Trying to figure out which topics to post about when it comes to this blog. As galars ecosystem has a lot of interesting quirks about it that make it ecologically unique.

Ooh, I know this one! It’s the same logic of ‘why do bees sting if losing their stinger causes them to die?’ Through the act of one, or a few, individuals dealing loud, destructive, and massive damage to a foe, it will deter further Pokemon from messing with them. A evolutionary sacrifice to protect their kin, their ‘hive’ so to speak.
Some well known exploders, like the Voltorb line, are brightly colored - which could be a form of warning coloration. “You see me? Good, don’t mess with me.”
Doylist explanation: They keep making new electric mouse pokemon because they're frantically trying to recreate the success of Pikachu. Or at least because it's tradition at this point.
Watsonian explanation: A major predator of rodents is birds of prey. A mouse that can deliver electric shocks to flying-types has a much higher chance of living to produce more offspring. Thus, convergent evolution fills this niche in every region. "Pikachu" is just the pokemon universe equivalent of "crab".

Bulbasaur are small arachnid-like pokemon that can typically be found in large wooded areas. Though they aren't actually a bug type that doesn't mean that other pokemon don't often mistaken them as one. They use this to their advantage as the mistaken typing leads to what would be predators- bug types leaving them be and also some threatening grass types not bothering them due to the type weakness.
Despite what their appearance may suggest Bulbasaur can't actually produce any kind of webbing or silk. So they typically have to 'web' around with their vines instead, with their (small) nests being made purely out of vines and leaves up in tree branches.
They typically live in small colonies when they're young and spread out as they grow older (I.E 'evolve' into an Ivysaur and so on). Usually these colonies are made up of related, sibling Bulbasaur that came of the same clutch or general grandparent.

i made this post before but what’s up with paldeans and destroying the environment. the player character hops on a plane to travel between spain japan and new york whenever they feel like it to run minor errands. the area zero team went into an ancient crater and found this otherworldly paradise and started building a bunch of giant research stations. the professors thought it would be cool to use a huge machine to either bring the dinosaurs back or summon a bunch of murderous robots and let them loose upon the world. the league is using cryptocurrency. geeta please something has to be done

Well said! I’ve always found shiny breeding to not only devalue the shiny themselves by over flooding the market, but also causes a lot of ecological destruction.
I’ve seen so many gardevoirs, dragonites, and other pokemon around several Galarian wild areas due to people overbreeding and trying to shiny breed a gardevoir. Often these pokemon do not have wild instincts and more often than not end up dying in the first few weeks.
Gardevoirs for example are highly bonded to breeders and need something to care for. Wild galarian gardevoirs bond with kommo-o during their first stage of evolution. Corviknights are extremely dangerous predators to gardevoirs, and often their number one.
People think that due to gardevoirs being able to create temporary Blackholes that they’re safe to release? This is entirely false as these defensive moves take up all their energy. Without a bonded Pokémon or a safe place to hide, they are easy targets even if they survive the corviknight. As their weakened state makes them highly vulnerable to other predators
This is especially more problematic with none-native species. I’ve spotted some shiny tinkatons around the wild area in Galar and had to euthanize them due to the ecological risks they pose. Shiny pawmotts are adorable for sure! However the amount of pawmotts needed to get one is so much that more often than not, they’re carelessly released into the wild.
Pawmotts don’t see problematic in paldea but in galar they are quite problematic. As they’re fighting defensive pokemon that are extremely aggressive and known to push prey species out of their ranges and even affect predators.
The absolute fact that weaviles one of galars apex predators are often killed by invasive defensive pawmotts due to their electric and fighting is a disaster! Weaviles are megafauna hunters of large prey like mammoswine, pangoro and more.
I am very against shiny breeding, they’re a rapid reason why there’s so many invasive pokemon around the world. It’s never fun having to euthanize pokemon whose only mistake was existing in a place it wasn’t supposed to.
So how do you feel about all this…shiny breeding discourse??
Alright, this is gonna be a controversial one.
I'm putting a cut here because it explains some gross birthing processes, and I dont want to make anyone queasy. For anyone who doesn't want to read it, the tldr; no. I hate breeding for shinies bcuz of what it leads to.
I have.... very strong opinions on shiny breeding. On one hand, in theory, you're doing what most breeders do, right? You're breeding pokemon to get an acquired trait that you want. The people at @pokemonpetfinder do that all the time. But the difference is that the shinism gene is so, so rare. And by continuing to breed these pokemon for a shiny, you have a lot of extra eggs and babies and a tired mother/parents.
Okay, so you drop the eggs or babies off at shelters, so no harm done, right? But due to how rare shiny pokemon are (1/8,192) you have so MANY extra babies/eggs, and the shelters near you can't possibly take all of them. Overpopulation at shelters can become an issue, and that's when euthanasia starts.
But okay, fine. Lets say the shelters are ablw to care for them. What about the egg-laying/birthing pokemon? We don't talk enough about how much damage carrying eggs can do to your body. I'm using Venomoth as an example here, because I've seen a situation like this with a Venomoth. Do you know how big Venomoth eggs are compared to them? I'll show you
Tumblr media
Doesn't seem like much, right? That's until you realize that being moths, the lay a lot of eggs at time, sometimes up to 20 in one litter. You ever seen a gravid venomoth? They get super big, and it's painful. They can't fly because it's too heavy too, so they just have to wait until they can lay their eggs. And the hole is small and has to expand so much to get an egg out. Do you really want to put a venomoth through that, over and over again?
And even it's not a venomoth situation, where the eggs are normal for the egg-laying mother's size, gravid/pregnancy and birthing is still the worst. Nursing can be painful, headaches, sorness, tiredness, irrability, raging hormones that can effect your mood, etc, etc. You really want to put a pokemon through that over and over? That can be traumatizing for them! Trust me; I've seen shiny breeding facilities. Even with drugs used to get the shinism gene (I'll save that for a different post), it's still rare, and the mother's still have to go through so much. It's horryifiying entering one of those places.
But it's fine. You got your shiny. That's what matters, right?

