Pokémon Picross (Unreleased)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Krabby puzzle appears in the Cycling Road area, where it could also be found in Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, but not Pokémon Yellow. Krabby also has two puzzles in Safari Picross, with Monkey-Crab Battle being in reference to a Japanese folktale with a similar name. Krabby can be found in the Safari Zone in Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, but not Pokémon Yellow.
While sharing a name with the later Pokémon Picross on Nintendo 3DS, Krabby does not appear there.

haters will set the price of the mega pencil to 500 picrites (you earn maybe 15 picrites a day) and then make nearly a quarter of the quests and a quarter of the pokemon require a mega pencil to complete or catch

Enjoy more copy/paste from Discord:
viBRAToryblurriness: Pokemon Picross on the 3DS might be terrible?
viBRAToryblurriness: The tutorial is very annoying and painstakingly walks you through not just how picross works but every single important trick for solving them that you're normally supposed to figure out yourself because it's a puzzle game like what's wrong with you
viBRAToryblurriness: But also it's full of free-to-play garbage
viBRAToryblurriness: Definitely picross benefits from an energy system that limits how many squares you can fill in without waiting for it to refill
viBRAToryblurriness: And having a premium currency for unlocking literally everything in the game from making the energy system suck less to getting new puzzles to do
viBRAToryblurriness: Where of course everything so far costs a minimum of 30 and at least as high as 100 (probably more later), but you get like 1-3 for everything you do
viBRAToryblurriness: Conclusion: the world benefits from the eShop having shut down so no one else can play this anymore
viBRAToryblurriness: And losing Twilight Princess Picross is a price I'm willing to pay for that especially because I already downloaded it a while ago

Gaming Log for July/4/2023
Nintendo GameCube
1. Paper Mario 2- got the second stone key in Schwonk's Fortress, beat the golden fuzzy and the fuzzy horde, Koops joined my party, stormed Hooktails Castle, leveled up once and chose BP next is HP, and beat the Red Bones and a few Dry Bones.
Nintendo 3DS
1. Pokemon Picross- did the daily training thing. I don't have enough picrites to unlock the next levels
2. Pokemon Platinum- trained Spoopy Bat, my Zubat, a bit but didn't level him up, caught a Budew, and added data for Budew to the Pokedex
3. Pokemon Yellow- caught a Clefairy and added data for Clefairy to the Pokedex
4. Pokemon Blue- battled on the S.S. Anne a bit.
5. Pokemon Battle Trozei- did a level and won.

It's really weird that Pokémon Picross was one of the earliest Pokémon games to get canceled. Unlike the other canceled games, Pokémon Picross is a lot more simplistic in terms of gameplay and design. Pokémon was also at the height of its popularity at this point in not just Japan but the whole world as well. The build we have of the game is even in a complete state and seemed ready for release. If a game Pokémon Picross didn't have anything going against it and was that close to its release window, then why was it left behind?
If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Jupiter was just getting tired of making Picross games. I could be making up nonsense. But if you look at the games they put out over the years, you'll start to notice a few things.
Tumblr media
Starting with the Game Boy and Mario's Picross, you'll see that Jupiter was cranking out new Picross titles almost every year. Even after they finished making ones with Mario, they just moved on to other properties on different platforms. When they got to the Satellaview add-on, they went for any big Nintendo franchise they could get the rights to. One of those franchises just happened to be Pokémon.
But when Jupiter got to working on a Picross game centered entirely on Pokémon, things started to slow down.
Tumblr media
Look at the list. Pokémon Picross is the only Picross game Jupiter developed for the Game Boy Color. Not only is it the only canceled Jupiter game for the system, but it was also the last Picross game. After the Game Boy Color, Jupiter went to work on other projects.
Tumblr media
There wasn't a single Picross game released for the Game Boy Advance or even the GameCube. And even though a new Picross game would get released as Picross DS in 2007, Pokémon Picross basically spelled the end for the Picross games for a good 8 years. Jupiter probably believed that people didn't care much for Picross games anymore and pulled the plug on them alongside Pokémon Picross itself at the last minute. It wasn't until they saw the casual environment created by the DS that they brought back the brand for the new system. I guess it worked out for them because now they're going back to making new Picross games for the Switch. (Including licenses like SEGA and Kemono Friends.)
I still find it baffling that we went 8 full years without a new Picross game. It goes to show that markets might have an influence on the way a company manages its projects. After years of neglect, I'm just glad we have more Picross games. I'm even more happy that we have the ROM for Pokémon Picross and that it's no longer lost.
If I have to say something about the magazine article, the writer clearly misunderstood the gameplay mechanics of Picross and nanogram puzzles in general. It's about using numbers to fill in a grid to make a picture of some kind. Then again, a puzzle game that blends crosswords with tetris-like gameplay sounds like an interesting idea.
Tumblr media
This is a shot of the GBC Pokémon Picross from a magazine called Pocket Gamer that I own. I haven’t seen this particular screenshot unobstructed anywhere else, so I don’t think it’s on the internet yet? Maybe?
This’ll probably get lost among all the G/S demo buzz going on right now, but it reminded me that I still have this scan so I figured I ought to share it finally.
