Sea Swirl: First infected with Poison Joke a day earlier and her joke was being turned into a mermaid - her hindlegs turning into a shiny mermaid tail and gills forming on her neck - which, while something Sea Swirl would be fine with if she was in the water, she was walking home through the Everfree Forest so she was flopping around gasping until Zecora and Bonnie found her. Zecora has her in her cottage chilling in a big cauldron full of water to keep her hydrated. Everyone thinks she’s being made into soup by the evil Everfree witch. She’s honestly vibin’ almost completely fine.

Sunny Rays: Her joke was that her voice was turned so low she sounds like a squeaky little mouse so she’s unable to comprehend and therefore ignored when trying to help or give instructions. For someone struggling to be heard already this is a big joke on her.

Minuette: Every so often as her joke, a magic floating DVD menu pops up and rewinds/fast-forwards/pauses her in her tracks. So when she tries to rescue Dinky from “evil” Bonnie she charges at Bonnie but gets rewound so she runs backwards into a wall.

Roseluck: They think she’s escaped the curse because she looks fine and nothing is wrong except as soon as she steps on any grass or dirt (anything that isn’t a cobblestone path or indoor floor) she will overgrow the flora and it’ll wrap around her and cocoon her or trip her or poke and prod at her, so she has to ride on Sunny’s back or they’ll have to spend hours rescuing her and never find Dinky and Sea Swirl.

Ginger Gold: Ever seen the Magic Asparagus episode of Bluey? That. Every so often when anyone says the name of any animal, Ginger will act as that animal against her will.

Ditzy Doo: Makes her eyes re-orient and uncross except the way she flies is so specific to her condition as she learned how to live with it since she was a filly so the sudden unwarned reversal of that made her extremely clumsy at first and can’t fly right and keeps bumping into things. In reality this isn’t a joke, Poison Joke flowers just also have medicinal properties for people with sight problems up to a point, so it just temporarily treated her existing vision problems. It’s not a good solution unless it is very specifically mixed with other herbs and diagnosed in proper consistent doses so that’s also why it disoriented Ditzy.

Midwest Lost Post #1

Introduction:

This is my second time writing this post because I pressed ctrl z on accident at the end of my (very long) first attempt and apparently tumblr doesn't have a redo button. I am going to scream. Anyway, Midwest Lost is a souls-like set in the American Midwest in which you play as an angsty teenage boy with a big fuck off sword. My main inspirations for this project are the mainline souls games (also bloodborne psx), metal gear rising revengeance, and kingdom hearts 358/2 days. The best way I can describe my goal for this project is that I want it to be a fun, earnest, introspective, and emotionally raw teenage drama with a focus on atmosphere, narrative, and cool bossfights. As you can probably tell this project is the most early in development of the three I'm currently working on.

Story:

I'm not going to go into too much detail here because I want to avoid talking about spoilers, and, also, anything is subject to change at this point. The gist of it is that you are playing as an emotionally troubled teenage boy who (figuratively and literally) hides behind his big ol' sword. His ultimate goal is to leave his dead-end home town behind and make a better life for himself. The first obstacle of many in this goal is the protagonist's abusive stepfather who serves as the introductory bossfight of the game. I have a lot of ideas for bossfights that I am extremely excited about, but I'll avoid talking about them here so that I can show them off when they are more developed (one of them I'm excited about is a mom van). The game is likely going to be 50% exploration of a vibin small town and 50% fighting bosses, so most of my effort is going into those two things. The game's story is going to take place in chapters with various time gaps between them. This will allow me to set different chapters in different seasons, and, most importantly, it will let me set a chapter on Halloween night. The last thing I'll talk about in regards to the story is that, as absurd as the subject matter may get, I want to avoid the game feeling irony poisoned at any point. I want the game to feel earnest as that is how I'm feelin' while making it.

Mechanics to Appease a Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain:

I would describe my enjoyment of games as a medium as belonging on a spectrum where the left has experiences that touch me in an more complex emotional sense, and the right has experiences that are pure serotonin injected straight into my soul. The souls games sit comfortably in the middle. This is because the atmosphere, storytelling, and general vibe of the souls games is really harrowing and beautiful, and the gameplay gives me the kind of intense brainworms that lead me to play through it twice a month. Before working on my current three projects, I hadn't really worked on something that I intended to necessarily be fun. In a way, I'm sort of getting out of my comfort zone by making something so mechanically heavy. It's been a nice change of pace to learn that I can focus on atmosphere and gameplay without either of them feeling creatively unsatisfying. Something you must know about me is that I have an immeasurable fixation on dodge rolling, and I think it's one of my favorite mechanics of all time. All this to say I put a dodge roll in my game, and I think it's feelin' really good.