Pokémon HCs
Galvantula and Yanmega eat other bug Pokémon, but there are some accounts of then eating Pidgy and smaller bird Pokémon
A Galvantula egg contains 10 Joltiks. The Joltiks latch onto the mom for electrical energy until they evolve
A Gyarados will lay thousands of eggs in a pond or lake, and the eggs are eaten by other Gyarados
Unlike their Red and Blue striped cousins, White Striped Basculin live in the ocean until their yearly migration, to which they migrate upstream and evolve into Basculigeon
You know when an Eevee knows what it would evolve into if it has a preference for the evolution method of one of its 8 Eeveelutions
Scientists can pair each of the Eeveelutions into 4 pairs based on their biologies. These are as follows:
Unique Cellular Structure (Vapereon and Leafeon)
Temperature Manipulation (Flareon and Glaceon)
Projectile Defense (Jolteon and Umbreon)
Empathetic Powers (Espeon and Slypheon)
Beartic’s iceberg forming ability is equal to strength of 3 Ice Beams
Due to living in a colder climate, Amara and Auroras have a layer of feathers and fat to keep them warm
The Piloswine in Johto used to have the ability to evolve into Mamoswine, but due to overhunting and genetic bottlenecking, they lose that ability to evolve. It wasn’t until Professor Rowan’s research that there were efforts to breed back Ancient Power back into the Piloswine population in Johto.

