20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for the tag @zsparz :3
1. How many works do you have on ao3? 13 (one's art, so really, 12)
2. What's your total ao3 word count? 111,676
3. What fandoms do you write for? The MCU and The Alienist, mainly, but right now I'm also doing a Pokemon AU.
4. Top five fics by kudos: Shoot Through the Blur and Under the Ashes (I'm On Fire), then Hot Under the Collar, Russian Dwarf Hamster Roulette, and finally (Been An Awful Good Boy) Santa Zemo.
5. Do you respond to comments? I do :3 I really appreciate comments and the fact that it takes time and effort to leave them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I don't really think I do angst??
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I don't really think I do happy endings?? Like, I guess I tend not to write stuff that feels like it even has a definitive ending.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not in this fandom.
9. Do you write smut? Yes! Love to write smut.
10. Craziest crossover: I hold that my winterbaron/Lilo & Stitch crossover is very sensical.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yes, although not in this fandom. I had a fic get yoinked and turned into a Tony Stark x Reader fic, and have been plagiarized numerous other times. Just not under this pen name.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, waaay back in the day, like eight pen names ago.
14. All time favorite ship? Look, I wanna be cool and say Winterbaron or Laszky, buuuut it's Wincest. There's just something really enduring and special about Wincest and it's hard to beat.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? The third installment of Shoot Through the Blur is really hard and I'm in a weird place with writing right now (in that I can barely do it). But, never say never.
16. What are your writing strengths? I don't know my strengths, only my likes and dislikes about the writing process, and characterization is what brings me the most joy personally. Nailing a character's voice and mannerisms and making something unbelievable feel believable via the characterization. It's something I generally pay a lot of attention to.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plot. I'm not really a plot person; it's never the primary thing that grabs my attention, even as a reader/viewer. I'm very much a character person.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language? I like it, but I have strong opinions about it too, sweatdrop.
19. First fandom you wrote in? Power Rangers, when I was a little kid. I wrote my own episode in script format.
20. Favorite fic you've written? In the WB fandom, it must surely be Russian Dwarf Hamster Roulette. It was very much a fun write. (I generally judge a fic by the writing process rather than the end product. I kinda hate my own writing. I just love to do it.) I loved writing Zemo POV. Plus for some reason people were really nice about it!!
As usual I'm where memes go to die, and I think everyone's already been tagged for this!! I'm way behind :"]

Okay, I wanna talk about the Pokemon anime for a second, because the way they've been treating the dub has been increasingly ridiculous and I need a place to vent about this and maybe try to spread awareness?
Long post, kinda rambly, sorry.
So I think most Pokemon fans are at least tangentially aware of some of the dub's problems. I know it definitely got some attention back when XY blew up and started getting attention outside of the usual anipoke sphere. You probably expect me to start talking about the soundtrack replacement here, but the much bigger issue at the moment is actually the release delay. Generally speaking, the English dub tends to release about 3-4 months behind the original Japanese release (XY actually had a good streak with only a 2-month gap up until the start of XYZ). It's not good, especially considering the standard set by Funimation for other popular weekly anime dubs, but at least it's consistent and we learned to just live with it. The Japanese episodes would release, the English side of the company would pretend they didn't exist, and English-speaking viewers either had to seek out fansubs or dodge spoilers for a couple of months. However, this situation has gotten much, much worse as of late.
The latest series, Pokemon Journeys (JN for short), aired its dub on Netflix. Netflix of course did its usual thing and released the series in batches every few months for people to binge. This is a problem for two reasons: First, JN just isn't a particularly bingable show. Due to the timeslot it originally aired in in Japan, the show is more episodic than any that came before, even the famously "slice-of-life" Sun & Moon. It works well in bit-sized morsels every week, but there's not usually enough connective tissue to feel satisfied consuming it all at once. Secondly, it destroyed the consistency I mentioned before. Instead of getting a new episode every week, we would get 12 episodes every few months, purely at the whim of whenever the hell Netflix decided to release them. It started out fine-ish, with about three month windows between releases to match the three months' worth of episodes each batch contained, but as the series went on, we started to see windows of four or five months between releases, inflating the dub delay problem to ridiculous levels. Today, June 23, the penultimate batch of episodes released, containing the grand finale of the Masters Tournament, where Ash defeated Leon to win the World Coronation Series. If you read that sentence and thought "huh, didn't that happen a while ago?" you would be correct. It aired in Japan all the way back in November, eight months ago. The first episode of the batch, Ash vs. Steven, is nearly an entire year old, first airing in July.
"Well," you might be thinking, "you said earlier that the English side of the company doesn't acknowledge the Japanese episode releases. If someone managed to completely avoid any news about the Japanese episodes, it's not as if they would get spoiled by the official English Twitter account, right?"
Right?
Tumblr media
Note the timestamp there (I'm in EST). Not only did they release this Tweet on the same day the finals aired, they did it as soon as the episode finished. Even for the people who followed the Japanese releases and watched the episode with fansubs or even raw, this is so early in the morning for most of the English-speaking audience that anyone who didn't get up early enough to watch the episode live could potentially be spoiled from it. Granted, the Internet was ablaze with spoilers regardless, but the official account joining in on the spoilers when the people it's supposed to be advertising to have no way of officially watching the episode certainly isn't a good look. Surely they wouldn't do it again, right?
Right?
Following Ash's departure from the anime, the next series was called Pokemon Horizons (HZ). One of its core story hooks is a mysterious pendant worn by one of the main characters, Liko. In the two-part debut, the mystery deepened when the pendant activated, transforming into a never-before-seen Pokemon that the English Twitter account again highlighted, taking the wind out of the sails of what was supposed to be a really cool and exciting surprise.