Animation is Hard:

(But if I'm being honest, I'm getting there.)

Souls-likes are sort of unique as a genre in that animation is extra important in them. In something like a platformer you might have a bad jump animation that makes the gamefeel all wonky, but the jump itself will still work the same. In contrast, a 3D-Action game like Dark Souls is very dependent on its animations to control timing, spacing, and telegraphing on top of the gamefeel. Before starting this project I didn't really know if I had the animation chops to pull something like this off, but heading straight into the deep end has, I think, really helped me improve my animation skills quickly. The moment I got the stepfather's "lunge + spin knife around" attack implemented (as pictured above) I got a lot more confident in my ability to probably make this game feel pretty dang fun. Recently, I had to make 8 different strafe animations and it strangely didn't feel like a chore at all. I'll talk about that more next week since it's related to the mechanic I'm currently working on.

Drinkz:

The main healing items in this game are a variety of energy drinks, coffee brands, soda, etc. that each have their own unique effect. In the above gifs you can see the two that I have currently implemented. These are the green and blue varieties of in-world brand "Vlade Energy". The green one is the most basic heal item, and it's the one you start off with. It allows you to take two sips per can with each sip healing a good deal, and you can roll out of the drink animation at anytime; however, cancelling the animation also discards any sips yet taken while still using up the can. The blue one stacks a passive buff on the player that allows them to heal by dodging through enemy attacks. I'm really happy with the presentation of the heal mechanic with the fun particles, the sfx (take my word for it I guess), and the animation of the protagonist throwing the empty can away.

Music:

The game currently has none. I'm looking to commission a bunch of artists to fill up the soundtrack with some banging Midwest Emo or songs that otherwise have an indie feel. If you make music and are interested in doing a song or two please hmu. It'll be a p long while before I'm actually worrying about getting music in the game, but I thought I'd mention it. There is also gonna be some fights that have tracks way outside of the Midwest Emo genre, so don't be afraid to hmu if you are making different types of stuff.

Conclusion:

I wish I could talk more about this project, but I'm gonna have to wait until it's further along. Next week I'll be talking about my strafing / sidestepping mechanic that I'm currently implementing, so I'll see ya then. I'd like to end this post by mentioning that the amazing portrait of the main character seen in the health UI was commissioned from lonesomnia. I cannot stress enough how much I love how that piece came out.

As for the blood born diseases thing- most ones you can't really look at a person and say Ah Yes. That blood is bad.

Unless like uh. They're actively having complications from the disease/it's like. Ebola. You can tell if someone has Ebola they do not look like they're vibin. Don't get ebola kids it's bad for you.

Most bloodborne diseases aren't actually that bad/are much more easily treated now a days. Hepatitis is the best example for that tbh. If you have hep c or b exposure they can just slap you on some meds and you'll be fine. Same with HIV! So it's not like a big big threat, it would just legit be a nightmare for some poor epidemiologist. At least if everyone had bite marks you'd know the source rather than the hell that is the Trying to find out what food gave everyone food poisoning at the picnic (Hint: mayonnaise is the epidemiologist worst nightmare! Keep egg products properly chilled or get one million salmonella)

Additional!!! Most creatures that can spread diseases like a vampire theoretically could are actually immune to the effects of the disease they carry!! It's awesome and it's why bats can be epidemiology's worst enemy. They're so good at resisting diseases and also being so full of them,,, but they're so CUTE. < wants nothing more than to gently pet a bat but cannot because God would strike me down.

(But also it WOULD be hella cool if they could just like- tell if someone is sick through vampire powers. A blood vibe check, if you will)

I do think the idea of them being a problem for blood banks is a really good motivator for y/n tho!!! Makes a lot more sense than vampire disease hours tbh. There's already usually a shortage of blood so they would be a substantial threat for that alone! Way more than for hepatitis curse!

The Master Dojo is actually a multi-story building but also an extremely wide one, not as wide as most would except but wider than they think

When not used to be a trail for the one who has the Isle’s Sacred Armour, its a regular training building

But if one requests it, they can have the special training activated for them and a few others for a session

Mustard did use to be the Stow-On-Side Gym Leader, but that was years before Bea’s time so she doesn’t even know it until she visits the Isle for training

Hyde’s a teenager, he’s just really short

He half-assedly participated in the Gym Challenge and got his ass kicked by her in the Cup

Honey is still part of her old Company, but as a distant investor and consultant

Honey terrifies everyone of the young Adult Crew (Piers, Leon, Sonia, Raihan, Nessa, Milo, and Gordie) as much as they adore her

Malcom was the one who always looked out for both of them, him and Peony, when they were kids so Peony could have a childhood

This, in turn, made Malcom a lot more serious and ‘mature’ at a younger age while Peony is a bit too naive as an adult

The Mayor of the settlement is Klara and Avery’s grandfather, who raised them alongside the settlement after he took them in after their parents died

Avery and Klara practically inhaled and ate up every piece of information they could find on the King, because he could make their home better, right? He could make it so their friends don’t have to leave with their parents to the big city, right?