\\ WOOO OUT OF MY SLUMER
Kommo-o and Gardevoir lines of Galar are close linked to each other. Though gardevoirs in theory could swipe off kommo-o with their typing, they seem to quite enjoy these dragons company. As these large reptiles actually have a strong sense of morality and challenge ingrained in their genes.
It starts when baby jangmo-o and ralts are born together on the lake of outrage. Ralts are psychic Pokémon and intune with other mons emotions, though for a new baby it would be hard for them to control it. So they make friends with jangmo-o who no matter what loves to fight and brawl. Scrappy and young these Pokémon rely on each other as there is one thing that threatens them both: corviknights.
Often groups of jangmo-o and ralts watch out for each other specifically for corviknights. As these steel flying type predators are some of the biggest threats to psychic and fairy pokemon. Plucking untended first starters right from the group and into their gullets. Even posing a threat to adult gardevoirs as they hunt in groups and bait out Blackholes for a free meal.
As they grow, these lake of outrage populations begin becoming more intune. Kirila learning more finese with their psychic abilities and Hakamo-o threatening with fighting technique. Covering each others biggest weaknesses and essentially being like a quad type Pokémon together.
Fully grown, these Pokémon travel towards the dusty bowl to live their lives. Kommo-o making quick work of any steel or poison type predators that dare hurt their companion. As well as gather food for them much easier, as they can take down large prey to eat.
As well as intense emotional strength from hunting and fighting kommo-o the emotion feeding gardevoirs depend on. Gardevoirs also give back as being healers and emotional softeners to enraged and injured kommo-os. With these large dragons often getting injured hunting down giants such as duralodon and copperajah.
Interestingly during their mating season migrating back. Kommo-o of both sexes fight each other to show who is the strongest among them all. While gardevoirs of this population fission and fusion their reproduction unlike other populations who partner up in monogamous relationships.
It’s very important to catch them together, as there are stories of gardevoirs hunting down trainers who took their kommo-o partner without them and vice versa.
This behavior only applies to the migratory subspecies and populations of these mons. Other wild populations of either mon avoid each other to not have a confrontation. Though there are observations of adult kommo-o in alola adopting ralts but this is more of an adoption situation than an equal partnership.
Honestly one of the most interesting behaviors from a psuedo-legendary pokemon I’ve seen. And now that lake of outrage kommo-o rutting season is over, lake of outrage is free again!