Tumblr media
At the time of me writing this, not only is there no news about when HZ will be officially available for a western audience, but the JN dub still hasn't even finished yet, and likely won't until Netflix decides it's time to drop the final batch of episodes in a few months.
And the weirdest part of all this? From the way they've been treating HZ, it feels to me like they want to bring the Japanese and English sides of the anime closer together, and maybe Netflix fucking up the release schedule beyond recognition ruined their plans. Both of the Twitter incidents show implicit recognition that there is a portion of the English audience following the Japanese release. And when they announced that Ash would be leaving the anime and HZ would take his place, they did so through a video with Japanese audio and official English subtitles, with a later HZ trailer even specifically mentioning the Japanese release date (both of these videos releasing on the English YouTube channel, mind you). Most of the HZ cast have names that remain the same or only slightly changed between languages (highly unusual for this series), even extending to side characters like Anne or Alec. So now we're stuck in this weird limbo situation where the anime feels like it's trying to be more accessible to the West, while in reality being the most disconnected it's ever been. I'm super curious to see if/how the HZ dub will try to amend this issue whenever it inevitably comes out, and where the marketing goes from here. HZ has me more excited about the future of the anime than JN ever did, and I truly hope the dub can live up to it.
I don't remember exactly what the point I was trying to make at the start of this is. Just please fix this shitty distribution situation Netflix got you in, TPCi.

Episode 73 - Marowak's Bone Club
Last week before the Pokemon League begins, and training has been a total bust. Ash goes crawling to Professor Oak for any last-second cramming tips he might have. His response is not promising: "Hell are you still doing here!? You know you have to physically be at Indigo Plateau next week, right? Gary already left some time ago!"
So I guess training's over and it's time to cross Victory Road.
Along the way, he's challenged by a Trainer named Saizo/Otoshi. (They changed his Japanese name to another Japanese name. Okay, localizers.) Without revealing how many badges he has, Otoshi challenges Ash to a serious wager; A Pokemon match for all the Badges the other has. (This is definitely a trick.)
The battle begins with Bulbasaur vs. Marowak. This is good for Ash according to Type Chart because Marowak is weak to Grass. But the Type Chart isn't everything. As a fully evolved Pokemon, Marowak has a strong edge, particularly in physical stats and HP, to compensate for that disadvantage. Worse, Bulbasaur's Poison Typing neutralizes their Grass resistance to Ground, so the advantage is fairly minor.
Otoshi also makes use of more advanced tactics. Ash foregoes status moves to try and muscle his way to victory via Vine Whip. But Otoshi spends a set-up turn for Focus Energy before coming in with Bone Club. One good, solid crit with vastly superior Physical stats settles the match.
With his back against the wall, Ash sends out Pikachu. This should be a terrible idea but yet again, Pikachu's unique ability to ignore Type Immunity allows him to take down Marowak with a Thundershock. (I'm surprised that in nine generations of games, they've never just gone ahead and made "Ignores Ground Immunity to Electric" an Ability that Pikachu can have. There are similar Abilities out there.)
Otoshi concedes immediately and confesses that he has no Badges and was trying to rip off Ash's. He did put in the work and collect eight Badges, but he fell for an old-school Team Rocket pifall and had them stolen.
(I love how, even when they screw off to go rob someone else, Jessie and James still wind up going the same way as Ash. They really are just cursed to forever be in each other's lives.)
Marowak briefly has a crisis of faith with regards to being Otoshi's partner, but then just sort of gets over it and comes back. Jessie betrays James and tries to take the Badges for herself so she can enter the League. And we find out that James plays the Pokemon TCG to try and understand the game rules better, which is probably his problem right there. Very different ruleset.
But ultimately, retrieving Otoshi's Badges proves from these three lunkheads proves about as simple an affair as usual. And then it's off to Indigo Plateau!

LMAOO it’s so funny how both Rin and sae have the same number of letters in their name the censoring can work both ways
AHAHAH you fr just get possessed and channel the energy instead of kaneshiro or kiyora it’s aiku now maybe that’s why you have crazy rizz too
IM CRYING the way the TikTok is so specific and fits perfectly how did you just have that on hand (ig it’s a sign pursuit truly meant to be)
SHOELIVER STOP why did i imagine a shoe and a liver HSHSSHSH BUT YES THATS THE ULTIMATE NAME
Wait spewpa fits so well another pokemon pairing W…I’ve also never watched either series I just know people memeing about it LMAOO BUT YEAH from what I’ve seen it’s just everyone’s kids THE WEDDING SCENE IS CRAZY no because the brides side is STACKED (Barou’s soul descends from the sky to shed some tears /j) omg Charles DOES give the bug kid energy guys…
I LOVE MIKAGES MUSTACHE LMFAOO the houndoom arcanine fusion is so funny it’s giving digimon (I think) you should just add a red noodle in the bg….one big squiggle….modern contemporary art we’ll know that it represents her red gyarados as well as the red string of fate tying them all together (insert the akshually nerd meme here)
THE DIAGRAMS the way that it’s all in cursive too has me sending because reading “fuckass butler coded” in cursive the vibes have me crying I love it though it’s so iconic (I’m ngl though my eyes moved too fast and I read that as butter at first so I was like huh….? Now imagine Karasu in one of those ridiculous Halloween outfits and he’s just a stick of butter with a hole for his face and his arms out on the side) ninja wannabe otoya is so real but the way that he makes Karasu carry all his shit is giving when a girl tells her man to carry her purse and bags LMFAOAOA long coat Karasu >>>> ok imagine his coattails are actually kinda shaped like wings though omg the bird motif goes hard I know some people don’t like long coats generally but I think it looks soooo good on him!! Wait ok I’m imagining he wears some like button up under the coat imagine him with rolled up sleeves and the gloves…..karasu the man you are….ok but i fr love the diagrams if you ever make more do show…
Side stories guys side stories…imagine you sandwich them between arcs like how they do beach episodes and fillers guys can someone actually pitch this to an animation studio (not eight bit) the mc slander is CRAZY LMAOO I love that dynamic to the reader and co group
Otoya acts cool but he’s so be fangirling over that like you know that one face he makes where he’s like happy/content and his eyes kinda turn into rectangles/lines and he’s throwing a like surfer hand thing (WOW this is why I don’t write) or like when anime’s add the like shoujo pink bright sparkly flower fx yeah that’s what I’m imagining but CRYING I THINK SO?? Prince being like wow Karasu you’re pretty strong! I immediately started playing the Justin Bieber that should be me audio in my mind congrats you’re now forever associated with him
LMAOO considering that even kaneshiro gave Barou some crack moments (maid Barou) id agree Barou and crack work so well im so excited to read about the goofy shenanigans im prepared to fr laugh my ass off
WAIT THE BUILD ME A PKMN TEAM IS GENIUS I gotta go brush up on my dex knowledge know and get prepared pursuit really opening up all these opportunities and ideas
That’s fr me anytime I use a non auto saving software like I’ll move my cursor an inch to the left and press save (Karasu over Isagi any day straight facts)
Wait no because I NEVER see Reo hate I actually usually only see Reo defenders/glazers and they like fully blame Nagi for EVERYTHING and I’m like are we gonna ignore the toothbrush scene /hj (I thought it was funny for comedic effect but people also take it way too seriously but also the dependency goes crazy) and fr!! Actually I think the sub idea is pretty good the copy ability reminds me of a character from Kuroko’s basketball who’s really good but not number one because of the limitations the copy has (he’s able to copy 100% but only for a limited time because stamina energy typical sports stuff) but I agree Nagi being a miracle is kinda his brand….
