discord rambling about open world games

revisiting the routes galar doesn't have all the little details old game routes did like unova had an entire hidden shrine. Its just unpolished. There less exploration and adventure in the routes because the devs thought oh thats what the wild area is for but the wild area gets repetitive after an hour and dynamax raids are sooo slow. But then i look at paldea and wow its worse. I'm open world neutral it depends more on how its done and paldea is just empty. Also ugly it looks like an alpha testing concept model. Something quickly and sloppily put together as a proof of concept rather than a finished game. It's why i refused to buy any of the recent pokemon games on release. Coming back to galar after a couple of years is much better but I'll probably get bored of it again in a couple days. well the recent pokemon games have all been rushed they feel incomplete like alpha internal prototypes instead of finished games but pokemon has such brand power that people will buy anything with a pokemon label slapped on to it.

More than shsw and i liked unova's environment with small environmental puzzles and hidden exploration secrets like abundant shrine and village bridge. I'm open world neutral but sv is too big I would have preferred a condensed tighter map like if you took every thing and scaled it down 75% and refined it. Those mountains are so painfully ugly and badly textured.

It seems like after the success of breath of the wild every dev studio panicked and decided that open world was the key to success and every game had to have it. And most of them failed to realize just why breath of the wild was and is so popular. Open world has to be done well in combination with the rest of the game for it to be popular. It can be a great way to encourage exploration and create the feeling of a vast living world but it's not the only way

Gotta give the players more tasks for totk. And collector's anxiety. I remember getting burned out just from the armor upgrades in botw (i never did finish that). I havent played tears yet but i have been tempted to get it. They added more horse colors.

This also beings up the question of what makes a game open world. Like back to pokemon some of the routes used to be pretty big or swsh wild area isn't the whole game but it's pretty big. Then you have like dragon age inquisition or nier automata with several distinct large open zones. And then botw and totk prettt much take place on one big map

Open world is one way to do exploration but it isn't the only way. I'm thinking of the octopath traveler games which are super exploration heavy but are the opposite of open world, they're more like dungeon crawling with sort of maze-like paths

I will praise scarlet violet for trying to do something new and bring that sense of adventure pokemon haa always tried to create even if it's not done very well.

You sighed as the soft breeze brushed past your hair. It was the perfect spring day. Lush green grass, beautiful red and yellow flowers, and your angel of a boyfriend, Milo.

He sat upon the blanket, smiling at you sweetly as he talked about all the crazy shenanigans his wooloo have gotten into in the past few days. You loved when you guys had moments like this. You smiled and nodded your head as he fed you another Oran berry, him laughing as juice dropped down your chin.

“You always make a mess of yourself, don’t cha love?” He used his large hand to wipe it off of you, then licked it off of his hand himself. You blushed a bright red, “Honey? You’re lookin’ as red as a Cherubi right now!! Are you okay?” He smiled sweetly at you once more as he teased you, before ruffling your hair and going back to talking about his wooloo.

“Your wooloo sure do get in trouble a lot, don’t they honey?” You giggled as he told you another story. “Yeah! I always try my best to keep them in line, but it’s nearly impossible!” He laughed aloud, watching as you took a bite of a piece of strawberry cheesecake. You giggled, nearly choking on your piece of cake.

“Love, if you keep being so funny, I think I might choke..” Milo’s eyes widen at that, “NO NO NO! Don’t choke!” You giggled lightly at that, his hands grabbing at your face softly. You leaned into his touch, his hands rough from gardening and training over the past few years.

His eyes held pure adoration for you. Pure love overflowing in them as he leaned in closer to you, pulling you into a sweet, loving kiss. You smiled into the kiss, giggling as you kissed back.

“You’re as sweet as a comb full of dazzling honey, lovebug..”

“I love you so much Milo..”you stated, looking at his sparkling eyes.

“I love you too, Y/N…”

shsw Pokemon can see where parts were rushed.

Battle screen glitches when choosing move, timer between slide show is odd.

Large parts empty or reused asserts with little interactivity. Made for bike instead of walking. Towns should have been half the size i would have preferred a condensed town than a sprawling one where you have to bike between locations.

Graphics arent bad but environments could have used more love.

Region geography not well thought out. 2 ice areas out of no where no mountain and ice ocean area with all the water pokemon not near water gym. The desert area next to the rainforest, the two magic fae forests not next to each.

Surprised rose doest have a duralon the new steel dragon. Rose tower is duralon shaped and symbolic of him.

A button redundancy nice but button mapping could have been better like right tabto open map or check pokemon. right/left trigger in items to scroll down left/right arrow keys in pokedex to scroll down in pokedex in items it changes tabs