Calyrex watched Klara and Avery grow up, the two kids being it only source of power for years, but then they left, not long after giving up on believing it’s ‘fairy tale’

That doesn’t stop the two siblings from trying to restore the faith in the lost King, especially after hear two kids younger than they speak vividly and furiously about myths and legends and gods

favourite fairytale?

Don’t really have one but I DO have these books!

This one‘s a collection of Grimm fairytales from the 60‘s, and the stories are decorated with these really stylized illustrations - most of them monochrome, but some are full page in color

They’ve got older versions of your classic Disney-fied stories too, so eg with Snow White the poisoned apple is actually the 3rd assassination attempt and the prince isn’t kissing a random dead girl but rather going "yo she kinda hot can I have her tomb be at my place“, and then the apple gets yeeted (yote?) from her throat when one of the guys carrying her coffin faceplants on the dirt. (still not sure this ending‘s less or more creepy lol)

Or with Sleeping Beauty, the whole castle gets out to sleep! Including the animals, insects, and even fire. And there’s 12 wise women instead of 3 fairies, with the evil one being number 13. There‘s a story in here called "fairytale of someone who wandered off to learn how to get scared“. That’s both the name and the plot. I like it because it reads nothing like your typical fairy tale, more like a…deconstruction? Parody? So thinking about how this story came to be is interesting.

Like. He wasn’t sure if there was a ghost in the hallway so he tackled him down some stairs and went back to bed. He‘s vibin with the talking monster cats. He accidentally save a castle from the ancient ghost and the king gives him his daughter and the entire kingdom, but he couldn’t care less because he still didn’t learn what being scared is like. He’s being so annoying about this that the princess/Queen? was fed up with it and her handmaid told her to dump a bucket of fish on him in the middle of the night. It worked. I love it. That’s the moral of the story. Fish bucket

I’ve also got this book of fairy tales from Asia and Africa:

And when they wrote that they did in fact mean the entirety of the continents; the name in brackets is the country of origin and it features all sorts of different places! So that’s pretty cool.

Fascinatingly enough, the third last one of that list kinda reads like Red Riding Hood? It’s about a girl visiting her grandma to bring her milk, but on the way a lion stops her to ask where she’s going, runs ahead and eats part of the grandma- instead of directly impersonating grannie though lion tells her to blame it on ants. Girl asks what’s up, grannie says ants, girl goes home, visits next day, less grandma is left. Repeat.

That goes on until it’s only her head and girl finally gets scared and runs away, but lion was already waiting. She gives him her cow so he won’t eat her, he chills for a bit, she runs away, lion notices she’s gone and catches up again, she offers smth new. Also repeat until she offers herself (but not before offering her lil bro first-), but this time she makes it home to her siblings, but the lion demands them to give her since she did make a deal, and they go "sure but you’re probs hungry from all that’s running, here’s some food“ they then proceed to throw hot rocks into his mouth until he dies.

Like, certain extra details aside- that’s pretty similar? Girl visits grandma to bring food, gets stopped by predator who asks her where she’s going and runs ahead, eats grandma and makes it so girl doesn’t realize what’s going on, only visible thing of grandma is her head, girl notices smth is sus right at the very end when its pretty much too late, gets saved, predator gets killed by getting his stomach filled with rocks.

The biggest difference is grandma getting multiple rounds, girl actually escaping with all limbs attached, and her siblings doing the saving instead of some random hunter. Makes me wonder if Red Riding Hood is some highly remixed version of this one, what with trade routes and oral transmissions and stuff, or if this one was rewritten to align more with RRH. Hmm

For the memory ask game. I only have two really distinct memories. Neither are really interesting tho

1- for my x-virus kintype. I was in my room testing viruses on samples of blood taken from some of the other proxies. Probably brian's blood because he was my roommate and we were pretty good friends. One of the viruses was influenza and another was food poisoning. But that’s only a guess because those two have fairly short incubation periods.

2- for my percy jackson ockin. I was chilling out with a harpy. Probably because my mother was iris, the harpies are iris's sisters, meaning the harpy was my family. So yeah. Vibin with aunt harpy ✌️😎