IM CRYING THE NAGI TIKTOK your fyp is actually insane ok but glad it didn’t delete the entire thing wait im gonna do a wc of this to see how long our responses usually are this one’s 797 words counting “are” as the end sooooo
LMAOOO Barou’s one insecurity is his tiny ass nose /j lowk I kinda like how ironic it is like you’ve got big angry ripped man with a cute little nose
- Karasu anon
LMAOO NO LITERALLY like it could really be either one but i feel like i tend to talk abt them very differently so even through the censor it’s kind of obvious?? like rin i at least acknowledge that he’s pretty and i’d like him more if he weren’t popular but sae…my opp fr /j /j sae fans don’t hate me
no because that’s literally how it feels like people will ask me for writing tips and i’ll just be like i wish i could help but my process is just be chronically online -> get inspo from a random tik tok audio -> get possessed by the character i’m writing for -> end up with a fully formed fic a few hours/days/weeks later LMAOAOAO it just happens
THE TIK TOK HAD ME CRYINGGG i saw it and was immediately like omg pursuit reoy/n…pursuit references are everywhere it’s a sign from the universe that it needs to happen fr!!
shoeliver best duo and HAHA no because that lowkey fits…i know in hindi it’s a common thing for mom’s to threat to throw a shoe at their kids when they’re mad (it sounds better in hindi i fear) which lowkey is giving barou??? and liver -> lover and aiku is a lover of many women fr
CHARLES THE BUG KID OF ALL TIME the wedding would be so crazy imagine nagiy/n’s son looking at kiyora like “twin 😟 where have you been ⁉️” honestly that mixture of personalities in one room is just crazy work…why not throw in grandpa chris prince sponsoring the wedding while we’re at it /hj HAHAAH grandpa lavinho as the dj…grandpa noel noa the officiant…grandpa snuffy the only one who doesn’t get drunk and helps clean up…😭😭😭
the funniest thing is mikage doesn’t even have a mustache like that in canon?? like he has slight stubble but he was giving too many aiku vibes so i decided to drip him out and give him the full villain stache FBXJSJSH omg gyarados as nagi and reader’s red thread you’re cooking here…nah because we were talking abt how chaotic the nagiy/n daughter + charles wedding would be imagine the tullireo and nagiy/n weddings absolutely INSANE work 😨
okay because hear me out maybe when he’s just training karasu takes the coat off and rolls the sleeves of his shirt up to his elbows and undoes the top couple of buttons of his shirt 🤤 i have a very specific vision of him post-training with reader sitting on a log or smth and he’s slightly sweaty (enough that his hair is just a bit messy but not enough that he’s gross yk) and he has the gloves on and his fletchling is sitting on his right forearm and he’s scratching it for doing a good job KFHCISJS KARASUUU we mustn’t fold…nah because why are both of reader’s brother figured such baddies bro forget being y/n and getting w nagi i need aegislash to isekai me in there so i can get with her brothers ‼️ /hj
nah because get pursuit to pokémon studios fr the plot goes so crazy i’d single-handedly revive the anime with it (jk or am i??) and yes i think that’s the plan!! like toss in the side stories in between interconnected arcs and relate them to the previous arc (so not after every arc but for example after the arcs where reader and co meet up and where they meet manshine trio there can be a mini side story of nagi getting his growlithe or smth)
PLEASEEE THE SHOUJO FLOWERS meanwhile otoya’s wearing his all black emo coded fit the duality >>> literally chris prince sees karasu’s talonflame and as the fire type elite four member he’s like “wow that’s a great pokémon you take great care of it” and karasu’s like “heh thanks man 😅” maybe this is what inspires otoya to sign up for the chris prince scam egg gift program that gets him his ninetales HFJSDKSJ
barou is so fun because you can see him in a more serious role like pursuit but he also works well in a crack situation!! he’s such a versatile character we love him for that…like for example shidou and aiku i would mostly only write in those lighter situations whereas almost anything i do with nagi ends up leaning towards more serious just because I’M serious abt him (jkjk) barou can do it all that’s why we must stan
RIGHT I THINK IT COULD BE REALLY FUN AS AN OPTION i’ll def see if i can think of anything else but this is def a strong contender!!
THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYINGGG all i see are reo and chigiri fans slamming on nagi where are the mysterious nagi fans that hate on reo or don’t acknowledge chigiri??? maybe it’s a twitter thing but all i’m seeing are nagi haters nowadays 😒 tbh i think that’s another reason i forgot i liked chigiri HDKSDK his stans are crazyyyy either they overly feminize him, gas him up toooo much at the expense of every other character (yes he consistently slays but at the end of the day when things are said and done i don’t think he can compete with a fully motivated/unlocked nagi SORRY), or both 😭 REMIND ME WHO GOT REPLACED IN THE U20 MATCH 🤔🤔🤔🤔 all jokes ofc i do love chigiri and yes he’s currently carrying manshine but i thought we all agreed that this is just a character development arc for nagi…anyways…
PLS THE TIK TOK WAS SO GOOD sometimes you just have to laugh 😭 and speaking of tik toks i found another barou edit hehe the intro is wild i lowkey lost it at the spongebob JFDJSKA also i’m sorry i don’t have any other friends into bllk so you get all of my silly videos HAHAAH
LMAOO no i agree it’s very cute it fits his off field personality!! his isn’t as tiny as karasu’s in the trailer either omg karasu’s is so tiny…not in a bad way though i kind of love it i think it’s adorable…anyways i think i’m the only person who’s not wigging out over the trailer literally everywhere i go it’s just people being insane over it like y’all PLEASE relax i think we will be okay!!

watching mind field episode about fear and thinking about . petscop. if you have seen the episode you may already know what im getting at but for those of you who arent also currently on a vsauce rewatch marathon: they put michael "vsauce" stevens in a chair and classical condition him into being afraid of a picture of a pink square. and that itself is kind of superficially/memey "petscopcore" bc petscop contains not only a lot of geometric shapes and colors but also themes of coercion & experimentation, but it made me think more broadly about how the work as a whole is able to make us the audience have those really strong emotions, including fear, towards very simple icons/symbols. and of course this is why petscop massively outpaces most web horror [interscript note: i never watched valle verde or crow 64 and i have only watched incomplete bits and pieces of ai builds / sheriff domestic / diminish so i cant comment on the "tgif genre" or other directly post-petscop works] because it ties its dread and scariness into things that are Not Scary. there are no jumpscares or hyper realistic blood and the typical "horror" moments (that's a dead kid / i'll shoot her in the head / dog monologue / hurts me when playstation on) are presented really quite casually and non-graphically.
petscop is very Eerie and Dread-inducing but it's not (& not trying to be) actively frightening, which is really good, because it is damn hard to make a non-playable recap of a video game frightening. there are too many layers of removal, it's too cheesy, at least for an adult audience or an audience with any prior experience with horror. when i was a kid sure i got freaked as hell reading ( / listening to yuriofwind narrate) haunted pokemon game creepypastas (even when the narration was full of "lol, this is lame" asides) but once i got older it stopped eliciting such a response. i reread a bunch of them recently and my main commentary (both internally and in discord chat to my fishfriend) was mostly "the grammar in this is distractingly bad" and, more importantly, "the bare bones of this premise might have been interesting somewhere else, but this is not it." godzilla nes has endured slightly better because it has an underlayer of "the game knows something it shouldn't" that provides the real meat of the horror, and the creepy body horror screenshots are interesting but not really frightening. it's still not great, btw, most creepypastas aren't, but i can enjoy it in a silly nostalgic way that at least puts it on a higher shelf than pokemon lost silver or whatever.
in the time between first reading a bunch of creepypasta wiki slop and first watching petscop, i experienced like, actual trauma. this particular incident was very much not an inherent part of growing up , but i think "having something really scary happen to you irl" Is a life transition you can expect to happen sometime between like eight and sixteen. and this event is a pretty dramatic perspective shifter. before it happened i was able to be legitimately thrilled and scared by pokemon creepypasta and afterwards. i wasnt. it was definitely not an immediate switch and between age 10 and 13 especially i struggled with nightmares and extreme anxiety over a lot of really lame spooky internet content which i sought out for blah blah blah reasons. ok this isnt about me, its about petscop, ostensibly. the point im trying to make is that petscop gets Scarier with age. if i had seen petscop when i was eight years old i would have found it first and foremost Way Too Long And Boring and secondly Not Very Scary. there's no blood and no monsters and no ~watch out or it might get you too!!~ so who even gives a fuck, right.
and of course this beautifully represents the themes of the work itself. children do not understand the world the way adults do, they don't understand "reality" and all the secret rules that adults (generally) agree on, and sometimes they don't realize when bad things are happening, or why the things that are happening Are Bad. the protagonist of petscop is literally an adult looking back on their childhood through layers of other people's perspectives, and through (somewhat strange and magical) context is able to see things that weren't there before. if the horror was immediate and upfront, it wouldn't be interesting. if Everything was as in-your-face as "that's a dead kid" petscop would kind of just be a slideshow of childhood traumas, which is definitely Sad and Uncomfortable but not really Scary. so the horrors are disguised by symbols. things the audience doesn't already know about. "rebirthing" (the exact implications of which rely on the audience knowing about external, real-world events), "tool", "machine", "pieces", the needles piano, A / B / NLM "phases", even graves and "coffins" are icons that mean things beyond just "a place where a dead body is". it's a story you have to decipher, it takes actual Effort beyond just looking at a scary image manip. (further commentary on the horror youtuber petscop explanation industrial complex may be provided at a later date; for now i'll just say that anyone who attempts to produce a definitive "externalized" explanation of the story is not only missing the point but actively rejecting it. petscop is literally a story about putting the pieces together yourself.) and through that effort you condition yourself to see certain things as scary.
