually takes a frustratingly long time to edit them into anything presentable even like this#but there's something nostalgic to me about seeing it on an actual game boy (color) instead of only the screen itself

I hate MonForge.net
I shiny hunt A LOT in my free time, either on the Switch or on my phone while playing GO. On community days, I’ll catch every shiny I encounter and collect a lot over time, transfer them to Violet, and send them out over Surprise Trade. I enjoy the hunt, but I don’t need all those shiny Pokemon, so I give them away to try and make other people happy.
MonForge, wrey.com, Machamps.com, etc just clog up the trade with garbage hacked Pokemon. With all the new and easier shiny hunting methods we’ve been blessed with lately, there’s no excuse for anyone to use these sites. Not to sound like a boomer, but if you want a shiny Pokemon, there’s not a legit excuse for you to go and hunt for it yourself tbh. Hacked Pokemon are a waste of space because you can’t use them in raids or tournaments. You can’t change their god awful nicknames. The trades for this garbage takes up the serves and makes them slow af, and they take up valuable space in the PC. I wish Nintendo would make more of an effort to crack down on these hacked ‘mons and make the Surprise Trade feature fun again.

It's that time of year! Just like I've been doing for the last few years, I'll be doing a shiny wonder/surprise trade-away tomorrow! 🎉
As usual, the shinies I'll be sending out are my extra community day shinies from Pokemon Go, and will have 'Fluffmuffler' as the OT!
Tentative start time of 12-1 PM MST, but it could be sooner or later, depending on when the family gets up to open presents 😂 Regardless, I'll make a reply to this post when I'm about to start ^^
Unlike before, I'll only be doing it for one game (I guess technically two?), which will be scarlet/violet 👋

it's so so so funny to me to see younger pokemon fans wailing about how "wrong" cheating to get pokemon is, because like. i come from the generation of pokemon where, unless you were incredibly lucky/wealthy, it was literally impossible to 100% a pokedex without cheating lmao
#just started watching johnstone's platinum living dex video and it reminded me of seeing people complain about that#an action replay was the only reason i was able to 100% platinum back in the day lmao#i still have a bunch of my old hacked pokemon too#some i've been very surprised didn't get turned into bad eggs over the years#and as i type that i realize i have no clue if Bad Egg is still a thing lmao#anyways#action replay my beloved<3#and some old website that would let you customize a pokemon and trade it to yourself with the global trade system lol#talking tag

Not sure why I haven’t posted this yet, but this is my fursona! They are named after a shiny espeon I have in pokemon violet. For some reason shiny espeon is the pokemon I associate with the scene style. Not even regular espeon, just the shiny version.

Anyways I think this shiny gets way too much hate. Also, he is up on my Artfight!

I feel like I never see anyone talk about how great surprise trades are as a concept. Sure, a lot of it is trash but as someone who always trades eggs out onto Wonder Trade and occasionally trades important 'mons to me, I've gotten some of my favorite little pets from it.
I've got a box dedicated to people who brought a 'mon over from a previous game because I feel they've earned the respect they have. I've randomly got a Hariyama that came from Kalos that was caught during the release week, and I plan to use it a bit in my first playthrough of Arceus (yes, I know I'm behind thank you.) One of my favorite Pokemon I own is a Charmander that was traded to me in Violet through surprise trade named Left Shoe, and that name tickled me so much I made sure to get as many Switch ribbons on it as I could, and used it a bunch in Gigantamax in Sword.
So thank you, surprise traders. And thank you specifically, Mrs. Moose, for Left Shoe.
But fuck you, hackers. Folks, please remember to euthanize hacked shinies, it's the only way to protect our fragile ecosystem.

Hey PSA for Pokemon Scarlet/Violet players:
PLEASE STOP TRADING HACKED SHINY POKEMON IN SURPRISE TRADE.
Not only does it suck because the pokemon can't be used for online play- you're actively harming other players.
People have recently brought pokemon they didn't know were hacked to tournaments because they got them through surprise trade and they got banned for doing so.
If you get a shiny hacked pokemon (easiest way to tell is if OT is something like Monforge.com or RioluHQ.com) release it. It's safer for you if you do. It's against pokemon's TOS and there's always a risk of them just disappearing from your HOME boxes one day or you getting banned for having them.
This wouldn't be such a massive issue if gamefreak actually put into place the same type of hack detection for surprise trade they do for every other bit of online play and tournaments but they can't be bothered to. I've had to release 3 hacked pokemon so far in trying to hatch a shiny because people keep trading them.
If you get one: Take the ability patch from it (the item itself is safe). And release it. It's the best way to keep other unknowing players safe.
#pokemom scarvio#pokemon scarlet and violet#kitakami#pokemon kitakami#hacked pokemon#pokemon#i used to love surprise trade but now every time i get a shiny through it im like oh its probably hacked.#its upsetging#because now my pokedex is filled with shinies i don't have and it bothers meeee#vent#my post

of course it's alive, you've never seen a bus before? it's the fastest and most reliable way to get around here. i guess some spirits might be intimidated by the bus' grumpy face, but they're pretty nice. besides, it's not like they're eating you by going inside.
the seats are really soft, you'd have to take care not to fall asleep and accidentally miss your stop. i only use the local transit, but i've also heard the luxury travel bus is even better, and they even have a second deck. must be expensive, though...

Surprise trading can be very funny sometimes
I got a charmander from someone calling themself dad, which is just a funny image in my mind that my trainer's absent father decides to just send pokemon every once in a while.
#Pokemon Scarlet and Violet#I wound up getting a few obviously hacked and some genned but passable pokemon through wondertrade#might breed the hacked ones if only to get legitimate copies of Quaxley and Chespin (I don't care if they're shiny or not TBH)#Mostly just surprise trading for other starters and good End game team members#and so far I got a pretty good legit Garchomp as well as a legit (if japanese) Slither wing pre-crater#I say legit because one of the genned pokemon I got was a shiny sandy sparks at lvl 100 so it's like yeahhh that's probs not legit#Could you imagine just rolling up on geeta with paradox pokemon when you shouldn't have been able to get into the crater#I did however get legitimate rowlet and scorbunny which is fun