So i hope its okay... Can i request arven penny nemona and kieran Meeting a pokemon Trainer that is basiclly Pokemon sword/shield MC and maybe hop or marni come to visit? Or it can just be Just the Trainer i wouldn't mind anyway here's the team
A inteleon is kinda like a big brother to the team but still is Sometimes mischevous
Zamazenta who May look cold but is essentialy a big puppy
Gerdevoir who kinda has a sibling like rivaly with with salazle on who's stronger
Salazle who is a little diva but both her or gardevoir will beat you up if you insult the other
And a sylveon and glaceon who are like peas in a pod and will go out to defend the other if something happend
Anyway you don't have to write it if you don't want to since its kinda long and have a good day/night 💜💛
Arven
Apparently saving a region from an ecological crisis wasn't your first rodeo..as you've done this in Galar too.
After sharing stories of how you became champion, prevented Chairman Rose from causing a second "Darkest Day" with Eternatus, revived the Hero Duo (with Zamazenta being living proof), etc...Arven's fully convinced you need a vacation.
Funny enough, Paldea was meant to be your fresh start and a way to begin your studies like a normal kid.
But of course that didn't happen.
Facing the Titan Pokémon together reminds you of the Dynamaxed ones, but you thanked Arceus they weren't that gigantic nor have any brutal G-Max moves.
When it comes to food, Arven learns you can make a mean curry dish, often trading each other recipes.
In fact, you've made so many types that your team is just happy to eat whatever you've cooked up.
Speaking of which..your current team is the same one from Galar. You decided they were ready for a new adventure in a new region by your side.
Inteleon, once a timid Sobble, tended to sneak bites of curry/sandwiches from the others, but otherwise acts like a cool older brother to your team.
His Snipe Shot is deadly and he lowkey missed being able to Gigantamax, although he likes how flashy he becomes when terastalized.
Zamazenta actually enjoys belly rubs, discovering this only after witnessing Arven give Mabosstiff pets on the stomach.
Gardevoir and Salazzle have been rivals since they were a Ralts and Salandit, having a few sparring matches during camps/picnics.
But trust they will BOTH go on the offense if anyone dared hurt the other. Arven witnessed this firsthand down in Area Zero when an Iron Hands attacked Salazzle with a ground move, and Gardevoir's Moonblast absolutely destroyed it.
Finally, Sylveon and Glaceon were two inseparable Eevees. You couldn't catch one without taking the other with you, and ever since then they've stuck together like glue, even evolving at the same time.
When Hop and Marni visited you in Paldea (whether to just travel or study abroad), Arven gets a little jealous that they were your friends before he was..but learns to get along with them.
Penny
Assuming she was studying abroad in Galar (after ditching Team Star) when the events of SWSH took place, she definitely would have seen your face around social media and on nearly ever TV station.
She knew you defeated Leon in the championship.
But she NEVER would've guessed it was you who also stopped the second Darkest Day from happening--and quelled Eternatus, of all things.
It was like you were the protagonist of some epic anime, doing all this heroic stuff yet being so casual when talking about it to her, Arven, and Nemona.
But she wants to hear all about your adventures!
Even though she was a little jealous you did all these cool things while she had to continue her studies.
She's thrilled to meet your Sylveon and Glaceon, finding their strong bond to be sweet and similar to her own Eeveelutions.
If you went to Crown Tundra, she immediately asks if you met her father and apologizes on his behalf if he was too overbearing.
But you amuse her with the story of how Calyrex kept temporarily possessing his body to speak to you.
The first time you brought out Zamazenta, Penny was a little intimidated by the way it looked at her menacingly...
Until it does the same thing Miraidon/Koraidon did to her during Operation Starfall:
And that is tackle her in kisses and icky wolf slobber.
She wonders why all your Legendaries do this to her..
Underneath the gruff, tough, and battle-hardened appearance, it turns out that it's really just a giant puppy longing to be spoiled like a Growlithe.
Nemona
Right from the get-go, she knew you were Galar's most recent champion and wanted to see how you fight.
Of course, that meant you had to adapt from the Dynamaxed battles you were so accustomed to and get used to Terastalized battles instead.
But you're a quick learner.
In fact your Inteleon, despite being at a disadvantage against her Pawmot, still managed to sweep half her team.
Sometimes you'll have your Paldea starter in your party in place of Zamazenta, but when you brought the shield wolf out for the first time during a picnic...Nemona was in awe.
"So THIS is one of the legendary heroes that Ms. Raifort taught us about????" She gawks, especially as you bring out the rusted shield and let it transform.
Penny made a good point: you may as well be a modern-day hero of Galar yourself!
She also wanted to hear all about your trials and tribulations with the gym challenge, having seen your battle on television and how Leon congratulated you for winning the championship.
Ngl it made her tear up the first time she rewatches it with you, proud of how you were still eager to finish it even though the Second Darkest Day interrupted the match and almost destroyed the whole region.
It lowkey made her feel bad when you, her, and the others had to go down to Area Zero and prevent another disaster that would've also unleashed dangerous Pokémon all across the region...
Yeah, you definitely needed a break and a chance to feel like a normal trainer.
And what better way to do that than to battle Nemona again and again?
Kieran
When you first met in Kitakami, you never struck him as the type to be Galar's Champion (as well as its savior from the second Darkest Day--the first one being an event he read about in books).
It's not something you liked to brag about anyways. So you downplayed your experiences while talking to him during the signboard project.
All he knew was that you lived in Galar and participated in the gym challenge. That's it.
Only when you show up to BB Academy does he overhear people talking about you like you're some celebrity, and he realizes you've been keeping even more secrets from him...
"Did you hear?? The Galar Champion is joining the league club!"
"I heard they reawakened Zacian and Zamazenta! They brought the heroes of Galar back to life!"
He refuses to believe it up until the moment you two battle, where Gardevoir and Salazzle worked incredibly well together, before you sent out Zamazenta near the very end.
Ofc Kieran is FURIOUS, screaming about how you lied to him yet again and "never changed".
"You told me you were just a normal kid from Galar...WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FROM ME?!!"
It's so unfair. You're hailed as a hero in a different region, you held two (and eventually three) champion titles, AND you have Zamazenta on your side...while he's a nobody from Kitakami who gave up so much and worked so hard--only to realize he'll never be even half as great as you.
How could he ever be like you with so many achievements under your belt?
But after you two become friends again (with you apologizing for not fully telling him the truth about yourself), Hop called you in hopes of visiting the academy's Terarium to research the Pokémon there.
You introduce him to Kieran, and they have a long chat about their rivalry with you.
Things get a little awkward when Hop rambles about his constant losses against you and his desires to become stronger (plus his struggle to step out of Leon's shadow), only to find his true calling as a professor in the end.....before asking Kieran how he coped.
"...oh um...I-I didn't really cope that well. I got jealous and bitter and..let's just say I wasn't very nice to [y/n]." He mutters, feeling ashamed.
"Awh really? But you seem like a nice chap now!" Your Galarian rival/friend tries cheering him up, although he understood his pain and felt that same humiliation several times before.
But Kieran did learn a thing or two from him, just like he did from Nemona. Battling was still his calling, but he forgot how to have fun with it, and he needed that reminder.
He mentions trading you an Applin, and Hop does a spit-take, asking if he knew what that meant (or if you told him).
If so, then he congratulates you both on your new relationship.
If not, then you let Kieran google it on your rotomphone...
Before he buries his face into Zamazenta's fur a few seconds later, trying to hide his worsening blush while you and Hop just laugh.