the amount of symbols in petscop means that there's not one thing i can point to as its "pink square", something that is associated one to one with Fear. and the emotions petscop runs with are a lot more complicated than the adrenaline-based fear response they gave michael vsauce stevens for tv. but god damn if by the end it hasn't constructed a symbolic language that can make me feel a deep and immediate emotional reaction to a red triangle. or eyebrows, or daisies, or like, the platonic Concept of a car? it's good. it's good storytelling. mother horse eyes also kind of pulls this in the last couple chapters to contribute to the final emotional impact but i don't think it's as fundamental a part of the story as it is in petscop. also of course homestuck does this like crazy but it's not (nominally) a horror story and also doesn't benefit from having a definite point-of-view protagonist who is learning to interpret the symbols simultaneously or in parallel with the audience. that's key to good writing in my opinion, btw, that the protagonist should either be on the same footing as or just slightly one step ahead of the audience. if the protagonist is way behind the audience it turns into a frustrating Yelling At The Screen Experience and if they're way ahead it makes everything seem completely arbitrary (see hbomberguy sherlock video for more). people may frame this as the protagonist being an "idiot" or a "genius" but i don't think that's actually the distinction that matters, it's specifically about how much information the character has from out-of-text sources, not really their ability to put it together in a rational or intelligent way. and now we're onto a completely different topic so im going to cut the post off now before i spend the rest of my life talking about the nature of storytelling or whatever, slowly withering away from starvation until i'm just a shriveled husk holding an iphone

You ever think about how genius the Pokémon anime is from an adaptation perspective?
Think about it, it's 1997 and you've started that while you don't know at the time is the biggest franchise in the world, but you know you've got a star hit. Now you've got the opportunity for an anime, which you know if done well, could be a cash cow of merchandise and future franchise viability. The stakes are high.
So, what do you do? You've got a game about catching Pokémon, with all these potential battle strategies. Ten year old protagonist who doesn't talk much. The point of the game is to use your team and use the best type advantages against your opponents. There are eight gyms, the elite four, the champion, your rival, and Team Rocket Shenanigans.
Theoretically, you could adapt this all directly. They did eventually, and it could have done well enough.
But that's not what they did.
See, the Pokémon anime is genius because instead of making a one to one replica of the games, it decides to take the concept of the game and the world, and then bring it to life.
Ash? Loud mouth kid that absolutely adores Pokémon. Will put his life on the line for them. More specifically, he basically treats Pokémon as much respect as he would a person. Meaning, the POKEMON get more opportunity to interact as people as well. The Pokémon's desires are just as important as the people, if not even moreso because there are so many plots that are around upset mons, Pokémon that do or not not want to evolve, Pokémon that want to do something different than what their trainers want, the emotional consequences of training mons, etc etc. Not only that, the entire world has accommodations for Pokémon as well, are built around them.
And think about where the games started!!! Yes, there is love for mons in the Pokémon world, but in game, it's more a rock paper scissors battle simulator. It's not cold by any means, but especially in gen 1, it's so simple and more strategic than emotional.
And the choices the anime makes!!! The entire Bye Bye Butterfree episode wrecked so many kids, Jessie, James, and Meowth as concepts to keep the idea of Team Rocket alive while also keeping the show light hearted, the fact that Ash doesn't fight Gary in the League bc Gary LOSES (when the end of the games, your rival being the Champion is the BIGGEST deal!!!), and ASH LOSING THE LEAGUE IN GENERAL!!!! Yes, Ash losing is a well known meme at this point, but at the time it's kind of bold??? Because 1) the protag can lose matches before this but this is a HUGE match to lose and far more interesting than a straight up win would do and 2) again, the in main games, you beating the champ is the whole point!!!!! So for Ash to not beat the champ is BOLD.
I could go on, but the anime is such a fantastic adaptation because it gets the concept of Pokémon but made it its own. It takes the feelings of companionship of Pokémon and ramps it up to the max to create a real feeling breathable world. Ash as a protagonist wants to see the entire world, wants to understand Pokémon and their quirks, but also wants to achieve everything he can. As a result, he shows off every element of the world that is unique to it and carries us along for the ride. It's a good adaptation because it doesn't limit itself to just the source material, but rather, takes all the elements of the source material and uses the animated medium to its full potential.

journeys episode 112 is literally everything to me. ash goes to alola and almost the entirety of the episode is how much the people of the region appreciate him because he’s gone out and made a name for alola which has been very overlooked for a long time (no league, mainly used for tourism, etc). not only was it incredibly gratifying to see the battle royale in general, i really appreciated kukui’s role especially. you can /see/ just when he looks at ash that there is pride in his eyes. he gives his kid his absolute all and then pulls the whole “doesn’t this bring you back, ash?” and just watching the whole stadium cheering “champion! champion! i thought about how his goal for, what, 24 years now? has been to be a “pokemon master”. he’s never quite been sure of what that means, but watching a stadium full of people cheer champion just for him, i think he’s achieved it. there’s always more to go, but watching each and every one of these people tell him to win the masters eight FOR ALOLA. it really hit me. also, that scene on the beach at the end, where kukui just walks up to him and says “thought i’d find you here” and then ash tells him that he’s just…really glad he came to alola. that broke me thank you very much. they’re family your honor. they’re FAMILY. and also i can just appreciate that the writers are taking the time to actually acknowledge that ash has spent so much time traveling and getting to know people and developing these relationships and getting to see those moments really pays off.

Hello! I’ve been trying to write a cute pre-hisui thing for the twins (I needed something that wasn’t angst, you are a lifesaver) but I was having trouble nicknaming their Pokémon. I decided on Fusee for Lampent (not yet Chandelure), but I don’t have anything for basically anyone else. Do have any suggestions? Thanks in advance and have a great day!
Hi, anon!
Canonically they don't seem to nickname their Pokemon, referring to them by their names, but I have been nicknaming my 6 IV Submas team after famous trains, so that's something to consider.
The three I've successfully bred so far:
Old Rivets (Eelektross): The prototype for the Pennsylvania Railroad's GG1 electric locomotive, an "old friend" of mine residing at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg
Zephyr (Galvantula): An early diesel, the Pioneer Zephyr was renowned for speed and can be seen in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago
Super Chief (Haxorus): Also renowned for speed and luxury, the Super Chief was the Santa Fe's premier train from Chicago to Los Angeles, and celebrities and regular people alike loved it, especially for its observation cars and phenomenal French toast
The ones I'm still working on breeding:
20th Century Limited (Chandelure): The New York Central's famed passenger train from Grand Central in New York to Chicago. Was famously pulled by beautiful 4-6-4 Hudson locomotives that were streamlined. All were scrapped and I Am Bitter.
Mallard (Archeops): The official speed record holder for steam traction, Mallard hit a whopping 126 mph on July 3rd, 1938 despite being named after a duck. I am pathetically obsessed with this locomotive despite never having seen it in person at the National Railway Museum in York, England.
Brightliner (Excadrill): The R32 subway cars for the NYC Subway were called 'Brightliners' as a nickname. 'Brightliner' is also my player character's name in my Submas team playthrough of Pokemon Sword. (Excadrill had to be named after something subway-related, it's all about being underground!)
Mercury (Durant): The Mercury streamliners served the New York Central, as well. Sleek Hudsons that pulled a lot of named trains, including the above 20th Century Limited, none remain, as stated above.
The General (Klingklang 1) and The Texas (Klingklang 2): There are two separate Klingklangs with different Natures and movesets (Ingo has one, Emmet has the other), so it felt right to me to name them after two trains famously associated with each other. The General and the Texas were both involved in a famous American Civil War incident that later became the loose basis for Buster Keaton's cinematic masterpiece.
Blue Comet (Garbodor): This name may seem like a bit of a stretch, and it is - but the Blue Comet, a train between Jersey City and Atlantic City, featured in an episode of The Sopranos, and Tony Soprano allegedly worked as a consultant for "waste management."
Big Boy (Crustle): The Union Pacific Big Boys were gigantic locomotives designed to haul freight out in the western United States. Eight survive today, one of which is operational and runs excursions for UP's Heritage Fleet now because Ed Dickens is kickass.

Out of curiosity, since you just watched Pokemon Twilight Wings not too long ago, have you watched the other short anime series of Pokemon that are based on the game? Something like Pokemon Generations, Pokemon Origins, Pokemon Evolutions, and Pokemon Hisuian Snow?
Pokemon Origins is about Red's adventure through Kanto, basically about the plot of Gen 1 games. I personally think it's pretty cool, I like how cheerful Origins!Red is. This series has 4 episodes in total.
Pokemon Generations have 18 episodes, covering from Gen 1 to Gen 6, each gen with three episodes. It was released before SM/USUM, around 2016 if I remember correctly. Each episode tackled some main story plot of its respective generation, it's very fun!
Pokemon Evolutions is similar to Generations, but with fewer episodes and more generation coverage, since it was released recently. It has eight episodes, with each episode covering one generation.
Pokemon Hisuian Snow is an original story with Legends Arceus setting, with original characters. It's a short, sweet, yet also meaningful story fitting for anyone who likes Legends Arceus!
I believe you can watch all of them on YouTube. Also, on September 29, 2020, there's this Pokemon Special Music Video titled GOTCHA! which is basically a trip down memory lane for 2.30 minutes. You should check it out here: https://youtu.be/BoZ0Zwab6Oc
No, no, yes, and not yet, in that order. I don't have much interest in Origins, because I'm a Red hater. I don't remember even hearing about Generations, so I can't say I know anything about that one either. I did watch evolutions, and liked a decent chunk. I think that's the one where Kanto's focus was on Let's Go and it's like why though? No one liked Let's Go.
Hisuian Snow was something I wanted to pick up once it was done. I'll look into it. My wife and I are still in recovery mode so maybe we'll watch that tonight.

Hello! I've come back to this blog to maybe find someone to rp with after a long break from the hobby.
I've been rping off and on again for many years now, at least eight. My style tends to be semi-lit and in third person, but I'm flexible. I'm also an adult (24) so I'd prefer to rp with other 18+ people, at least for romance/shipping.
I enjoy rping with ocs, fan-characters, or canon characters. My fandoms include but aren't limited too:
°Dimension 20's "Fantasy High" (Canon or ocs)
°Pokemon (ocs or the anime mostly as I'm new to the games!)
°MLP:FiM (Canon or ocs)
°Dungeon and Dragons (in general)
°Warrior Cats (ocs)
°Homestuck (Canon or ocs!)
°The Magnus Archives (Canon or ocs)
°Batman/Batfam (Canon or ocs)
I also have plenty of non-fandom ocs. My preferred genre is fantasy but I'm also down for sci-fi, horror, almost anything. I love making aus and multishipping/polyam shipping as well.
My rules/terms are as follows:
No TERFS/SWERFS
No QUEERPHOBIA of any kind
Basically if you're exclusionary I don't wanna rp with you lmao
No Anti/Pro-Ship drama.
I may take a while to respond, I try not too, but my spoons come and go sporadically.I am looking into getting dx'd with Bipolar Disorder so I tend to reply during my manic episodes. I'm trying to get into the habit of letting people know when my energy dips, though.
Honestly, general criteria besides that. Don't godmod, don't throw any story altering things at me w/o communication. The usual.