A miscellaneous Ecological Similar Pokémon idea for Cacnea and Cacturne, based on corals
Coracnea (Water) “With a body able to retain water without issue, much like Cacnea, Coracnea is able to stand out of water without difficulties. While it usually remains underwater, when it comes out of it, it uses its vivid colors to get the attention of other Pokémon to predate on them, using its hard coral branches”
Coracturne (Water/Ghost) “Upon evolving, Coracturne body becomes more demanding regarding nutrients, to the point of ending up bleached and forcing it to predate in land more often. During the day it remains motionless on the floor, just as if it was a beached piece of dead coral, but during the night it will impale mercilessly whatever other living being that it finds to suck it dry”

does wonder trading 100+ of the same pokemon also have ecological ramifications
hot take: it's like. okay to wonder trade weak pokémon native in your own region. since they're going to Actual Trainers that Sign Up to take care of a new pokémon, it's ok if you send off a handful of patrat or whatever. give someone a magikarp for dinner. but like don't fucking send a Haxorous to someone's doorstep

Dear Charlie,
How do you feel about rewilding regions with species of Pokémon that haven't been present for thousands of years?
For reference, I don't mean fossil 'mons, but rather something closer to how the feral Rapidash populations in western Unova and Orre, descended from Paldean stock, have helped restore the grassland ecosystems after they went locally extinct during the last Ice Age.
//OOC: Didn't know if this ask hewed too close to the "no fakemon/fake region" rule. I was inspired by the "origin of Alolan Pokémon" ask from a while ago, as well as the historical reintroduction of horses to North America.
i don't really see much of a point to it unless there's an ecological need. environments change over time, and localized extinction is a normal aspect of natural ecosystem shifts. the environment might no longer be suitable for a pokemon that once lived there.
there are no rapidash in western unova. they're only found in a small area in the northeast, just outside of lacunosa, where their ecological impact is fairly negligent.
the presence of rapidash in orre is too recent to say much about the impact they're having. the region had no wild pokemon about 20 years ago, and there is only a small number of feral kantonian ponyta/rapidash in the region right now. my friend who works in ecological restoration in orre actually owns one of these rapidash after capturing it from the wild.
however, rapidash were never native to orre. although it was initially believed that old fossils were rapidash fossils, the current understanding is that it was actually an ancestor of the much hardier mudbray that once populated the area. rapidash aren't actually beneficial to orre's environment for a variety of reasons. they overgraze the delicate grasslands, which makes it difficult for actual native species to thrive and causes damage to the recovering ecosystem. their flames are also a fire hazard, which can be devastating in orre's dry desert environment. i think the current plan is to manage the population to prevent population increase until these feral herds die out, allowing for the mudbray to once again fill in. the mudbray are being brought back because they fulfill an important environment need, as they will dig out water pools that other pokemon can then use, without overgrazing or burning down the grasslands. they were still present in orre up until the extinction event that drove out its entire wild pokemon population, so their place in the orrean ecosystem has always existed.

ngl this is entirely prompted by a reddit post about how most fanfics featuring kukui in a paternal role tend to focus on ash, but would it be possible to hear about what Lillie's relationship with Kukui and Burnet is like?
Because Lusamine is, well, Lusamine, and Mohn is missing with amnesia, Kukui and Burnet are like found family to Lillie. After returning from Kanto, Lillie returned to living in the loft in Kukui's lab, and through helping Kukui out around the lab in her teen years, she learned a lot about Pokémon biology and ecology (and especially moves with what Kukui put himself through). Seeing how much genuine care people like Selene and Kukui had for Pokémon, as well as her time in Kanto trying Pokémon training for herself, inspired her to pursue her life path on research.
In terms of personal stuff, Lillie is always invited to Kukui's table, and she's very social around Kukui and Burnet because both of them are great at keeping up conversation with her. While Kukui never asked for anything in return, Lillie kept on helping him around the house and the lab anyway.
Also, Burnet was the one to fuss the most about Lillie's first date with Selene, actually!