Hit me up if you wanna talk plots! ^-^

so since you’ve been posting about them recently, what pokémon fangame(s) would you recommend? gay stuff and a good story would be a big plus obviously
okay so here's what i think abt the ones i've played (under a read more because it’s long)
rejuvenation:
my personal favourite!
it's long as fuck. my total playtime was at like 150 hours by the time i finished. that was with exploration and doing all of the sidequests but even without that the story alone could take up to 100 hours.
the story in general is really compelling. the only parts that are kinda meh for me (without going into spoilers) are the bladestar and hospital of hope plotlines.
with it being a pokemon fangame it being edgy at some points is pretty much a given, so uhhhh, tw for some violence, death, minor amounts of blood, a town being captured and enslaved, cults, and the game becoming survival horror and psychological horror at two different points in chapter 15.
there's an additional optional side story called where love lies that is recommended to play after chapter 12 i believe. wll is in desperate need of some fine tuning so it can be difficult to get through but it's there if you want it.
the characters are really good and i love a whole lot of them.
it's an episodic work piece so as more versions come out it could last a very long time
takes place in the fan region of aevium.
all pokemon up to gen 8 are planned to be available (obviously not all are available as of right now because it's incomplete). the devs will also add any further pokemon that get revealed in future updates (such as gen 9 when that comes out).
you can have any of the starters up to gen 8 as your starter (popplio fans stay winning) and you can catch the other ones at different point.
there are aevium forms and rift pokemon. aevium forms should be self explanatory but they're really neat and rift pokemon are basically better dynamax pokemon.
there are 18 gyms for each type and an elite eight rather than an elite four.
there six options for what the mc looks like: three dark-skinned ones and three light-skinned ones. going further there's a masculine, feminine and androgynous option for each. and even though you choose your gender in this game (with male, female and nonbinary being the choices available) they aren't genderlocked, so you can be a feminine guy or a masculine girl. i do take issues with how nonbinary is treated like a third gender here but honestly i'll take what i can get at this point.
at some point you unlock the ability to choose between two looks for the character of your choice. so not huge customization options but hey they're there somewhat at least.
banging music. a lot of them are reused or remixed existing official pokemon songs but the original songs that do come up slap (the gym leader theme??? hello??????)
there are different challenge modes available. unfortunately this is a bit of a mixed bag for me because even when playing on casual i found some fights to be incredibly difficult. if you can soldier through them then that's great but if you find yourself struggling don't beat yourself up about it.
i know this is the part you've been waiting for: the lgbt stuff. like previously said the mc can be nonbinary if you wish but here's the other ones from what i can remember: venam (wlw), melia (wlw), adam (gay), crescent (bi i think?), erin (ace), ryland (trans man), and a character who originally came from reborn who uses xe/xem pronouns. there's also a side quest early on where you can help two guys get together.
tldr; if you can handle the length and difficulty then i definitely recommend rejuv!
rejuv mutuals feel free to add any details that i might've missed :>
reborn:
rejuvenation is a spiritual successor to this
a lot of the stuff from rejuv still holds up here (6 mc options (with nby choice), 18 gyms, etc.) but tbh i find it hard to recommend this one because i’m up to the beryl ward rn and it's been very bland.
takes place in the fan region of reborn.
there are pulse pokemon here instead of rift pokemon, and i think mega evolution is the best thing to compare these to.
i think there's pokemon up to gen 7 here. same starters as rejuv except for the gen 8 ones.
aside from the mc the only other lgbt character i know about is your rival cain, who is bi. there's probably more (such as the xe/xem character that reappeared in rejuvenation).
just play it if you're really interested. it's not required to understand rejuvenation's story and while it personally does nothing for me you might like it!
phoenix rising:
tbh i'm still at the beginning of this game so i don't have a lot to comment on unfortunately but my only issue so far is that the game can be laggy when it runs.
it's episodic just like rejuvenation and is currently still being worked on, with the first episode having been released.
i've found it to be very cute and charming so far. it's probably one of the only pokemon fangames to not have unnecessary edginess. ofc i'm still at the beginning so i'm remaining cautious incase the game decides to go fucking bonkers at some point.
takes place in the fan region of hawthorne.
there's no gender option for the playable character so their gender is entirely up to interpretation. you're only asked to choose a masculine or feminine style at the beginning that'll decide your default look and eventually you can unlock trainer customization and the customization options aren't genderlocked. idk how thorough the customization options are beyond that though.
i can't remember how many pokemon are in this one by generation, sorry. i have seen up to gen 7 so far though.
the starter options are petilil, growlithe and staryu. different but not inherently bad.
one of the rivals, perrin, uses they/them
relic forms! basically this game's version of regional variants. ambipom got one so that was more than enough to sell me.
insurgence:
still in the process of playing this one but it's pretty good!
i really can't say much on the story atm but it's drawn me in. though it's definitely the edgiest one out the ones i've listed so far so tw for these things: blood, violence, death, cults and a disturbing scene of pokemon dogfighting.
good news is that there's a light story and a dark story. i'm currently playing the dark story as that's the original but from what i can tell the light story is basically the same except without the above. you can also change modes at any time so if you try the dark story and find it to be too much then you can change to the light story no problem.
characters have honestly been kinda hit or miss for me so far but i'm holding off judgement until i finish it.
takes place in the fan region of torren and i think there's additional regions to explore during the postgame, making for lots of content.
pokemon up to gen 6 are available.
this game has delta forms, which again, is basically regional variants. there's a fuckton of them too so it makes for some fun team planning.
the starters options are eevee and delta forms for bulbasaur, charmander and squirtle. eevee is available from the game corner after the 2nd gym so you can let that influence your decision. i chose delta charmander because it looks sick as fuck.
there are new mega evolutions for prexisting pokemon as well as mega evolutions for delta forms.
eight gyms here but each gym is based around a theme and uses two types rather than one.
aside from minor npcs there isn't much going on here in term of lgbtness. the mc is also restricted to just boy or girl options this time. i'll be pleasantly surprised if i find anything major though.
there's trainer customization but tbh it's rather lacking. the clothes are neutral but the hairstyles are genderlocked (there is a bald option for the male mc and you can wear a poop hat if those do anything for you).
so basically:
recommend: rejuvenation and insurgence
can't say but hopeful: phoenix rising
play if you want but i personally don't like it: reborn

PREMISES
OKAY!
Fought the Devil and Lived To Tell is a scifi apocalyptic magical girl war story inspired by Senki Zesshou Symphogear, Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka, Katana Maidens, and Yuki Yuuna is a Hero. Fifteen years after the war against Salem and her army of Grimm was supposed to be over, Salem has returned, and now the next generation of magic users must train with high tech magical weaponry to fight her. Except there are far fewer of them, and all of them come from households destroyed by the war. Featuring: military operations, training montages, transformation sequences with armour, and role reversals.
Eight Ways to Belonging is an urban fantasy slice of life college story in which Ruby and Yang are new students at a magical college on the island of Patch. It is an episodic story meant to focus on the adventures of Ruby and her friends, while also showcasing a plethora of magical races in the series. The subtitle for this one is “The Idiot Mage’s Guide to Summoning Cthulhu”. Featuring: half-dragons, winged people, shapeshifting dogs, and ill advised naps.
Unbeatable is the RWBY Pokemon AU. I dunno what else you need.
In Pursuit of an Honest World is an X-Men Evolution season two canon divergent fic focused on queerness, secrets, redemption, and the ways in which people are more similar than different.
Love Most Ardently is a historical fantasy romance set in a fantastical version of the Victorian marriage season. James is a nobleman whom is trying to avoid marriage and Qrow is his newest employee. They fall in love. Featuring: Taiyang is a dragon and keeps suggesting eating people to solve problems, gender is for losers, and homoerotic massages.
Stargazing in Low Gravity is a scifi slice of life story focused on the adults of RWBY on a space station that they are hired to get up and running. It focuses on interpersonal relationships, as well as the ways in which humanity changes and stays the same in the future. Featuring: Jinn as a sassy AI, The Princess Bride references, many a hookup that isn’t an endgame ship, and gravity shenanigans.
On Uncertain Wings is a Winx Club season two canon divergent story that diverges after we meet Helia. It focuses on queerness, the inherent gendering of magic, as well as the mysteries of the past. In it, Riven discovers that he possesses fairy magic, something that should be impossible for a man, and goes on a journey to discover where it’s from. Endgame Helia/Riven, plus lots of other little ship changes, (including Bloom/Stella/Brandon/Sky poly), and the rest of the boys have magic in much different ways. Featuring trans Bloom and Timmy feels, the inherent gender roles of fairy magic, and fly or die.
Thanks for asking!! I hope this helps.

Corviknight
Tumblr media
Corviknight!!!!!
Corviknight is RAD AS HELL. A giant armoured Flying/Steel-type raven, it got marketed pretty early on in Sword and Shield’s hype cycle, for good reason. Its design is INCREDIBLY distinctive, and it’s one of the most iconic pokemon of Gen VIII and predictably one of the most popular. Aesthetically, the deep, midnight blue of its body contrasted with its glaring red pupils creates an intimidating visage, establishing some ominous vibes that no other pokemon can truly match.
Tumblr media
It’s stated to “reign supreme” in the skies, driving terror into the heart of any foe, which feels VERY appropriate for how intense its design is. There’s quite a few pokemon that are said to be terrifyingly powerful, yet at the end of the day they still just look like weird anime creatures. But Corviknight looks like it’d be GENUINELY horrifying to encounter. Also gets in violent fights with Skarmory over territory and is implied to eat Bunnelby, apparently. Wonder if it eats garbage too like a real raven would.
Tumblr media
Somewhat hilariously though, its primary usage in Galar is actually as a glorified flying taxi, with its vast size enabling it to carry people across the region in a little taxi box, piloted by some guy. It notably appears in every episode of the Twilight Wings miniseries serving this role, and its taxi service is probably what Corviknight is best known for. It’s cool we got such an obscenely badass pokemon serving such a critical role, but it also kinda undermines that badassery to some degree. Corviknight seems almost wholly domesticated, perpetually working in the service of humans. It probably doesn’t even get paid!
Tumblr media
Corviknight also has a Gigantamax form, which is pretty neat. The red glow of its feathers gives off a cool effect, but overall it doesn’t change much – which is probably a good thing when the base design is so strong. The other thing of note is the presence of eight “blade birds”, feathers capable of launching off its body and independently attacking foes. That’s such a cool ability for a bird pokemon to have that it’s a shame it’s stuck on a temporary power-up that probably won’t survive the next generational shift.
Tumblr media
Shiny Corviknight is a warm silver, which changes Corviknight’s overall vibes but looks pretty nice nonetheless. Not a bad shiny by any means. Also resembles a heroic knight to base Corviknight’s black knight!
I ADORE Corviknight, and it’s one of my favourite birds in the franchise. It’s interesting seeing a raven be played for badassery rather than being the usual sulking, brooding sort but it’s a welcome spin, even if I am fond of sulky ravens as well. I’m honestly not into the taxi role though, since it really kinda does detract from its general feel, though not needing HMs to fast travel is certainly nice.
The most intense birb/10.

Xander: All right, time to pay up and go home guys. Let's see, I'll take this one, and this one. And you know I've always had a problem calculating the tip and you guys being so dapper and brain, maybe you can help me out. Okay great. See if your bill comes to thirty-eight dollars and people tip what, approximately thirty percent? That makes you tip what? (One of the guys gives him all the money). You are so smart. This is so the right amount. (Hears banging in the bathroom). Somebody didn't have their fiber today. Hey, are you alright in there? Buddy?
